Sometimes people feel that they have some imperfection that could be changed to give them a better confidence in themselves. a ugly birthmark or natural wrinkles in the skin can cause a person to think of cosmetic surgery. Before you think about taking on cosmetic operations to change your features, have a good understanding of the possible dangers of plastic surgery. if you feel that the potential benefits outweigh the risks, then you will be at a much better comfort.
Although plastic surgery is considered a smaller procedure compared to medical surgeries, it still remains a surgical procedure. For this, any person that takes on a surgical operation has the ultimate risk and that is death. one must know this before going in but you must also realize that the chances of having complications to lead to death through cosmetic surgery are virtually non existent.
Another possible danger of plastic surgery can be the result of scarring. how this occurs is when the surgical doctor performs the procedure, they make cuts to the skin. when your skin is cut it is naturally responsive to create scars. Majority of the time scars can be hidden, while others can be quite visible which would defeat the whole purpose of cosmetic surgery. You must before hand have the confidence in your physician that they are skilled and reputable in this area.
Another problem that could occur is the possibility of an infection to create in the area of work. when your skin is cut, if not treated correctly, bacteria can enter into the open cuts, causing a infection from the bacteria. You should be educated by the physician themselves on how you can properly take of of your cuts to the skin. this will also allow you to understand how to detect sings of infections before they become worse.
When you are operated on, like mentioned before, you skin is penetrated and it is open wound. Many people can experience bleeding. being a very rare occurrence, if the physician makes a tiny wrong cut, this could cause the possibility of significant bleeding. this causes an inconvenience of maybe you having to stay longer in the hospital than you had anticipated. You will be instructed to notify instantly your physician or caretaker if you notice bleeding.
Nerve damage has become a potential threat during cosmetic surgeries. again, if the physician performing the procedure is not highly trained then you could have the chance of incision to penetrate a nerve causing damage. what this could lead to is a paralysis to the muscle, which can have two forms of very mild or obvious.
Like with everything else in life there are always possible risks and it is good to be aware of them. Proper research and knowledge will help you to the most safest form of surgery. Educate yourself on preventing complications if they occur before they build to a more severe condition. And be sure to report any problems as fast as you can to your doctor.
Disney’s Ariel appears in The little Mermaid surgery ad by Venezuela’s Clinica Dempere. her post-plastic surgery appearance after she’s gone under the sea, ehem knife has caused a stir. many are outraged at the suggestion the animated character needs a nip and tuck and Botox.
Little Mermaid surgery ad details
On August 16, BuzzFeed discovered the picture that was posted on the Internet by a plastic surgery clinic in Venezuela. Among other things, the company showcased how Ariel looked after trying out a few services the company offers. It’s not likely Disney had anything to do with the controversial photo.
Ariel, the little Mermaid is shown in a supposed “new and improved” look. her lips are fuller, suggesting Botox injections and it appears she had a jaw augmentation. and the boobs look like they were, well…enhanced, Pamela Anderson-style.
The little Mermaid surgery advertisement even features Ariel’s new set of legs sculpted out of her tail. what were they thinking about the questionable ad?
Little Mermaid plastic surgery ad gone too far?
Nowadays, the “The Real Wives of Beverly Hills” and “Basketball Wives” set the standard of “good looks,” it is shocking that a doctor would use a hallowed and beloved mermaid to market their plastic surgery services.
As a result, it sends a message to fans of the Disney mermaid character that she needs some work done. Doctors boast about Botox cures for sagging skin and less-than-pouty-lips.
Obviously, viewers of the program are primarily young girls and teens. Therefore, it seems quite apparent that the company is planting a seed in the younger generation to foster a group of future clients. what rubbish!
Well, does the little Mermaid surgery ad of Ariel break any rules of decency, or is it just tongue-in-cheek?

When I read the article about the bullied girl who had plastic surgery on her ears, nose and chin because she was tired of being taunted and teased, it bothered me on many levels. I know what bullying is like, and I’ll agree that it’s awful. However, I felt that such changes were drastic and that there were some deeper issues as to why this girl couldn’t accept herself the way she was. as the surgeon, I would have recommended counseling before going through such procedures. Instead, he said she had “deformities.” I’ve seen deformities and I don’t feel that this girl was “deformed” in any way. She could have done other things to make herself feel more confident, such as getting her hair cut and styled to make her ears stick out less and frame her face better. I also read another article about something similar, involving nose jobs and botox for teens.
I think this girl could have also gone to her mother or talked to an adult she trusted at the school about how bad the bullying was. Instead, she kept silent as it continued to escalate. And when she finally told her mom, instead of working through the problem together, her mom immediately resorted to plastic surgery. I think it was like saying that was the solution–or that she also couldn’t accept her daughter’s physical appearance, either.
Another factor in all this is that girls who are deemed to be attractive have been bullied, as well. They’re seen as a potential threat when it comes down to the bully liking a guy and seeing him talk to certain girls. in the case of Phoebe Prince, a girl who committed suicide over two years ago as a result of bullying, she was attractive and girls made up rumors about her because she was talking to guys they liked. The bullies even got the guys on their side to gang up on her. So being attractive isn’t always the key to staying free of bullies.
Growing up, I had wild curly hair that would get frizzy all the time. Naturally, I got teased over this fact often. People would call me names or ask if I stuck my finger in an electric socket. However, I never once thought of straightening it or keeping it hidden under a hat. (I did, however, take sick days from school when I was having a bad hair day. I could only take so much from people.) When I was in high school, I became friends with other girls who had curly hair and we’d wear it wildly and proudly. Being Jewish, my hair defined me…but so did my nose, which is slightly crooked if you look at me from the side, and red on top because of an accident in high school. However, as much as my mom would try to pressure me to get a nose job, I never wanted to. I saw girls having it done, but was too scared to get one myself. I think I read one too many articles about Jennifer Grey and thought the idea of something changing my face or making me unrecognizable would be too awful to even fathom!
As a mom, I worry about potential bullying and have already talked to my sons about not making fun of people for their differences. However, I haven’t talked to them much about how to handle being bullied and I realize that this is a discussion we need to have soon. my son E wears a cochlear implant, which already makes him stand out a bit. he has been confident about his implant and thankfully his school conducts a seminar for kindergarten students about hearing loss, since it’s so prevalent in his school. now that he’s in first grade, it’s going to be a whole new playing field. hopefully the kids will have retained what they learned about hearing loss and will continue to be accepting. I do worry about the kids who decide it’s a reason for them to be mean to him and how he’ll handle it when that happens. Even thinking about it breaks my heart. my daughter also has cochlear implants and I worry that she’ll face challenges as she gets older and has to deal with possible “mean girls.”
All I can do to combat this is to educate my kids about how to handle bullies–and instill confidence in them about their cochlear implants and why they are so important to wear. I clearly can’t give them new cochleas in their ears the way I had LASIK done for my eyes (which was done to help my vision, more than for vanity, as I looked cute in glasses). I’m also not going to suggest plastic surgery as an answer to their problems. I think my kids are adorable and wouldn’t change a thing about their physical appearance. I just hope they have enough confidence in themselves to deal with whatever comes their way as they get older.

Women are constantly being reminded that their biological clocks are ticking.
Aunts, moms, and friends are known for shouting out irritating lines like, “Do it while you can—before you go gray!” and “Isn’t it time you start thinking about babies?”
But the pressure to get pregnant young doesn’t only come from aunts who want a cuddly baby to hold. Researchers have found again and again that younger women have fewer complications during pregnancy and healthier babies.
After age 35, things all start to go downhill. A woman’s fertility plummets, her eggs dry up, and her risk of preterm labor, miscarriage, preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, and hypertension goes up with every year that passes. What’s more, after 35 the risk of having a child with Down syndrome increases. all of these increased risks send women into a tailspin to figure out how to get pregnant before the time bomb goes off at age 40.
The age of the mother has long been considered the most important factor in determining the odds of a child having developmental problems, according to The NY Times—so much that any women who gets pregnant after age 35 often feels tremendous amounts of guilt and worry. and women often find themselves scheduling their lives around getting pregnant before 40.
But the tables are suddenly turning after a study found that children of older dads are at an increased risk for autism and schizophrenia. and the real kicker here is that children of older moms are not at an increased risk.
The risk of chromosomal abnormalities, like Down syndrome, increases for older mothers, but when it comes to some complex developmental and psychiatric problems, the lion’s share of the genetic risk originates in the sperm, not the egg, the study found.
The study published in Nature concluded that older men pass more gene mutations down to their children than a younger father because the rate of mutations increases with age. What’s more, mutations occur more frequently in men than women because sperm have to divide multiple more times than eggs.
This is only one study and further research needs to be done, but reactions to the findings have been strong and abundant. the New York Times article attracted over 500 comments, and ne reader wrote in, “I don’t think I have seen an article spur so many comments as this one.”
Why all the passionate interest in the study? Many people wrote in to criticize the study and point out that the study sample of 98 families was too small, and the anti-vaccine groups also stepped in to make their case that vaccines are the “real” culprit.
Interestingly, several older soon-to-be dads wrote in to share their concern about the fate of their future child. one commented: “I’m about to have panic attack.” (The odds of an older man fathering an autistic child are still low–although the study authors do suggest that younger men freeze their sperm.)
But the most surprising emotion came from women who guiltily expressed relief that for once they weren’t the ones “responsible” for their children’s problems.
Farnaz of Orange County, Calif., wrote in:
For once the finger is pointed at ‘fathers’ vs. ‘mothers’. I hate to admit that this is refreshing, but it is!
When this study hit online news sites and started circulating around the Internet universe it was as if women were breathing a huge sigh of relief. one mom friend of mine sent out the article and included a simple message:
Letting mom’s off the hook for something!
Of course, this study isn’t about moms and their twisted relationship with guilt or about pointing fingers at dads. It’s about the hundreds of thousands of children who are affected by autism and schizophrenia and researchers’ tireless efforts to figure out what’s at the root of these developmental problems. that said, the reactions to the study results are fascinating and can’t go unnoticed and they do say something about our society: Women are tired of always being the ones at fault.
What’s more, there’s something deeply satisfying about imagining a man looking at his calendar and realizing that he needs to put off climbing Mount Kilimanjaro and starting his own tech company so he can have a baby.
In the upcoming edition of Star Magazine, celebrities are being called out on their ridiculous, crazy demands. It’s no surprise to us that the Hollywood elite demand — and require — outrageous things to be done or given to them, but it does make us want to gag a little bit or curl up in a very tight ball and roll our eyes all day. The demands aren’t simple ones. The demands aren’t easy ones or even logical, comprehensible ones. they are merely the requests of celebrities, the royalty of popular society.
The cover reports that Justin Timberlake requires mirrors to be installed above every one of his hotel beds. Probably just to watch himself relax, right? Kim Kardashian‘s requests aren’t much better, as the magazine says that she makes people flush her toilets! That does require a lot of energy . . . I wish I had someone to flush my toilets. Check out the other demands featured on the cover: Madonna requires a DNA cleanup crew to follow her around everywhere she goes (You know, that MDNA is dangerous stuff); Britney Spears gets crazy and vicious with her coffee orders, demanding that she has three at a time; and Kristen Stewart threatens to fire people if they don’t get her a drink.
*le sigh* Doesn’t this make you want to be all of their friends? Yeah, right. this is just a really juicy cover this week. while the Celebrity Demands constitute the bulk of this edition, there are also a few other good stories in there, including one about the blandest couple in Hollywood . . . .
In the upper righthand corner, we get a glimpse of Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux, who recently gave Jennifer a fat diamond ring. There’s a lot of talk circulating around regarding this hasty engagement. is Justin truly ready to make the leap down the aisle? is Jen making a mistake by choosing to marry him? Don’t forget to pick up this new edition, which hits shelves on August 17th, to get your answers to these important questions.

A spine discectomy is a surgical procedure in which the central portion of an intervertebral disc, the nucleus polpusus, which is causing pain, by stressing the spinal cord or radiating nerves, is removed. Advances in options have produced effective alternatives to traditional discectomy procedures. Spine discectomy surgery is a minimally invasive spine surgery procedure recommended for its low morbidity rate. During the procedure, an incision less than 3 cm is made between two adjacent lumbar spinous processes. Subperiosteal separation of Para spinal muscles from the spinous processes and laminae is performed. A suitable double hook retractor is selected and the hooks are placed over the lateral aspect of the adjacent spine region. The hooks avoid the interspinous ligament. A suitable flat blade is now introduced on the sides of the paraspinal muscles. The parallel bars of the retractor system are now introduced in the slots available on the blades, and are distracted over a serrated bar. This maneuver now efficiently retracts the paraspinal muscle away from the spinous processes and thus providing a rectangular surgical field exposing the adjacent laminae, interlaminar space and the medial edge of the facet joint. The interspinous ligament is not disturbed. The benefit of spine discectomy is that patients stay in hospitals is minimized; normal routine can be started again very soon. Growing number of men seek out cosmetic procedures By Karen Dandurant August 12, 2012 2:00 AM
Cosmetic surgery is no longer merely the realm of Hollywood celebrities, and its potential improvements are not just sought by women.
Procedures being sought by men are now considered mainstream. Doctors say the number of men who seek cosmetic surgery, while still less than women, is growing every year.
According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, in 2011, men received 796,086 cosmetic procedures. while that is slightly less than 10 percent of the figure for women, at 8,398,424, it is still significant.
Statistics released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons show more men are going under the knife. overall cosmetic plastic surgery procedures in men were up 2 percent in 2010 compared to 2009. however, many male surgical procedures increased significantly. Facelifts for men rose 14 percent in 2010 while male liposuction increased 7 percent.
The 2010 ASPS statistics show the majority of the men’s top 10 fastest-growing cosmetic procedures are surgical, which bucks the previous trend of growth in minimally-invasive treatments.
“The growth in cosmetic surgical procedures for men may be a product of our aging baby boomers that are now ready to have plastic surgery,” said ASPS President Phillip Haeck, M.D. “Minimally-invasive procedures such as Botox and soft-tissue fillers work to a point. however, as you age and gravity takes over, surgical procedures that lift the skin are necessary in order to show significant improvement.”
Local cosmetic surgeons agree with the ASPS, based on the trends they are seeing in their practices.
“I definitely see a lot more men every year,” said Dr. Richard Zeff, M.D., P.A., in Stratham. “We are not all born with perfect bodies. Some come to see me with aesthetic concerns. there is something they want to improve.”
Others come for professional reasons, he said.
“If you are 64 years old and competing with a 40-year-old in the job market it can be intimidating,” he said. “You may feel young and up to the job, but that might not be how you think others perceive you. the men can’t stand that they look much older than they feel, older than they perceive themselves.”
There are two main types of cosmetic adjustments, those requiring surgery and those considered minimally invasive. According to the 2010 ASPS statistics, the top five surgical procedures sought by men are rhinoplasty (nose), eyelids tightening, liposuction, breast reduction and hair transplants. the top five less-invasive procedures are Botox, laser hair removal, microdermabrasion, chemical peels and soft-tissue fillers.
Zeff said he sees a lot of the non-invasive procedure requests.
“It’s more comfortable and there really is no downside,” he said. “Botox lasts three to five months. the tissue fillers are good for about one year.”
Liposuction is a big area of choice for both men and women. Zeff said men seek liposuction for those “love handles” around the waist.
“There is a common misconception that a person who seeks liposuction has failed, or is taking the easy way out when it comes to weight loss,” Zeff said. “Losing weight is great, but you still have the same body. it doesn’t change your fat distribution. if you are pear-shaped; you’ll be a smaller pear shape. if you have a spare tire around your middle, you will be smaller, with a spare tire. A thousand sit-ups a day won’t rid you of fat in those places you are aiming for. Liposuction can change your body shape.”
Men, as they get older, also want gynocomastia, a procedure to reduce the size of their breasts.
“I have men, some who would otherwise appear to be in good shape who come to me and say they haven’t taken their shirt off at the beach in 30 years,” Zeff said. “It’s a terrible embarrassment for them. it is fairly easy to remedy but as a necessity, we will first rule out any possibility of breast cancer.”
In his experience, facials are not as common in men as in women, but spot adjustments are, Zeff said. He does a lot with eyelid surgery for men, either reducing or increasing skin, as needed.
Of course, society and American culture play a large role in requests for cosmetic surgery. Zeff said people buy into the public perception of youth and beauty, men included. That can pose its own ethical quandaries.
“It’s undeniable,” he said. “The cosmetic industry works hard to promote their products. the truly ethical among us have to weigh those requests carefully. Physical enhancement must be ethically reasonable. there is a term, dysmorphia, meaning an attempt to make yourself completely into something you are not. I have seen this in women, but I personally have never seen a case in a male yet.”
Dr. Charles Gaudet of Portsmouth said men now seek cosmetic surgery because they want to look more youthful, more refreshed. and, they also go because it is now more accepted in society.
“Men have more of a comfort level with the procedures now,” Gaudet said. “It’s not just something they see as done in Hollywood or new York City. they know the procedures are available and they are taking advantage of the confidence it gives them. the only real difference I see is that men tend to do this privately, where women are more open to discussing cosmetic surgery with their friends.”
Gaudet said men make up about 10 percent of his practice now. He routinely does eyelid surgery, facial rejuvenations, and liposuction and breast reduction.
“Most of the men I see come in knowing exactly what they want to do,” he said. “They love to engage in discussions about the possibilities but for the most part know what they want and stick to that. they are tired of people saying they look tired. they are tired of looking old for their age.”
Plastic surgeons say another trend they see in male plastic surgery is the type of patient seeking their services.
“Typically, people think of celebrities and high profile men undergoing cosmetic surgery,” said Dr. Stephen Baker, M.D., an ASPS member surgeon based in Washington, D.C. “And while that may be true, the typical male cosmetic surgery patient that I see is an average guy who wants to look as good as he feels. most of my patients are ‘men’s men,’ the kind of guy you might not think would have plastic surgery.”
Baker said baby boomers now reaching retirement age are the new face of the male plastic surgery trend.
“They want to look good. So when they have the financial means to do it, they are ready to do it now,” Baker said.
In fact, one of Baker’s patients is an “average Joe.” Joe recently underwent a facelift and eyelid surgery. the 57-year old said, “I didn’t feel that old. I felt young. I was working out. I was pretty active and I wanted to look like I felt inside.”
Joe also said his girlfriend supported his decision to have plastic surgery.
Fees charged by the members of the surgical team vary depending on the desired cosmetic surgery. the average cost is: liposuction from $2,000, facelift from between $5,000 to $10,000, Botox injections from $300, eyelid surgery from $2,000, nose job from $3,000.
Elective cosmetic surgery, as with any surgical procedure, does have risks as well as benefits.
An international study, led by researchers at the Medical Research Council Lifecourse Epidemiology Unit (MRC LEU) at the University of Southampton, has found that obese patients who undergo bariatric surgery are not at an increased risk of broken bones in the first few years after the operation.
However, the study, published in the British Medical Journal today (DATE) has shown that there is a possibility of an increase in fracture risk after three to five years.Generally, a higher Body Mass Index (BMI) protects the bone against most types of fracture because a higher BMI is associated with increased bone density. Additionally there is more protection around the bones.Studies have shown that weight loss can lead to a reduction of bone density and specifically studies have suggested that bone density is lost after bariatric surgery; however no previous work has been able to investigate whether such changes might result in an increased risk of fracture relative to a control population.Bariatric surgery, or weight-loss surgery, is used to treat people with potentially life-threatening obesity and that will not respond to non-surgical treatments. the most widely used forms of weight-loss surgery are gastric bypass or gastric band. Weight-loss surgery rates have been increasing over the years with the number of hospital procedures for weight-loss stomach surgery rising to 8,087 in 2010/11 – 12 per cent higher than in 2009/10 when there were 7,214.during the study, Southampton researchers, together with colleagues at the University of Utrecht, Netherlands, and the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, London, compared the fracture rates of people who had had bariatric surgery between 1987 and 2010, with people who had not had the surgery but were matched by age, sex, body mass index, practice, and calendar year. Results showed that compared to the control group, the overall risk of fracture was not significantly increased in bariatric surgery patients in the first few years post-operation, but there was a slight trend towards an increased fracture risk after three to five years. the researchers also found a slight tendency for fracture risk to increase with greater post-operative decrease in body mass index.Dr Nicholas Harvey, Senior Lecturer at the MRC LEU at the University of Southampton comments: “Obesity is an increasing public health problem worldwide, which affects between 15 and 20 per cent of Europeans; it has been recognised that surgical treatment is the most effective route to weight loss for many with morbid obesity. overall, for the first few post-operative years, these results are reassuring for patients undergoing bariatric surgery, but do not exclude a more protracted adverse influence on skeletal health.”Professor Cyrus Cooper, Director and Professor of Rheumatology, at the MRC LEU, adds: “with increasing numbers of obese individuals in the UK, bariatric surgery is becoming more common and has been associated with a reduction in bone density after the operation. this is the first time that we have been able to investigate risk of fracture following bariatric surgery by comparing patients with non-surgical controls. the results suggest that, at least in the short term, such changes in bone density are unlikely to lead to increased fracture risk.”
“Acne strikes all teenagers equally, regardless of sex, race, or ethnicity,” according to the American Academy of Dermatology. “While acne is a physical problem, explains reporter Angela Palmer, “it also affects teen psychologically.…having a big impact on self-esteem and self-confidence.”
At Gillum Facial Plastic Surgery, where patients’ self-esteem and self-confidence are what we’re all about, we agree with one mother who’d told her son Alex, “Today, you don’t have to have acne.” At least not without doing something about it, we say, and Levulan ALA® is that new state-of-the-art something.
Levulan ALA® is the name of a treatment for eliminating acne on the face, chest, scalp, back, and hands, a photodynamic acne treatment we use at our Carmel aesthetic surgery center and spa for both teens and adults.
Prior to the discovery of ALA , the best available treatment option for acne was the drug Accutane. Unfortunately, Accutane often produces serious side effects. Always on the alert for the latest technological advancements in surgical and nonsurgical treatments for the skin, Dr. Timothy Gillum now brings relief to acne sufferers. Most are now able to discontinue Accutane use.
Levulan itself is a clear solution that is applied to acne-affected skin. The liquid is absorbed into acne cells, making them more sensitive to the special blue light. The combination of the Levulan and the light minimizes pores and reduces the size of the sebaceous glands. At both our Gillum facial Plastic Surgery Centers, Levulan ALA has taken its place on our menu of minimally invasive procedures that do not require surgery, but which have a major positive impact on our patients’ appearance.
“Teenagers with acne tend to have a poor body image,” laments Angela Palmer. “Teens may be unwilling to participate in sports such as swimming because of embarrassment about their skin.”
Just maybe, today, it doesn’t have to be that way. At our aesthetic surgery center, beautiful, healthy faces are our specialty!
