New Zealanders who have made it in LA

Not everyone in LA is a struggling actor. Amanda Linnell meets four new Zealanders beating a different path to success.

FIONA CONNORArtist

We found Fiona Connor sitting on the floor next to a set of stairs with a couple of fellow artists, photocopying paper. They are in the soaring foyer of the Hammer Museum, one of LA’s most cutting-edge arts institutions with a reputation for its varied contemporary collections and provocative exhibitions. Connor is a participating artist in Made in LA, an exhibition that focuses on the works of 60 LA-based early and mid-career artists.

The stairs Connor is sitting next to are, in fact, her show installation Lobbies on Wilshire, 2012; and are a perfect reflection of the actual stairs that a group of UCLA students are currently and noisily climbing to get into the spacious gallery which loops around a zen-like courtyard. The work, explains Connor, is about taking something out of its normal context, using it and viewing it in a different way. The stairs have been used as seats for group discussions, and today as a platform for the piles of photocopied paper which also are part of the installation; the words written on them are snippets of conversations Connor has overheard in the gallery and discussions between her fellow artists. indeed, as we sit for the interview at a little table near the photocopier, we, too, are part of the installation.

to be invited to show at the Hammer is quite a thing and a reflection of just how far Connor has come in her career. she graduated from the University of Auckland in 2004 with a Bachelor Fine Arts/Bachelor of Arts, and moved to LA in 2009 to attend the California Institute for the Arts. she graduated with a Masters of Fine Art last year. Studying in LA, she admits, definitely opened her up to the American art world a lot faster than if she’d stayed closer to home. in LA she has a strong network of artist friends, she doesn’t have a studio but plans to and she has a growing fan base through commissions and sales.

“LA makes you – keeps you – curious every day,” explains Connor. “And with that comes the question to yourself why are you here? This city is so broken, it doesn’t really care… anything goes, but nothing goes.”

like all LA locals, Connor is quick to recommend places to eat, drink, shop, explore. “There are a lot of closed doors in LA, but once you get behind them it’s amazing. last Monday night I was in this club that was rammed with total freaks and I had one of those seminal LA moments and the thought ‘I’m never going to leave’,” laughs Connor.

* Connor is represented in Auckland by the Hopkinson Cundy Gallery where she will be holding an exhibition next month from September 13. A solo exhibition of her work, Untitled (Mural Design), is currently on display until August 12.

ADAM BORICHRestaurant owner

having Morgan Freeman around for dinner is not an everyday occurrence for Adam Borich, but it is the kind of thing that happens when you live in LA.

Borich, who owns two gourmet pizza restaurants, Lucifer’s Pizza in Hollywood’s Los Feliz and Melrose Ave, is used to seeing stars – he counts Eva Mendez, Brian Austin Green and Megan Fox as regular customers – but Morgan Freeman coming for a dinner on Christmas Eve thanks to a mutual friend, was a highlight. “He’s the nicest guy. loved my turkey stew and insisted we do the haka for him,” laughs Borich, who admits first falling for LA when he was an 8-year-old on a family trip to Disneyland. he returned in 1998, representing the City of Waitakere as part of its student exchange with Huntington Beach and from then on was hooked. “I knew I had to find a way to live in sunny California one day. It just took me 10 years to do it.”

Giving up a corporate career in new Zealand and selling his house, Borich took the plunge, five and half years ago, after seeing how bad the pizzas on offer in LA were, even though it was one of the most popular food choices. “LA had not seen anything like a lamb pizza or my favourite SPQR shrimp pizza, so it was a bit of a task to try and get them to open their minds and choose something other than a mozzarella or pepperoni pizza. I now own and run two award-winning gourmet pizza places in Hollywood. My job has changed from the early days of slugging it out in the kitchen, day-in day-out, to now focusing on growing the business and opening our new location on Melrose Ave. It keeps me pretty busy but it’s great to see that we have built up a great name for ourselves and the early work paid off. I now have over 20 employees, so learning to how to manage them is the biggest challenge.

“Unfortunately the city has a huge turnover. you meet some amazing people who arrive bright-eyed and bushy-tailed with a dream to make it in Hollywood and it can be sad watching them slowly run out of patience and money and have to say goodbye to move back home, burnt out and disappointed. It can really be a tough city in that regard. The entertainment business, which is the big pull factor for so many people, is one of the roughest and most difficult beasts I have ever encountered.”

Working in the hospitality industry means Borich is regularly invited to events and parties. “The good thing about LA is that every night is like a weekend night. there are some pretty fun things happening. I have recently found a new escape, riding horses in the Hollywood hills way up under the Hollywood sign. you have the most amazing view over LA. It’s hard to believe you can do that right in the middle of this huge city.

“I also love hanging out at friends’ houses and just chilling. I try to visit my friends down at the beach as many weekends as possible. I have a cool beach cruiser bike I keep out there and we try and go for a bike ride along the beach as often as we can. It’s a great escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.”

When it comes to LA style, Borich confesses to wearing the first thing he sees in his wardrobe, and says he was more conscious of how he looked in new Zealand “because the bars and clubs there are so strict about dress codes. here they will let you in in jandals. I think the woman here dress up and are more obsessed with how they look. The plastic surgery thing here is just awful and that just scares me. these people all end up looking like cat women, including the men.”

ANDREW (STAN) AND NATALIE STANISICH Cafe owner & senior project manager, Guess ECommerce

in true LA style we are drinking cold, crisp white wine, sitting in the dappled sunlight of a garden bar of a discreet hotel just off Sunset Boulevard. Across the table from me are Stan and Natalie Stanisich, who moved to LA three years ago after she won a green card in the US Diversity Programme. “I just entered on a whim,” she smiles. “I’d always felt at home here when we visited, so we thought let’s give it a go.”

For the 14 years prior to their move, LA had more or less been Stan’s second home as he worked as a flight attendant for Air new Zealand. “I really developed a love for the city,” he explains, “and we knew that we wanted to live near the ocean and that ultimately, I would open a cafe.”

The pair settled in North Rodondo, 10 minutes from Manhattan Beach, where they found the perfect site for the cafe. It took two years before the doors opened, and in that time Stan worked for Apple. “It was an amazing opportunity to work for one of the hottest retailers on the planet, and learn the buying and working habits of Americans. There’s a lot ideas and information that I gathered in that time that I use in the running of the cafe.”

The cafe is two Guns Espresso and the only place, says Stan, where you can find a flat white in the South Bay. “As they say here, it’s easy to find a bad coffee, but hard to find a good one. At two Guns we’ve been slowly educating people – providing smaller, stronger coffees, and explaining that a big coffee of poor quality is not better.

“It’s been a real talking point as has being a new Zealander. We have had to work hard to build relationships with the local community, but it’s wonderful being part of that, having our regulars, employing locals.”

For the elegant Natalie, her experience in new Zealand developing the digital brands for fashion companies soon saw her making contacts in LA. It was while freelancing for the leading international fashion house Guess that she was offered the role of senior project manager of the eCommerce department at their world headquarters in downtown LA. she oversees the production of the creative assets, promotional assets and brand engagement across three brands. “It’s creative and collaborative, which I love,” she enthuses “and being involved at the very heart of such a big international company is incredibly stimulating.”

When not working, the couple enjoy the laid-back lifestyle and the “almost always” good weather. Walking on the beach, going on culinary adventures around town, holding parties at home, hiking, and weekend excursions to Palm Springs are all part of their LA life.

U.S. comedian Phyllis Diller dies at 95

August 21, 2012 – 10:31 AMT

PanARMENIAN.NetPhyllis Diller, the cackling comedian with electric-shock hair who built an influential career in film and nightclubs with stand-up routines that mocked irascible husbands, domestic drudgery and her extensive plastic surgery, died Aug 20 at her home in Brentwood, California, The Washington Post reports.

she was 95. Her manager, Milton Suchin, confirmed the death but said he did not know the cause.

although there has been a long history of comic actresses, Ms. Diller was among the first to tackle the male preserve of stand-up comedy. she used her first husband for comedic fodder by disguising him as a fictitious character named “Fang.” Her jokes — roasts of Fang’s drinking habits, sexual shortcomings and professional failures — reversed traditional household roles. she once said, “His finest hour lasted a minute and a half.”

Pacing the stage, she spoke grumpily about her unhappy sex life (like bouncing on a trampoline, she said), her lackluster kitchen skills (though she boasted of her recipe for “garbage soup”) and her struggle to keep up with totems of sexual and domestic bliss (Marilyn Monroe and Donna Reed, respectively).

“Would you believe that I once entered a beauty contest?” she said. “I must have been out of my mind. I not only came in last, I got 361 get-well cards.”

Ms. Diller’s stage appearance was ghastly — and highly calculated. Operating under the belief that attractive women could not be taken seriously in comedy, she wore shapeless, short dresses, allowing her to poke fun at her flat chest (she claimed to be the only woman in America with two backs) and her toothpick “bird legs.”

Doctor gives up license after two patient deaths in Chico

CHICO — a former Chico doctor accused of negligence in the deaths of two patients surrendered his California medical license effective Aug. 17.

In early 2010, the state Medical Board accused anesthesiologist Dr. George Chalhoub of “repeated acts of negligence” in connection with the deaths of two of his patients in 2006 and 2007.

Chalhoub was among a number of temporary anesthesiologists who worked at Enloe Medical Center in 2006 and 2007, following a contract dispute between the hospital and an anesthesiology group that had worked in Chico for many years. since March of 2007, Enloe has had a contract with a group of permanent anesthesiologists.

In 2006, at least two physicians warned that if temporary doctors were brought in to replace the veteran anesthesiologists, patient care was likely to suffer.

According to the Medical Board, Chalhoub now lives in Pennsylvania. the Enterprise-Record tried to phone him using a number that was found on the Internet. a message was left on an answering machine. the call wasn’t returned by deadline.

According to Medical Board documents, Henry “Hank” Evers, 75, of Chico, a retired veterinarian, went into the hospital for surgery to remove a brain tumor on Dec. 22, 2006.

According to a state Attorney General’s Office transcript of testimony by Dr. Edward a. Eisler, an expert witness, Chalhoub had trouble “intubating” Evers before the surgery started. Intubation is placing a plastic tube in the patient’s windpipe to keep an open airway. the transcript, which was furnished to the Enterprise-Record, stated Chalhoub made “multiple attempts” at intubation.

After the operation started, Evers’ blood pressure rose dramatically and monitors began showing he was not getting enough oxygen, according to the Medical Board accusation against Chalhoub.

Ultimately, his heart stopped beating, and he could not be revived, the accusation stated.

It said Chalhoub was negligent in not properly monitoring Evers’ condition and failing to recognize and react quickly when the crisis occurred.

The second patient listed in the accusation was Randall Perrucci, 44, of Gridley. the accusation said Perrucci went into the hospital for routine out-patient surgery on his shoulder on Feb. 8, 2007.

In this case, also, Eisler testified as an expert witness. the transcript of his testimony provided to the Enterprise-Record said Chalhoub reported that to keep Perrucci’s airway open, he placed a device to provide a seal around the opening of his larynx.

The testimony said that at 10:30 a.m., recorded data showed Perrucci was getting oxygen properly. however, by 10:56, it said, he was not getting adequate oxygen. by 10:58, it showed his blood-oxygen level was decreasing, and by 11 a.m., it had gotten very low.

At one point, the accusation said, Chalhoub realized that the patient’s heart had stopped and he was no longer breathing. He called for help.

Eisler’s testimony, based on recorded data, said that at 11:18 a.m., another anesthesiologist arrived and successfully intubated the patient. Perrucci was now getting adequate oxygen, but efforts to resuscitate him were not successful, the accusation said.

The accusation said Chalhoub was negligent in failing to quickly recognize that Perrucci was not getting adequate oxygen.

Susan Evers McCauley, Evers’ daughter, said she had worked with the Medical Board and state Attorney General’s office to ensure that Chalhoub was disciplined. She said the doctor challenged the effort to discipline him, but then, just before a hearing was to be held, surrendered his license.

“I’m very relieved,” she said. “We also did a civil suit. My primary concern was to get him off the playing field.”

Nurse statement: admits drug problem but she wrote scripts to the Fines for their use

Syracuse, NY — The nurse practitioner charged with illegally selling prescription drugs to the daughter of fired Syracuse University assistant basketball coach Bernie Fine said in a statement that she has a drug problem and some of the people she wrote prescriptions for gave the drugs back to her to use.

Court papers say Lauren Havens, of Manlius, provided prescription drugs to Sara Fine, 21. Court papers also showed prescriptions written in the names of Bernie Fine’s wife, Laurie Fine; a second daughter, Sheila Fine, 24; and son-in-law, Quint Streeter, 26, without proper authorization. The Fines are among seven people listed as receiving prescriptions for Percocet (Oxycodone) and Lorcet (Hydrocodone) from Havens.

Havens, 35, of 4605 Pewter Lane, is charged with writing the prescription to Sara Fine. she is facing a single felony count of criminal sale of a prescription for a controlled substance, a Class C felony punishable by up to 15 years in state prison.

She is accused of writing a prescription for the controlled substance Hydrocodone for Sara Fine when Fine was “not a bona fide patient” of ENT Facial Plastic Surgery where Havens was employed.

Havens admitted the misconduct in a brief written statement to a state narcotic investigator on July 20 in which she confessed to abusing hydrocodone and oxycodone herself.

She said she was using the drugs to address chronic pain and “stress/panic attacks from an abusive relationship and child custody issues.”

Havens admitted writing prescriptions for former patients Kristen Forte and Julie Moreland who would then share all or some of the drugs with her.

She said she also wrote prescriptions for the drugs for Laurie Fine, Sara and Sheila Fine, who were her former patients at Dr. Douglas Halliday’s plastic surgery practice. she indicated she wrote those prescriptions to the Fines for their own use.

She also admitted writing some prescriptions for Quint Streeter, Sheila Fine’s husband.

Havens admitted she did not maintain a patient record for any of those people.

She said in a statement that she was hired by Dr. Michael J. Paciorek this past January and that she began writing prescriptions under her husband’s name, Michael Zoli, which she filled at the Rite Aid store in Manlius for her own use.

“I realize that writing prescriptions without medical justification for nonpatients is wrong and not in good faith in the course of my professional practice,” she said. she added that she regretted her actions, hoped to get help for her addiction to opiates and to save her nursing licenses.

Height Increase Surgery – Why You Shouldn’t Waste Your Time Or Money on It

Height increase surgery is a sure shot way to add a few inches to your height. It is a painful, expensive process that only the most determined of individuals can go through, but it guarantees an increase of anything from 2-11 cm in your height. For those who are truly desperate to grow taller, this can be an effective alternative.

Height increase surgery originated in Russia, South Korea and Japan. It falls under the category of cosmetic surgery. Although this procedure is not approved in a majority of the world’s developed nations, it nonetheless has a high rate of success and has been used by tons of people in the above mentioned countries to add to their height.

This procedure works by surgically cutting a gap in the shin bones in the legs and forcing them to grow. The bones are kept apart and supported by a mechanical device. over time, the bones grow and fuse together, making height increase possible. It is possible to increase your height by up to six inches through this procedure.

But bones take an extraordinary amount of time to grow. It can take anything from 3 to 9 months to grow the bones together, depending on the amount of height increase you want. Worse, during this entire period, you are confined to your bed and can walk only with assistance.

Oh, and did I mention the pain? Cutting bones apart and forcing them to grow is excruciatingly painful. You can’t take any form of anesthesia so there is no way to numb out the pain. besides, the process takes several months, so taking a strong pain killer for such a long duration is really not possible, or recommended. For most people, this pain is too great to handle. Therefore, before you commit to a surgery like this, please understand that it will take extraordinary amount of endurance and willpower to stand all the pain.

Next, the costs. Height increase surgery is well beyond the reach of most people. The initial surgical procedure itself will cost you upwards of $50,000. after this, the 3-9 month stay in the hospital, cost of physiotherapy and medicines will take the total expenses well beyond $120,000. keep in mind that during this time you willl be confined to the hospital, so you won’t be able to make any money.

Considering the high cost and the amount of pain one has to deal with, height increase surgery is really not recommended for anyone but the truly desperate. if you are above 5’6, there is no reason for you to even consider this procedure. It is a viable solution only for people around or under 5’0.

Beauty obsession

special report Pongphon Sarnsamak The Nation August 20, 2012 1:00 am

A drastic change in the public’s perception of cosmetic surgery over the past ten years has created a huge demand among Thai consumers, who contribute most of the Bt20 billion in income that surgery clinics enjoy each year.

ten years ago, both surgeons and customers sneaked into backrooms in hospitals and beauty clinics for the operations. Now, clinics have mushroomed in all parts of the country as consumers welcome the idea of how a tiny appearance change can lead to greater beauty.

A recent survey shows that market value of the cosmetic surgery business has increased from Bt15 billion in 2010 to Bt20 billion in 2011. And this year, the value of this industry is expected to increase by another 20 percent.

Meanwhile, the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce’s Centre for Economic and Business Forecasting estimates that cosmetic surgery will be the most popular business among investors this year as more and more teenagers want to undergo the surgery.

Records from the Public Health Ministry’s Health Service Support Department showed that the number of cosmetic surgery clinics registered with the department has increased from 317 clinics in 2004 to 350 this year.

” The world has changed,” Dr Supot Sumritvanitcha, a director of Yanhee International Hospital, told The Nation in an exclusive interview.

” Every girl wants to be a super-star like Patchrapa Aum Chaichua who is being spotlighted everywhere,” he added.

In the past, people would feel significantly bad and embarrassed if their friends or relatives had known they’d been to cosmetic surgery clinics. Thai society, at that time, had strong feelings against plastic or cosmetic surgery and stigmatised those people who’d had surgery as being unhappy with their genetic heritage.

” Sometimes, people would lie to their friends or relatives about travelling abroad for vacation for two weeks – but in fact, they went to Hong Kong or Japan to undergo cosmetic surgery. When they came home [they were] more beautiful,” Supot said.

but now, appearance and personality have become more and more important for people to find opportunities and their dream job.

some parents have taken their kids to undergo cosmetic surgery at the age of 15 to pave the way for their success or to enter the entertainment industry.

Nose and eyelid surgery is the most popular among teenagers. Supot said 500 teenagers aged over 18 had visited hospital every month to undergo nose surgery and about 450 patients had undergone eyelid surgery.

Not only the number of domestic patients had increased during the past few years, the number of foreign patients had increased as well.

according to the hospital’s records, the number of foreign patients had increased from 25,611 cases in 2008 to 34,440 cases in 2010.

They are from many parts of the world such as US, Canada, Mexico, the UK, Germany, France, Netherlands, Italy, Russia, Ukraine, China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, United Arab Emirates, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Israel, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam, Singapore, Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan.

” For Western customers, many underwent nose and breast reduction surgery, and mid-facial lift,” Supot said.

Yanhee Polyclinic was opened in 1984 in a 2-block 4-storey building near the Rama 6 Bridge in Bangkok to provide medical services including weight control, general medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, intensive care, and dialysis.

following the rise inpatients, Yanhee had opened a 10-storey, 40- bed capacity hospital building on ten rai which became the Yanhee International Hospital in 1997.

Now the hospital has opened 36 treatment centres to provide general medicine and a wide range of cosmetic and plastic surgery services such as breast augmentation, facelift, tummy-tuck, liposuction, botox injection, dental whitening, facial treatment, and hair transplant.

The hospital recently opened a vaginal repair centre to restore the anatomic arrangement of structures surrounding the vaginal wall. This centre had attracted a lot of attention from customers aged between 18 and 60. at least five patients aged over 40 undergo vaginal repair surgery per day.

Supot expects the hospital will earn Bt3 million a month as revenue from this centre.

” we want to be an aesthetic institute which provides a one-stop shop for beauty,” he said.

To prepare for the Asean Economic Community in 2015, Yanhee has invested over Bt1 billion to build two new buildings and purchase new medical devices.

The hospital has planned to increase its full-time surgeons from 130 to 150 and increase the part-time surgeons from 120 to 125.

It will increase the number of professional nurses from 500 to 700 and import nurses from the Philippines to work as assistants as they can communicate well in English with foreign patients.

apart from Yanhee International Hospital, the Wuttisak Clinic group also plans to join in the competition by increasing its skincare clinics in local and foreign markets.

The company now has 109 skincare clinics across the country with more planned. The company will also expand into Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Myanmar, Malaysia and Indonesia.

at least 20 skincare clinics are marked for Vietnam next year, with four clinics located in Cambodia and four more to be set up in Laos, he added.

” we know everyone wants to be more beautiful so we’ll change the public perception of beauty. We’ll help people think [it's] doctors who make them more beautiful and not a cosmetic product,” Wuttisak Clinic’s chief executive officer Nakorn Kornherun said.

because of the rising demand in skincare treatment, the company has employed 200 general physicians to provide for customers nationwide and send others to work in neighbouring countries.

The company has invested in building its brand in the region to win over their local markets. It has spent Bt600,000 to Bt700,000 a month to rent the most famous building in Vietnam located near the Louis Vuitton shop, and about Bt80 million to renovate the building.

” we want to be the number-one player of this business in this region. It would waste our time, if we could not be the number one,” he added.

What Jennifer Aniston Should Pack for Her Honeymoon –First-Class Travel Tips to Make Everyone Feel Like an A-List Celebrity

PR Web

Westwood, MA (PRWEB) August 19, 2012

Jen is engaged! Finally, after being divorced from husband Brad Pitt, Jennifer Aniston has found true love with actor and screenwriter Justin Theroux, who proposed to her last week, on June 10th, 2012. the wedding planning is in the works, and probably, so is the honeymoon. Debbi Kickham, a professional travel journalist and author of the bestselling travel book, the Globetrotter’s Get-Gorgeous Guide – the world’s first beauty book for traveling women – offers these off-the-radar travel tips to make Jennifer’s – and every bride’s honeymoon — a breeze! (http://www.GorgeousGlobetrotter.com)

You should always travel with aspirin, Pepto-Bismol, multivitamins and your yoga mat – but here below are some unusual travel items, whose presence in your TravelPro suitcase will make any bon voyage even better.

1). Oscillococcinum. in France, where Oscillo has been around for more than 65 years, it is the best-selling over-the-counter product in the cold/flu/cough category and a top-selling brand in pharmacies. it won’t interact with other medications and is not contra-indicated with pre-existing conditions. Take it the moment you feel run-down after traveling, with any headache, body aches, chills or fever. Oscillo helps to reduce the duration and severity of flu symptoms and – get this – is an industry secret found on many Hollywood movie sets. That’s probably why movie stars always look so good!http://www.boironusa.com

2). Satin pillowcase. Broadcaster Joan Lunden has been doing this for years. When you get to your hotel or cruise ship stateroom, put a satin pillowcase over the bed pillow. Why? because satin is softer on your skin and hair than cotton, and doesn’t cause creases and wrinkles. You’ll feel like you’re sleeping at the four Seasons in Bora Bora – even if you’re at Motel 6 in Newark.

3). Ear plugs/eyeshades/blanket. If you can’t afford a private jet — this is the Trifecta for your flight to your destination. the ear plugs will drown out any noise (as will Bose noise-reducing headphones). the eyeshades will let you sleep during daylight. and a blanket will keep you warm when you’re at 35,000 feet.

4). Herban Essentials. these are moist towelettes you’ll find at whole Foods, and they smell divine, because they’re fragranced with real essential oils. they will uplift your spirits and send your olfactory senses into overdrive. Pack ‘em in your purse, suitcase, backpack, briefcase, car, gym bag and wallet. they come in lemon, orange, lavender, peppermint and eucalyptus. by all means use then on the plane to disinfect your surroundings (including the tray table). but Herban Essentials have tons of uses. use the lavender to tuck into your pillow at night, to induce sleep, or to relieve bug bites and remove makeup. use the lemon as an aftershave on your legs, use it to clean your computer keyboard, or as a pick-me-up after exercising. Peppermint can relieve motion sickness and combat mental fatigue. http://www.herbanessentials.com.

5). Filled RX for antibiotics. Talk to your primary care physician before you travel, and get a filled prescription for antibiotics. it can save your life on your trip, when the last thing you want to do is search for – and pay through the nose for — a local doctor. just exercise caution if and when you use antibiotics, and only use them for a severe infection.

6). Arnicare Gel. After being stuck in an uncomfortable seat on a plane, most people are achy and stiff and filled with muscle pain. Arnicare, made from the Latin daisy, is a safe, natural and reliable choice that is unscented and non-greasy, to relieve muscle pain and stiffness. (It’s also a “secret weapon” to minimize bruising and swelling after facial plastic surgery!) http://www.arnicare.com.

7). Superb lowfat snacks. Jen and all honeymooning brides should bring special low-cal snacks so they don’t fall off the diet wagon, and maintain their gorgeous model-like figures. these include: Sunsweet cherry-essence dried prunes, which at 20 calories per plum, are filled with antioxidants and put a tiger in your tank – especially before you go to the gym and need some fuel. For the breakfast of champions – pack puffed rice, raisins, and powdered milk. just store it all into a Ziploc bag. Simply add water, in a bowl from room service, and you have breakfast or a great snack. a cup of puffed rice is 70 calories; one-third cup of raisins is 130 calories, and half a cup of skim milk is 40 calories. Voila! For 240 calories, you are a dieting dynamo. I also always travel with Blue Diamond smokehouse almonds – 14 nuts have just 85 calories and a paltry 8 grams of fat – they are filled with protein, and you won’t need to pray anymore to St. Cellulita, the patron saint of thin thighs.

8). Emergen-C. these potent packets of Vitamin C pack a punch and are also loved by celebrities. For example, try a Super Energy Booster with 1,000 mg. of Vitamin C in an orange fizzy drink – it will come in handy after a flight when you feel depleted. Most packets have about 30 calories but there are also Lite versions that only have 5 calories per serving. http://www.alacercorp.com

9). anything from Venus Fashions. here is fashion’s best-kept secret, and some of the most beautiful resort wear – Venus Fashions. Forget shopping at T.J. Maxx, H&M or Zara; Venus makes make an incredible array of extremely affordable, made-in-America clothing that also offers the best customer service in the business. You’ll find everything from beautiful dresses, to dressy short shorts – all the rage now – to fantastic resort and cruise wear and sexy swimsuits in every style, size and color under the sun. (Venus invented the mix-and-match bathing suit). Venus will make every woman look like Aphrodite – or just an A-list celebrity. http://www.venus.com.

Upside to Having Zirconium Dental Implants

A perfectly aligned set of white, healthy and beautiful teeth is essential to looking your best and boosting your self-confidence. Some people are blessed naturally with straight and sparkling teeth but who aren’t lucky enough to have two lines of pearly whites can still flash a fabulous smile with the help of dental implants.

Unlike removable dentures, dental implants never slip or make embarrassing sounds. As well, they look and feel like natural teeth and serve as long-term replacements. Composed of titanium metal that fuses with your jawbone, dental implants preserve the health and function of the jaw.

Titanium implants are the most extensively used teeth restorations in the field of dental implantology today, thanks to their impressive success rate i.e. 98% for lower implants and 91% for upper implants.

However, recently, non-metallic material implants have been introduced to replace a tooth or several missing teeth. the new form of teeth implants, called zirconium dental implants, offers a potentially more precision, strength, and aesthetic appeal than traditional titanium implants.

Overview of Zirconia

A clear definition of zirconia is needed when looking into zirconium dental implants. Zirconium dioxide (ZrO2), commonly known as zirconia or simply white steel, was discovered back in 1789 by the German chemist M. H. Klaproth. Today, zirconia is extensively used in automotive and aircraft industry because it is extremely resistant to heat and corrosion. This so-called ‘wonder material’ possesses some remarkable properties such as high bending strength, hardness and weibull modulus.

Thanks to its extraordinary properties, including its high fracture toughness and chemical resistance, zirconia-based ceramics have long been preferred for fabrication of lab equipment and a variety of medical applications, including hip replacements, dental crowns and bridges, to name a few.

Zirconia-based Implants

Also referred to as ceramic implants, the metal-free zirconium dental implants have today become a viable alternative to standard titanium teeth restorations. People who have sensitivity allergic reactions to metallic implants, can go for zirconium dental implants that are completely metal free.

The fake dental roots are made of special ceramic (Zirconium oxide) which is highly resistant to corrosion, fracture and heat.

Benefits

As zirconia is naturally white, the crowns and bridges made of it are very clear and are extremely similar to the condition of natural teeth and tooth roots.

Unlike the metal crowns, zirconium dental implants allow the light to pass as a normal tooth.

As far as the strength of these implants goes, they are highly stable, and are strong enough to endure wear and tear of everyday use. They are capable of lasting for a lifetime.

Due to their rough surface texture, these implants have excellent biological compatibility and are very well tolerated by the gingiva.

The implants bond exceedingly well with the jaw bone and are tolerated by the gums.

Zirconium dental implants have been approved by the FDA, German and other European Governing Boards.

These are completely metal-free implants, attracting patients with allergies or those who just do not want any metal replacements for their missing teeth.

Zirconium dental implants retain less plaque and calculus, and are virtually free of adverse concerns like metal sensitivity, inflammation, metal corrosion and physical fatigue, giving you healthier gums and improved overall health.

Zirconium based implants are definitely an ideal option for people who want to replace their damaged or missing teeth with metal-free restorations. But, as with any surgical procedure, these implants too come with some risks and problems.

Radioactivity is one of the main risks associated with Zirconia dental implants. the radioactive isotopes found in zirconium can build up inside a muffle and lead to an increased chance of various oral cancers.

America’s obsession with unattainable beauty

David Hume said beauty is based on perception, while Aristotle told the masses it’s what gets your foot in the door. Advertisements tell us it’s a key factor in success, and mothers believe it’s the manifestation of their child.

but according to Vivian Miller, who holds a doctorate in plastic surgery, close to 13 million cosmetic procedures were performed this year in the U.S. alone. this staggering number shows a 155 percent increase over the past decade. Clearly, the idea of beauty no longer exists. Instead, it has been sliced and diced into an unattainable state of perfection and every flaw has been turned into another reason for change.

The issue with plastic surgery can be sliced by two sides of the scalpel. The first grants an opportunity for patients to improve themselves beyond their own means. It’s a chance to boost confidence and a chance for solace in a world of disfigurement.

in opposition, these procedures of change represent a shallow cultural trend that illuminates manipulated standards of perfection. The quest to be free of flaws downplays the importance of individuality and destroys the efforts of a wholesome womb. The list of procedures extends far beyond tummy tucks and breast implants. Cosmetic enhancement can be shaped around chemical face peels, laser hair removal, rhinoplasties and other minute or significant alterations. according to WebMD, the most popular procedures in 2012 were liposuction and eyelid surgery. just like the vast array of temporal improvements, the psychological reasons behind wanting augmentation vary from patient to patient. according to the National Institute of Health, “People generally seek cosmetic interventions to feel better about themselves.” this means after the skin is ripped open and imperfections removed, a more positive sense of self emerges along with a new caliber of social confidence.

in a best case scenario, receiving plastic surgery could help reduce the distress of being physically different from natural competitors. By limiting the tension of being different, the recipient is able to transcend the worries of a physical prison and immerse themselves in a refined state of development. “People who get it feel better about themselves, doctors feel happy when they get paid. It’s a silly, misguided custom that says a lot about our society,” said DePaul senior Jonathan Lidsky. a saline breast implants runs at about $4,500, and a rhinoplasty is double that. Some people undergo multiple procedures a year and when dissatisfaction is the only result, a problem consequently arises.

unless the surgery was totally botched, responding poorly to a cosmetic procedure is considered a psychiatric problem known as body dysmorphic disorder. People engage in this negative pattern of thinking and often obsess for hours at a time about a minuscule defect that has no real impact on their lives. this could be everything from several unsightly freckles to an invisible roll of fat.

The National Institute of Health said people like that, “Check their appearance repeatedly, pick their skin and try to conceal their defect through use of concealing clothing, wigs, makeup, hats and so on.” People who represent this behavior are categorized with mismatched levels of serotonin and underlying mood or personality disorders. Those suffering from body dysmorphic disorder have even been known to lash out towards their surgeons. in order to avoid the disheartening effects of a negative surgical experience, the individual’s attitude should be evaluated. Diller urges other plastic surgeons to assess the patient’s history prior to signing a dotted line. in doing so, the doctor will be able to identity how the procedure will help or hinder them in physical and emotional realms. Those dealing with psychotropic medications, eating disorders or substance abuse or drug addictions are often ruled out automatically based on a preliminary screening.
