TIVA is administered entirely through the patient’s I.V. instead of general anesthesia, which is administered by anesthesia gas. TIVA allows for patient’s to be completely asleep for the entire surgery but with fewer unwanted side effects of general anesthesia. “TIVA allows for a faster recovery without as many side effects,” said Dr. Lapuerta.
