Plastic Surgeon in Virginia Backs Breast Implant Safety, Stresses Need for Patient Education

LEESBURG, VA, may 15, 2012 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) –According to the most recent statistics from the American Societyfor Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) and Virginia plastic surgeonDr. Behzad Parva, silicone breast implants are the preferred implantchoice for breast augmentation procedures across the nation. Despiterecent media attention concerning the implant scares outside the U.S.from French company Poly Implant Prothese (PIP), Dr. Parva says anoverwhelming majority of his patients choose silicone implants overtheir saline counterparts, a statistic confirmed by the 2011 ASAPSstudy which reveals 69% of all breast augmentation procedures usedsilicone. He says that patients who take the time to become educatedand informed about cosmetic procedures such as breast augmentation inLeesburg, VA, and select a board certified plastic surgeon withextensive experience and consistently good results can enjoy thebenefits of balanced body proportions as well as increasedconfidence: “FDA-approved silicone gel implants have awell-documented safety record and they are the only gel implants weuse for our patients. Conversely, the PIP implant was notFDA-approved and is now known to have been manufactured usinginferior, industrial grade silicone.”

While silicone breast implants have been shown to be the most popularimplant choice, Dr. Parva says he still fields a number of questionsevery so often at his Virginia plastic surgery practice about thesafety of their use. He says the most important way to ensure onereceives the safest and most effective treatment is to choose aboard-certified plastic surgeon who has extensive expertise inperforming breast augmentations. Thanks to strict regulations fromthe U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Dr. Parva says breastimplants used by board-certified plastic surgery practices, thosecoming from companies with a proven track record of reliability, havebeen verified in their safety by a lengthy screening and evaluationprocess. He says patients who undergo a procedure in the U.S. from aproperly trained and qualified surgeon can rest assured their breastaugmentation is performed with the most careful attention to safetyand success: “Appropriate training and vast experience are key: aplastic surgeon who is board certified by the American Board ofPlastic Surgery and who has extensive experience in breast surgeryand breast implants is the optimum choice when selecting a surgeonfor breast surgery.”

until the recent approval of California-based manufacturer Sientra, only two companies had been FDA-approved for the distribution ofbreast implants for the past 20 years: Mentor and Allergan. Dr. Parvasays the emergence of a third FDA-approved implant producer bearstestament to the tireless work put in by researchers and surgeons toprovide patients with safe devices, high quality care and effectivetreatment. He says women often choose silicone gel implants over thesaline implants because of a more natural look and feel. FDA-approvaladds a measure of comfort in knowing that they are choosing awell-studied and safe device: “I encourage our patients to considertheir goals. If they place a high priority on a natural feel to thebreast, then they will generally be happier with a silicone gelimplant over a saline implant.”

Overall, whether patients are interested in breast implants inLeesburg or some other cosmetic enhancement, Dr. Parva says stayingup-to-date with the latest advancements in plastic surgery isessential for achieving the proper care. Through partnership with adedicated and experienced plastic surgeon, he says patients can takeadvantage of the natural, effective results available through breastaugmentation.

Male Plastic Surgery on the Rise in Houston – Healthcare Global

HOUSTON, TX–(Marketwire – may 8, 2012) – Dr. James F. Boynton says plastic surgery for men is becoming more popular at his Houston plastic surgery practice. Historically, he says male plastic surgery represented 10-15% of the total number of procedures performed at his practice. However, this number has slowly been climbing, and he says procedures for men now account for about 30% of the total. Dr. Boynton says this increase was inevitable as the public acceptance of cosmetic enhancement, and total number of procedures has continued to grow over the last decade.

The most recent report from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) supports Dr. Boynton's belief, as it shows that more than half of the US now approves of cosmetic enhancement, and more than 9 million surgical and nonsurgical procedures were performed in 2011. the Houston plastic surgeon also points to the gender distribution of procedures as a signal that this trend will continue, as men only accounted for 9% of the total.

Despite the disparity between the volume of procedures performed for men and women, and the fact that the top five procedures highlighted in the ASAPS study differ for men and women, Dr. Boynton says the decision to undergo a procedure is born from the same desire to match the outward appearance to the inner sense of youth and self-confidence.

The top five procedures for male plastic surgery in 2011 are as follows: lipoplasty or liposuction, rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery, gynecomastia, and facelift. while the motivations for a majority of the procedures men consider are similar to the reasons women pursue cosmetic enhancement, Dr. Boynton says one procedure in particular carries a different set of goals: gynecomastia, or male breast reduction. He says many men that come to him for such a procedure have tried diet and exercise in the hopes of correcting the issue. However, he stresses that the only way to correct this condition is often through a surgical procedure:

“Men in their thirties and forties are often at a point in their lives where they have some disposable income and want to do something for themselves that in many cases has bothered them since childhood. However, they are often shorter on time and unable to accurately define their cosmetic enhancement goals. so I like to make sure we take the time to address all concerns, including my minimal incision approach to male breast reduction.”

Regardless of the procedure, Dr. Boynton says his goal remains the same for any patient and any procedure: provide safe and effective treatment that enhances the lives of his patients. for this reason, he adds that he always urges any patient to consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon because patients can find solace in the fact that these surgeons have the experience and skill to meet their expectations with the safest procedure possible.

New HydraSolve™ Lipoplasty System launched at American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery… — IRVINE, Calif., May 4, 2012 /PRNewswire/ –

IRVINE, Calif., may 4, 2012 /PRNewswire/ – Andrew Technologies, LLC launched the HydraSolve™ Lipoplasty System today at the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) in Vancouver, BC. ASAPS is the leading plastic surgery medical conference for surgeons focused on aesthetic body contouring and is attended by approximately 3,000 plastic surgeons.

HydraSolve™ is an FDA-cleared liposuction device based on the same patented Tissue Liquefaction Technology™ that was launched in 2003 by Alcon as the AquaLase® Liquefaction Device for precision cataract surgery. HydraSolve™ combines natural saline solution with low levels of pressure and temperature, to liquefy only targeted fat tissue. Because fat tissue is liquefied, the cutting of fat by forceful thrusts of the cannula is no longer required. the specially designed HydraSolve™ cannula is manufactured with aperture edges that have a rounded radius of curvature that do not cut tissue. it is the energized saline stream, inside the cannula, that liquefies targeted fat tissue while not damaging or cutting blood vessels, nerves or connective tissue. HydraSolve™ achieves liquefaction of fat tissue by cell disaggregation, not by the lysing of cell membranes.

The HydraSolve™ system is displayed at booth #333. there is also a Hot Topics presentation today by Dr. Richard D’Amico (past-President of ASPS) where Dr. D’Amico will highlight his clinical experiences with HydraSolve. Additionally, Andrew Technologies has submitted two e-Posters. Scientific poster # 5266 provides data from the safety studies supporting our FDA clearance, Scientific poster # 5233 provides results of the largest consumer survey ever reported in Lipoplasty with 21,509 respondents.

Since the 2010 FDA clearance of HydraSolve™, Andrew Technologies has been engaged in clinical development of the device with several leading Plastic Surgeons to demonstrate the full potential of HydraSolve in over 50 patient cases. According to Dr. Richard D’Amico of Englewood, N.J., ”It is clearly more efficient and my opinion is that it is less traumatic and may result in less blood loss for a given amount of lipoaspirate.” Dr. Christopher Godek of Toms River, NJ, and President of the NJ Society of Plastic Surgery, has contributed to the development of the HydraSolve™ technology since its inception and observed that “HydraSolve™ provides faster, smoother fat extraction for the surgeon, with a quicker recovery for patients.” Dr. David Abramson, another expert plastic surgeon in new York and new Jersey has more recently started using HydraSolve and added, “With the first patient I treated, on her first post-op visit I had to actively search for some bruising and almost didn’t find any.”

Dr. Mark S. Andrew, who co-invented HydraSolve™ and related technologies, is now Chief Scientific Officer of Andrew Technologies and has been directly involved with all of the research and development of HydraSolve™. According to Dr. Andrew, “HydraSolve™ is better for patients because it is gentle and tissue-friendly; it’s better for surgeons because it gives them excellent control and precision in removing fat, and it also reduces their physical exertion.”

Birmingham Plastic Surgeon Discusses Social Media and U. S. Approval of Cosmetic Surgery

Birmingham, AL (PRWEB) November 22, 2011

according to the most recent statistics from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), 9.3 million cosmetic surgical and nonsurgical procedures were performed in the U. S. in 2010. while Dr. Grady Core, a board-certified plastic surgeon in Birmingham, AL, finds the sheer volume of procedures performed in 2010 impressive, he stresses the 51% approval rating of cosmetic surgery is far more intriguing. as healthcare practices continue to dedicate more resources to forming online communities through social media sites such as Facebook, he says he expects the overall acceptance of procedures such as liposuction, breast augmentation, and breast lifts to continue to climb.

Dr. Core says he finds this data interesting and wonders how social media marketing will impact the aesthetic healthcare industry as a whole. Similar to conferences such as the annual meetings of ASAPS and the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, Dr. Core says that the appeal of social media lies in the ability to interact between plastic surgeons and patients interested in cosmetic enhancement, and enables these communities to learn more about the latest innovations and techniques in the industry.

Another point of interest within the ASAPS report and growing popularity of social media is the correlation between age-related demographics: patients aged 50 and up accounted for 31% of cosmetic procedures in 2010, which is also the fastest growing demographic on Facebbok. as the two seemingly disparate entities continue to come together, he says he expects the 2011 ASAPS report will find support for cosmetic surgery in the U. S. has continued to expand.

Dr. Grady Core earned his medical degree from the University of Arkansas. He then completed his general surgery residency at Flushing Hospital Medical Center, and his plastic surgery residency at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. Dr. Core served as Chief of the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the Ochsner Clinic in New Orleans, and regularly publishes and presents at plastic surgery meetings around the world. He is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, and is a member of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Dr. Core is also well known throughout as a developer of the endoscopic breast augmentation procedure, which is a topic he lectures on regularly at international plastic surgery events.

Houston Plastic Surgeon on Breast Augmentation as Most Popular Form of Cosmetic Enhancement

Houston, TX (PRWEB) September 28, 2011

More than 1.6 million surgical cosmetic enhancement procedures were performed in 2010, and breast augmentation was the most popular with 318,123 procedures performed according to the most recent data from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS). as a board-certified plastic surgeon in Houston, Dr. James F. Boynton says breast augmentation was also the most popular form of cosmetic enhancement at his practice, Boynton Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. he adds that patient preference for silicone implants at his practice also reflects the national statistics outlined in the ASAPS data.

More than 62% of patients undergoing breast augmentation in the U. S. chose silicone implants in 2010, according to the ASAPS study. Dr. Boynton says his Houston breast augmentation patients also prefer silicone implants at roughly the same rate. he says his patients tend to prefer silicone implants because they look and feel more like natural breast tissue. “About 80% of the patients that come to see me seeking breast enhancement choose silicone gel breast implants. I think the biggest reason is that they feel so natural and most of my patients want to be as natural as possible”

Dr. Boynton adds that improved safety has not only influenced a number of his new patients to consider silicone breast implants, but has also inspired a number of patients with saline implants to consider an upgrade to the new cohesive gel implants. “I have many patients now that are 5-6 years out from their initial breast augmentation with saline implants who are happy with their results but now have decided to come back and change out their implants for silicone gel. Silicone gel implants are truly the ‘Cadillac’ of breast implants in my opinion. They look the best, feel the best, and last the longest. And now as a plastic surgeon using the new Keller funnel technology and smaller surgical instruments, I am able to offer the smallest possible incision which is the same size incision that I do for saline implants.”

Ultimately, Dr. Boynton says patients enter his office with a specific set of cosmetic enhancement goals and expectations. whether patients think they prefer silicone to saline does not matter according to Dr. Boynton, adding that his job is to help patients make this significant life decision, and feel comfortable with that decision. “We spend time in each breast augmentation consultation talking about the pros and cons of silicone and saline implants. in patients who have really thin tissues, I strongly emphasize the enhanced appearance and decreased chance of visible rippling that is more common with saline implants. some patients still have health concerns in regards to silicone gel implants and we spend time talking about the safety of the current FDA approved devices and how they are different from the ones before. I also refer patients to a great educational website for more detail if they have more questions about silicone breast implants at http://www.breastimplantsafety.org."

Dr. Steven Turkeltaub on How to Choose the Right Plastic Surgeon for Breast Augmentation

Scottsdale, AZ (PRWEB) September 08, 2011

More than 9.3 million cosmetic procedures, including 318,123 breast augmentation procedures, were performed in 2010 according to the latest data from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS). As the popularity of cosmetic enhancement continues to grow, Dr. Steven Turkeltaub states that patients must address several important elements when considering plastic surgery in Arizona and around the U. S., including a surgeon’s experience, an individualized surgical treatment plan, and their own level of comfort with the surgeon and his team.

When patients are considering breast augmentation in Arizona, Dr. Turkeltaub says he emphatically recommends that they seek consultations with experienced and reputable plastic surgeons who are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. “Unfortunately, there are thousands of physicians across the country who are not plastic surgeons yet are performing breast augmentation surgery despite significant deficiencies in their qualifications, skills and training. often using slick marketing including the non-specific term “board certified”, they directly and indirectly portray themselves as equivalents or actual plastic surgeons when they are not. Patients can pay a heavy price monetarily and health wise if they do not do adequate research.”

In addition to board certification, Dr. Turkeltaub states that identifying and exploring individual aesthetic enhancement goals and reviewing expectations are extremely important. he recommends a full discussion of the surgical treatment plan including all the relevant options. he adds that photographs of the surgeon’s before-and-after gallery can be helpful to better ensure that the patient and surgeon are on the same page. Dr. Turkeltaub says doing so is especially important when patients are considering breast augmentation because of the impact such a procedure can have on a woman’s overall sense of femininity and self-confidence.

Dr. Turkeltaub also had this to say: “It should go without saying that patients should have a good feeling about the plastic surgeon that they are considering to perform their surgery. a good bedside manner and a warm, caring office staff go a long way in making the overall experience more comfortable, more pleasant and less stressful.”

About Steven Turkeltaub, MD, PC

Dr. Steven Turkeltaub earned his medical degree from the Boston University School of Medicine. he then completed his general surgery training at the University of Miami Jackson Memorial Hospital, and the Northwestern Medical Center in Chicago, followed by a plastic surgery residency at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. Plastic Surgeons Respond To Proposed Cosmetic Surgery Tax

Plastic Surgeons Respond To Proposed Cosmetic Surgery Tax

Arlington Heights, IL, and New York, NY (Vocus) November 20, 2009

Late yesterday, democratic leaders in the Senate unveiled their proposal for overhauling the health care system, which included a new 5% tax on elective cosmetic procedures. Senate Democrats argue that the tax, which was a surprise addition to the sweeping 2,074-page bill, will generate .8 billion over the next 10 years to be put towards the bill’s estimated 9 billion price tag. however, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) and the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) oppose this tax as discriminatory, arbitrary and ineffective.

“Elective surgery taxes discriminate against women, given that 86 percent of cosmetic surgery patients are female, of which 91 percent are between the working ages of 19-64,” said Dr. Michael McGuire, ASPS President. “Moreover, contrary to popular belief, cosmetic surgery is no longer an exclusive luxury afforded by the very wealthy, but rather a mainstream and reasonable option most common amongst the working middle-class.”

“this tax is effectively a “Soccer Mom” tax that will adversely impact mainstream American wives and mothers, who are the majority of plastic surgery patients,” said Renato Saltz, MD, President of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS). “As doctors, we understand and appreciate the need for health care reform, but taxing physicians and cosmetic surgery procedures to pay for the reform is not realistic or beneficial.”

In a 2005 ASPS survey of people planning to have cosmetic surgery within the next two years, 60% of respondents reported an annual household income of ,000-,000 a year. Most importantly, 40% of those reported a household income of only ,000-,000. Only 10% of respondents reported a household income of over ,000, which clearly refutes the suggestion that elective surgery taxes are “luxury” or “sin” taxes affecting a privileged few.

The ASAPS and ASPS also contend that such taxes have been proven arbitrary and difficult to administer as evidence by the experience in New Jersey, the only state to have imposed a cosmetic tax. since it passed a 6% tax on elective medical procedures in 2004, the NJ Department of Taxation has experienced a 59% shortfall based on projected revenue estimates. Eight other states have considered similar tax legislation– and they all wisely rejected them.

Finally, though the bill claims that the only procedures that would be taxed are those that are “not necessary to ameliorate a deformity arising from, or directly related to, a congenital abnormality, a personal injury resulting from an accident or trauma, or a disfiguring disease,” The Plastic Surgery Societies contend that such distinctions aren’t always obvious. because the line between ‘cosmetic’ and ‘reconstructive’ surgery is not always clear, such a tax would leave the determination of medical necessity up to state tax auditors – a completely inappropriate proposition.

“As doctors our first concern always needs to be patient safety,” said Dr. Saltz, “for those patients here in this country, as well as those patients who may now be encouraged by this tax to obtain their procedures abroad.”

“The ASPS has, and continues to oppose all taxes on physicians, in any and all forms, due to their deleterious effects of health care costs and access to patient care,” said Dr. McGuire. “Medical care should not be used as a tool to fix broken finances.”

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons represents more than 7,000 physician members and is recognized as a leading authority and information source on cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery. ASPS comprises more than 94 percent of all board-certified plastic surgeons in the United States. Founded in 1931, the Society represents physicians certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery or The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

The 2400-member American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) is the only plastic surgery organization devoted entirely to the advancement of cosmetic surgery. ASAPS is recognized throughout the world as the authoritative source for cosmetic surgery education. U.S. members are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Canadian members are certified in plastic surgery by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada

Plastic Surgeons Respond To Proposed Cosmetic Surgery Tax

Acceptance of Plastic Surgery for Men Is on the Rise

There is disagreement about just how much male plastic surgery is increasing, but there is no argument that more and more people are accepting of the concept.

(Vocus) August 17, 2010 — Men are getting more plastic surgery than ever . . . maybe. to find evidence that it is increasing, you have only to look in newspapers and on television, but to find evidence that it is not increasing, you have only to look at the statistics. however, according to Dr. Leo Lapuerta of the Plastic Surgery Institute of Southeast Texas, acceptance of male plastic surgery is definitely increasing.

Statistically, plastic surgery for men is declining, maybe. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, liposuction for men went down by 57% from 2000 to 2009. On the other hand, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery claims that liposuction for men increased by 43% from 1997 to 2009. Both societies agree that the number of overall plastic surgery procedures for men peaked in either 2007 or 2008, and in 2009 saw a significant decline. although the ASAPS claims that men make up a slightly larger percentage of plastic surgery patients now, the ASPS says that men made up the largest fraction of patients when their number of procedures was at its height. Nonsurgical procedures, such as BOTOX® Cosmetic injections, have grown significantly for men, although maybe not as much as for women (290% vs. 225% (ASAPS), 227% vs. 548% (ASPS)).

"Men have always been a significant part of our plastic surgery practice," says Dr. Lapuerta, "but what you're seeing now, what's creating stir in the media, is an increasing acceptance of plastic surgery for men. Men used to be very concerned about concealing their surgery, but nowadays they are much more open about it."

There may be many reasons for increasing acceptance of plastic surgery and other cosmetic procedures among men. One is probably the revelation that good looks do make a difference in a person's professional life, with the so-called beauty dividend contributing about $250,000 to a person's lifetime earnings. This makes plastic surgery "practical" and therefore more acceptable from a "masculine" point of view. Another factor is increasing acceptance of plastic surgery generally. A recent survey conducted by the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery showed that 71% of people felt society was less judgmental about cosmetic surgery than it had been five years ago. A third factor contributing to acceptance of plastic surgery for men is a by-product of third-wave feminism. part of third-wave feminism is what is described as sex-positivism, where women are encouraged to make vocal judgments about sex and sexuality, including what makes men attractive. Statements of this type may make men more open about appearance-related concerns and what might be done about them.
