Ageing may be as old as time itself and one of the few inevitabilities of life, but that doesn’t stop us seeking out the secret to eternal youth.
And it is a universal obsession, with even a cursory look at websites and newspapers revealing column inches devoted to ‘has she, or hasn’t she had work done’ stories, alongside those embarrassing and unflattering shots of ageing beauty queens or screen stars.
It seems no matter who you are, or what you’ve achieved, as a woman, ageing is non-negotiable.
Former Olympic swimmer Sharron Davies stepped into the pundit’s chair for the first day of the games coverage recently, and has already been pilloried by a female columnist for her ‘Botoxed’ appearance.
Despite this, though, more young women are determined to undergo surgery to transform themselves into an ideal woman.
Virtually all the TOWIE girls have had some form of cosmetic treatment with boob jobs and collagen lip injections among the favourites.
One Belfast-based therapist believes state-of-the-art skin scanning technology which shows women how much their skin has actually aged could be a start. she also claims scientifically innovative products and facials rather than succumbing to surgery is a more successful route to younger-looking skin.
And she could be onto something, as former Dukes of Hazzard star Catherine Bach, who played the sexy and sassy
Daisy Duke 30 years ago, was splashed across the pages recently clad in a swimsuit on a beach in Hawaii. The 58-year-old actress may have a bit of cellulite on those famous pins now and was not sporting her infamous itsy-bitsy ‘Daisy Duke’ shorts, but neither is she a walking and talking example of a bad plastic surgeon’s mistakes with a garish facelift, trout pout or botched lipo.
Environ skin scanning consultant Elaine O’Roarty explains how the technique is helping women protect the healthy skin they have from premature ageing.
“The Environ philosophy is that by protecting your skin from UV rays, pollution, bad diet and stress we can prevent premature ageing and maintain a healthy, beautiful skin for a lifetime,” she says.
As a 45-year-old, I recently went along for a consultation to Elaine’s salon Seventh Heaven Therapies in Rosetta, where I was subjected to the power Visia imaging technology which highlights all manner of flaws, from wrinkles, sun damage, brown pigmentation blemishes, capillary damage, scars or imperfections and congested pores. It’s not for the faint-hearted!
Not surprisingly sun damage and imperfections showed up. and while it would be easy to dismiss the process as a bid to sell you products, and indeed a tailored skincare regime is recommended, Environ has a slightly more scientific approach in that you revisit the salon to have your skin scanned again — to see if the products are actually working.
In my opinion if women didn’t see an improvement in their skin, they just wouldn’t be back — and they’d tell their friends.
The whole package consists of facials and a ‘prescription’ of specific Environ skincare lotions and potions, as well as collagen-boosting vitamins in my case, all aimed at reclaiming and preserving your skin’s radiance. you can’t ‘self-medicate’ by buying the products yourself, it doesn’t work like that, the core principle here is that each person’s individual skincare needs are assessed and diagnosed.
The products, meanwhile, are claimed to bridge the gap between modern medical science and beauty therapy due to the high dose of vitamin a in the cosmetic creams.
So, how did I fare with my Environ regime? at the time I had taken antibiotics for an infection that didn’t want to get better, which resulted in a dry section on my usually combination skin. Elaine recommended a facial wash, cleanser, alcohol-free toner and an eye cream which I should apply to the extra dry skin. Having tried many, many products I loved using the Environ range and am still using the toner and facial wash.
Elaine would point out, however, that it is a regime and all the recommendations should be used together for maximum benefit. it is pricey, though, with my skincare, vitamins and make-up totting up to a whopping £400!
But with my products lasting up to three months plus, longer for the cosmetics, it is considerably cheaper that Botox et al, which range in price from £200 upwards for one jab. a RAD SPF 15 for my face is another essential part of the my routine now, following SPFs contained in some beauty products recently being discredited.
Personally, I believe the condition of your skin is part genetics and part-environmental. it makes sense to always protect your skin from the sun, even in rainy Northern Ireland, as we now know it causes premature ageing and worse.
I have, though, always cleansed, toned and moisturised my skin using the best products that agree with my skin as it changes over time.
My skin is more demanding now than it was when I was 20, but for those who shy away from the knife or fear an unsuccessful procedure, Environ could be a gentler solution.
