Little Mermaid surgery ad gives Ariel breast implants

Little Mermaid surgery – that’s what you call it when Ursula magically gives Ariel her legs, right? wrong.

A Venezuelan plastic surgery center has launched an ad campaign that features several fairy tale characters, including the Frog Prince, the Little Mermaid, and a witch à la The Wizard of Oz, going under the knife. It’s not just the legs, either. In the Little Mermaid surgery ad, Ariel appears to have augmented breasts and sports a sexy smile above the tagline, “We make fairy tales come true.”

The full ad depicts Ariel escaping Ursula’s clutches only to find herself on a gurney, fish tail drooping over the side as plastic surgeons bend over her partially obscured upper body. The International Business Times reports that the ad “sparked controversy” – no kidding – after it started to appear on Buzzfeed’s Copyranter. Disney princesses have been criticized before for portraying unrealistic feminine ideals, setting up young girls to have a warped sense of body image. Commenters across the Web shared their concerns that the last thing girls need to see is an ad giving the Little Mermaid surgery.

“This is pretty disgusting,” one commenter posted on the Huffington Post. “Little girls actually look up to these cartoon characters. so, what they are saying is: ‘Hey, little girl, you are not good enough for this world with small normal boobs, so get big plastic ones and people will love you.’”

Twitter users also shared their remorse. “This Little Mermaid Surgery ad has ruined my childhood and my favorite princess!!! :’( #Why,” posted one user.

The website SheKnows points out that the ad is “a lawuit waiting to happen.” it remains to be seen what actions Disney will take regarding the Little Mermaid surgery image.

Cosmetic surgery a multimillion-dollar business in Thailand

A drastic change in the public’s perception of cosmetic surgery over the past 10 years has created a huge demand among Thai consumers, who contribute most of the 20 billion baht (US$634 million) in income that surgery clinics enjoy each year.

Ten years ago, both surgeons and customers sneaked into backrooms in hospitals and beauty clinics for the operations. now, clinics have mushroomed in all parts of the country as consumers welcome the idea of how a tiny appearance change can lead to greater beauty.

A recent survey shows that market value of the cosmetic surgery business has increased from 15 billion baht in 2010 to 20 billion baht in 2011. and this year, the value of this industry is expected to increase by another 20 per cent.

Meanwhile, the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce’s Centre for Economic and Business Forecasting estimates that cosmetic surgery will be the most popular business among investors this year as more and more teenagers want to undergo the surgery.

Records from the Public Health Ministry’s Health Service Support Department showed that the number of cosmetic surgery clinics registered with the department has increased from 317 clinics in 2004 to 350 this year.

“The world has changed,” Dr Supot Sumritvanitcha, a director of Yanhee International Hospital, told the Nation in an exclusive interview.

“Every girl wants to be a super-star like Patchrapa Aum Chaichua who is being spotlighted everywhere,” he added.

In the past, people would feel significantly bad and embarrassed if their friends or relatives had known they’d been to cosmetic surgery clinics. Thai society, at that time, had strong feelings against plastic or cosmetic surgery and stigmatized those people who’d had surgery as being unhappy with their genetic heritage.

“Sometimes, people would lie to their friends or relatives about traveling abroad for vacation for two weeks – but in fact, they went to Hong Kong or Japan to undergo cosmetic surgery. when they came home [they were] more beautiful,” Supot said.

But now, appearance and personality have become more and more important for people to find opportunities and their dream job.

Some parents have taken their kids to undergo cosmetic surgery at the age of 15 to pave the way for their success or to enter the entertainment industry.

Nose and eyelid surgery is the most popular among teenagers. Supot said 500 teenagers aged over 18 had visited hospital every month to undergo nose surgery and about 450 patients had undergone eyelid surgery.

Not only the number of domestic patients had increased during the past few years, the number of foreign patients had increased as well.

According to the hospital’s records, the number of foreign patients had increased from 25,611 cases in 2008 to 34,440 cases in 2010.

They are from many parts of the world such as US, Canada, Mexico, the UK, Germany, France, Netherlands, Italy, Russia, Ukraine, China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, United Arab Emirates, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Israel, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam, Singapore, Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan.

“For Western customers, many underwent nose and breast reduction surgery, and mid-facial lift,” Supot said.

Yanhee Polyclinic was opened in 1984 in a 2-block 4-story building near the Rama 6 Bridge in Bangkok to provide medical services including weight control, general medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, intensive care, and dialysis.

Following the rise inpatients, Yanhee had opened a 10-story, 40- bed capacity hospital building on ten rai which became the Yanhee International Hospital in 1997.

Now the hospital has opened 36 treatment centers to provide general medicine and a wide range of cosmetic and plastic surgery services such as breast augmentation, facelift, tummy-tuck, liposuction, botox injection, dental whitening, facial treatment, and hair transplant.

The hospital recently opened a vaginal repair centre to restore the anatomic arrangement of structures surrounding the vaginal wall. this centre had attracted a lot of attention from customers aged between 18 and 60. At least five patients aged over 40 undergo vaginal repair surgery per day.

Supot expects the hospital will earn 3 million baht a month as revenue from this centre.

“We want to be an aesthetic institute which provides a one-stop shop for beauty,” he said.

To prepare for the ASEAN Economic Community in 2015, Yanhee has invested over 1 billion baht to build two new buildings and purchase new medical devices.

The hospital has planned to increase its full-time surgeons from 130 to 150 and increase the part-time surgeons from 120 to 125.

It will increase the number of professional nurses from 500 to 700 and import nurses from the Philippines to work as assistants as they can communicate well in English with foreign patients.

Apart from Yanhee International Hospital, the Wuttisak Clinic group also plans to join in the competition by increasing its skincare clinics in local and foreign markets.

The company now has 109 skincare clinics across the country with more planned. the company will also expand into Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Myanmar, Malaysia and Indonesia.

At least 20 skincare clinics are marked for Vietnam next year, with four clinics located in Cambodia and four more to be set up in Laos, he added.

“We know everyone wants to be more beautiful so we’ll change the public perception of beauty. We’ll help people think [it's] doctors who make them more beautiful and not a cosmetic product,” Wuttisak Clinic’s chief executive officer Nakorn Kornherun said.

Because of the rising demand in skincare treatment, the company has employed 200 general physicians to provide for customers nationwide and send others to work in neighboring countries.

The company has invested in building its brand in the region to win over their local markets. it has spent 600,000 to 700,000 baht a month to rent the most famous building in Vietnam located near the Louis Vuitton shop, and about 80 million baht to renovate the building.

“We want to be the number-one player of this business in this region. it would waste our time, if we could not be the number one,” he added.

14-year-old girl turns to plastic surgery after years of bullying

High school freshman Nadia Ilse changed her ears, chin and nose as a result of bullying

Nadia Ilse recently underwent plastic surgery to her ears, chin and nose after being made fun of for the way she looked.

Before her freshman year of high school, Nadia and her mother sought help from the Little Baby Face Foundation who performs surgeries for children who have physical deformities. Her mother claims, in a Good Morning America interview, that these surgeries are no different than “somebody having teeth that require braces.”

Nadia tells reporter, “They called me ‘Dumbo,’ ‘elephant ears.’” She goes on to explain that she often cried herself to sleep and even considered suicide.

Now, about to enter high school as a freshman, she says in a CNN interview, “I look beautiful, this is exactly what I wanted, I love it.”

As part of her therapy, Nadia will start psychological counseling to help remedy the years of verbal abuse she endured.

Since Nadia sought aid from the Little Baby Face Foundation, her surgeries, totaling to approximately $40,000 dollars, was free of charge for the Ilse family because her appearance was considered a hindrance to her daily life.

Norwich plastic surgeon Rozina Ali: ‘A happy person will always look good’

Rozina Ali at the Sainsbury Centre in Norwich. Photo: bill Smith

Rozina Ali is one of the country’s top surgeons specialising in breast, reconstructive and cosmetic surgery. Reporter DAVID BALE went to meet her.

Top plastic surgeon Rozina Ali can always spot her own work.

“Surgeons are creative people, and we’re all very distinctive,” she said.

She likens her work to fine art, in that once you know the basics, you can begin to elaborate.

But she said she never gets complacent about surgery.

“You get comfortable and familiar with what you do and you learn tips, tricks and short cuts, but I also have enormous respect for nature. There’s no fooling biology.”

She has particularly strong feelings about aesthetics as well as function and how each surgical outcome should exactly suit each patient.

I asked her if she ever looked at celebrities and thought they had had bad plastic surgery, or that they needed some work doing, but she said she doesn’t want to ever look at people that way.

“Some people look odd, just because that’s the way they are, not because they’ve had plastic surgery,” she said.

“Lots of people I know, including friends or family might ask for advice or treatments, but I always tell them to come along to my office. I don’t like to mix professional with personal. I enjoy formal boundaries.”

On being asked directly, she was startled but said she was fine with the way she looked.

“I’m happy with it. I’m perfectly happy having dark hair, being dark-skinned, having dark eyes. I’m not particularly tall or buxom, but I’m fit and healthy.

“I believe in people optimising themselves. the way you look is about your lifestyle, your outlook, the balance in your days.

“If you are a happy person and have a good outlook, you will look good. if you are discontented it invariably shows on your face.

“You have to have a balance in your life. the ultimate luxury is to have people feel comfortable in their own skins.

“The three main things are contentment, fulfilment and joy – if you can find that in your life, that’s the ultimate balance.

”True beauty is about happiness and health, which are very much the attributes that are admired in the far East. in the West we tend to pursue externals and superficials, at the expense of internals. often in my consultations, the best I can offer is to empower people and tell them what they need to inspire them.”

Millions of people will have seen Dr Ali on BBC2’s Horizon series ‘The Truth about looking Young’ last month. on the programme she left the operating theatre behind for the frontiers of skin science and asked if it is possible to make your skin look younger without surgery.

Feedback from the show has been very positive.

She has been based at the Norfolk and Norwich University hospital for exactly five years now.

She’s a full-time plastic surgery consultant, specialising in micro-vascular reconstructive surgery, which involves moving tissue from one part of the body, such as the legs, stomach and bottom, to another, ie. disconnecting tissue from its blood supply then reconnecting it in a different place.

She performs ‘perforator’ flap surgery, which has only been on the radar for about 10 years and she’s been in it on from the start. She was one of only three people from the UK to attend the inaugural world society of reconstructive microsurgery conference in 2001.

She can not say how many operations she does on average in a week, as it varies.

She did one operation that lasted 10 hours one day last week, while others are far simpler and she may perform up to six cases in a day.

Raised in Liverpool, she still has some traces of a Scouse accent, which appears, she says, when she’s feeling too relaxed. when she was 16 she moved to London, and before coming to Norwich, she did fellowships around the world including Belgium and Taiwan, learning her trade.

She loves Norwich and the area, even though she said she was very much a city girl at heart.

“I love the peace and serenity here. I still slow down when I see rabbits. I like greenery and the visual beauty. It does not cost a penny to look at beautiful things.

“I love natural beauty and beautiful art. in my house I have pieces by Damien Hirst, Anthony Benjamin, Maxine Angus and Hugh Brandon-Cox. I like collecting beautiful works of art. I was in new York last summer and I was befriended by Rene Ricard, an eccentric and gifted artist who was one of Andy Warhol’s contemporaries.”

She knew that she wanted to be a surgeon from an early age, although no-one in her working class family was a doctor.

She’s a fanatical Liverpool supporter. “King Kenny should never have gone,” she said. “Being a football fan is like belonging to a tribe.”

In her spare time she enjoys gardening, and makes time to smell the roses every day. She also loves keeping fit… jogging and roller-skating around the local streets and parks. She loves travel, especially to the far East and South America.

“I love the far East – the humidity, the air. I have been skiing in Japan. I like being a stranger in a foreign land.”

Just hours after we met at the Sainsbury Centre at the UEA, which is one of her favourite places, she was due to be performing surgery. although not worried about it, she recognises just how important each operation is to the patient and treats everyone as she would want to be treated – with honesty and with warmth.

Government seeks views on cosmetic surgery

A “major cosmetic surgery review” has been launched, The Daily Telegraph has reported. it added that the industry faces “tough new regulations over fears that patients are being misled over the safety of procedures”.

The news – picked up in most of the print, broadcast and online media – is based on a government announcement of a “call for evidence” as part of an ongoing review of cosmetic surgery and other cosmetic procedures. Professor Sir Bruce Keogh, NHS medical director, is leading the review.

The government announcement was accompanied by an opinion poll of 1,762 people which found that only half took into account the qualifications of the person treating them when deciding on cosmetic surgery. Those polled also said they were less likely to have cosmetic surgery following the news about PIP implants.

A team of surgeons, physicians, campaigners and journalists are helping Professor Keogh to gather evidence and make recommendations to the government. The review is considering:

  • regulation and safety of products used in cosmetic procedures
  • regulation of the skills and qualifications of people who carry out procedures
  • how to ensure that organisations that do cosmetic procedures are able to look after their patients during their treatment and afterwards
  • what information and advice patients need to make an informed choice – including “time for reflection”
  • how to improve complaints processes so that complaints about cosmetic procedures are listened to and acted upon
  • the introduction of a national implant register, for products such as breast implants and other medical devices

The government wants the public to share their views on these issues and their experiences of the cosmetic surgery industry and cosmetic procedures.

The Department of Health says that the review is in response to concerns raised about the industry following problems with PIP breast implants. The review was set up in January 2012 as part of the government’s response to the emerging problems with the PIP implants. this new announcement highlights a call for evidence from the public.

Professor Keogh said: “The recent problems with PIP breast implants have shone a light on the cosmetic surgery industry.”

He continued: “I am concerned that too many people do not realise how serious cosmetic surgery is and do not consider the lifelong implications – and potential complications – it can have.

“We want to hear views from everyone, particularly people who have experience of the cosmetic surgery industry or of other cosmetic interventions – good and bad – so we can learn what works best.”

Professor Keogh’s review group is set to publish its conclusions by March 2013. However, any recommended changes to regulation of the cosmetic surgery industry are likely to take longer to come into effect, due to the need to consult with interested groups.

Texas Army Sgt. special guest at Eagles’ camp

Action News

August 1, 2012 (WPVI) — an Army Sergeant from Texas was at the Eagles training camp this week as Andy Reid’s special guest.

Two years ago, the sergeant was nearly killed outside Baghdad. He credits a letter from the Eagles coach with giving him the strength to fight through his injuries.

His story is one you won’t soon forget; a life-long Eagles fan, who never lived in Philadelphia, and a coach who took the time to send him some encouragement when he needed it the most.

“It surprised me a lot that a head coach on my favorite team would write me a letter,” said Sgt. Mike Thomas.

Sergeant 1st Class Mike Thomas says the Eagles have been his favorite team ever since he was a kid growing up in Fredericksburg, Virginia.

He now lives in San Antonio, Texas, and he has managed to attend at least one game a year for as long as he can remember.

In April of 2010, Sgt. Thomas was leading a convoy in Baghdad.

“When we got out, we started walking and checking out the place. that was the last thing I remember,” Sgt. Thomas said.

An IED explosion left Thomas critically injured. He underwent four brain surgeries and reconstructive plastic surgery.

His family reached out to the Eagles organization and received the letter from Reid the next month after Thomas emerged from a 20-day coma.

“It just meant everything to me,” said Sgt. Thomas.

“It was a humbling experience because it gave him a little inspiration during that tough time to kick in and continue to push himself,” said Eagles Head Coach Andy Reid.

As Thomas showed off his Brian Dawkins tattoo on his left arm and his tattoo of Veterans Stadium on the other side, the coach had nothing but praise for the recipient of his letter.

“He’s one of the guys protecting our country so we can do the things we do here,” Reid said.

Thomas says only one thing could make it better.

“You have to get on the road to the Super Bowl man, that’s it,” said Sgt. Thomas.

Sgt. Thomas still has some challenges to face. He suffered a seizure on the way to Lehigh this week, but he says whenever he is feeling dejected, he looks at his framed letter from the coach, and he remembers that Andy Reid told him not to give up.

That is something that he has promised himself he will never do.

A Quick Look at Dental Implants

A dental implant is essentially a replacement for roots of teeth. It is used to support a prosthetic tooth (or teeth) in place of missing ones. since it functions as an anchor for the tooth, it is necessary that the material used be compatible with and safe for the human body, especially to the bone to which it will attach. the current material of choice is titanium, a metal that is light yet strong.

Why would dental implants be needed?

Teeth play an important role in the human body. for the physical well-being of the body, teeth are needed to chew food as the first step in the process of digesting food. Teeth are also used in speech and communication, and the lack of them can impair proper speech production. also, for many people, teeth affect physical appearance, and gaps or absence of one or several teeth may have a negative psychological effect.

In view of the above reasons, dental implants are gaining an increasing popularity as a prosthetic device. In terms of appearances, they will certainly have the advantage over dentures or bridges, as they look most like a natural tooth. since implants are permanently attached, there is no risk of them causing embarrassment as, for instance, a denture that falls off at the most inopportune moment.

Who can have dental implants?

There are several considerations for anyone considering this. the primary consideration is the health of the person since surgery will be required. Any surgery carries with it risk, not just of infection, but any other complication that may arise from the procedure, or even after it. aside from the general health of the candidate, another thing to consider is his or her oral health. If there is any other tooth that is decayed or infected, this must be addressed before any surgery can be done. the person’s ability to maintain good oral hygiene after surgery is also a must. Perhaps the most important consideration is the quantity and quality of the bone that is present in the jaw. an implant is supposed to integrate into the jaw through the growth of bone tissue around it. Healthy bones are necessary for this.

How much do dental implants cost?

At the moment, the main issue is being able to have affordable dental implants. many people living in the Western Countries consider them expensive. although a number of clinics in these countries claim to provide cheap services, a more cost-effective alternative would be to consider having them done abroad. a search on the internet for a provider for low-cost dental implants will certainly turn up several suitable clinics from which one can choose. Countries such as Hungary and Poland in Europe, UK, and India and Philippines in Asia boast of cheaper medical and health services. this makes them more affordable with most clinics quoting prices well below prices in some of the most expensive countries in the world.

Jets coach Rex Ryan talks about losing 105 pounds

Rex Ryan still loves Mexican food.

Before, he’d eat as many as 12 tacos in one sitting. These days, it’s more like one.

The new York Jets coach with the big, boisterous personality never hid that he underwent weight-loss surgery in March 2010. normally happy to talk _ and talk _ about anything, Ryan was tight-lipped about the details for more than two years. he wanted to reach the milestone of shedding 100 pounds before he opened that famous mouth.

From a peak of 348 pounds, Ryan is now down to about 243.

Even Jets fans sometimes don’t recognize the new, slim Rex.

“I feel good because I know l look better than I did,” he said Thursday, before quickly adding in typical fashion, “which is not saying much.”

“But it wasn’t about that for me,” Ryan continued. “I’ve been married for 25 years. I wasn’t looking for the young girlfriend or whoever. … I wanted to be healthier and live a long, healthy life.”

At a high in his coaching career, he was also hitting a high on the scales. The Jets were about to face the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC championship game after the 2009 season when Ryan happened to weigh himself. he would get short of breath going up stairs but never expected to see the number that left him “mortified”: 348.

The 49-year-old Ryan thought a fellow coach was playing a trick on him, putting pressure on the scale while he stood on it.

“There was nobody there. it was just me,” Ryan said. “I was shocked. I thought I was about 300 to maybe 310.”

He had tried all sorts of diets in the past, losing lots of weight only to gain it all back _ and more. Ryan decided to have Lap-Band surgery after hearing the success stories of former players Jamie Dukes and Tony Siragusa.

The device makes him feel full after eating, say, that one taco, forcing him to practice portion control. Ryan acknowledged he didn’t necessarily eat much healthier _ just less.

“If I want pizza, instead of eating a whole pizza like I used to, I’ll eat a slice of pizza, if even that,” he said.

The device can be adjusted, so Ryan had it loosened a bit when he and his wife recently went to Paris for their 25th anniversary so he could fully sample the French cuisine.

After surgery, his weight loss had started to plateau when he started exercising, which melted away many more pounds. Ryan was at about 290 during last season.

At his heaviest, working out was just too hard on his joints. Now walking an hour on the treadmill feels like nothing, and he’s thinking of running for the first time in two decades.

His goal is to drop another 20 pounds or so. Ryan has gone from a 48- to a 38-inch waist, so he’s had to replace all his clothes except for his socks. his blood pressure and cholesterol have plummeted.

Without being asked, Ryan volunteers that he’s getting paid to serve as a spokesman for Lap-Band.

“My message is: do I believe in it? There’s no question, 100 percent,” he said.

So much so that he persuaded his twin brother, Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, to get the surgery too. Rob has lost about 60 pounds.

Ryan’s attitude often seemed inseparable from his girth, but he insists he’s the same old Rex _ just healthier. The Jets’ full training camp opens in Cortland, N.Y., next Thursday.

Ryan said he expected All-Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis to be there. Revis wants to rework his contract and hasn’t guaranteed he’ll report on time.

“If he’s not, then it’s my job to coach,” Ryan said.

Ryan repeated yet again that mark Sanchez would be his starting quarterback after the acquisition of Tim Tebow. Ryan also hopes to see new addition LaRon Landry on the field at the start of camp. The veteran safety is coming off injuries to his Achilles and heel.

“If he comes back and he’s healthy … that back end could really be special,” Ryan said.
