Cosmetic Surgery Addiction

Dr. Robert Guida, a Manhattan Facial Cosmetic Surgeon at the new York Center for Plastic Surgery, describes the symptoms and treatments for plastic surgery addiction.

People who have a serious addiction to cosmetic surgery often have extremely poor body images, or Body Dysmorphic Disorder. Dr. Guida explains the warning signs, symptoms, and treatment for this type of addiction.

The Warning Signs of an Addiction to Plastic Surgery

Two warning signs of cosmetic surgery addiction are: 1) unrealistic expectations; and 2) a refusal to listen to what their surgeon advises.

“if a person is satisfied after a surgery or two, that’s normal,” says Dr Guida. “I understand that a lot of people have poor self images. But, it becomes an addiction if they have plastic surgery procedures over and over, often to the point of making their appearance look worse instead of better. Patients who understand that perfection cannot be achieved display a more normal behavior, and are usually satisfied with their appearance.”

Symptoms of Cosmetic Surgery Addiction

Dr Guida lists the following as symptoms of addiction to plastic surgery:

  • Countless cosmetic surgeries, either on the same body part or on different body parts.
  • Obsession with a very minor defect not noticeable to others.
  • Obsession with a specific body part or parts of an admired celebrity or model.
  • Extremely unrealistic expectations (very difficult to please as patients).
  • Refusal to listen to the advice of a cosmetic surgeon when he/she advises them that further plastic surgery is unnecessary and will not help – or will do more harm than good.

"Patients who do not have addictions are satisfied when they walk away after surgery. Addicts think just one more procedure (and then another, and another, and another) will make them look perfect,” he says.

Treatment for Cosmetic Surgery Addiction

The best treatment for an addiction to cosmetic surgery – especially if it’s a result of Body Dysmorphic Disorder – is therapy. “Cognitive behavior therapy in particular has shown to decrease symptoms,” says Dr. Guida. “Another treatment sometimes used is Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors, a medication that increases the level of serotonin in the brain. People who want to get help and who want to understand why they keep going back for more surgery are most likely to benefit from therapy. Their surgeon or primary care physician can refer them to a psychologist.”

If patients become obsessive and addicted to treatments Dr. Guida deems unnecessary, he stops treating them. He’ll refer them to psychiatrists, since it’s a mental health issue. if he senses that a new patient is already addicted to cosmetic surgery and seeking unrealistic perfection, he declines treatment or surgery right off the bat.

7 Reasons to Dump Your TV

posted by LearnVest on may 17, 2012in Music and Video, News, TVs & Video Players, iPhone/iPad Apps, Blog :: 0 comments

By Alden Wicker, LearnVest

LearnVest Assistant Editor Alden Wicker explains why she decided to chuck her TV, how it’s improved her life and finances for the better, and why you should, too.

I am completely over TV. in fact, not only is TV useless, I would rank it right up there between “binge drinking on a twice-weekly basis” and “addiction to plastic surgery” on a list of habits that will ruin your finances.

And maybe your life.

This, in a nutshell, is why, in the year 2012, I don’t own a television set.

Listen, I know it’s hard to conceptualize giving up “Revenge” once you’ve developed relationships with the characters. or to conceive of what sick days would be like without the comforting routine of “Family Feud.” I’ll admit that good television has the power to educate us, teach us truths about ourselves and help us bond with co-workers over last night’s shocking plot turn.

But trust me, even though there can be benefits, you’ll still be better off without the flickering box in your life. I am. Here’s why:

Let’s start with the most obvious point.

We get so many smart, capable, successful women writing in asking for help getting their finances on track. They want to save for retirement, pay off their credit card debt or see a concert with their friends once in a while, but can’t seem to make room in their budget. meanwhile, they’re pitching $20 (if they have roommates) to $100 toward cable TV every month.

Let’s say, starting at 25, that you cut out cable and put the money the average American spends on cable a year ($900+) into a Roth IRA with an average return of 7%. by age 65, you would have more than $190,000. maybe you should throw in the $250 you would pay for a new TV every few years too! Clearly, cancelling your cable could start you on the road to financial health.

And let’s be real. if you are in serious credit card debt, you need to re-prioritize. Period.

Hanging out with rich people makes our own lives seem poorer. And if you’re watching TV, you’re basically hanging out with rich people–especially if your shows of choice are “Sex and the City” re-runs, “Gossip Girl” or any of the various cities and their Housewives. It’s easy to come to believe, like Carrie Bradshaw, that Manolo Blahniks are necessary for every woman, and you may decide to make it happen for yourself with the help of your credit card. Bad news. Fictional TV characters don’t pay rent or have student loans—and they certainly never go into debt as a result of their actions.

Take this quiz to find out if you’ve got a case of money comparisonitis.

It’s not only the shows. by age 65, the average American watches two million commercials–commercials that are designed to make your life seem dull in comparison to those of the shiny, happy people cruising around in Lexuses. U.S. companies invest $70 billion each year in television advertising and they must be getting their money’s worth. if you’ve ever found yourself craving a cheeseburger with a cold soda, perhaps you might consider removing commercials—and the craving for said cheeseburger– from your life.

Talk about living her richest life. our Senior Editor, Laura, hasn’t watched TV in 20 years, and she’s living proof that cutting TV cold turkey will improve your happiness. since college, she’s become a certified yoga instructor, picked up Italian and become an advanced Argentine tango dancer (while also becoming proficient at salsa, merengue, ballroom and swing). she makes almost all of her presents every Christmas, cooks dinner on weeknights that she doesn’t go out, regularly attends concerts and still finds time outside of work to blog three to six times a week and dance the weekend away with friends. she can also, depending on her schedule, work her way through a book per week.

On the other hand, the average American watches 35.6 hours of television a week. That’s a full-time job!

What would you do with over 30 extra hours a week?

TV is not an inherently social activity, even if you’re watching it with someone. sure, you’re sitting in the same room, but instead of learning about each other and really bonding, you’re exchanging quips about reality-television freakouts in between commercials.

One event that compels Laura and me to make time for TV? Sporting events. we like to watch a good World Cup match, the occasional football game or the Olympics. but because Laura and I don’t even have TVs, we need to go out to watch them. “for the World Cup, we’ll pick a bar or restaurant where there will be a big fan scene, like an Italian restaurant for an Italian game,” Laura says. this places her and her friends in the middle of a raucous crowd where they can meet people from all over the world.

And if you don’t have friends you can bring along to watch your sporting event? Well, you should be out there making some–not sitting in front of your TV.

I had a roommate who would stagger out of her room every morning, declaring, “I am so tired. I can barely function.” she was so zonked because she felt the need to catch up on at least three television shows every night, keeping her up past midnight. She’s not an exception. the average American gets a little less than seven hours of sleep on weeknights, but wishes she could get more. just cutting one hour of TV a day is enough to make up the difference.

Sleep is essential for performing at your best at work. in fact, researchers have compared running on little sleep to being drunk. Even the wildly successful Arianna Huffington makes sleep her first priority. more success comes from more sleep … and less TV.

When I was in high school, my mom and I would settle in on weeknights to watch “Law & Order.” During that hour of gruesome crime-solving, I would almost always find myself munching on something—chips, pretzels, dessert, whatever. I felt so gross after mindlessly shoveling half a bag of processed food into my mouth, but this habit continued into adulthood, when I would take my breakfast or dinner over to the coffee table to eat in front of the news. now that I don’t have a TV, I don’t eat mindlessly anymore, and I believe it’s one reason I’ve settled back into a healthy weight. in fact, females who watch three to four hours of TV a day have almost twice the prevalence of obesity.

Not watching TV could bring two other health benefits. First, it can give you time to cook dinner, which is good for your waistline and your wallet. second, it may give you a long life: Sitting too much actually shortens your life span, so after a day at the office in front of the computer, the last thing you should do is fling yourself on the couch for five hours. Instead, use that time to hit the gym, take a walk or even wrestle with your dog (or toddler).

So to summarize, throwing your TV unceremoniously out the window (or donating it or trading it in) will improve your social life, whittle your waistline, give you time to learn new things, and drastically improve your finances.

I wish transforming your life were always this simple.

Could a plastic eating fungi save world from biggest man-made environmental catastrophe?

PUBLISHED:

03:00 EST, 18 may 2012

|UPDATED:

10:42 EST, 18 may 2012

The world’s addiction to plastic packaging and products threatens to choke many of the eco-systems that life relies on for survival.

The usually synthetic material, which is most commonly made from petrochemicals, degrades very slowly because it’s complex chemical bonds make it resistant to natural processes of decomposition.

Since the 1950s, one billion tons of plastic are thought to have been discarded – and the waste may persist for hundreds or even thousands of years.

Rubbish: A team from Yale University has found a fungus that could be used to break down certain kinds of plastic, raising hopes more could be discovered in the future

However, U.S. researchers now believe that a fungus could be used to break down plastic, and so rescue the world from one of its biggest man-made environmental threats.

A group of students from Yale University, Connecticut, have found a fungus in the Amazon rainforest that can break down the common plastic polyurethane.

One of the most widely used plastics, the global consumption of polyurethane raw materials in 2007 was above 12million tons, with an average annual growth rate in its use of about 5 per cent.

As part of Yale’s Rainforest Expedition and Laboratory educational programme, the researchers scoured the Ecuadorian rainforest for plants and cultured the micro-organisms within their tissue.

Example of PUR-A plates initially used to screen for polyurethane-degrading activity after 2 weeks of fungal growth. (A) Negative control. (B) Pleosporales sp. strain E2705B

Writing in the journal Applied and Environmental Microbiology, they say: ‘Endophytes were isolated from plant stems collected in the Ecuadorian rainforest.

‘A subset of these organisms was screened for their ability to degrade polyurethane. several active organisms were identified, including two distinct isolates of Pestalotiopsis microspora with the ability to efficiently degrade and utilize PUR as the sole carbon source when grown anaerobically.’

Endophytes are micro-organisms that live within the inner tissues of plants, but do not cause any noticeable disease symptoms in their hosts.

They often play a key role in the decomposition of the plants after death, but never before have they been tested for their ability to degrade synthetic materials.

The Amazon: The Yale researchers said further exploration could reveal more miracle metabolisers that could potentially be used to degrade other kinds of plastics

The authors of the study hold out hope that further exploration of properties of endophytes could reveal more miracle metabolisers that could potentially be used to degrade other kinds of plastics.

‘Each of the more than 300,000 land plant species on Earth potentially hosts multiple endophyte species,’ they write.

‘Only a small sampling of plants have been examined for their endophytic associations, yet many of these organisms can be readily cultured.

‘Endophytes reach their greatest diversity in tropical forests. Individual trees can harbor hundreds of endophytic species, some of which are known but many of which are new to science.’

Ursula, co2 is not a problem. Plastic will always be a bigger issue than co2. The earth is self regulating for the most part. it copes with co2 very easily. CO2 does not stay in the atmosphere indefinitely.

I recall reading several years ago about a Canadian teen who figured this out in a science project at school, using far less exotic bacteria. The Yale students are a bit late.also, the headline here is a clear example of journalistic malpractice (think about it).

Bits of plastic bobing around in the sea or here and there on the land don’t really do an aweful lot but sit there. I am sure some small creatures use this stuff as habitat. Better a billion tonnes of solid plastic than another billion tons of CO2 in the air dug up out of the ground and burnt by us :/ We use 20 million tons of coal and 100 million barels of oil every day and set fire to it with a match and watch it go up in smoke, plus chop down lots of rainforest every year to grow plants to make ‘environmentaly friendly’ packaging material. When you burn a ton of coal / oil it becomes 3 or 4 times that weight in CO2 because it combines with the oxygen in the air to make the gas.

Demi Lovato Bravely Admits She’s Still Struggling with Self-Harm and Bulimia

We’re used to celebrities offering juicy, candid titbits from their lives when they’re promoting a movie or otherwise want some press, but Demi Lovato took things to a whole new level by dropping a major truth bomb during last night’s Stay Strong special — namely that she still struggles with self-harm and bulimia. “I cannot tell you that I have not thrown up since treatment. I cannot tell you that I have not cut myself since treatment. I’m not perfect,” she said. Undergoing treatment in 2010, the singer recalls looking in the mirror and not liking what she saw, adding that as recently as Thanksgiving she was on the phone to her sponsor so that she wouldn’t throw up the meal. “An addiction is an obsession, something that takes over your mind and your every thought,” she said. “You think that you can’t live without it. for me, it was not eating and purging and self-harming.” Kudos for being brave enough to share, but let’s hope she’s getting all the help she needs. Struggling with an eating disorder isn’t the easiest thing in the world. But you know what’s worse? Being outed for having one publicly at the age of 14, according to Christina Ricci. “Somebody actually found out about it and outed me while I was recovering,” she said. “It was a horrifying thing to do to a 14-year-old trying to cope with a devastating illness.” I’ll bet. [Radar] Christina also says she wouldn’t be 20 again if you paid her, likening the period to being in a “hurricane.” I totally co-sign that, being in your 20s is the worst. [US]

Sorry to be the one to break it to you, but approximately 99.3 per cent of stories written about Jennifer Aniston aren’t actually true. however, news of her losing herself in a relationship to the detriment of her female friendships sounds plausible – but maybe because we’ve been conditioned to think about her in such a way. Anywhocares, Courteney Cox is allegedly pissed because of it. “Jennifer’s priorities have obviously changed since meeting Justin,” says someone. “But Courteney must feel that Jen has completely forgotten what it’s like to be the single girl and that will hurt given how supportive she and David were to Jen over the years.” [Daily Mail] maybe Courteney can hang out with David Arquette again now that he’s broken up with his girlfriend. Research – Impaired vision assisted by shooters

Sun, Feb 19, 2012 | 23:36 GMT

Playing shooters can help correct impaired vision, a Canadian research team has found.

AFP reports a McMaster University study asked six patients aged between 19 and 31, all with a rare eye disorder, to play Medal of Honor for 40 hours, in two hour bursts on five days each week.

At the conclusion of the trial, the patients showed eyesight improvement equivalent to reading two extra lines on an eye chart. some reached 20/20 vision, having started between 20/32 and 20/100, and were better at recognising faces, reading small print and judging the direction of moving dots.

Speaking at the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Vancouver, lead investigator Daphne Maurer said she was a bit cagey about violent games and the potential for addiction, but that the results were worth it.

“about two-thirds of the things we measured improved simply from playing an action videogame. I think it tells us that the visual nervous system is still plastic enough to either form or reveal connections in adulthood, and we suspect that might be true for any kind of visual defect,” she said.

Mauer said that shooters increase levels of dopamine and adrenaline in players’ brains – which may prime it for improvements.

“It is also called adrenaline for action, because you not only have to make a judgment based on what is going on on the screen but you have to act on it and you have to act on it from a real world perspective. So we think the manufacturers built into these games the effective ingredients for retraining the visual brain in adulthood,” she said.

Her team, in collaboration with others, is now working on building a non-violent game with the same qualities.

Mauer didn’t say whether shooters are likely to improve vision in general; the patients involved in the study had been born with cataracts in both eyes, requiring surgery and glasses or contacts, and temporarily lost eyesight at a very young age, leaving them with impaired vision in adulthood.

How to Detect a Person That is Addicted to Plastic Surgery

Plastic surgery offers people the chance to improve features they do not like, look younger or add to a feature they like about themselves. However, when plastic surgery becomes an addiction, it can be very damaging to the person who is addicted. many times people who have this problem are unable to stop themselves from getting more plastic surgery than is necessary, so it is up to family members and doctors to watch for the signs.

Examples of Plastic Surgery Addiction

There are both well-known and lesser-known examples of plastic surgery addiction among celebrities and socialites today. One notable example that most people know about (and consider an addicted person) is Michael Jackson. another notable example is Cindy Jackson. Cindy Jackson is also known as the human Barbie doll. she has had over 47 plastic surgery procedures and has significantly altered her appearance over the years to look more like Barbie.

One of the most infamous individuals who seems addicted to plastic surgery is the socialite Jocelyn Wildenstein. she is famous for getting repeated surgeries to look like a large cat. she has even noted that recent surgeries to expand her cheekbone area have caused limitations to her peripheral vision.

What causes Plastic Surgery Addiction?

The underlying disease which doctors think is the cause of most plastic surgery addictions is called Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD). BDD is a psychological disorder which causes individuals afflicted by it to consider themselves, or part of their bodies, to be ugly or deformed. this disease is considered to be closely related to excessive compulsive disorder and anorexia.

Sadly, regardless of how many plastic surgeries a person afflicted with this disorder receives, they do not see their body image as improving. As this is a psychological disorder, it cannot be treated through cosmetic surgery and must be treated with help from a psychologist.

What to look For

There are several things that family members and doctors can look for when trying to identify a person that has an addiction to plastic surgery, or the underlying disorder of BDD. First of all, a person with these types of afflictions will have a very negative opinion of how they look and low self-esteem. this negative opinion does not seem to improve even with reassurances from those around them. this obsession is also long-lasting.

Another sign of these disorders is the vast number of surgeries the person wants to get or has received in the past. He or she may also have very unrealistic views of what plastic surgery can do and may be very disappointed in the results after the plastic surgery has been completed.

A person who is afflicted with BDD may also have a difficult time leaving his or her home or feeling comfortable in social gatherings. The person will likely have an obsession that people are looking at the physical trait or traits person is paranoid about.

How to Detect a Person That is Addicted to Plastic Surgery

Celebrity Plastic Surgery Fails

The artificial world of Hollywood supports many excesses, not least of which is the slice, dice and suture mania of pursuing perfection through plastic surgery. you knew all those incredible bodies and faces didn’t come by natural means. they require lots of dedication, hard work and a downright addiction to pain. Michael Jackson’s famous disaster is probably the best-known example of habitual tinkering gone awry. He wasn’t alone in his obsession.

Reality star Heidi Montag, who appeared on “the Hills” once entered into a remodeling marathon and had a total of 10 procedures completed in a single day. She said that she “obviously” wishes she hadn’t done that. it isn’t hard to imagine why that would be her response. Recovery time for breast implants alone might have given her pause. What is hard to imagine is why anyone would voluntarily undertake such an ordeal.

Fresh-faced and lovely Meg Ryan could make anyone believe in romance. She was born Margaret Mary Emily Anne Hyra. OK, the name is a bit cumbersome, so changing that was probably a good thing. but changing that lovely face might have been a mistake. Much speculation, especially about lip “enhancement” that doesn’t really enhance, follows the actress. She makes no comment.

1980s heart throb Mickey Rourke made the colossal error of going into boxing after a successful stint of producing movies, the best of the bunch being “Angel Heart” and “Barfly.” He had some successes, but four years of boxing left him with significant facial injuries to his nose and cheek, plus some short-term memory loss. before returning to Hollywood in 1995, Rourke underwent surgery to repair some of the damage. Sadly, the work was botched. He later described his face as “appallingly disfigured.” He once mentioned that he should have taken his grandmother’s saying about God having a plan for everyone more seriously. “my plan sucked,” he commented.

Are you able to move your forehead? Nicole Kidman, whose delicate, elegant looks carried her into movies where her acting talent came to the fore, could not do that after several treatments with Botox. She admitted this in an interview for a German magazine called “TV Movie.” the Australian actress now vows to age gracefully instead.

Rumor has it that Fergie, the Black Eyed Peas singer who recently appeared on “American Idol” underwent several procedures. She denies the whole thing. Husband Josh Duhamel attributes the rumor to the imagination of pop writers and the public.

Rapper and singer Lil Kim seems willing to reveal everything to the public except her affair with plastic surgery. She is suspected of having breast augmentation, cheek implants, skin bleaching and several nose jobs. Born in Brooklyn as Kimberly Denise Jones, she lived on the streets as a teenager and began her career as a member of Junior M.A.F.I.A. A 2005 stint in jail didn’t slow her down much. Maybe she used it as recovery time from breast implants.

Who could forget Material Girl? Madonna’s “pillow face,” apparently the result of too many injections of filler material to stave off the effects of aging, recently became the topic of discussion at the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons Annual Scientific Meeting. Doctors were talking about new procedures they hope will avoid this unfortunate result. Called lipomodelling, the technique relies on use of the body’s own fat, refined and injected into deeper tissues of the face.

The lesson seems obvious, though perhaps hard to take. Appreciate what nature gave you and be proud of the evidence that you have lived long enough to earn those wrinkles and bumps.
