There are two basic kinds of rhinoplasty surgery available for patients who wish to improve the appearance and function of their noses. These are the open and closed techniques, with which only a small incision in the columella is the difference. The columella is the bit of skin that lies between both nostrils. The open operation is the method that makes a slit in this area to give the surgeon a better view of the tissue of the nose.
Care and Instructions
Doctors prescribe a fair amount of pain relievers, anti-inflammatory drugs and antibiotics for patients who have just undergone rhinoplasty surgery since swelling, some pain and discomfort are to be expected with this operation. it is best to follow the doctor’s instructions regarding how many antibiotics to take per day and how many days to take these since this is important and lowers the risk of an infection in the affected area. Pain killers should be taken if there is pain which one feels uncomfortable with. it is not advisable to let the pain become full blown before taking medication since it may take longer to take effect.
Swelling and bleeding are often alleviated by putting nasal packing in the nose. The packing helps but it can restrict the individual’s breathing or may induce a smothered feeling for many. The doctor may resort to putting a short straw through the packing to help with the breathing. This will be taken out in just a few days after the surgery so there are just a few days to bear with this inconvenience.
Another remedy for the swelling is the application of cold compresses or ice packs, although, some doctors do not like this due to the fact that it presses up against the nose. it may be best to be careful when applying the ice packs or cold compresses after rhinoplasty surgery.
Some nausea may occur within a day or two after the rhinoplasty surgery which may cause vomiting. Expect the vomit to be of a dark color since there may be some blood swallowed or maybe some other color due to the anesthetic or sedative. many people are frightened by the bruising that comes after the nose job, so it is best to expect the worst from one’s appearance. The sutures and cast which are often used post operative can come off after a few days. Tapes are also used afterwards to help with the swelling.
In all, recovery may be an ordeal but tolerable for many. it is a good idea to follow doctor’s instructions and to always ask before doing anything which is not included in them.
