Female Patients Very Happy With Cosmetic Outcome of Breast Reduction

Breast reduction surgery is a very popular procedure among women because of its combined physical and psychological benefits, but are patients happy with the cosmetic results? according to a new research study published in the August issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the answer appears to be a resounding yes.

The study, which surveyed 125 breast reduction surgery recipients, gathered information six months after surgery and again one year after surgery.  at the six month marker, a whopping 90 percent of patients rated the cosmetic outcome of their surgery as either “good” or “very good.” a full year after surgery, an enduring 80 percent of patients were still very happy (rating “good” or “very good”) with the cosmetic results of their procedure.

The same study also surveyed the opinions of the cosmetic surgeons and surprising or not, the surgeons were slightly more critical of the final outcome than their patients. at the one year mark about 75 percent of public surgeons rated the final results as either “good” or “very good.” Private surgeons on the other hand were even more critical, with only 60 percent rating the results positively.

According the study, the difference in opinion was related to the evaluation of specific breast features. in general, patients were the most concerned about symmetry between the breasts, while surgeons were overall more concerned about undesirable scarring.

All in all, the take home message of this study appears to be that most women are satisfied with the results of breast reduction surgery, though ratings may decline somewhat over time. however, additional research is probably necessary to help surgeons communicate more effectively the long-term post-surgical expectations of breast reduction surgery.

Stevie Wonder has filed for divorce.

Although the 62-year-old singer has been living apart from his fashion designer wife Kai Millard Morris, since October 2009, he has opted to officially end the marriage, according to gossip website TMZ.

Stevie – who cited irreconcilable differences in the paperwork – is seeking joint custody of the couple’s two sons Kailand, 10 and Mandla Kadjay, seven.

He has agreed to pay both spousal and child support.

Stevie – whose real name is Stevland Morris – divorced singer Syreeta Wright in 1972 and has seven kids overall from his two marriages and other relationships.

Although Stevie amassed his huge fortune before he tied the knot with Kai 11 years ago, some assets will be split between them although a final decision has yet to be made.

Recently Stevie’s cousin was ordered to stand trial on an extortion charge after a judge heard testimony that the man and his girlfriend attempted to sell a film ranting against the singer’s treatment of his family for millions of dollars.

Superior Court Judge Ray Jurado ruled that prosecutors had presented enough evidence for a jury to decide whether Alpha L. Walker and his girlfriend Tamara E. Diaz extorted him by threatening to sell it to various media outlets if they weren’t paid by the Grammy-winning musician.

They have pleaded not guilty.

In an interview with The Times, Sir Bruce said he wanted to clean up the “grubby areas” of cosmetic surgery. “I think that there are some very good parts of the cosmetic intervention and surgery industry but there are also some pretty grubby areas.

“There are some pretty hard sales techniques out there at the moment. For example, there are some surgical interventions being offered where if you decide to have it quickly you get a discount. I think that’s scandalous.”

Sir Bruce said the breast implant scare had been a “catalyst” for a review of the industry. An inquiry concluded they did not cause a long-term health threat.

The panel — including Catherine Kydd, a PIP campaigner, Andrew Vallance-Owen, a former medical director of Bupa and Trish Halpin, the editor of Marie Claire magazine — will make recommendations to the Government in March.

Sir Bruce said: “Many questions have been raised, particularly around the regulation of clinics, whether all practitioners are adequately qualified, how well people are advised when money is changing hands, aggressive marketing techniques, and what protection is available when things go wrong.” the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons has welcomed the review, saying it would also advocate a compulsory national register for breast implants and a strict code of advertising to protect vulnerable patients who “seek cosmetic surgery for psychological reasons”.

Carol Robson, 63, from Rotherham, South Yorks, who suffered ruptured implants, said: “I don’t think people know enough about cosmetic surgery and need to be aware of the risks involved.”

LONDON (AP) – seven of Cameroon's Olympic competitors have disappeared from their official residence and may be attempting to seek asylum in Britain, the chief of the African nation's delegation was quoted as saying Tuesday.

The British news agency Press Association said David Ojong, the Team Cameroon chief, told his government that five boxers, a swimmer and a soccer player left the athletes village in Stratford, east London, over the weekend and have not returned. the state-run Cameroon Tribune newspaper published a similar report, also quoting Ojong.

A sports reporter in Cameroon said some athletes had hinted before departing for London that they might attempt to stay there.

“They said they were very demotivated and named insufficient government attention to their complaints, inadequate financing, poor preparation and substandard infrastructure,” David Sandjo, a sports reporter for Sweet FM radio, told the associated Press. “Some even said they would not hesitate to change their nationality if ever they had the chance.”

Ojong was quoted identifying the missing athletes, but the names differed from those given to the London organizing committee.

As displayed on the London Games official site, the seven are 50-meter freestyle swimmer Paul Edingue Ekane, 21; women's goalie Drusille Ngako Tchimi, 25; and five boxers: light flyweight Thomas Essomba, 24; light heavyweight Christian Donfack Adjoufack, 28; lightweight Yhyacinthe Mewoli Abdon, 26; super heavyweight Blaise Yepmou Mendouo, 27; and light welterweight Serge Ambomo, 26.

The associated Press telephoned and emailed Cameroon's Olympic delegation, but no messages were answered.

Press Association, citing Cameroon media, said the seven all hold visas permitting them to remain legally in Britain until at least November.

A private newspaper in Cameroon, Le Messager, reported that the athletes were supposed to fly back to Cameroon on Sunday but had vanished. it said they took their personal effects, a nearly $5,000 performance bonus and new sports equipment with them, citing an unnamed national Olympic official.

The newspaper said Cameroon's Olympic delegation told Prime Minister Philemon Yang about the disappearances and asked boxing coach Justin Tchouem to explain why he allowed his players to keep their passports.

Britain's Home Office, responsible for immigration, said it could not comment on whether any of the seven had applied for asylum.

Scotland Yard said it was investigating the reports but could not yet verify that the Cameroonian athletes had gone missing.

Cameroon, a predominantly French-speaking nation of 20 million in west central Africa, is among the poorest nations on earth, with an estimated 2011 economic output of just $1,230 per person, according to the International Monetary Fund.

Britain's Office for National Statistics says fewer than 20,000 Cameroonians live in the UK, with most asylum-seekers opting instead for France. the UK Border Agency says the majority of asylum applicants from Cameroon are refused and deported.

It's not the first case of missing athletes in London. Before the July 27 opening ceremony, Sudan's embassy confirmed that three athletes had gone missing; one had applied for asylum and the other two were expected to do so.

BUDD LAKE — little Joey Johnson, his arms and legs thin for a toddler, lies on a couch in his Budd Lake living room, aware he is sick and hurting, unaware he has become the inspiration for hundreds, perhaps thousands, of people, people who have never seen him. His half-lidded eyes track visitors and he offers a weak, “Hello.”

One of Joey’s frequent visitors is Marcie Furlong, an executive with AON, who doesn’t have the time to do much else beyond working and caring for her family, including four young children, ages two to 10. Yet she has somehow found the time for Joey and his family.

“I’ve never done anything like this before, never had this kind of experience,” says Furlong, 38, who lives in Denville.

She heard about Joey from a neighbor, contacted his parents Joe and Michele Johnson, and became a leading voice for the beleaguered family trying to cope, not just with the demands of Joey’s overwhelming illness, but also with more practical issues, like how to pay for expenses not covered by insurance, including frequent stays in New York City while Joey receives chemotherapy at New York University’s Langone Medical Center.

“I’ve never met a family with so much hope and so much faith,” says Furlong, who runs the Joey Johnson Fund. “It makes you want to do something for them, for Joey.”

The little boy was diagnosed with brain cancer shortly after Thanksgiving last year. His story first appeared here four months ago and, in a matter of days, the fund’s post office box was jammed with nearly a thousand letters, many of them containing cash and checks. The contributions are still coming in, nearly $20,000 so far, Furlong says.

“We received one contribution of $500 — and another of one dollar that came with a letter of apology,” she says. “People are so kind.”

What happened to the Johnsons spurred dozens of fund-raisers, including concerts and a motorcycle rally that raised more than $10,000. The Johnsons can’t keep track of all the events — and they confess to feeling awkward to be receiving so much.

“We’re more fortunate than most,’” says Michele. Joe, 32, a former Marine combat veteran in Iraq, is a Stanhope policeman with good health benefits and compassionate colleagues who donated their time off so he could stay home for six months with Joey. Still, their expenses mount — and could get much higher — as they seek effective treatments for their son.

Joe has gone back to work. Michele, 31, who suffers from multiple sclerosis, says she “forgot” about her own treatments while she took care of Joey and now has difficulty walking. Her mother, Martha Zelasny of Succasunna, gave up her own job to be with the family.

The little boy is on his third treatment protocol at NYU. The first two failed to eliminate the cancer but the last scans show his condition remains “stable.” The family is worried that problems removing fluids from his brain might require surgery — and that would mean taking Joey off treatment, perhaps for as long as a month.

“We don’t know what will happen if he misses treatments for that long,” says Joe. “We’re afraid the cancer might begin to grow again.”

Joey faces tests Monday to determine whether the surgery is necessary. Michele says what she wants more than money are the prayers of those who believe they are effective. a devout Catholic, she prays repeatedly for her son. she keeps a plastic bag filled slips of paper on which are written prayers sent in by strangers. The letters she cherishes the most are those from other parents who believe their children were saved by prayer.

“We’re doing everything we can, the doctors are doing everything they can, so now it’s up to God, really,” says Michele. “We really believe Joey will be our miracle.”

The Johnson’s faith drew a lot of the response to their son’s story. Many readers sent Mass cards and promises to pray for the little boy.

“There’s just something about this family, and that little boy,” says Furlong. their story changed her life, she says. In 1999, a close relative was killed in a car accident. she remembers losing her faith and tearing a religious medal from her neck, throwing it away. a so-called Miraculous Medal, familiar to all Catholics. “I was done with God,” she says.
