When crowdfunding platform MyFreeImplants announced its ‘Breast Day Ever’ contest, more than a few eyebrows were raised. Some took issue with the way the site operates, while others questioned crowdfunding such a personal operation.
Despite the criticism, MyFreeImplants is a successful platform that has raised millions of dollars for women to get breast implants. the Breast Day Ever will mark the 1000th successful fundraising, and whoever guesses the day and time of the occasion will win $500 to put back into the site (other close guesses will win smaller prizes). it will also mark the first day that the site will offer surgeries beside breast augmentation.
MyFreeImplants started back in 2005, before Kickstarter and the JOBS Act made crowdfunding the popular fundraising method it is today. Co-founders Jason Grunstra and Jay Moore were on a trip to Las Vegas when they started chatting with a cocktail waitress, who expressed her desire for breast implants. the guys at the table all committed sums of money toward her operation – five dollars here, ten there; by the end of the night, they raised $750.
“If you put a lot of people together, you can do some pretty powerful things,” Grunstra told Crowdsourcing.org. “That’s how the idea of crowdfunding first came to my mind.”
The site boasts it has raised over $8 million to date. the women raising the money are never actually in charge of it – the site pays the surgeons directly, reducing the potential for fraud.
The site earns revenue in a number of ways. like many crowdfunding sites, MyFreeImplants takes a fee – ten percent – on all money raised through the platform. Surgeons can advertise their services on the site. the platform also sells one-dollar message credits that benefactors can use to talk to the women. it offers several subscription levels, depending on how involved a benefactor wants to be in a woman’s fundraising quest. Finally, while the women are waiting to reach their goals, the money donated up to that point is held in a “low risk account,” according to Grunstra. in 2009, the account held around $2 million, and the founders said they expected to make a six-figure salary.
In many ways, MyFreeImplants resembles a social networking site. Users create profiles, send messages to each other, and can set up video streams. the site forbids exchanging real contact information, so there is little chance of the “benefactors” and “models” meeting in real life. Grunstra believes that the site’s online dating-style atmosphere helps drive donations.
“there is somewhat of a sexual chemistry, because it is breast-related and there is some sexiness to that,” he said. “Once you start talking to someone, every time a girl sends and receives a message, she gets a dollar toward her goal. As you get to know someone more and more through messages, you can make donations of any amount you want.”
As the members become more comfortable with one another, however, the potential for unintended and inappropriate contact increases. MyFreeImplants has taken its share of criticism over the years for encouraging what some would consider unsavory activity – women are required to post after surgery photos, for example. Some suggest this encourages nudity, though the site’s rules state plainly, “there is to be no pornography of any kind in your personal gallery.”
The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons condemned the site in a press release, calling its method “wholly inappropriate” and “just plain degrading.” a 2007 article in Elle magazine slammed the site, too. Grunstra is well aware of the criticism, and he has a simple response.
“I’m in the mindset of, ‘to each his own,’” he said. “If someone wants to make a decision on their own to alter their body in any way, it’s their body, they’re free to do that. Everyone should be free to make their own decisions. It’s not hurting anyone else, or taking advantage of anyone else.”
Grunstra believes the site is fixing an existing problem regarding the funding of plastic surgery. Traditionally, he says, women who get breast augmentation surgery take out loans with a high interest rate from the surgeon’s partner credit application company. it can take years to pay back the loans. Soon, the site will offer surgeries beside breast augmentation, which, when offered in bundles, can also bring down the operation costs.
For some women, the chance to avoid loans and pay for the surgery with donations may be too good to pass up, though Grunstra explains that the women on the site are not impulse buyers attracted by the promise of free plastic surgery. the average fundraising campaign on the site takes months, not weeks or days, so the models have some time to think about their decision. They can back out at any point.
While the ethical uncertainties surrounding the site are likely to persist, Grunstra and Moore have shown that operating a risqué, donation-based crowdfunding platform can be a good way to make a living – as long as you’ve got the thick skin to take the criticism.
Jordin Sparks became the youngest winner in American Idol history when she was only 17 years old and her subsequent career has been lackluster at best, overwrought with sugary pop tunes and star collaborations.
Sparks is now 22-years old and is about to make her big screen debut in Sparkle, alongside the late Whitney Houston. the film is inspired by the Supremes and opens on August 17th. the hype surrounding the film has been magnified due to the recent death of Whitney Houston as this was the last project Houston was attached to before her death. Houston appears as Sparks’ mother, induced with the clichéd former singer’s pathos. she attempts to protect her children from the “dangers” of show business. this has not been labeled as a roman-a-clef, but the parallels drawn are ominous and spooky.
Sparks spoke to Daily News about the film and said, “When I got to the movie set, I had to train myself not to look into the lens! the whole movie was a huge learning experience for me. I was like a sponge, just soaking everything up.”
Many critics have touted Sparkle as the Glitter for a new generation, infused with a posthumous hype. Glitter was the Mariah Carey failure which led to the demise of Mariah’s one shot film career. according to film pundits, Sparkle will draw Whitney Houston fans from all over the world and even if the film’s plot suffers from syrupy sentimentality and outdated method acting, it might still be a massive box office success.
Sparks opened up about the grief she experienced when she heard about the death of her idol, “I was just crying, I was so devastated. I was somebody who had listened to Whitney’s music and tried to emulate her, so to get to work with her in this intimate setting, to do scenes where we were yelling at each other, and then holding hands with her… I just love her.” Sparks also secluded herself from work for many months, in order to deal with the grief.
Will Sparks be able to hold her own in her first acting job? will she follow in the footsteps of Jennifer Hudson? What will it be like to see the iconic Whitney Houston in her film screen finale? We’re preparing for a tear jerking experience and an emotional homage to the greatest singer of all time.
Memento Mori will be salient in our experience of this film.
Every time there’s a major technological shift in operational models you can here the hue and cry from across the land of IT: the sky is falling. our jobs are in jeopardy. Technology “X” will eliminate the need for “Y”.
like the children’s fable of Chicken Little, the sky never falls, the need for “Y” is never eliminated, and life continues on. if anything, the exact opposite tends to occur: a new set of skills requires new roles, new people, new services. the complexity introduced as new technology is integrated with the old becomes unmanageable without additional training, people and budgets.
Consider the predicted elimination of IT with the introduction of cloud. Didn’t happen. as expected, the complexity of integration and management via means foreign to operations resulted in a dearth of employees with the “right” set of skills.
Cloud computing professionals that are most in demand are those with technical skills, such as software engineers, systems engineers and network administrators.
With the enhanced demand for Cloud professionals and interest in this field of technology, cloud-computing certifications are becoming increasingly popular and easily available. HP has introduced the Cloud Architect certificate, which will enable you to demonstrate to an employer that you can not only manage but also design and implement cloud infrastructures. the other certificate generating interest at the moment is Cloud Integrator, which is indicative of an IT professional’s ability to integrate new elements into established cloud systems.
Virtualization, too, is in large part responsible for the interest and growth in devops as organizations began to adopt a more rapid application deployment lifecycle. the complexity of virtualized server infrastructure – mostly due to the introduction of virtual switches and networks – only served to reinforce the need for IT, not eliminate it.
Today’s major technological shift in the data center focuses on SDN (Software-Defined Networks). Again, there are many who hear the marketing presentation of SDN and its impact to the data center (and on operations) and fear for the future of IT – or specifically in this case, networking experts.
Once again, there is nothing to fear. the sky is not falling, networks are not going away, and the complexity that will be introduced by yet another layer of networking a top traditional networks will require new skills and new roles and solidify the need for IT, not eliminate it.
Networking blogger Ethan Banks replies to this concern:
My short answer to the concerns raised here is that networking folks haven’t got a thing to worry about. Sharp network folks at all levels of ability and experience will always be employable, even in the coming SDN netpocalypse. More than that, I don’t think SDN will enable IT organizations to shed network staff members. as my friend Tony Mattke is fond of saying, “Complexity goes against robustness.” and software defined networks will inevitably be complex. SDN does nothing to make networks simpler – not down underneath, not down where it counts. they are every bit as complex as legacy traditional network are today; I could argue that they are more so. with complexity comes things not working right. and when things don’t work right, it will take someone who knows where their towel is to make it better.
Like virtualization and cloud, SDN will not wholesale replace the data center. that means integration, that means inter-networking, that means traditional networks and next-generation networks living together, cats and dogs, mass hysteria. Well, maybe not mass hysteria but certainly some mass confusion as the two technologies attempt to find a way to cohabitate for at least the foreseeable future.
Major technological shifts like virtualization, cloud and now SDN are not necessarily replacing existing technology. they are enhancing it by making it more scalable – both from an operational and a managerial perspective.
That’s because while cloud and virtualization were maturing, data center capacity was expanding. that means the operational efficiencies gained enabled the data center to grow without requiring a complementary growth in people required to manage it.
That’s what will come about with SDN: it will enable “network people” to effectively handle the growth and change in data center networks without requiring a complementary growth in staff.
SDN is not going to kill traditional networks or eliminate the need for the folks who manage them. like cloud and virtualization and many other technological shifts in the past, it will improve the ability of the data center and its operational staff to scale.
DANVILLE — It might sound strange, but … Provena United Samaritans Medical Center wants to keep you out of the hospital. “we need to focus on wellness, and the well-being of the community at large,” said Mike Brown, regional president and CEO of the Provena hospitals in Danville and Urbana. to that end, the medical center is working toward opening a Clinical Decision Unit, where an emergency room patient could get more tests without being admitted. another change is that a nurse practitioner will be added to the chronic disease unit to help patients manage their disorder without recurring admissions. Besides helping people stay well, Provena has been focusing on staffing and technological changes in recent months. in addition, it has undergone a merger, and also has acquired the outpatient surgery center known as Danville HealthCare. Wellness Plans are under way to open a Clinical Decision Unit next to the emergency room. the room will be used for a patient who might need more lab work, for example; the patient can wait for the results of the tests instead of being admitted. This interim area will eliminate needless admissions, Brown said. the unit will be used for patients who may benefit from an extended observation period, or who may require additional monitoring, diagnostic evaluation and/or treatment. the Clinical Decision Unit will occupy the area now used by the physical therapy department, which will move upstairs off the lobby. It makes sense, Brown said, to have the therapy unit more easily accessible to patients on the ground floor. another focus on wellness involves the chronic disease unit. the addition of a nurse practitioner will help patients manage their illness, so they can reach the highest level of wellness, Brown said. “we can’t cure you, but we can make you as good as you can be,” he said. that will be accomplished through special classes and personal attention. Staffing A big change, which took effect in July, is the addition of 24-hour hospitalists — a rapidly growing form of medical practice. A hospitalist is a physician who has chosen not to have a private practice and is trained in hospital-based medicine. A person who comes to the emergency room, for example, and who doesn’t have a primary-care doctor will be seen by an emergency room physician. If the person is admitted and is not assigned a primary care doctor, he or she will be cared for by a hospitalist while he’s a patient at the medical center. Hospitalists work 24 hours a day, and are available to oversee a patient’s treatment and meet with the family. Provena has a team of 10-12 doctors who serve as hospitalists, with the care being available around the clock. right now at Provena, hospitalists will treat the medically unassigned and most patients who have Carle physicians. another staffing change is that a neonatal nurse practitioner will come on board later this fall, and mid-level practitioners will be added to the pediatrics department. Provena continues to partner with the local clinics to bring specialists to town. Technology United Samaritans will be the first hospital in the Provena system to launch the Computerized Physician Order Entry in October. Physicians enter patient treatment orders directly into a computer, so nurses don’t have to do that, and can even do it from home. the patient management software also eliminates errors due to handwriting or transcription. “This is a big deal for doctors. This is a big deal for patients,” Brown said. Provena also has been using a system that scans medicine bar codes, patients’ wristbands and the nurse’s code to make sure the proper medication is being given, and that there won’t be any drug interactions. “the work this ministry has done staying technologically ahead of the curve has paid off,” Brown said. Patient safety is of the utmost importance, he said, and the medical center is taking every safeguard. Merger Provena is awaiting a decision on whether it will get a new name as a result of the merger with Resurrection Health Care last November. in February, officials announced that Presence Health had been chosen as the name of the new health-care system formed by the merger of Provena Health of Mokena and Resurrection Health Care of Chicago. A formal rollout of a new logo and related branding is expected to occur this fall, Brown said. in the meantime, Provena United Samaritans Medical Center in Danville and Provena Covenant Medical Center in Urbana will continue to use their current names and logos. the United Samaritans Medical Center name is expected to stay, Brown said, but it’s unknown what other name changes will be made, if any. the merger is going exceedingly well, he said, and has helped save money through a lower cost per-unit for supplies, for example. the hospitals also can share each other’s resources and knowledge. Surgi-center added the most recent change at Provena is that it received approval from the Illinois Health and Facilities Planning Board to transfer ownership of the outpatient surgery center known as Danville HealthCare to Provena. the venture will provide better access for patients and has the potential to help attract new physicians, Brown said in an earlier press release. After the closing in early August, Provena United Samaritans plans to close the facility for a short period to give the center a facelift and then reopen for procedures within a couple weeks, with a new look and a new name, ACCESS, which stands for Ambulatory Care Center for Excellence in Surgical Services. A public grand opening event is being planned for September. About 70 percent of the procedures currently performed at the surgicenter are ophthalmologic (eye surgery), as well as some podiatry and gastroenterology. Those physicians plan to continue to perform those procedures at ACCESS. Provena is inviting other physicians to use the facility for procedures including plastic surgery, ear/nose/throat, and gynecology. with all the changes going on, Brown said, “we want people to know what we’re doing, what we’re capable of.” Provena also continues to maintain a staff of about 700 people. “we have a great staff to handle the day-to-day operations,” Brown said.

Try to have some meals prepared and get your refrigerator stocked with food and drinks prior to your cosmetic surgery. You should limit your physical activity up to a month afterwards your surgery, to take the time off your job. keep reading for more great tips!
Have a conversation with your doctor about the antibiotics post-surgery. You’ll likely need to take some medication in recovery to reduce chances of infections or complications. be skeptical of a surgeon who does not require you to take antibiotics before the procedure.
Give yourself sufficient recovery time after your surgery is completed. Recovery can take as long as a month, depending on the procedure you had. If you have a job, make sure that you have requested sufficient time off. be careful, too, not to do too much, too fast.
You want to have your cosmetic surgery performed by a highly skilled and experienced surgeon. this means you need someone who is experienced in general, but also with the specific procedure that you will have done. If you are not completely confident in your choice of surgeon, don’t hesitate to keep looking.
Look to see that the doctor you are considered is certified through a reputable organization. go elsewhere if they do not have this qualification. You need to ask for proof of how many times your surgeon has performed this procedure.
You will not be able to drive yourself home after surgery. Ask a good friend or someone in your family for help driving home. If you find no one has the ability to take you home, you need to call a cab to help you.
The cost of your surgery is not set in stone and can change if circumstances change. There are a lot of factors that can contribute to this change in costs. You have to factor in things like anesthesia, facilities fees, follow-up visits, aftercare and the like. Consult with your doctor about all the costs of surgery. Don’t agree to pay anything until you understand your total financial obligation.
Learn about the record and credentials of any business that you want to have work done at. look for the surgery center to be accredited, inspected and licensed. Even local clinics should have this type of information. It is your responsibility to make sure that the clinic you are having your surgery at meets the requirements of the state you live in. You should also see if any malpractice suits have occurred against the facility, and how they were resolved.
Whenever you get anesthesia, there are risks. Anesthesia can cause you to develop an abnormal heart rhythm during the procedure. Anesthesia can make your heart beat in strange ways. this can occur when blood flow becomes impaired during anesthesia. An irregular heart beat may be the result.
Know your surgeons policy for results you are unhappy with. this will give you the assurance that you need in case things went wrong. while getting your money back is rarely possible, make sure you understand the policy of your physician when additional procedures are needed to achieve the results you wanted.
Ask about the amount of anesthesia that is used for a particular cosmetic surgery procedure. It is really easy to forget to ask this question, but you need to know the answer for a few reasons. First, it is beneficial to have the opportunity to explain how varying levels of anesthesia help with your comfort level. Additionally, the recovery period from anesthesia may be difficult. Finally, there will be a difference in price depending on the amount of anesthesia used. Know what you can expect.
Do you know what questions you should ask when you consult with your prospective surgeon? Prior to making any decision, you have to be well informed by your surgeon. Board certification is a very important qualification to look for in your doctor. You also need to see the surgeon’s portfolio so you can see the potential results of working with this surgeon. Inquire about everything including the procedure, recovery time and medications needed.
It is vital that you don’t walk into your surgeon’s office with a single procedure in mind. An excellent surgeon will be able to give you a variety of options that might meet your needs. Communicate with your surgeon and utilize their vast amount of knowledge and experience prior to deciding on having any cosmetic surgery.
A complication from breast implants is that it might be more difficult to detect breast cancer. Regular breast self-examination can reveal indicators of cancer occurring. Breast implants makes that kind of self-exam difficult to do. Detection of breast cancer can be impeded by scar tissues caused from this procedure.
Make a plan for your recovery care. be sure to plan out your recovery if you are going to have any sort of major procedure done such as liposuction or rhinoplasty. these types of surgeries should be handled as major procedures. You will want to make sure you surround yourself with family and friends in your road to recovery.
If you are considering cosmetic surgery for any reason other than aesthetics, it should be referred to as reconstructive surgery. There is a stigma about some types of plastic surgery, and if you simply change the vocabulary associated with your procedure, you can avoid the judgment of others.
If your surgery is cosmetic, make an effort to find out what care you will need after the surgery. this information can have important consequences, and not just for yourself. in some cases, you may require close supervision; the people helping you should have a clear idea of your aftercare needs.
Before considering plastic surgery, try to fix what you’re not happy with. while most cosmetic surgery is safe, there are still risks and possible complications. You can avoid these risks by choosing alternatives; any procedure related to weight can be replaced by a healthier lifestyle for instance.
You are going to need plenty of rest after the operation. If you overdo it, you can cause yourself medical harm. Ask the doctor how long you need to recover, and what things you should and should not be doing. keep the tips from the preceding paragraphs in mind so that your experience is the best possible.

LONG ISLAND, NY — (Marketwire) — 08/08/12 — According to the latest study from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), breast augmentation was the most popular procedure out of the 13.8 million cosmetic procedures performed last year, up 4% over 2010 with more than 307,000 surgeries. The plastic surgeons at Long Island Plastic Surgical Group (LIPSG) have also observed an increase in the number of mommy makeovers in their practice, which combines any number of procedures, such as a breast augmentation with a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), into a single surgery to improve the body’s appearance after childbirth and nursing.
LIPSG’s doctors consult with hundreds of mommy makeover patients each year, often finding that mom’s appreciate the chance to combine procedures instead of undergoing separate surgeries with multiple recovery periods. Moms are also complementing surgical procedures with less invasive treatments such as injectables to refresh the face.
The five most common mommy makeover procedures performed by LIPSG Surgeons are:
Cosmetic Breast SurgeryWhether pregnancy and breastfeeding have caused loss of volume and/or droopiness in the breasts, LIPSG plastic surgeons will determine if a breast augmentation, breast lift, or combination of both is the right procedure. According to the ASPS, breast augmentation was the leading cosmetic surgery procedure in 2011, up 4% from 2010. During this surgery, a silicone or saline implant is placed in the breast to create a fuller bust line. For women experiencing droopiness in the breasts, a lift may be recommended to remove and tighten excess skin in the area to lift them into a higher position.
Tummy TuckAddressing the area of the body most impacted by childbearing, an abdominoplasty (or tummy tuck), may be performed to restore a woman’s pre-pregnancy body. During a tummy tuck, the stretched stomach muscles are tightened and excess skin is removed to create a flatter and firmer stomach.
LiposuctionAlso in the ASPS Top 5 list with over 200,000 procedures in 2011, liposuction removes excess pockets of fat in areas such as the thighs, love handles, abdomen, and buttocks.
Facial RejuvenationAs signs of aging and loss of sleep appear on the face, surgical and non-surgical options are available to create a refreshed and younger look. BOTOX® Cosmetic and other types of injectables such as JUVEDERM® and Sculptra®, can restore volume in the face and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. last year, BOTOX® was the #1 minimally invasive procedure, followed by injectable treatments.
For women seeking to correct droopy eyelids and puffy under-eye bags, eyelid surgery can be performed to smooth the skin around the eyes. The ASPS reported almost 200,000 eyelid surgeries performed in 2011, making it one of the top 5 cosmetic surgery procedures last year.
Stretch mark ReductionTo reduce the appearance of stretch marks that may result from pregnancy, LIPSG’s medical spa, Aesthetic Center, offers a FDA-cleared non-ablative laser to promote new tissue and collagen growth. As a result, the texture and color of new and mature marks are able to improve.
The highly trained and experienced plastic surgeons at Long Island Plastic Surgical Group understand that each woman requires a combination of procedures customized for her body and personal goals. While it is beneficial for any individual to understand their cosmetic enhancement options, a consultation with a qualified plastic surgeon is the best way to determine the right procedure.
