‘Falling Skies’ Recap: Death and War on ‘Molon Labe’

Falling Skies is really upping the ante in season two. In episode seven, “Molon Labe,” new dangers and threats are uncovered when Ben (Connor Jessup) and Karen (Jessy Schram) are on the run. but they’re not headed to the skidder rebellion; rather, they run smack into Karen’s master, one of the fish heads, and a bunch of other aliens. Karen’s disloyalty to second Mass and that storyline seemed to wrap up fast, but there’s a reason why: there’s so much more of the aliens’ story to be told.

Second Mass is amazingly able to kidnap the fish head leader and bring him back to the hospital, but that’s definitely not in everyone’s best interests. the aliens want their leader back, and even claim that they’ll all be free to leave if they return him. if not, things will get worse.

And “worse” is the biggest understatement ever on Falling Skies. After Tom (Noah Wyle) sets off an explosion to stop a rear attack, he’s unwittingly trapped Lourdes (Seychelle Gabriel), Anne (Moon Bloodgood), and his son Matt (Maxim Knight) in the hospital’s basement. Jamil (Brandon Jay McLaren) goes down to save them, but he only gets attacked himself: by creepy crawling metal spider-looking aliens.

Hal (Drew Roy) and Maggie (Sarah Carter) discover these aliens, too—but only after a long-coming kiss. but that love story will most definitely have to wait, considering the battle they’re all now fighting—both on the front lines and in the hospital as the metal aliens start working their way through the walls, and through Jamil’s body.

Matt, Lourdes, and Anne are now trapped in the blood lab. but thanks to some quick thinking and Matt climbing through a vent to go get help, they blast their way to temporary freedom using an oxygen tank to make a flame torch.

The doctors and Matt are safe, for now, but what will second Mass do about the fish head and the battle that rages just outside the hospital’s doors?

First, Tom tries talking to the fish head. but, through Ben, the alien only angers Tom more, claiming that by the humans obstructing the inevitable, there will only be more pain and suffering. and he says the humans’ greatest weakness is “sentiment.” to prove him both right and wrong—after Ben seizes because of the alien—Tom shoots the fish head, rather than release him.

It’s a good plan too, because then Tom gives Karen what she wants: a meeting with her dying leader. They also rig the room with explosives, so if the aliens do an air attack, the leader will still die. So much for Karen believing everything can be predicted, something she supposedly learned from the fish head.

With the room rigged to blow, second Mass is finally allowed to leave the hospital and hit the road, but that’s still not without more casualties. Tom may now believe in the skidder rebellion, but he also understands why Ben needs to leave second Mass. Ben will only put the humans in danger, and he’s determined to find more unharnessed kids like himself, as well as the rebellion.

As he heads the opposite way, second Mass heads to Charleston, and that too promises to be a bumpy road, because nothing is ever easy in this alien world.

Falling Skies “Molon Labe” was the most deftly plotted, intense, and creepiest episode to date. what do you think is next for second Mass? the TNT drama returns in two weeks on August 5 at 9 p.m. Eastern.

If you are interested in contouring your body, you have probably considered undergoing liposuction at one time or another. below are some answers to the most common questions people have about liposuction surgery.

What is liposuction?Liposuction is a cosmetic surgical procedure that removes fat deposits from under the skin. Liposuction is done using special equipment that essentially breaks up stubborn fat stores and suctions them out from under the skin. Liposuction is a safe and effective way to remove excess fat particularly in the midsection and thighs.

Am I a candidate for liposuction? If you have excess fat that you can’t seem to get rid of you may be a candidate for liposuction. Liposuction is an option for both men and women. an initial consultation with the doctor will help determine whether liposuction is a good option in your specific case.

Is liposuction safe?Liposuction is a safe procedure when performed by a qualified doctor. the procedure should be done in a medical facility. When choosing a doctor look for a qualified cosmetic surgeon who has training and experience specializing in liposuction procedures.

What happens during liposuction?Liposuction encompasses two main components. first, the affected fat is injected with a special liquid that will help to break up the fat. Once the fat is sufficiently broken down the liquid and fat are removed from under the skin using a suction device. the procedure is done slowly to ensure that each section is properly completed.

What areas of the body can liposuction be used on?Liposuction works best on places that contain large areas of stubborn fat stores. the most common areas include the stomach and the thighs however liposuction can also be used on other areas including the buttocks and arms. your doctor will discuss the procedure with you and will recommend the best areas in each particular case.

How much does liposuction cost?Liposuction costs can vary greatly depending on the extent of liposuction that is being done. Liposuction is usually considered cosmetic surgery so it may not be covered by your medical insurance. Patients can check with their insurance provider to determine what portions will be covered. To make liposuction affordable most doctors offer flexible payment plans or financing. this gives patients small monthly payments to make liposuction accessible to everyone.

Types of Cosmetic Surgery Procedures

Body rejuvenation through a variety of cosmetic surgery procedures has seen a significant rise in quite a few years now. The latest advancements in plastic and cosmetic techniques have given a significant boost to the trend.

Once limited to rich, famous A-list personalities, including actors, singers, fashion models and socialites, the practice of surgical procedures to make the body parts look more prominent is now a growing phenomenon among common population, including men, women and teens.

It seems as if almost everyone, regardless of age, is getting at least one form or another of cosmetic surgery (aesthetic surgery) to look young and beautiful forever.

Cosmetic surgery procedures are mostly preferred by individuals who wish to correct a physical defect that makes them feel uncomfortable, reconstruct a specific body part that is damaged or removed due to cancer or any other unknown reason, or alter the physical changes like stretch marks, sagging skin and eye bags caused by age or pregnancy. there are some procedures that can help overweight and obese people to get rid of the accumulated fat from respective body parts and get in shape.

The use of cosmetic surgery procedures has soared in popularity in recent years, with a total of 13.8 million plastic surgery procedures performed in 2011, as per the statistics provided by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).

Types

For people crazy for fashion and desirable body, there is an impressive range of cosmetic surgery procedures to choose from, each of which is used to transform about every imaginable part of the face and body.

Some of the most popular procedures which normally find plenty of takers include:

Liposuction: An extremely popular cosmetic surgery procedure designed to permanently pump out pockets of fat from specific spots on the body. it is the highly sought after cosmetic procedure by men as well as women. The most common areas of the body where liposuction procedure is performed include the abdomen, the thighs, the chin or hips.

Facelift: Technically called Rhytidectomy, facelift is essentially a part of anti ageing treatment that involves tightening of the facial and neck muscles and removing any excess skin, leaving a wrinkle-free, more youthful appearance.

Nose Job (Rhinoplasty): this surgical procedure is done to enhance the aesthetic appearance of the nose, improving its shape and size.

Tummy Tuck: Abdominoplasty is the medical term for tummy tuck. it is used to get rid of excess fat and skin from the abdominal area, giving you a tightened and flattened abdomen.

Breast Surgery: a variety of breast surgeries are there to correct, improve or reconstruct the women’s chest. Breast implant surgery, for instance, is used to augment or enlarge the boob size using saline filled prosthesis. For the drooping breasts there is breast lift and for oversized breasts women can choose breast reduction surgery.

There are several other procedures people choose to people opt to treat the problem areas of the body.

Thigh Lift: Also known as thigh tuck, or thighplasty, it is a surgical procedure used to reshape thigh and buttock area by reducing excess skin and fat.

Upper Arm Lift (Brachioplasty): For the excess loose skin in the arms, upper arm lift is the only solution.

Calf Lift: it is a procedure that aims to restore symmetry to the legs and improve the overall appearance and functionality of the calves.

Cheek and Chin Implants: it is a procedure that involves implanting a small synthetic implant over the cheekbone and over the natural chin bone to change the shape and size of the chin and cheeks.

Lip implant, eyelid surgery, ear shaping and forehead lift are some facial cosmetic surgeries that are designed to help you sculpt your ideal face.

Josh Hutcherson Shows Off His Broken Nose

The Hunger Games star Josh Hutcherson was spotted here in SoCal this week sporting a bandage on his face. it would seem that Josh had a run in with a plastic surgeon. as you can see in the photo below, Hutcherson is nursing an injury that came from nose surgery. according to his press rep, Josh suffered from a deviated septum which he had fixed … but here in Hollywood, an excuse like that usually means it was a cosmetic “nose job”.

With his face bruised and bandaged up, “Hunger Games” star Josh Hutcherson was spotted leaving a doctor’s office in Beverly Hills on Monday … after suffering a mysterious injury to his nose. Hutcherson first tweeted about the injury on may 9th … saying, “just had surgery to fix my broken nose” … and later his rep told us the actor had been diagnosed with a deviated septum. but there’s one big question — how DID the 19-year-old movie star break his nose? Josh isn’t saying … and neither is his rep … who told TMZ “no further details will be released.”

Honestly, I have no reason not to take Hutcherson‘s press rep at their word … it is entirely possible and wholly feasible that Josh‘s deviated septum required surgery. BUT, the cynic in me can also wholly believe that Josh just wanted to get his nose fixed. Actors have these kinds of surgeries all the time … Hell, non-actors have these kinds of surgeries done all the time. IMHO, I see nothing wrong with plastic surgery. I have always hated my nose … but there is no way I would EVER choose to have surgery just for cosmetic purposes. Er, I say that now … but who knows, I might change my mind in the future. as for Josh, no matter the reason why, I just hope his new nose doesn’t make him look too different. I think he looked just fine before. Hopefully his new nose will look like his old nose ;)

More Jennifer Aniston Plastic Surgery Or Is She Just Gaining Weight?

Jennifer Aniston went on television in February of this year and finally admitted to Conan O’Brien that she had had plastic surgery. Not that any of us had ever doubted that Jen had had tons of cosmetic/plastic surgery, just that it was interesting to hear her admit it. Of course on Conan she focused on the laser peels she’d needed to remove her ‘sunspots’ and not all the other work she’s obviously had done over the years. We didn’t hear about her multiple nose jobs, for example.

Recent photos of Jen show that she has either gone in for some more serious plastic surgery or she is packing on the pounds… or both!  Jennifer’s face appears puffy and bloated – exactly like the face of someone who’s had lots of Restylane or Perlane injections into her cheeks and facial folds, according to celebrity plastic surgeon Dr. Michael Fiorillo.  Jen looks bloated and as Star Mag so eloquently put it ‘her usually streamlined features and chiseled jaw lines seem to have disappeared underneath new chubby cheeks and jowls.’  Don’t you just love Star – I know Jennifer does.

Of course it is also possible, as Star suggests, that Jen has not been to see her cosmetic surgery team but is trying out method acting.  This would entail her fattening up for her role as an over-the-hill slatternly prostitute in We’re the Millers.  This of course is so unlikely since Jen can’t act anyway and would NEVER jeopardize her appearance for anything as unimportant to her as being believable in a movie role. but the implication that Jen looks the part for her role as a burned-out prostitute is just a classic!

Star Magazine Print Edition, August 13 reports: is it method acting and method eating or something else? Jennifer Aniston sporting a frumpy, field-out face for her new film role.

Nicole Kidman won an Oscar in 2003 by wearing a fake hooked nose as writer Virginia Woolf in The Hours. a year later, Charlie Theron earned the trophy by sporting bad teeth and skin as a serial killer in Monster. is it Jennifer Aniston’s turn to take an unglamorous run at Academy Award gold?

That seems unlikely, as her latest comedy, We’re the Miller’s (now filming in North Carolina), in which she stars as a dowdy prostitute hired to play a pot smuggler’s wife, probably won’t make any film critics top-ten list. but there’s no denying that Jen’s face has undergone a fleshy transformation over a few short weeks.

But if Jen, 43, has purposely gain the weight for this role, it’s a smart career move, an insider tells Star. “She’s at the point where she has to realize she can play the glammed-up hottie forever. If she’s comfortable in his unflattering part, and made herself look less attractive for it, it makes Jen seem more human, and more likable, in the process.”

There’s also the possibility Jen’s fuller face could’ve been caused by a medical procedure. after looking at her recent photos, NYC-based plastic surgeon Dr. Ramtin Kassir speculated she may have gotten some facial fillers injected.

“She seems overfilled,” Dr. Kassir tells Star. “She now has wide, puffy cheeks and a less pronounced jaw line. It seems to have changed the contour of her face.

Jennifer is a celebrity who somehow turned a successful run on a TV sitcom into a lucrative, although not critically acclaimed, film career. her marriage to Brad Pitt was another miracle and losing him to Angelina Jolie cemented her A-list status.  Still, to me Jennifer Aniston has never had a performance I could stand to watch.  She exemplifies the modern ethos in which success has replaced talent and virtue as the standard by which we judge.

‘Little Baby Faces’ Offers Free Plastic Surgery for Bullied Kids, But Do They Need It?

DISCUSS (17)

Posted by Disinformation on July 29, 2012

Everyone probably experiences bullying at some time in their lives, and for some it can leave lifelong psychological scarring. For children, the right kind of adult intervention can make all the difference in the world. But what about the wrong kind? one organization, Little Baby Faces, offers free plastic surgery to bullied children, but their services aren’t just aimed at repairing disfigurements of various sorts. in the embedded video from CNN, one girl taunted for her “big ears” goes in for a consultation with Little Baby Faces and leaves with a laundry list of her physical imperfections.

Is it healthy when an adult not only reinforces the specious insults of a bully but then heaps on even more criticism? does minor physical imperfections warrant plastic surgery? what kind of lesson does this teach to the bullied, and how will this affect their development as human beings?

KFVS12 News & Weather Cape Girardeau, Carbondale, Poplar BluffUSDA says drought will push up food prices in 2013

By STEVE KARNOWSKIAssociated Press

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – The drought gripping more than half the country is a major reason why consumers can expect to pay 3 percent to 4 percent more for groceries next year, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said Wednesday.

Milk, eggs, beef, poultry and pork prices will all be affected because the drought has pushed up prices for feed, and that will eventually translate into higher prices for steaks, hamburger, pork chops and chicken. The good news for cost-conscious consumers is that prices for fruits and vegetables, as well as processed foods, aren't affected as much by the drought.

Exactly how much more people might pay for a pound of hamburger, for example, isn't known because those prices are affected by lots of factors, including how much of the increase a given supermarket might pass along to the consumer. But beef prices as a whole are expected to see the biggest jump at 4 percent to 5 percent, according to the USDA.

Dairy product prices are forecast to climb 3.5 percent to 4.5 percent; poultry and egg prices are projected to rise 3 percent to 4 percent; and pork prices are expected to rise 2.5 percent to 3.5 percent in 2013, the agency said.

“In 2013 as a result of this drought we are looking at above-normal food price inflation. … Consumers are certainly going to feel it,” USDA economist Richard Volpe said.

Normal grocery price inflation is about 2.8 percent a year, Volpe said, so even a 3 percent increase is slightly higher than usual. The USDA kept its projected food price increase for 2012 steady at 2.5 percent to 3.5 percent, saying average retail food prices were flat for the first half of 2012 thanks to unusually low fruit and vegetable prices as well as lower prices for milk and pork.

The new forecasts are the agency's first food price projections to factor in the drought, though experts have been warning for a few weeks that prices will rise. As fields dry out and crops wither across much of the country's midsection, prices for corn, soybeans and other commodities have soared in anticipation of tight supplies. that means farmers and ranchers will have to pay more to feed their livestock, and those costs eventually get passed on to consumers. Food prices typically climb about 1 percent for every 50 percent increase in average corn prices, according to agricultural economists.

Processed foods aren't affected as much because feed costs don't account for as much of their price tag. Fruits and vegetables aren't expected to be any more costly because they are irrigated even in normal weather. The USDA is projecting an overall 2 percent to 3 percent increase for all fruits and vegetables next year, the same as it expects this year.

USDA economists were aware of the drought a month ago when they did their last projections but didn't know how bad it would get, Volpe said.

“This drought was a surprise for everybody,” Volpe said. “The USDA was forecasting a record year for the corn crop until this drought materialized. now we're not going to get that.”

The drought now covers around 60 percent of the continental United States, the largest area since the epic droughts of the 1930s and 1950s.

“It's a disaster,” said Rick Tolman, CEO of the National Corn Growers Association, who noted farmers started out the season anticipating a record 14 billion bushel corn crop. The drought is expected to cut production by roughly 3 billion bushels. “We would have had adequate supplies, prices would have gone down. Instead we have the drought,” he said.

Scott Shellady, a commodities trader in Chicago, said the situation with the corn crop could affect other countries as well because U.S. food exports have increased dramatically in the last couple of decades.

“So we have an issue here where we have been feeding the world, but we're going to have to slowly but surely dampen down those exports,” Shellady said.

Poultry prices will be the first to rise because chickens and turkeys need only a few months to grow to market size, Volpe said. Beef and pork take longer, and the agency actually revised its beef price projection for 2012 downward because producers are sending more cattle to the market as they reduce their herds in response to the drought, he said.

Meat and poultry prices will be more affected than processed food prices because feed prices represent the biggest part of their cost of production. Processed food prices are less affected because corn and other ingredients typically make up just a fraction of their production costs compared with expenses such as transportation and marketing.

Food companies are already reacting, even turning abroad in some cases to blunt the impact of higher corn prices and tight supplies. Smithfield Foods Inc., the world's largest pork producer, has bought corn from Brazil, spokeswoman Keira Lombardo confirmed.

The drought is creating multiple problems for dairy farmers that consumers will eventually feel, said Ed Jesse, an emeritus professor of agricultural economics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Farmers have begun culling their herds, which will mean less milk down the line. Also, cows give less milk in that heat, and the milk they do produce is lower in proteins and butterfat, Jesse said. that means cheese and butter prices are going up because it takes more milk to produce the same amount.

Jesse predicted that milk prices for consumers will rise by 10 percent or more, and he expects those prices to stay high into next year until herds start to recover.

“I don't think farmers are in a very happy state right now,” he said.

Associated Press reporters Dinesh Ramde in Milwaukee and Sitthixay Ditthavong in Chicago contributed to this report.

15 Worst Celebrity Plastic Surgery Disasters – See Photos

By: , NewsOXY Reporter 06/18/2011 08:27 AM ET

These are the 15 worst celebrity plastic surgeries that have ended up being Hollywood disasters, with complete photos. It is known as the celebrity plastic surgery and it’s popular. this is why the famous are trying everything to stay beautiful because the famous stars need to look great at all times.

15 worst Celebrity Plastic Surgery DisastersKenny Rogers gambled and lost. “I’m not happy about it,” the country singer told People magazine in 2006 of a botched eyelid lift. With his tight eyelids, he no longer looks like the scruffy, masculine man we knew in the 70′s. he tops our celebrity plastic surgery list.

Joan Rivers admits to having had lots of procedures, including a facelift, neck lift, and an eyelid procedure. she makes no apologies for it either, although most of her fans say it’s a mess. some might say her “work” has been overdone. she ranks second on our list.

Surgery that involves facelift procedures have been around for years. For example, Barry Manilow had one facelift in 1995, another in 2003, and a third in 2006 – along with Botox injections. the singer also seems to have gotten cheek implants, as well as laser or chemical peel skin smoothing.

Burt Reynolds, the man People magazine once named “sexiest man alive,” is now a far cry from what he used to be since having the plastic procedure done. the actor appears to have had a browlift that pulled the eyebrows and an upper eyelid lift (upper blepharoplasty) as well as a facelift. the overall effect from the procedure is to make Reynolds appear almost feminine.

The sad part is, the procedure itself can become an addiction for any celebrity. We’ve seen that in cases of Michael Jackson and others. Once you have the procedure done, it’s too late to turn back.

True Sunscreen Secrets from the Experts (taken from the American Academy of Dermatology) «

Who needs sunscreens? Everyone! more than 2 million nonmelanoma skin cancers are diagnosed annually. many studies have found an association between sunburns and enhanced risk for melanoma. Sunlight consists of two types of harmful rays: ultraviolet a (UVA) rays and ultraviolet B (UVB) rays. UVA rays (which pass through window glass) penetrate deeper into the dermis, the thickest layer of the skin. UVA rays can cause suppression of the immune system, which interferes with the immune system’s ability to protect you against the development and spread of skin cancer. UVA exposure also is known to lead to signs of premature aging of the skin such as wrinkling and age spots. the UVB rays are the sun’s burning rays (which are blocked by window glass) and are the primary cause of sunburn.

A good way to remember it is that UVA rays are the aging rays and UVB rays are the burning rays. Excessive exposure to both forms of UV rays can lead to the development of skin cancer. Sunscreen should be applied every day to exposed skin, and not just if you are going to be in the sun. For days when you are going to be indoors, apply sunscreen on the areas not covered by clothing, such as the face and hands. Sunscreens can be applied under makeup, or alternatively, there are many cosmetic products available that contain sunscreens for daily use. Sun protection is the principal means of preventing premature aging and skin cancer. It’s never too late to protect yourself from the sun and minimize your future risk of skin cancer.

Don’t reserve the use of sunscreen only for sunny days. Even on a cloudy day, up to 80 percent of the sun’s ultraviolet rays can pass through the clouds. In addition, sand reflects 25 percent of the sun’s rays and snow reflects 80 percent of the sun’s rays.

Sunscreens should be applied to dry skin 15 to 30 minutes BEFORE going outdoors. When using sunscreen, be sure to apply it to all exposed areas and pay particular attention to the face, ears, hands, and arms. Coat the skin liberally and rub it in thoroughly — most people apply only 25 to 50 percent of the recommended amount of sunscreen. one ounce, enough to fill a shot glass, is considered the amount needed to cover the exposed areas of the body properly. Don’t forget that lips get sunburned, too, so apply a lip balm that contains sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Sunscreens should be reapplied approximately every two hours or after swimming or perspiring heavily. Even so-called “water-resistant” sunscreens may lose their effectiveness after 40 minutes in the water. Sunscreens rub off as well as wash off, so if you’ve towel-dried, reapply sunscreen for continued protection.

Also, there are a number of combination cosmetic products, such as moisturizers that contain sunscreen, but it is important to remember that these products also need to be reapplied to achieve continued UV protection. there are so many types of sunscreen that selecting the right one can be quite confusing. Sunscreens are available in many forms, including ointments, creams, gels, lotions, sprays, and wax sticks. the type of sunscreen you choose is a matter of personal choice. Creams are best for individuals with dry skin, but gels are preferable in hairy areas, such as the scalp or male chest. Sticks are good around the eyes. Creams typically yield a thicker application than lotions and are best for the face. there also are sunscreens made for specific purposes, such as sensitive skin and for use on babies.

Ideally, sunscreens should be water-resistant, so they cannot be easily removed by sweating or swimming, and should have an SPF of 30 or higher that provides broad-spectrum coverage against both UVA and UVB light. Unless indicated by an expiration date, the FDA requires that all sunscreens be stable and at their original strength for at least three years.

But what does SPF stands for? It stands for sun protection factor. Sunscreens are rated or classified by the strength of their SPF. the SPF numbers on the packaging can range from as low as 2 to greater than 50. These numbers refer to the product’s ability to deflect the sun’s burning rays (UVB). the sunscreen SPF rating is calculated by comparing the amount of time needed to produce a sunburn on sunscreen-protected skin to the amount of time needed to cause a sunburn on unprotected skin. For example, if a sunscreen is rated SPF 2 and a person who would normally turn red after 10 minutes of exposure in the sun uses it, it would take 20 minutes of exposure for the skin to turn red. a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 would allow that person to multiply that initial burning time by 15, which means it would take 15 times longer to burn, or 150 minutes. Even with this protection, sunscreen photo degrades (breaks down) and rubs off with normal wear, so it needs to be reapplied approximately every two hours. at present, there is no FDA-approved rating system that identifies UVA protection. UVB protection does not actually increase proportionately with a designated SPF number. For example, an SPF of 60 screens 98 percent of UVB rays, and an SPF of 30 screens 97 percent of UVB rays, whereas an SPF of 15 screens 93 percent of UVB rays, and an SPF of 2 screens 50 percent of UVB rays. In Europe, the COLIPA (European Cosmetics Association) method assigns a 50+ SPF for high protection sunscreens, regardless if they have a SPF of more than 50.  however, inadequate application of sunscreen may result in a lower SPF than the product contains. Whichever SPF you choose, wearing sunscreen should not provide a false sense of security about protection from UVB exposure. No sunscreen can provide 100 percent UVB protection. Using a higher SPF provides greater UVB protection than a lower SPF, but it does not mean that you should stay out in the sun longer.

Cassie Steele on Season 2 of ‘The L.A. Complex’ & Her Big Break

The L.a. Complex is getting even hotter now that season two has arrived. Star Cassie Steele, who plays aspiring actress Abby Vargas on the Canadian drama about the twentysomethings who inhabit a Los Angeles apartment building, recently spoke with me about what’s to come. “It’s a lot edgier than last year,” she said. “I’m looking forward to everyone’s reaction to it.”

Among the things Cassie has enjoyed about the second season are the arrival of new characters Beth (Dayle McLeod), Simon (Michael Levinson), Brandon (Brett Dier) and Laura (Megan Hutchings), as well as Abby’s being cast in a Christian TV series. She called the latter “really different from the other role that Abby had [in season one] which was the prostitute role. It’s kind of the polar opposite of that. I’d like to see Abby deal with a character that she wasn’t comfortable playing.”

The best perk of the job? “The people,” she said. “I’ve been working with some of the crew for most of my life, really, so over a decade. I really like that it’s kind of like my home away from home.”

While Abby continues to strive for her “big break,” Cassie shared with me what her own journey toward stardom was like. “I feel like I just fell into it [and] now I realize how lucky I was,” she explained. “I knew that I really liked acting and being on camera and singing. When I was growing up there wasn’t ever a point where I asked myself what I wanted to do in life. I never had that moment where I was worried about where I was going.” She eventually landed the role of Manny Santos on Degrassi: the Next Generation, as a regular through the show’s first nine seasons.

As for her major influences along the way, “My dad probably gave me the best advice growing up. I think it’s really just keeping your cool in situations and learning to balance everything.”

That ability to balance comes in handy as Cassie is not only an actress, but also a singer, having released two albums in 2005 and 2009, and an EP this April. “People ask me all the time which I would prefer doing more, but I honestly can’t say,” she confided. “When I’m filming, I’m like, ‘No, this is my favorite,’ and when I’m writing music and recording and performing, it’s like ‘This is definitely it.’”

Cassie’s career aspirations are the kind of thing Abby would be proud of: not looking toward grandeur but rather working with others who’ve been where she has been. While there are “so many” people she looks up to, “There’s so much undiscovered talent. I feel like everybody needs to have a chance,” she said. “I’m just looking forward to meeting new people.”

“I feel like my life is pretty much on display,” she added. “So much of it is working and that’s really all I want to do. I’m an open book.”

The L.a. Complex continues tonight at 9 PM ET/PT on the CW.
