Business is looking good at Northborough medical spa

what we do to look young isn’t always pretty. And thanks to a youth-oriented society, we can become obsessed with it.

You can see the hype in any lifestyle magazine or tabloid TV show. The media is constantly distracting us from the realities of aging. Statements like "the 50s are the new 40s" and suggestions that we need an "age-defying" facial cream provoke feelings of inadequacy.

consequently, we question whether or not our looks measure up to society’s standards and expectations.

hence, that's why plastic surgeons are seen as the ideal remedy to turn back time.

that said, the profession isn’t just about "maintaining our salad days." Oftentimes, plastic surgery can be a miracle for those who suffer from severe physical and mental trauma as well as congenital disfigurement.

Just ask Dr. Cynthia Poulos, proprietor of Classique Medical Spa with offices in Northborough and Milford.

even though Poulos’ core business evolves around helping men and women prevent and treat the effects of aging, she also performs reconstructive surgery on people with severe body and facial wounds. these are usually caused by traumatic events, animal attacks or even congenital defects.

According to Poulos, every case is different.

"we do look at people individually," says Poulos. "Based upon the issue, simple problems seen by the customer may require more extensive procedures and vise versa. It's not cookie cutter by any means."

her business offers comprehensive treatments that touch practically every part of the human anatomy. Procedures include laser liposuction, peels, wrinkle relaxers and breast augmentations.

And with a wide range of services comes a wide range in prices, too.

Poulos says, "You can spend about $250 on treating an area with Botox-like injections, a filler or laser treatment or you can spend roughly $10,000 for a full facial rejuvenation or a circumferential body lift." says Poulos.

despite the fact that plastic surgery is considered elective regardless of price, consumers oftentimes discount its legitimacy.

"I am first and foremost a physician and we are first and foremost a medical practice even though we offer products that are consumer-based and not medically based," says Poulos.

this medical practice has become a must for many actors and actresses. Many are obsessed with their appearance and frequent plastic surgeons for Botox injections, breast augmentations and face-lifts all in the name of maintaining their social and professional relevance.

Many are obsessed with their appearance and frequent plastic surgeons for Botox injections, breast augmentations and face-lifts all in the name of maintaining their social and professional relevance. this mentality is a markedly different mind-set from that of New Englanders. "Conservative natural results are the keys to working in New England," says Poulos. "a lot of surgeons are creatures of habit. Since we offer a comprehensive level of service, we are always looking for new technologies and new techniques." one of Poulos’s newest technologies is Cellulaze, a laser-based treatment that is applied where cellulite forms on the anatomy. "(Cellulaze) will probably move into the top-five treatments," says Poulos. "Right now, Botox and wrinkle fillers are the top two non-invasive treatments while the top two overall are breast implant surgery and liposuction." Cellulaze is a good example of how Poulos is always finding ways to hone her talent, which is indicative of how the business got its name. in Classique’s office lobby hangs a painting of classic Greek imagery. The artwork depicts an intimate moment between a man and a woman where only their perfectly proportioned heads are partially exposed. his head is leaning toward hers and it appears as if she is about to kiss his forehead just above the left eye. "it really speaks to my background and to what I do," says Poulos. "it comes down to the classic proportion of beauty." Poulos, 53, grew up in Teaneck, N.J., where she first realized just how much she enjoyed working with her hands. during her youth, Poulos often spent her days watching her father, Christopher Poulos, complete numerous home repairs. "My dad was good at fixing things," says Poulos. "if my mother wanted something fixed, he would fix it and if that meant someone was working, we were all working. he (also) said, ‘if you want to do the right job, you have to use the right tool.’" Along with helping her father, Poulos says other career influences include arts and crafts in grade school and "Ben Casey," a 1960s television show about a passionate, yet idealistic, doctor. in 1981, Poulos followed in Casey’s footsteps and began medical school at State University of New York, Stony Brook. She attributes this experience to ultimately choosing a career in plastic surgery. "I was considering general surgery, however, during this time I was exposed to plastic surgery in a concentrated fashion," says Poulos. "The doctor I was working with showed me just how many aspects there were to the field. it solidified my ultimate decision." From 1985 to 1994, Poulos completed two residency programs; one as a general surgery resident at the Hospital of St. Raphael in New Haven, Conn., the other, a plastic surgery residency at Worcester’s UMass Medical Center. by 1994, Poulos had finished school was ready to start her own practice. that said, rather than launch her business organically, she knew buying another business with an established client base was a better way to go. Coincidentally, that same year, she met Dr. Judith Petry who was practicing reconstructive surgery out of Marlborough and in the process of retiring. Since Petry had more than 35 years of industry experience, she had a litany of active patients. Poulos saw Petry’s practice as an ideal opportunity to stay close to her hometown, Shrewsbury, and have a sold client base to build on as well as expand her services. however, according to Poulos, Petry wasn't interested in transitioning her operation to just anybody. for Petry, she wanted to ensure that the new owner treated her patients with the same quality care as she provided. Seeing Poulos isn't the kind to cut and run, so to speak, Petry and Poulos spent six months working together so Petry could properly transition her practice, patients and referring physicians to Poulos. "it was an opportunity to grow a medical practice and (conduct) other kinds of surgery," says Poulos. "I was also buying goodwill." in 2000, not long after Petry and Poulos went their own ways, Poulos opened Classique Medical Spa, and Ella Silvestri of Berlin has been a patient since day one. Silvestri, 49, sought a doctor to fix her ears. She spent many years wearing long earrings and, consequently, they pulled right through her earlobes. while most people learn of doctors through referrals from friends and family, Silvestri used the phone book. So when she saw Poulos' photograph in Classique’s advertisement, Poulos got the call. "we have this long relationship because (Dr. Poulos) is hip, lively and up on the latest technologies," says Silvestri, "(Dr. Poulos) consults are based on her clients' needs and not her pocketbook. She takes her time, explains everything in detail and gives an honest, honest, honest opinion." Loyal patients are what allow Poulos to afford technologies such as the Peak Plasma Blade, which the spa began offering last month. The Blade is predominantly used for select surgeries such as eyelifts and breast reduction. The machine helps the physician to control the scalpel meticulously and make an exact incision. Beyond a perfect cut, the chances of blood trauma are reduced, as is any collateral damage around the local area, according to Poulos. "You have to separate the skin from the underlying tissues," says Poulos. "The temperature of a standard cautery may heat up to 200-degrees centigrade while the plasma blade’s operating temperature can go as low as 40-degrees centigrade." Poulos feels that the Blade is the kind of technology that potential patients need to know about. So she regularly holds open houses where consumers can familiarize themselves with her business. these events also give Poulos a platform to have demonstrations showing fillers and Botox injections on office staff. "it gives people a chance to meet us and see what we do," says Poulos. "It's about getting their feet wet in a casual, yet professional, atmosphere." in this day and age, health care coverage is a hot topic. thus, during open houses, the issue is raised frequently. Poulos says, "From what I understand, procedures that are medically indicated are covered by insurance. But I always tell clients it's best to call their insurance company first before committing to any procedure." Classique Medical Spa is at 17 South St., Northborough, and 14 Prospect St., Milford. Its website is www.drpoulos.com.

Did Rihanna Get a Nose Job? « Celebrity Plastic Surgery

Stunning, green-eyed songstress Rihanna hails from sunny Barbados, and she’s one of that country’s most famous exports. Today, Rihanna, whose sexy, sultry style has electrified a generation, is also a spokesmodel for Cover Girl cosmetics. in fact, Rihanna has become one of the world’s beauty and fashion icons, as she knows exactly how to play up her gorgeous skin, eyes, body and bone structure with the riskiest, edgiest outfits, hairstyles, makeup looks and accessories. However, according to celebrity plastic surgery rumors, Rihanna may have gotten a little help to look as good as she does. Most plastic surgery rumors about this Caribbean beauty are centered on an alleged nose job (also known as a rhinoplasty).

If Rihanna did go under the knife to refine her nose, she certainly wouldn’t be the first music star to do it. while the common perception is that singers can’t have nose jobs, because it would affect their voices, many pop stars and songstresses do in fact undergo rhinoplasties to look more attractive and appealing to their fans. Usually, aspiring stars will get these nose jobs early on in their careers, before they are very well known, because it’s easier to escape scrutiny over their plastic surgery during that phase. Then, by the time that they are ready to launch their first album, they’ve perfected their appearance to catch the attention of millions of fans.

In fact, it’s commonly believed that young singers are directed towards plastic surgery by record company executives and other VIPs who know exactly what the general public wants from their recording artists. The music matters, but image is everything…

Rihanna was Always Gorgeous

As you can see in the before photo (shown above), Rihanna was always drop-dead gorgeous. Blessed with the most beautiful caramel skin tone, almond-shaped, jade-green eyes, high cheekbones, and full lips, she needed little help to become the face of the decade. However, her nose used to be a little bit broad in the tip. Now, after her alleged celebrity plastic surgery, Rihanna has a more delicate nose, although it is quite a subtle example of very natural-looking rhinoplasty. As you can also see in the pictures above, Rihanna also appears to be sporting a pair of large, round breast implants, which differ radically from her before photo.

Celebrities (or celebrities-in-the-making) have access to resources that allow them to become their best selves. However, these plastic surgery services are not out of reach to typical people who aren’t rich and renowned. if you want the Rihanna look, you can get it from a board-certified plastic surgeon. Typically, breast implants will cost about seven thousand dollars, and a rhinoplasty (nose job) will cost nine thousand dollars and up. Financing is available to make the cost of cosmetic surgery more manageable.

Microdermabrasion: How Does It Work And What Are Its Benefits?

Microdermabrasion is the latest treatment which has made its way from Hollywood to the public. most people consider the treatment as one of the most efficient technology for beautification of the skin. In people’s day-to-day living, we tend to imagine how we look and how presentable we are from the eyes of other people. A few wrinkles might cause a person to become timid. In other words, physical looks have an enormous impact on one’s confidence.

In order to make sure the smoothness and the younger appearance of the skin over the face, neck, hands, and arms, people would try many treatments such as plastic surgery, injection of Botox, and chemical peels. Aside from being expensive, these treatments have more undesirable effects to the skin in the future. the best choice that experts would suggest is the Microdermabrasion; however, how does it work?

How Microdermabrasion Works?

There are two layers that skin has: the epidermis and the dermis. the upper layer, which is the epidermis, is a set of dead skin cells above the dermis which is the layer of premature skin cells. the epidermis includes the outer skin that we see and skin deficiencies are typical in this skin layer. Longer skin deficiencies such as scars go through the epidermis down to the dermis while others only occur in the epidermis. In other words, all goals of skin treatment are to remove the dead skin cells and allow the dermis generate a new set of epidermis.

The Microdermabrasion treatment has the same goal in mind. It targets the epidermis and removes them in order for the dermis to revitalize the outer layer. In this way, the skin will look younger, smoother, and healthier. the treatment works with crystals. the crystals will penetrate the epidermis and pull out all the dead skin cells so that the dermis layer will be able to do its job. In professional treatment, they use a metallic or a plastic wand to shoot and vacuum the crystals. on the other hand, home-treatment for Microdermabrasion does the same thing only without the device to shoot and vacuum the crystal. Home treatment is a set of creams and solutions with crystals as their ingredient. when people began to use the cream on their skin, the crystals will collect the dead skin cells and bring these cells once wash. In other words, the secret of this treatment lies on the crystals that do the magic.

What are the Benefits?

The main benefit of the treatment is with regards to skin flaws such as many signs of aging, acne, dark spots, and so on. Because the treatment will remove the dead skin cells, younger and healthier new skin cells will replace them in a remarkably short time. this will give people with smooth, radiant, and beautiful skin. the treatment goes together with accompanying creams to help the dermis in producing skin cells quickly. In addition, regular treatment of Microdermabrasion may lead to fewer skin flaws in the future.

Trista Sutter Has New Boobs, And She’s Proud Of Them

Trista Sutter, best known for finding love on “the Bachelorette” in 2003, decided to have plastic surgery recently to lift her breasts and fix a droopy eyelid, and she’s showing off her new body in a recent issue of Life & Style Magazine.

“After nursing both my kids for a year each, my boobs were deflated. and I had a droopy eye. it was something that I noticed in every picture I’ve ever taken,” she said.

Sutter, who is still with husband Ryan–whom she met on the show–says she needed to have the surgery in order to feel better about herself, and that Ryan was very supportive of her decision. So she underwent a blepharoplasty–a procedure to lift both eyelids–and a breast lift and augmentation which added a cup size.

“I realized that the surgery was something I had to do for myself, just for my own self-confidence and to feel good again about being in bathing suits and being intimate with my husband…I wanted to feel pretty again — and I do!” the reality star said.

As The German Economy Caves, Eurozone Bailouts Take On New Dimensions

Last year, German exports rode to a new record, jobs were being created in massive numbers, real wages rose, housing and real estate boomed, the federal budget was nearly balanced, and consumers felt good and spent money—despite the havoc that the Eurozone debt crisis has been wreaking.

Whatever was happening, Germany would be able to make up for declining exports to the Eurozone with strong exports to Asia and the US. Internal demand would remain solid.

And this illusion of durable economic strength and fiscal virtue has tainted the discussion about saving the euro, bailing out debt-sinner countries in return for austerity measures, and keeping the European Central Bank in check.

But now the crisis has moved from Germany’s front yard to its doorstep and is about to enter its living room.

Beer sales, for example. that the German Federal Statistical Office tracks them shows just how crucial a staple beer is. Alas, beer sales to customers in Germany dropped 2.3% in the first half over the same period last year, and ominously, exports dropped 2.9% [for the worldwide beer phenomenon, beer consumption per capita, and where the growth really is, read.... Beer, A Reflection of the World Economy?]

Auto sales got clobbered in July, dropping by 5% from July last year, and by 16.5% from June, knocking year-to-date sales, which had been holding up well, into the red (-0.1%). Auto sales have been a fiasco in the Eurozone for a while. In Greece, where they’d been plummeting for years, they plummeted again in the first half, by 41.3%! In Italy, by 19.7%, in France by 14.4%, in Belgium by 12.7%. But until July, Germany had been spared. No more. of the big brands, only Audi (Volkswagen) was up (+14.3%). the others got hammered: Opel (GM) -18.6%, BMW, Mini -17.9 %, Mercedes -14.6 %, and Ford -4.4%. even VW, market-share leader and on a phenomenal worldwide roll, was down 1.5%.

Retail sales, which had also been doing very well, stalled. And the closely watched Ifo index for July deteriorated so sharply that Hans-Werner Sinn, President of the Ifo Institute, admitted, “the euro crisis is having an increasingly negative impact on the German economy.”

Germany’s manufacturing industry is now in a rout. Output and new orders dove in July at a rate not seen since April 2009, the depth of the great recession. it was the 4th month in a row of lower production volumes, and the 13th months in a row (!) of declining new orders—a terror for future production. the overall PMI index crashed to the lowest level since June 2009. Exports were hardest hit, particularly to Western Europe, Asia, and the US, the three largest markets in the world! the decline in exports was steepest since may 2009. And there is talk of “job shedding.”

These trends are reminiscent of the financial crisis, when export orders fell off a cliff, causing GDP to plunge 2.1% in the fourth quarter of 2008 and a horrid 3.8% in the first quarter of 2009. Annualized, those two quarters amounted to a double-digit decline in GDP—the worst two quarters in the history of the Federal Republic. the German economy lives and dies by its exports.

Yet my contacts in Germany remain “relaxed.” There’s no malaise or panic. “In the countryside, everything goes on regardless,” wrote one of them. Restaurants are doing well. People have jobs, wages are going up. Inflation has backed off. the recent feeling of optimism, after years of pessimism, is still hanging in the air. People are bidding up rental properties and plowing their savings into brick and mortar. Well-educated Greeks and Spaniards are heading to Germany in search of work. For them, it’s nirvana. the German government, through various organizations, is trying to rope in its expats in Silicon Valley and lure them back with special incentives to fill the shortage of qualified talent at home. clearly, the numbers I mentioned haven’t yet made their way into the perception of day-to-day reality.

The public debate about bailing out Spain or Greece, and about Draghi’s plan to go on a bond-buying binge, is taking place to the backdrop of a sweetly humming economy. But the ear-piercing screech of the German export machinery as it shifts gears will change the debate—and the political will. German exporters, a super-powerful lobby, will push for all-out “do-whatever-it-takes” flooding of the Eurozone with money. On the other hand, if prospects of layoffs or forced part-time work (Kurzarbeit) are hounding consumers, their appetite for bailing out southern countries will fade altogether—and so will Germany’s ability to do so.

Meanwhile, Eurozone heads of state, top politicians, unelected kingpins, and bureaucratic honchos threatened everyone in sight with the demise of the euro. And then Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti went on attack. An ‘attack on democracy.’ Read…. Escalation of the Extortion Racket: Now It’s ‘the Dissolution of Europe’ Not Just the Eurozone.

Danny Coale Returns To Practice

On Tuesday, rookie receiver Danny Coale was back on the field for the first time since suffering a fractured left foot on the first day of organized team activities back in may, and though he admitted his route running wasn’t quite where it was prior to the injury, the fifth round pick out of Virginia Tech was happy to just be back with his teammates following a layoff of more than two months.

It was awesome to be out here,” Coale said, per the Dallas Morning News.

Coale is one of a handful of receivers thought to be in the mix, so to speak, for the vacant Nos. 3 and 4 receiver roles. But after being sidelined for such a considerable amount of time, the rookie is just looking to play catch-up and adjust to the NFL game as quickly as possible.

“It’s just the mechanics of getting back into it,” he said. “There will be a learning curve here. But hopefully it won’t last too long and we can get things going.”

KFVS12 News & Weather Cape Girardeau, Carbondale, Poplar BluffUS: China garrison raises tension in disputed sea

By MATTHEW PENNINGTONAssociated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) – The United States on Friday criticized China's new military garrison in the contested South China Sea as risking an escalation in tensions.

The State Department statement underscored U.S. concerns about the situation in the resource-rich sea, a potential flashpoint. It voiced strong support for diplomatic efforts by Southeast Asian nations to negotiate with China, the region's rising military power which claims virtually all of the sea for itself and would prefer Washington stay out of the matter.

The Senate on Thursday also urged restraint among China and five of its neighbors and said the U.S. was committed to assisting Southeast Asian nations remaining “strong and independent.”

Washington's response comes 10 days after China formally established Sansha city on a remote island 220 miles from its southernmost province. Sansha is intended to administer hundreds of thousands of square miles of water where China wants to strengthen its control over disputed and potentially oil-rich islands. The Philippines, a U.S. treaty ally, has described China's move as unacceptable. Vietnam called it a violation of international law.

The State Department said the new city and military garrison “run counter to collaborative diplomatic efforts to resolve differences and risk further escalating tensions in the region.”

Beijing has announced plans to set up such a garrison for Sansha and has named officers to lead it but has provided no other details.

The U.S. statement also follows an acrimonious annual meeting of the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations last month, where for the first time in its 45-year history, the bloc failed to issue a communique. The host country, Cambodia, viewed as pro-Beijing, rejected a proposal by the Philippines and Vietnam to mention their separate territorial disputes with China.

Bonnie Glaser, a China expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies think tank in Washington, said the U.S. seeks to shore up ASEAN unity and weaken China's ability to intimidate and coerce its neighbors.

She noted that the statement, which follows high-level deliberations within the Obama administration on the issue, makes no mention of other nations' actions as provocative. That would annoy China, “which increasingly views the U.S. as taking sides and emboldening Vietnam and the Philippines to confront China on South China Sea matters,” Glaser said.

The statement noted an uptick in “confrontational rhetoric, disagreements over resource exploitation (and) coercive economic actions,” and criticized the use of barriers to block access to the Scarborough Reef, scene of a standoff between Chinese and Philippine vessels since April. It urged ASEAN and China to make progress on a code of conduct for addressing disagreements in the South China Sea.

The standoff at the reef, which the Philippines views as within its exclusive economic zone, began after Chinese fishing boats were stopped by Philippine vessels. Manila deployed a navy ship, supplied by the U.S. the previous year, leading China to send more vessels of its own and quarantine Philippine fruit exports to China. Manila says Beijing has not fully complied with a June agreement, supported by the U.S., for a mutual withdrawal and has used barriers to block Philippine access to the reef.

China is also critical of Vietnam, which passed a law in June stating its jurisdiction over the Paracel and Spratly Island chains and declaring that all foreign naval ships entering these areas must notify Vietnamese authorities.

The United States, which has tens of thousands of forces based in the Asia-Pacific, views itself as a stabilizing influence in the region, and its diplomacy on the South China Sea, where it says it holds no position on the competing sovereignty claims, has helped boost its standing in Southeast Asia. but criticism of China risks straining ties with Beijing that the U.S. also sees as crucial for regional stability.

Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney has accused President Barack Obama of being soft on China and has promised to get tougher, particularly over Beijing's trading practices.
