HealthyAnswers.com reports new research and treatment paths for hearing loss.

Delray Beach, FL (PRWEB) August 10, 2012

In Part II, of a 2-part series on Hearing Loss, HealthyAnswers.com related several types of new research leading to new treatments for hearing loss. they include a) Gene therapy. Research out of Emory University in Atlanta focuses on regenerating the sensory hair cells that send electrical signals that get interpreted by the brain as sounds. b) Molecular deafness. Sheffield University (England) researchers have found a possible molecular cause for deafness – the mutation of the mR-96 RNA molecule.

This molecule helps produce the sensory hair cells that send sound signals to the brain. Treatment with drugs or gene therapy to stop/change the molecule’s mutation may restore hearing loss. c) Heredity-type deafness. Yale University researchers have identified a molecular pathway disturbance in the mitochondrial DNA inherited through the mother that accounts for deafness. Researchers found if they removed the protein responsible for this process, they could restore hearing in the mice tested. d) Acupuncture. Researchers out of Korea have found that acupuncture treatment within 51 days of sudden idiopathic sensorineural hearing loss – 30 decibels or more over 3 days – can recover about 24 decibels of hearing.

HealthyAnswers.com resident medical expert, Mark Rosenberg,M.D., comments on hearing loss, “Hearing loss can be caused by a number of things including heredity, loud headphones, blocked ear canal, age, antibiotics, environmental toxins or injury to the ears/head, or noise around your home or work place. it can be a devastating, frustrating condition to live with that can make you irritable, depressed, and lead to physical illness. Research done by the National Council on Aging showed that people who did not use a hearing aid, had higher levels of social withdrawal, were less communicative, less emotionally stable and had problems with concentration.”

Transvestite Makeovers Using Makeup For Male to Female Transformation

Being transgendered in today’s world is growing more and more acceptable and for us lucky girls there is a whole new world opening up to us to express our true femininity and sexuality. part of this is to be able to cross dress in a way which is passable and acceptable to the world we live. Having a new hairdo at your local salon or having a transvestite makeover or buying some great clothes at a local shop or online where the staff understand our needs and are transgender friendly.

Millions of people now like to cross dress and they want to learn how to do it properly so they can step into the other gender role, this includes dressing for the occasion having the skills to create the illusion from a very good male female makeover, or they want to learn voice feminization techniques and all of which helps to allow a smooth transition with very little heartache because we can blend in nicely to our everyday lives as a passable and accepted member of the female gender role. There are also those of us who wish to dress to kill, so to speak, and want to take the extreme makeup and clothes route and this would tend to steer toward the drag makeover person – we all have our special desires when it comes to male to female makeup makeover needs.

It is worth noting that clothing that can look great on a woman does NOT always look great on a transgender, transvestite, or cross dresser so please be aware of this and find transvestite clothing that makes you passable as a woman or doesn’t make you look to big, wide or tall.

As a man who wished to cross dress as a women and create the ultimate illusion of being a female or if you wish to be a woman (transsexual) then you will need to learn and master the art of a transvestite makeover. the art of the makeup makeover is to learn how to apply makeup, how much to apply and what makeup products to use to best suit the male skin types. Again, all skin types vary so it is a good idea to get some professional advice from a makeup artist or a good makeup makeover book or cross dressing guide. There are a few brilliant makeup guides which have been written by experienced transgender and cross dressers specifically for us and they are worth buying as a good transvestite makeover is the no.1 starting point for being able to pass as a female. Note: There are a few really great makeup products for transgender people, and a lot of transvestites do use a makeup range called ‘Dermablend by Vichy’ which to me could be classed as a miracle product and one which I would not personally be without.

It is good to understand that learning to cross dress the correct way will take you on an enjoyable and lifelong journey and be one of discovery to your true inner self. however, when you first start out it can be common that you will be nervous or even over keen to dress in some outrageous clothes, shoes and makeup but you should bear in mind that not everyone will accept the way you look, at least not to start with, and you should be prepared for how others will react to you and if you are prepared for this then it will make it much easier to deal with the knock backs – don’t let anybody or anything put you off your dreams or ambitions as a transgender person.

By by BEN WALKERAP Baseball Writer

NEW YORK (AP) – Joba Chamberlain took a few steps off the mound and exhaled. the crowd at Yankee Stadium also let loose.

Once a fan favorite, Chamberlain got jeered Thursday after yet another shaky outing for the new York Yankees, this time in a 10-6 loss to the Texas Rangers.

“Honestly, I didn't hear it,” Chamberlain said. “I would boo, too.”

“It didn't hurt my feelings,” he said. “My own son booed me, so I guess that keeps it in perspective.”

Craig Gentry turned a spot start into a tiebreaking hit off Chamberlain in the seventh inning and Texas avoided a four-game sweep in a matchup of AL division leaders.

Texas had lost eight straight at Yankee Stadium overall. the hard-hitting Rangers had done little in this series, too, totaling only four runs before the finale.

Chamberlain gave up four hits while getting four outs. He has a 9.00 ERA in six games for new York, allowing 13 hits in six innings.

The Yankees and their fans had high hopes when the hard-throwing reliever rejoined the team after an injury-interrupted season. He began the year recovering from Tommy John surgery, then dislocated his ankle during spring training in a trampoline accident with his 5-year-old son.

“It's frustrating,” Chamberlain said.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi says inconsistency is Chamberlain's biggest problem and that “right now I don't have any plans to make any changes.”

“We said all along when we brought him back that he would be a factor in September,” Girardi said.

Texas took a 2-0 lead into the sixth before both teams broke loose with the bats. it was a seesaw after that, with the Yankees rallying for a 5-4 lead before the Rangers came back with three in the seventh.

David Murphy hit a tying RBI double off Boone Logan (4-1) and, after an intentional walk that loaded the bases, the speedy Gentry lined a tiebreaking single up the middle.

Gentry started for the first time in two weeks and tied a career best with three RBIs. Adrian Beltre also drove in three runs while Josh Hamilton doubled twice and scored three times.

Ichiro Suzuki got three hits for the Yankees, who had won seven of eight.

Ivan Nova wound up with a no-decision that left him with just one win in his last seven starts. in trouble early, he struck out Hamilton on three pitches with the bases loaded and no outs in the third and escaped that jam without allowing a run.

Nova tweaked his groin fielding Gentry's comebacker to end the fourth, and stayed in the game.

“I think he'll make his next start. We'll see,” Girardi said.

The Yankees closed to 7-6 in the bottom half on Mark Teixeira's RBI grounder. Reliever Michael Kirkman struck out Andruw Jones, who'd homered the previous inning, with runners at the corners to prevent further damage.

Beltre added a sacrifice fly and Geovany Soto hit an RBI single in the eighth, finishing Chamberlain.

Down 4-0, the Yankees once again picked on Derek Holland while rallying for five runs in the sixth.

Batting cleanup for the first time this season, Jones tied it with a two-out, two-run homer that umpires confirmed on video review. Texas third baseman Beltre pointed foul the whole time Jones rounded the bases, but the replay showed the ball clearly landed several feet inside the left-field foul pole.

Rookie right fielder Mike Olt dropped Casey McGehee's fly for a two-base error and Russell Martin met reliever Tanner Scheppers with a go-ahead single.

Holland began the afternoon 0-5 with a 9.26 ERA against the Yankees in regular-season play, though he has beaten them in relief during the playoffs.

Scheppers (1-0) won his first big league decision.

NOTES: Yankees 2B Robinson Cano didn't start for the second straight day because of a stiff neck. He walked as a pinch hitter in the eighth and pulled into third on a double by Suzuki – some fans thought Cano could've scored on the play. … Derek Jeter's RBI single in the Yankees sixth extended his hitting streak to 12 games. … Yankees RHP Phil Hughes starts Friday night at home against Boston.

Botox in Bed: Hotels Offer Plastic Surgery to Guests

Botox has become a household name, with woman around the country willing to go under the needle in the name of less wrinkles. Upscale hotels are now capitalizing in on this quest for the perfect face, with in-house cosmetic surgeons.

The Four Seasons Austin Residences in  the Four Seasons Hotel in Austin, Texas, is opening a dermatology and cosmetic surgery practices inside the main floor. the hotel’s concierge Lorley Musiol told NBCNews.com, “It’s rare to find a plastic surgeon in a downtown market. so this should appeal to hotel guests such as women whose husbands are here for a meeting and to people who work and live in the city.”

Like Us on Facebook

The dermatology center inside the upscale hotel will offer minor procedures like Botox and chemical peels at first and starting next year more in-depth cosmetic procedures such as liposuction and breast augmentation.

Bjorn Hanson, divisional dean of New York University’s Preston Robert Tisch Center for Hospitality, Tourism, and Sports Management said to NBCNews.com that it’s a trend that has been around beginning in the 1970s when luxury hotels began to market to patients and “creating relationships with hospitals and cosmetic surgery practices, so patients could have privacy during the initial recovery following surgery.”

It’s not just the Four Seasons who are offering cosmetic procedures. Hotels such as the Mountain Health Sap at the Royal Spa Kitzbühel Hotel in Austria opened with one of the country’s premiere plastic surgeouns on board. a press release from the hotel says, “The combination of sports, nutrition and surgery is the new signature of the hotel. the interest in beauty procedures is increasing. People are placing more importance on a radiant, fresh appearance, and beauty builds confidence. Procedures include not only major operations, but also minor treatments such as wrinkle injections or mini-facelifts to make the stress disappear from your face,”

This new market  is changing the way many hotels do business and Musiol says that the hotel is trying to create promotions that involve services from the cosmetic surgery clinic. “We’re both on the same Facebook page, and I see they’re already tweeting free frown line Botox for the first 100 customers,” she says.

KFVS12 News & Weather Cape Girardeau, Carbondale, Poplar BluffBeverage companies pay millions to conserve water

WEST COLUMBIA, Texas (AP) – Fifty miles outside the nation's fourth-largest city is a massive field of waist-high grass, buzzing bees and palm-size butterflies, just waiting to be ripped up by an entrepreneur.

Rather than develop this pristine remnant of coastal prairie, vast enough to house more than 300 football fields, the Dr Pepper Snapple Group is investing hundreds of thousands of dollars to ensure it remains untouched.

The project is part of the company's $1.1 million investment in the Nature Conservancy, designed to benefit five Texas watersheds – including Nash Prairie outside of Houston – from which its bottling plants draw water. The money will go toward preservation work, such as reseeding the grass, to restore and expand an ecosystem that once covered 6 million acres from southwestern Louisiana through Texas.

The projects will improve water quality and quantity by preserving the prairies' sponge-like attributes. but for Dr Pepper and other beverage companies engaged in similar work, the impetus is their bottom line – conserving water guarantees long-term access to the most crucial ingredient in their products.

“If there's not fresh water, there's no business – it's just that simple,” said Laura Huffman, state director of the Nature Conservancy in Texas. “It is their number one infrastructure concern. … Water tops the list, above roads, above energy, above all else, because if you don't get water right, you're not making anything.”

The biggest players – from Coca-Cola and Pepsi co. to Miller and MolsonCoors – as well as smaller, regional beverage companies list water as a risk in long-term plans. In 2006, 18 companies created an alliance called the Beverage Industry Environmental Roundtable to tackle water, energy and other issues that could affect the industry's growth. There is no total available for how much has been invested in water conservation projects in the past five years, but experts believe it's more than $500 million dollars.

Thomas Lyon, a professor at the University of Michigan who researches connections between industry and the environment, said three factors have pushed beverage companies to conserve water: future markets in developing countries don't drink enough soft drinks, from their perspective; the impacts of climate change are starting to become more apparent; and some of the countries targeted for growth are the same ones experts believe will be most affected by climate change.

“At the heart of it … is their bottom line,” Lyon said. “Water is a finite resource and they desperately realize that it could become a major problem.”

About a decade ago, when advance planning started to highlight water constraints, many companies streamlined processes and installed new, more efficient technologies within factories and plants, conserving millions of gallons of water and millions of dollars.

About five years ago, the corporations began partnering with environmental groups, funding projects to bring water to people in developing countries, such as India, China and Africa, where water is most scarce and infrastructure is often deficient.

The partnerships help everyone: environmental groups receive much sought-after funding; cash-strapped governments tackle projects they can't afford; and beverage companies can market themselves as “green” by conserving the most crucial, finite resource on Earth and ensure the future of their business.

And while the companies are taking steps to conserve water and, in many cases, cut energy use and greenhouse gas emissions, they still contribute to a larger global problem: they bottle many of their products in plastic. By some estimates, 2.5 million plastic bottles are trashed every hour in the United States – and less than 30 percent is recycled.

Between 2008 and 2010, 69 percent of the alliance's 1,600 manufacturing facilities decreased water use by 9 percent – or 10.3 billion gallons, enough to supply new York City for eight days.

To combat the toll on the environment, Dr Pepper cleaned bottles with air instead of water on 56 production lines in 2010, and by 2015, it hopes to cut water use and wastewater discharge by 10 percent for each gallon of finished product.

“As a beverage company, water is in everything we do, it's a primary ingredient,” said Tim Gratto, Dr Pepper's vice president of sustainability.

The Coca-Cola co. has committed to improving water efficiency by 20 percent by the end of this year and becoming water neutral – returning to the environment any water used. The company is already returning 35 percent.

“We know the importance of water to the world and the planet, and we know the importance of water to our business,” said Bea Perez, the company's chief sustainability officer, explaining that the company's long-term plans define water “as a life blood … but also as a risk.”

For Pepsi co., the wakeup call came when it laid out four possible scenarios for 2030 and discovered water was the greatest risk in each. Last year, Pepsi met its goal of becoming 20 percent more efficient by 2015, saving the company some $17 million in water expenses over five years, said Dan Bena, the company's director of sustainability.

Pepsi's other goal is to provide 3 million people with access to clean drinking water by 2015, and has partnered with environmental groups to focus on rural areas in parts of the developing world. each day, Bena said, 200 million hours are spent hauling water to communities that have no plumbing – more hours than all employees at Wal-Mart, UPS, McDonalds, IBM, Target and Kroger work in a week.

If you free up that time, he said, people can work more, making money that could potentially be spent buying Pepsi products.

And for beverage companies, that's the point.

“If you don't address it, it's a significant risk,” Bena said. “If you do proactively address it … you turn them into opportunities.”

Most companies partner with environmental groups that have the scientific knowledge to guarantee success.

The partnership between Coca-Cola and the World Wildlife Fund expanded its focus in 2007 from rivers and streams near the company's Atlanta headquarters to preserving high-profile waterways, such as the Central Europe's Danube River and the Yangtze, Asia's longest river, said WWF CEO Carter Roberts.

“As a society, we're going to have a huge crash if all these companies don't take action at the same time,” Roberts said.

What to Expect From the Body After a Tummy Tuck

Tummy tucks are some of the most effective and dramatic surgeries for transforming your body’s figure, but without the proper preparation of your mind and body the recovery can be harrowing. Good nutrition, the right exercise, preparing your home for the recovery, taking enough time off of work and avoiding smoking can all turn what could have been a terrible experience into an easy and rewarding one.

The first thing to understand about recovering from a tummy tuck is that the better shape your body is in before the surgery, the faster you’ll bounce back. Fresh fruits and vegetables, vitamin supplements, and at least a half mile vigorous walk every day are the best preparation. of course, avoiding unhealthy habits such as smoking is just as important. for at least three to four weeks before surgery a healthy routine will leave your body and spirit in the best shape to undergo anesthesia and surgery. Getting back to regular activities after the tummy tuck will be faster and swelling and bruising will disappear more quickly. The payback for healthy living before surgery will be a stunning figure and a quicker recovery.

The second important component to a great recovery is setting up the rest of your busy life to make that recovery as easy as possible. Depending on your lifestyle and the kind of work you do, you need to take from one to three weeks off. Since avoiding heavy lifting (anything heavier than a gallon of milk) after the surgery is a must, everything about your life needs to be arranged beforehand. Stock up on groceries, make arrangements for the kids to get to school, set up your bedroom without clutter and without the need to use any stairs. A very helpful trick is to sleep in a recliner for the first few days (if you don’t have one, these can rented for a minimal price–the electric ones even help you stand up). Getting your busy life in order before the surgery will take a lot of the stress off of you after the tummy tuck.

The last and most important thing is to pick the right doctor. Tummy tucks should only be performed by Plastic Surgeons board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. your doctor needs to be someone who has personally spoken to you, answered all your questions and addressed all of your concerns. A warm, caring and competent surgeon will give you the confidence to get through the surgery and recover quickly.

Chimp attack victim to return to U.S.

University of Texas at San Antonio graduate student Andrew F. Oberle, who was severely mauled in late June by chimpanzees at a primate sanctuary in South Africa, will return to the United States for further treatment next week, a hospital official said Thursday.

A spokeswoman for the Saint Louis University Hospital in Oberle’s hometown in Missouri said he’s expected to be transferred to the facility next week.

While the 26-year-old anthropology student was leading tourists at the Jane Goodall Institute South Africa Chimpanzee Eden on June 28, two chimpanzees attacked him after he crossed between fences to fetch a rock the chimps often hurled at bystanders, officials said.

At one point, he was in a medically induced coma after several surgeries to address his wounds, relatives have said.

Hospital spokeswoman Laura Keller said she didn’t know Oberle’s current condition but confirmed that Dr. Bruce Kraemer, the hospital’s chief of plastic surgery, will supervise Oberle’s care in St. Louis.

“We are hesitant to talk about his condition until our physicians have an opportunity to assess him,” Keller said.

The Associated Press reported Oberle likely will have extensive facial reconstructive surgery.

Of his nephew’s upcoming return to St. Louis, Oberle’s uncle, Carl F. Oberle Jr., said: “Oh my God, it’s all we’ve been waiting for. … I just want him home, too, because I think we’ll be able to take care of him.”

“I’m just so happy to get to see him and hold him and talk to him,” he said.

Carl Oberle had planned to fly to San Antonio for an Aug. 12 music fundraiser for his nephew but may cancel his trip depending on when he arrives in the United States.

Jeff Glatz, a singer-songwriter with the band Peacefield has helped arrange the fundraiser at Sam’s Burger Joint from 1 p.m. to 10: 30 p.m. Aug. 12.

Glatz said Oberle used to come to the rock band’s shows. The event’s $10 cover will be donated to Oberle as will money from raffling prizes, he said.

A fundraising campaign launched by local billionaire B.J. “Red” McCombs through United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County had raised nearly $67,000 by Thursday. an online fundraiser arranged by Andrew Oberle’s roommates had raised more than $28,000.

On Monday, the Associated Press reported that officials with Chimpanzee Eden planned to reintroduce the chimpanzees involved in the attack — Amadeus and Nikki — to the sanctuary in separate cages and monitor their behavior before allowing contact with other chimpanzees.

Rescuers shot Nikki in the leg and abdomen during the attack and the chimp was treated at Johannesburg Zoo before returning to the sanctuary last weekend.

Amadeus had been in solitary confinement since the incident, the Associated Press reported.

Seeing a City Through Instagram

what does your city look like at this moment?

new photography website This is Now tries to answer that question. The site posts a live feed of five different cities, comprised of all of the publicly-shared photos taken with Instagram. The site features new York, Sao Paulo, London, Sydney, and Tokyo. as photos are taken and shared, they pop up onto the screen, presenting a disconnected mosaic from dozens of different vantage points.

Relying on geo-tags, the site pulls in photos taken and shared publicly – even accidentally. Instagram's default setting makes all pictures public.

some cities are more active than others. but in a short survey, pre-lunch new York and post-dinner Sao Paulo are the most photo-happy.

And, not surprisingly, some pictures are more interesting than others. There's a fair amount of self-portraits (some veering into the slightly risque), views of skylines, food and drinks, and lots and lots of pictures of people standing in front of stuff. Though this might not be the highest quality photography, the live nature of it and its dispersed anonymity create a unique picture.

according to this article from the Daily Mail, This is Now's creators are hoping to expand to other cities soon. Now that Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamanei is using Instagram, could Tehran be next?

KFVS12 News & Weather Cape Girardeau, Carbondale, Poplar BluffAuthorities trying to ID 14 killed in Texas crash

By CHRISTOPHER SHERMANAssociated Press

McALLEN, Texas (AP) – with little more than photographs and fingerprints, authorities were trying to identify 14 suspected illegal immigrants who were killed when a pickup truck packed with nearly two dozen people crashed in South Texas in one of the nation's deadliest immigrant smuggling accidents.

The victims – men, women and children – were carrying toothbrushes, toothpaste and changes of socks and underwear but no identification. Authorities said the white Ford F250 was carrying 23 immigrants from Mexico, Honduras and Guatemala when it veered off a highway and crashed into trees Sunday night.

“It's the worst single-vehicle wreck I've worked in my 40 years in the funeral business,” said Adrian Fulton, a local funeral home director who picked up the 11 people who died at the scene. Fulton estimated their ages from 8 to 30, and he said Homeland Security Investigations agents came Monday to photograph and fingerprint the dead.

Federal immigration agents are looking into the human smuggling aspect of the case, while public safety authorities are investigating the cause of the crash in Goliad County, about 150 miles northeast of the Mexican border. The crash scene is less than an hour's drive from the site of the nation's most deadly immigrant smuggling case, where 19 immigrants died in 2003 after being placed in a sweltering trailer.

Six of those who died in Sunday's crash were still inside the cab of the mangled vehicle and one was in the truck's bed when emergency crews arrived at the scene, said Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman Gerald Bryant. Others were scattered on the roadway and in a ditch between the pavement and the fence line where the truck stopped.

Bryant said he saw at least two young children among the dead.

“This is the most people I've seen in any passenger vehicle, and I've been an officer for 38 years,” he said.

It is not uncommon for human traffickers to try to maximize profits by over-loading vehicles with illegal immigrants as they head north from the Texas-Mexico border. In April, nine Mexican immigrants died near the border when the teenage driver of their van crashed after fleeing Border Patrol. There were 18 people in that minivan.

In that case, six adults face a variety of federal charges and the 15-year-old driver was charged in state court with nine counts of murder.

Sunday's accident happened around 6:30 p.m. on a rural yet busy stretch of U.S. Highway 59, which runs diagonally from the Mexican border at Laredo to Houston before turning north and running to the Canadian border. The pickup was heading north when it drove off the right side of the highway near the unincorporated community of Berclair, about 90 miles southeast of San Antonio, and struck two large trees, Bryant said.

He said it could be another week or two before the DPS accident reconstruction team finishes its work, and that investigators were trying to confirm the name of the driver, who was killed at the scene.

The truck was registered in Houston to someone other than the driver, Bryant said. a woman who answered at the address where the truck was registered said she was the daughter of the man listed at the owner. But she said they had sold the truck and it was no longer theirs. when asked when the sale took place, she hung up.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokesman Greg Palmore said the 11 men and three females who died included citizens of Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras.

Victor Corzo, the head of legal affairs at the Mexican consulate in San Antonio, said the only Mexican citizen involved was a 22-year-old man from Tamaulipas, the state in northern Mexico bordering Texas. Corzo said the consulate was still working to notify the man's family.

Bryant told The associated Press that several of the survivors of Sunday's crash had life-threatening injuries. he did not have their official conditions but described them as “very serious.” The injured were taken to hospitals in San Antonio, Victoria and Corpus Christi.

In a statement, the Guatemalan government said that at least two Guatemalans died in the accident, a 27-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman. it said government officials “deeply lamented” their deaths and that its consulate in Houston has been in constant contact with Texas authorities.
