Botox: A dangerous new teen fashion

Botox has been popular for years among women (and men) of a certain age for softening those souvenirs of experience we call wrinkles. It’s a personal and philosophical choice that some mature individuals make, and less drastic and expensive than plastic surgery. but now the procedure is growing in popularity among teens, the new York Times reports.

Parents may sometimes blame their own wrinkles on  their kids, but teens generally don’t get them — so why would they get Botox? Charice Pempengco is an 18-year-old singer from the Philippines who is to appear on “Glee,” the hit Fox series. she made waves last month when it was reported that she had gotten Botox treatment to make make her face look less round. she told Philippine television, “I want to look fresh when I appear before the camera,” during the visit at which her doctor, Vicki Belo, injected her jaw. It’s no novelty for TV celebrities to embrace cosmetic procedures in the pursuit of fame, but now Botox appears to be gaining traction among non-celebrity teens as well.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, 12,000 teens received Botox injections in the last year. It is unclear how many of these procedures were for legitimate medical reasons, such as relieving the pain from temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ) or to stop a twitching eyelid, but plastic surgeons confirm that many teens are seeking procedures for cosmetic reasons. these perceived flaws include overly square jawlines and gummy smiles. Dr. Samuel Lam, a facial plastic surgeon in Dallas interviewed by the Times, says that he has done 100 Botox procedures on teens for nonsurgical facial reshaping. “A lot of teenagers tease each other about things that as adults we may not consider as important,” he said.

Using Botox for cosmetic reasons in teens is not just a matter of philosophical debate, it can also have unwanted side effects. with Botox gone awry, you could end up with nerve paralysis, which could cause a facial droop, drooling, or even slurred speech — and that wouldn’t look so good on camera.

Teenage singer Charice gets Botox for ‘Glee’ debut

Baby-faced teen singer Charice says she prepared for her debuton the hit Fox TV show “Glee” by getting Botox and an anti-agingprocedure “to look fresh on camera,” but her publicist said theBotox was for muscle pain, not for cosmetic reasons.

The 18-year-old Filipino singer with a booming voice, whorecently released her self-titled debut album, saw her careerskyrocket after appearing on Ellen DeGeneres’ and Oprah Winfrey’stalk shows. she underwent a 30-minute Thermage skin-tighteningprocedure and Botox injections to make her “naturally round face”more narrow, celebrity cosmetic surgeon Vicki Belo told ABS-CBNtelevision.

However, Charice’s publicist, Liz Rosenberg, said in an e-mailMonday the Botox was “absolutely not cosmetic,” and added said thetreatment was for muscle pain in her jaw.

Belo did the Botox procedure in front of the cameras.

“You chew gum and it turns out to be a favorite super-exercisefor these muscles, your chewing muscles. So we will show you, thismuscle here it’s a bit protruding,” Belo said as she touchedCharice’s face. “It’s like a ball, so we are going to Botox that inorder to get it flat so she will have a cuter face … we want togive you the apple cheek look because it’s cute, right?”

Charice, in the same interview, said last week’s face makeoverwas part of her big preparations for her appearance on the hitshow’s second season. she starts filming at the end of thismonth.

“All people will be anticipating how will Charice look? Is shegood enough to pit against Rachel Berry? So of course there istremendous pressure,” Charice said. Berry is portrayed by LeaMichele, who is 23.

In an earlier TV interview, Charice said she auditioned for”Glee” in mid-June in Los Angeles and was thankful to have beenaccepted.

“It’s really a blessing,” she said, adding she was “very proudto be an Asian, very proud to be Filipino.”

On the streets of Manila on Monday, some residents who followCharice had mixed feelings about what she did with her face.

“I think it’s OK for women to have procedures done, but Chariceis too young. does she need it?” said Patricia Carpio, a21-year-old student.

For Myrna Lumanao, a 23-year-old seller in a doughnut stall, looking natural is better. “I guess she can afford to have thoseprocedures done because she has the money, but I wish she did notchange her looks.”

Dr. Malcolm Roth, president of New York’s Society of PlasticSurgeons and director of plastic surgery at Maimonides MedicalCenter in New York, said he wasn’t sure how someone so young couldbenefit from Botox.

“You would think that the makeup people could take care of (anywrinkles she might have) or that they could take care of it inpost-production,” he said.

But Roth said there might be some benefits for on-camera teensin Hollywood. “Some people do have hyperactive muscles and musclesare what create the wrinkles in certain types of expressions. …it may be of some benefit for the camera, but I would be reticentto consider Botox for a normal 18-year-old.”

Thermage is a non-surgical procedure that uses radio frequencytechnology, but Roth said evidence was inconclusive on whether skincan be tightened without surgery.

Born Charmaine Clarice Relucio Pempengco and raised with herbrother by a single mother, she sang in local contests and appearedon TV talent shows in the Philippines and South Korea before shegot a big break on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” at age 15.

She later appeared several times on the “Oprah Winfrey Show” andcredits Winfrey for helping push her career.
