I’m with you TWG, except I don’t think you take it far enough!
Why even limit it to toys that have such deep psychological trauma on our kids. Personally I think that every Olympic athlete (well, maybe not some of the women water polo players and virtually all the weightlifting and shotput contestants of either gender) should be ASHAMED of the unrealistic expectations they are putting on a generation of children, adolescents, and adults who like to sit on the couch and watch TV and eat potato chips. I mean, I agree with TWG that FICTIONAL characters just like GI JOE, Christian Gray, and Lara Croft is a great start as to why our kids may have body image issues.
I mean, afterall, to suggest it’s not the fault of the manufacturers of these toys would just leave parents on the hook for providing a responsible and nurturing environment to avoid those issues. and parent accountability is just CRAZY TALK.
So KUDOS to you TWG, except I say you should really get DARING now and focus on the real culprits here. Let’s go after the real folks who are so surreptitiously ingraining us with self loathing….professional athletes like the Olympians have NO RIGHT to cut me so deep by exercising and training for 10 – 12 hours a day to acheive perfect physiques that would even make toys like Barbie, and Buzz Lightyear, and Woody would be envious of (if they actually had thoughts, which they don’t, because they’re not real). I just don’t have 10-12 hours a day to train, so what jerks they are for being able to and giving me an unrealistic idea of what I could look like if I did.
Two survivors of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima shared their horrific experiences with a Dunedin audience yesterday in the hope it would spread a message of peace and ensure it never happens again.
Shigeko Niimoto Sasamori was aged 13 and Michimasa Hirata 9 years old when the United States dropped the atomic bomb from 31,000ft on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945.
on that morning, Ms Sasamori, along with other high-school pupils, was preparing to help clear escape routes in case of a fire bombing when she looked into a clear blue sky and saw an American plane.
she pointed it out to her classmate.
“I called her to look up at the plane.
“At the same time I pointed up to the sky … I saw the plane drop a white thing.
“At almost the same time there was very, very strong forces; I can’t explain how strong it was,” she told about 150 people at a public lecture at the University of Otago yesterday.
she was knocked out by the blast and left with third-degree burns to 25% of her body.
When she awoke, she followed a group of adults who were slowly walking away from ground zero, encountering many people dead or with horrific burns along the way.
“Everyone was hurt,” she said.
she made it to a school auditorium, where she spent five days before being taken home by her mother.
in 1955, she went to the United States, where she received extensive plastic surgery to repair the damage caused by the atomic bomb.
“She now lives in California.
Ms Sasamori pleaded with the Dunedin audience to help make sure there were “no more Hiroshima, no more Nagasaki; no more Hibakusha (the Japanese word for atomic-bomb survivors)”.
she said living in new Zealand did not mean you could “relax”, as nine countries still had nuclear weapons and many still had nuclear power.
Mr Hirata, who was with his family when the bomb fell, said more than 17,000 nuclear warheads were still in existence.
“You can imagine 17,000 nuclear weapons can easily extinguish the Earth,” he said.
Speaking to the Otago Daily Times, he said he became involved in the antinuclear movement when he was 55 after seeing a work colleague – who he had not known was also a survivor – taking part in a march for nuclear abolition.
Before that, like many Hibakusha, he had kept quiet about his experience for fear of encountering discrimination because of the effects radiation had on survivors.
Ms Sasamori and Mr Hirata will be guest speakers at a commemorative peace vigil at the International Peace Pole at the Otago Museum Reserve at noon tomorrow.
the pair’s visit to Dunedin is part of a nationwide tour to commemorate the 67th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Atomic bomb

the bomb killed about 70,000 people immediately.
about 140,000 people estimated to have died by the end of 1945.
Three days after Hiroshima, an atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, killing about 70,000.
on August 15, six days after the bombing of Nagasaki, Japan announced its surrender to the Allies, ending World War 2.
If you feel that your ears are a bit too conspicuous, maybe you could do with help from plastic surgery; to be more specific, from otoplasty or ear surgery. one of the best things about otoplasty is that it is safer when compared to many other plastic surgery methods.

Children with big or protruding ears are often victims of teasing at school. if your child experiences the same problem; correcting the problem through otoplasty may be a wise decision so that he/she doesn’t have to endure psychological trauma. Otoplasty operations are mostly performed on children aged between 4 and 14 years. However, it is not uncommon for adults to undergo the procedure.

A Deeper look into Otoplasty
A common way of doing otoplasty is to make a little incision at the rear side of the ear, in the fold where it joins the head. In so doing, the ear cartilage is exposed. Following the making of the incision, cartilage or skin may be removed, or the cartilage would be reduced and reshaped. so, if the ears extend out considerably from the head, they can be pinned back and if they are big, they can be brought down to the right size. using permanent stitches, the cartilage is fixed in its new place. The surgery usually causes faint scarring but this would lighten with time.
Otoplasty is as mentioned at the outset, a safe procedure. However complications such as a blood clot, overcorrection, hematoma, infection, and altered hearing may occur in rare cases.

Gynecomastia is an abnormal enlargement of the male breasts. This condition can affect both children and adults. Though this condition is not physically harmful per se, in most cases; however, it can be an indicator of other more serious underlying conditions.
A lot of studies have been made to determine the cause of gynecomastia. Though nothing has been conclusive, it is generally attributed to hormonal imbalance, excessive weight gain, or medication.
The treatment would vary depending on the cause of the condition. Majority of adolescent boys go through this condition because of hormone fluctuations. normally this condition doesn’t need to get treated since it goes away within 3 years or less. however, it would be best to see a doctor to assess your breast size as well as other underlying factors of the sudden breast growth. By doing so, the condition will be attended to before it could cause serious medical problem.
If the problem is due to hormones, the doctor could recommend hormone-suppressants or give you other medications to stabilize the hormone causing the problem (in most cases, increase levels of estrogen causes hormone-related gynecomastia). as for adolescents, doctors would usually advise you to let your body do the work in stabilizing such hormone as this condition is usually fixed naturally.
On the other hand, if the condition is caused by excessive weight gain, as most of the cases are, a health professional will recommend you to undergo a weight loss program. Weight loss program for treating gynecomastia includes fat-burning exercises like treadmills, elliptical trainers, stationary bikes, and other machines that could bring your heart rate up to the fat burning zone. after that, you will be advised to go on muscle-toning exercises, particularly on the muscles of the chest.
If the condition is due to medications, you will be advised to stop the medication if possible. if not, the doctor could prescribe an alternative drug or just wait for the course to finish and deal with the problem later.
If all things failed or you simply just want to get a faster result, plastic surgery is always an option. But before deciding to go under the knife, it would be best to seek for a professional advice first.
There are two methods for this treatment: liposuction and excision (gynecosmastia surgery). Before there was liposuction, the only solution for gynecomastia was to cut the excess tissue which is known as excision, usually through a small incision of the areola. This procedure is ideal when there is a well defined gynecomastia mass under the areola but not when the fat is spread across the chest. Hence, liposuction became the answer. Liposuction is ideal for reducing fat, because fat is soft and can easily be removed.
Summer often means lots of outdoors fun on area lakes for Austinites. But for others folks, these hot “dog days of summer” can mean something completely different as dog bite incidents tend to increase during summer months.
Dr. Adam Weinfeld is a plastic surgeon who sees more dog bites during the summer.
“It’s not suprising at all — we certainly notice an increasing number of consults in the emergency room, children that have been injured in dog bites,” he said.
Weinfeld added that children are often more likely than adults to become victims of bites often because they’re exposed to them more.
“They’re outside more often certainly because they’re not in school during the summer so they have more unsupervised time alongside of dogs,” Weinfeld said.
A nonprofit organization called “Prevent a Bite” said children are three times more likely than adults to get bit. Add that with The American Society of Plastic Surgeons reporting 29,000 reconstructive surgeries last year due to dog bites nationwide.
It is a statistic that attorney Len Gabbey sees play out regularly during the summer.
“Infants and toddlers are more at risk,” Gabbey said. “They are at an eye level that is more akin to a dog’s eye level, which can be seen as threatening to a dog. when you have kids over at friends’ homes, for example, sleepovers during the summertime with their friends or barbecues, when you’re just not doing that except in the summertime.”
Healthcare professionals said if you have a dog keep it on a leash. If you’re out somewhere and the dogs are running around loose, watch your distance from the animal. You don’t want to fall victim to another dog bite.
EDISON, NEW JERSEY – some children and adults suffer from ears that protrude significantly from the sides of the head, making the ears appear larger than they really are.
If you or your child suffers from this condition, ear surgery – also known as otoplasty – may be the answer. This surgery can pin back the ears, reshape them, reduce their size or make them more symmetrical.
“Ears that stick out or are misshaped can be a great source of self-consciousness for many people,” said Dr. Andrew Miller, an otoplasty specialist in New Jersey. “Fortunately, this procedure can be performed in patients from the age of 6 to adulthood.”
For those wondering how otoplasty can change the way they look, they need to first understand how the surgery is performed and what they can expect from this procedure.
Surgery can treat:
Overly large ears
Protruding ears on one or both sides with varying degrees
Adult unhappiness with previous ear surgery
You will meet with an NJ facial plastic surgeon before undergoing the procedure. during this consultation, the surgeon will examine your ears, discuss your goals and review your medical history. he or she will also take your age, skin type and feelings toward surgery into consideration when deciding whether an otoplasty is right for you. The surgery process, required anesthesia and the surgical facility, along with risks and the costs involved, will be discussed and any questions you have will be addressed.
Adults should understand that the firmer cartilage of their fully developed ears does not provide the same molding capacity as in children. for children, the earlier the better is the general rule for two reasons: the cartilage is extremely flexible and the child will experience psychological benefits from the cosmetic procedure.
“Children are the ones who suffer the cruel nicknames in school, which is why we recommend they have the surgery as soon as their ears are fully developed,” said tummy tuck NJ expert, Dr. Miller. “Aside from the aesthetic benefits, parents tend to see their child’s behavior change and their outlook improve as soon as they are healed.”
How the surgery is performed
Using IV sedation, the patient is put to sleep for one and a half hours.
An incision is made behind the ear.
The cartilage is reshaped with sutures to hold the new shape. sometimes cartilage is removed.
Sutures are placed to position the ear closer to the head.
The incision is closed with sutures.
A dressing is placed over the ears.
Some adults may choose to have this surgery in conjunction with other facial plastic surgery procedures, such as a nose job.
Post SurgeryThe dressings will remain applied to the ears for a few days. Most patients experience mild discomfort, which is easily controlled with pain medication. Patients who are accustomed to sleeping on their side will experience a disruption in sleep pattern, as they cannot put any pressure on the ears for a week or so. The expected recovery time is one week.
“This surgery is quick and easy and results are immediate,” said Dr. Miller, who offers New Jersey breast augmentation and rhinoplasy. “By changing how the ears look, patients can in turn change the way they feel about themselves, which is why this surgery is so great for young children.”
The risk of endometrial cancer is strongly associated with obesity says a new Scientific Impact Paper (SIP) launched today at the 10th RCOG International Scientific Congress in Malaysia.
In the UK, obesity now affects 25% of adults and approximately 50% of endometrial cancers are linked to obesity, says the paper produced by the RCOG’s Scientific Advisory Committee.
Standard treatment for endometrial cancer is surgery, however, there are problems with preoperative assessment of obese women and surgery itself poses its own challenges and risks, warns the paper.
An MRI scan is often used for assessment of endometrial cancer but many scanners have a weight limit which prohibits scanning morbidly obese patients, says the paper.
Laparoscopic surgery is the best approach in order to minimise postoperative wound complications and minimise the time spent in hospital. however any surgery is challenging and doctors should undergo further training in operative techniques to enhance their skills, the paper recommends. the paper calls for gynaecological cancer centres to offer expertise in surgery for morbidly obese women for their networks.
The paper also explores other methods of treatment apart from surgery including progestagens, which can be used for low grade endometrial cancer. however, there are no large case series reporting on the outcome of using progestagens as a primary treatment and the long-term outcome is unclear, say the authors.
In addition, the paper says that endometrial cancer is radiosensitive and radiotherapy may be used as a sole treatment.
Cancer prevention is also explored and the authors state that the growing evidence base suggests that obesity not only has a negative impact on cancer related outcomes but also on women’s global well being.
The RCOG’s recent report ‘High Quality Women’s Health Care: A proposal for change’ supports this view and calls for a life course approach to be adopted to improve women’s health.
Dr Pierre Martin-Hirsch, Consultant, Gynaecological Oncology Unit, Royal Preston Hospital, Lancashire, Dr Sadaf Ghaem-Maghami, Gynaecological Oncology Centre, Imperial College London, both co-authors of the SIP paper, say:
“Obesity is a serious public health issue. Weight management and the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle should be topics discussed with patients who are being treated for endometrial cancer.
“With the increasing number of morbidly obese patients, more thought needs to be given to investment in training of surgeons in appropriate technologies such as laparoscopic and plastic surgical techniques when treating endometrial cancer.”

About new RCOG Scientific Impact Papers
RCOG Scientific Impact Papers (formerly SAC Opinion papers) are produced by the Scientific Advisory Committee. they are up to date reviews of emerging or controversial scientific issues of relevance to obstetrics and gynaecology, together with the implications for future practice. these documents have been rebranded to raise awareness of the issues in obstetrics and gynaecology discussed in the documents and to more accurately reflect their content and remit of the Committee.
This new brand of RCOG documents have been launched on 6 June 2012 at the 10th RCOG International Scientific Congress in Malaysia.
When some people think of plastic surgery, in their minds it’s something that is appropriate only for adults. others believe it is bad altogether and there’s never a good reason to get this type of procedure. however, both of these ways of thinking are not always true. Plastic surgery can be very beneficial even for teens. Now, this may seem like a far out statement, but it’s really not. there are several reasons why it would be appropriate for a teen to get certain types of procedures such as having work done on their breasts. It wouldn’t necessarily be because there’s an issue with them being too small. however, the problem comes in when their breasts are actually too big. this can cause many different issues for them.
For instance, a teenager who has an extremely chest would have trouble finding clothing. most of the clothes that are made for teens aren’t made to fit people with excessively large top areas. Although they may fit a shirt correctly around the stomach, the top part may end up being extremely too small for them. Instances like these can cause a lot of problems, making it almost impossible for them to find suitable clothes. this is a big deal, especially at their age because they are already dealing with peer pressure. so, to not be able to find the appropriate outerwear can make things much worse for them.
Plastic surgery in this case is also important because of the ridicule they would have to endure. Teens and children can be harsh. they tease, make rude comments and even bully. so, having to go to school with extremely large breasts can be tormenting. Teenagers shouldn’t have to deal with that extra peer pressure or the extra possibility of being laughed at, when there is a surgical method that can help make their chest area the normal average size for a person their age.
More importantly than having to worry about being teased and not being able to find clothing, is helping to prevent the back issues that can be caused by this issue. when a grown women, for example, has very large breasts, they complain of back issues and back pain. so, many women of them decide to get the breast reduction procedure to help alleviate the extra weight. the additional weight would be even harder on a teen who is usually much shorter and much smaller.
So, the back problems would probably be much worse for them because they are so young.
Plastic surgery isn’t something that should be seen as taboo. however, it can provide extremely great benefits to many women, but especially those who are in their teenage years.
MONDAY, April 16 (HealthDay News) — the number of American women and men having cosmetic chin surgery increased drastically in 2011, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
The growth in chin augmentation procedures was greater than breast augmentation, Botox injections and liposuction combined.
Reasons for the boom in chin augmentation may include increased use of video-chat technology, an aging baby boomer population and a desire to improve work success, suggested a society news release.
“The chin and jawline are among the first areas to show signs of aging,” Dr. Malcolm Roth, president of the society, said in the release. “We also know that as more people see themselves on video-chat technology, they may notice that their jawline is not as sharp as they want it to be. Chin implants can make a dramatic difference.”
There were nearly 21,000 chin augmentations last year, a 71 percent increase from 2010, according to the release. Women had nearly 10,100 procedures, a 66 percent increase, and men had almost 10,600 procedures, a 76 percent increase.
Among younger adults, aged 20 to 29, 2,750 underwent augmentations, representing a 68 percent increase. among those aged 30 to 39, nearly 2,600 had the procedure, a 69 percent increase.
Numbers increased with age: There were more than 5,000 chin surgeries in adults aged 40 to 54, marking a 77 percent increase. For those 55 and older, nearly 8,500 procedures were performed, a 70 percent increase.
Other cosmetic procedures that increased in 2011 were: lip augmentations (49 percent), cheek implants (47 percent), laser skin resurfacing (9 percent), soft-tissue fillers (7 percent) and facelift (5 percent).
