A total of about 1200 patients were screened and 92 major operations were carried by the club’s team of doctors.

Amongst the operations carried out, Dr. Anil Tibrewala, Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon from Mumbai, carried out 48 major operations.

These included children with cleft lips and cleft palates, patients with extensive burns and post burns contractures, post traumatic deformities and large growths on various aspects of the body.

It was indeed heartening to see the smiles on these patients once their problems had been solved and they could go back home and live a normal healthy life.

Dr. Tibrewala has, for the last 15 years, given his time, expertise and knowledge to the poor and needy of our province and the Lions Club of Mombasa Bahari is indebted to him for helping the club alleviate the problems of these unfortunate patients.

It is amazing as to how, year after year, patients wait for him to come to Malindi so that they can be treated.

It is well known that people in the rural areas have many medical problems and yet they do not seek medical care and advice because they just cannot afford it.

Seeing these patients making an effort to come to the camp and seek medical help certainly makes one wonder as to why we cannot get together and provide expertise and help more frequently.

The club is very appreciative of Dr. Hatim Yusufali, a young and dynamic Consultant Eye Surgeon, who came and helped over 300 patients with various Eye ailments.

He successfully carried out 16 Cataract Surgeries during the camp.

The Medical committee of the club is very lucky to have as its members, doctors with diverse specialties.

This helps the club to treat patients with all types of conditions without any hitch.

Lion Dr. Mala Nyun, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, was really sought after by the large number of women who came to the camp.

She carried out five Hysterectomies and two Caesarian Sections during the camp.

Considering the fact that Health workers in all public hospitals were on strike and patients were being turned away from the hospitals, it was a wonderful feeling that we, as a club, could hellp deliver and thus save the lives of two new born babies who otherwise might not have survived.

As is the norm with every camp, hundreds of very poor patients with various surgical problems present themselves so that they can have their problems sorted out.

Though the hospital staff were on strike, Dr. Buni, Consultant Surgeon and Medical Superintendent of Malindi District Hospital, joined hands with us and carried out 21 operations.

Having carried out operative medical camps in the entire province for over 15 years, the Lions Club of Mombasa Bahari has been able to put together an entire mobile unit for such projects.

The club, besides having very dedicated members, is also privileged to have a very active team of doctors who are always ready to serve the community when called upon.

This has helped the club in carrying out medical camps all over our very vast province.

All camps carried out by the club are entirely free of cost and besides treating the patients in the public hospitals, even their food and welfare are looked after by the club.

Whilst the Medical Camp was in progress, the club’s Breast Cancer Awareness Committee conducted a series of lectures and demonstrations for the ladies.

On Friday afternoon, nearly 300 ladies from all walks of life assembled at Cleopatra Cinema to learn about Breast Cancer from Lion Dr. Mala and her team.

The ladies were so concerned that on Saturday 10th March, 85 ladies came to Taufiq Hospital, Malindi, where free Breast examinations were carried by the club.

Those who needed further advice were referred to Mombasa for more extensive investigations. Lions International District 411A District Governor Lion Murtaza Dungarwala witnessed the camp and the breast awareness activity on Friday 9th March 2012 and was full of praise for these activities.

The Lions Club of Mombasa Bahari is very grateful to Freight Forwarders Kenya Ltd. and Mabati Rolling Mills for their very generous sponsorship of this camp.

These included hernia repairs, hydrocoelectomies, stab wounds and excision of large lipomas.
