KFVS12 News & Weather Cape Girardeau, Carbondale, Poplar BluffMayo Clinic: Jackson has bipolar disorder

By SOPHIA TAREENAssociated Press

CHICAGO (AP) – U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., a Chicago Democrat who took a hushed medical leave two months ago, is being treated for bipolar disorder, the Mayo Clinic announced Monday.

The Rochester, Minn.-based clinic specified his condition as Bipolar II, which is defined as periodic episodes of depression and hypomania, a less serious form of mania.

“Congressman Jackson is responding well to the treatment and regaining his strength,” the clinic said in a statement.

Bipolar II is a treatable condition that affects parts of the brain controlling emotion, thought and drive and is likely caused “by a complex set of genetic and environmental factors,” the clinic said. the statement also mentioned that Jackson underwent weight loss surgery in 2004 and said such a surgery can change how the body absorbs foods and medications, among other things.

The statement Monday was the most detailed to date about the congressman's mysterious medical leave, which began June 10. But it raised new questions about when the congressman can return to work.

A Jackson aide said last week that the congressman was expected back in the district within a matter of weeks, but Jackson's spokesmen declined to comment Monday.

His father, the Rev. Jesse Jackson, wouldn't say much about the diagnosis.

“I'm glad he's getting the treatment he needs and is responding well,” the elder Jackson said, adding that “there's no timetable” for his recovery.

Experts and mental health advocates say many people are able to work and function in their daily lives while managing treatment.

Treatment includes medication and psychotherapy, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. the institute estimates about 5.7 million American adults suffer from the disorder, which can be a lifelong disease.

At least one other member of Congress has suffered from it while in office.

Former U.S. Rep. Patrick Kennedy of Rhode Island has talked openly about his lifelong struggles with bipolar disorder and addiction. He's was a leading voice in Congress for removing stigma linked with mental illness. the son of the late Massachusetts Sen. Edward Kennedy was a congressman for 16 years and retired last year.

The younger Kennedy was arrested in 2006 after an early morning car crash near the U.S. Capitol that he said he could not remember. after spending a month at Mayo for treatment of addiction and depression, Kennedy pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of prescription drugs.

“I had two of the biggest successes in politics after I went to treatment,” Kennedy said, referring to getting nearly 70 percent of the re-election vote in 2006 and his legislative victory of getting a bill requiring mental health parity passed in 2008.

“It was because I ran toward the problem and not away from it. When I returned to my district, I spoke openly about it,” he said.

Kennedy said he planned to visit Jackson on Thursday. he said he and Jackson had a lot in common: both served on the House Appropriations Committee together and had famous fathers.

Jackson's office didn't announce his medical condition until about two weeks after he went on leave, and it initially described the problem as exhaustion. Later, his office disclosed that Jackson had “grappled with certain physical and emotional ailments privately for a long period of time.” a statement from an unnamed doctor said Jackson had a “mood disorder.”

Earlier this month, Jackson's office announced he was at Mayo and being treated for depression and gastrointestinal issues, after a transfer from the Sierra Tucson Treatment Center in Arizona.

Though the Mayo Clinic mentioned Jackson's weight loss surgery, its statement Monday stopped short of directly tying it to his mental health problems. Mayo Clinic spokeswoman Traci Klein declined to comment.

Dr. Jaime Ponce, president of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, said there is no evidence that the type of surgery Jackson had can cause bipolar disorder. a deficiency of the nutrient thiamine can cause a brain condition that could mimic bipolar disorder, Ponce said, but “bipolar disorder is totally different.”

Jackson underwent a duodenal switch procedure in 2004, which involves removing part of the stomach and rearranging the intestine so less food is absorbed. he lost 50 pounds.

Dr. Vivek Prachand, associate professor of surgery at University of Chicago, said people already taking medications for depression can undergo weight loss surgery but may need their medications adjusted afterward. Prachand added that surgery is a drastic change that can trigger an episode in someone with a history of depression.

Jackson aide Rick Bryant said last week that Jackson appeared in good spirits and wanted him to push forward on projects in the district, which includes Chicago neighborhoods and suburbs. Jackson, who first won office in 1995, is on the November ballot with two little-known candidates and is widely expected to win re-election.

The timing and manner in which the medical leave was handled has invited scrutiny.

Jackson is under a House Ethics Committee investigation for ties to imprisoned former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich. Jackson's office announced his leave just days after a former fundraiser connected to the probe was arrested on federal medical fraud charges.

Jackson has denied wrongdoing.

Paralysed man regains use of hand after operation

Instead of operating on the spine itself, the surgeons rerouted working nerves in the upper arms. these nerves still “talk” to the brain because they attach to the spine above the injury.

Following the surgery, performed at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, and one year of intensive physical therapy, the patient regained some hand function, specifically the ability to bend the thumb and index finger.

The unnamed patient can now feed himself bite-size pieces of food and write with assistance.

“This procedure is unusual for treating quadriplegia because we do not attempt to go back into the spinal cord where the injury is,” says surgeon Ida K. Fox, MD, assistant professor of plastic and reconstructive surgery at Washington University.

“Instead, we go out to where we know things work, in this case the elbow, so that we can borrow nerves there and reroute them to give hand function.”

The surgery was developed and performed by the study’s senior author Susan E. Mackinnon, MD, chief of the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Washington University School of Medicine.

Specialising in injuries to peripheral nerves, she has pioneered similar surgeries to return function to injured arms and legs.

Surgeons Restore Some Hand Function to Quadriplegic Patient

Newswise — Surgeons at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis have restored some hand function in a quadriplegic patient with a spinal cord injury at the C7 vertebra, the lowest bone in the neck. Instead of operating on the spine itself, the surgeons rerouted working nerves in the upper arms. These nerves still “talk” to the brain because they attach to the spine above the injury.

Following the surgery, performed at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, and one year of intensive physical therapy, the patient regained some hand function, specifically the ability to bend the thumb and index finger. he can now feed himself bite-size pieces of food and write with assistance.

The case study, published online May 15 in the Journal of Neurosurgery, is, to the authors’ knowledge, the first reported case of restoring the ability to flex the thumb and index finger after a spinal cord injury.

“This procedure is unusual for treating quadriplegia because we do not attempt to go back into the spinal cord where the injury is,” says surgeon Ida K. Fox, MD, assistant professor of plastic and reconstructive surgery at Washington University, who treats patients at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. “Instead, we go out to where we know things work — in this case the elbow — so that we can borrow nerves there and reroute them to give hand function.”

Although patients with spinal cord injuries at the C6 and C7 vertebra have no hand function, they do have shoulder, elbow and some wrist function because the associated nerves attach to the spinal cord above the injury and connect to the brain. since the surgeon must tap into these working nerves, the technique will not benefit patients who have lost all arm function due to higher injuries — in vertebrae C1 through C5.

The surgery was developed and performed by the study’s senior author Susan E. Mackinnon, MD, chief of the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Washington University School of Medicine. Specializing in injuries to peripheral nerves, she has pioneered similar surgeries to return function to injured arms and legs.

Mackinnon originally developed this procedure for patients with arm injuries specifically damaging the nerves that provide the ability to flex the thumb and index finger. this is the first time she has applied this peripheral nerve technique to return limb function after a spinal cord injury.

“Many times these patients say they would like to be able to do very simple things,” Fox says. “They say they would like to be able to feed themselves or write without assistance. If we can restore the ability to pinch, between thumb and index finger, it can return some very basic independence.”

Mackinnon cautions that the hand function restored to the patient was not instantaneous and required intensive physical therapy. It takes time to retrain the brain to understand that nerves that used to bend the elbow now provide pinch, she says.

Though this study reports only one case, Mackinnon and her colleagues do not anticipate a limited window of time during which a patient with a similar spinal cord injury must be treated with this nerve transfer technique. this patient underwent the surgery almost two years after his injury. As long as the nerve remains connected to the support and nourishment of the spinal cord, even though it no longer “talks” to the brain, the nerve and its associated muscle remain healthy, even years after the injury.

“The spinal cord is the control center for the nerves, which run like spaghetti all the way out to the tips of the fingers and the tips of the toes,” says Mackinnon, the Sydney M. Shoenberg Jr. and Robert H. Shoenberg Professor and director of the School of Medicine’s Center for Nerve Injury and Paralysis. “Even nerves below the injury remain healthy because they are still connected to the spinal cord. the problem is that these nerves no longer ‘talk’ to the brain because the spinal cord injury blocks the signals.”

To detour around the block in this patient’s C7 spinal cord injury and return hand function below the level of the injury, Mackinnon operated in the upper arms. There, the working nerves that connect above the injury and the non-working nerves that connect below the injury run parallel to each other, making it possible to tap into a functional nerve and direct those signals to a non-functional neighbor.

In this case, Mackinnon took a non-working nerve that controls the ability to pinch and plugged it into a working nerve that drives one of two muscles that flex the elbow. after the surgery, the bicep still flexes the elbow, but a second muscle, called the brachialis, that used to also provide elbow flexion, now bends the thumb and index finger.

“This is not a particularly expensive or overly complex surgery,” Mackinnon says. “It’s not a hand or a face transplant, for example. It’s something we would like other surgeons around the country to do.”

Detailed information for potential patients interested in nerve transfer surgery for C6 and C7 spinal cord injury will be available after 10 a.m. EDT Tuesday, May 15, 2012 at nerve.wustl.edu.

MIND GAMES: ever played Tetris? Eye specialists at Glasgow Caledonian University are getting kids with ‘lazy eye’ to play Tetris for an hour a day to sort out their vision problems. Lazy eye, properly called Amblyopia, is where one eye focuses better than the other. the kids wear special goggles that show the falling blocks clearly to the lazy eye, but less clearly to the other. that forces the brain to be more active and can re-start some dormant cells. After around 10 days thevision problem is fixed. now do it for myopia please. BBC has more.

SIGHT IN MIND: In Australia the Monash Vision Group are working on a bionic eye to improve vision. a biologically inert chip is inserted into the brain, but can be tuned up by doctors without further surgery. the chip receives wireless signals from a special pair of glasses which detect which way your eyes are looking and then turn a digital camera in that direction. the glasses process the camera signal and send it to the brain as electrical signals via the implanted chip. the chip directly stimulates the visual cortex and the wearer’s brain eventually learns to interpret these signals as sight.Researchers hope to do their first patient tests by 2014. Spectacular. Details at Monash Vision Group.

HOLEY LIGHT: We think of optical telescopes as collecting huge amounts of light. all the light is focussed by refraction or reflection on a single point, usually involving carefully crafted, heavy and costly lenses or mirrors. a different approach by the US Air Force Academy instead uses a lightweight ultra-thin plastic disc called a photon sieve. the sieve is perforated by millions of microscopic holes. Each hole bends light at a different angle, creating a focal point. the sieve is cheap and easy to manufacture at large sizes, and it can be tightly folded and unfurled again. just try that with a standard mirror! the downsides are that it can only take black and white pictures and since it receives less light it doesn’t image dim objects. There’s always a case for the quick and dirty approach, so I’m sure someone will find these photon sieves useful. more at NewScientist.

SIGHT IN TOUCH: If you can’t see or hear then communication is pretty tricky. the Lorm alphabet though allows communication by patterns of touch on the hand. the Mobile Lorm Glove has been created in Germany to help wearers send and receive text messages, emails and chat using the Lorm alphabet. Sensors on the palm read touches and send them via Bluetooth to a phone. Small vibration motors on the back of the glove take signals from a phone and let the wearer feel the words. the makers hope to also develop the system to allow wearers to read ebooks and audio books. by translating between touch signals and email and other forms of messaging, it means deaf blind people can really open up their communication channels. Soon it may be true that on the Internet no-one knows you’re deaf blind. more information at Design Research Lab.

SOUND OF SILENCE: ever wished for just a few minutes of peace and quiet? it turns out we can’t really stand true quiet. the anechoic chamber at Orfield Laboratories in South Minneapolis is 99.99% sound absorbent. Metre thick fibreglass acoustic wedges, double walls of insulated steel and 30 cm thick concrete make it utterly silent. the chamber’s used for testing products and research into sounds and sound quality, but it’s not a human-friendly place. the silence removes cues we need for balance, so you have to sit down. Then you can hear your heart beating, your lungs, your stomach. Most people last only a few minutes before they start to hallucinate and have to get out. the half hour of quiet may be worth it though. The Daily Mail has more.

Doctors confident of recovery after Sen. Mark Kirk suffers stroke

Sen. Mark Kirk suffered a stroke and underwent surgery on Monday, after which doctors indicated his prognosis is good for recovery though he will need rehabilitation and likely the use of his left arm “will be very difficult.”

The 52-year-old Kirk checked himself into Lake Forest Hospital in Illinois on Saturday. he was transferred on Sunday to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, where tests showed that he had suffered an ischemic stroke.

“Early this morning the senator underwent surgery to relieve swelling around his brain stemming from the stroke,” a spokesperson from his office said. “The surgery was successful. due to his young age, good health and the nature of the stroke, doctors are very confident in the senator’s recovery over the weeks ahead.”

Dr. Richard Fessler, a neurosurgeon who performed the surgery, told reporters that Kirk was having “dizziness and perhaps a headache,” but he wasn’t at the hospital where Kirk first checked in so doesn’t know the exact symptoms Kirk presented when he first arrived for help.

At some point, however, Fessler said Kirk began to “deteriorate neurologically.” he said Kirk’s condition evolved rapidly and “he was becoming less responsive.” Fessler said he doesn’t think the medical team could have done anything to stop the rapid progression.

Kirk is sedated and in intensive care, where he will spend several days. Fessler said they were removing a piece of skull approximately four inches by eight inches to allow the brain to swell, and when the swelling goes down, they will put back the bone shell.

Fessler said Kirk’s artery was completely blocked, which mean surgery was necessary despite the fact there was no bleeding.

The stroke occurred on the right side of brain is where stroke took place, which is good Fessler said, because cognitive function is primarily on the left side. he said prospects for a full mental recovery were “very good,” but a full physical recovery on his left side were “not very good”

“I believe his left side of the brain will be fine,” Fessler said, adding that he is hopeful Kirk will be able to use his left leg.

“He’s got a pretty good chance of living a very vibrant life,” he said, adding that recovery time is “impossible to predict” but “it’s not going to be days.”

Kirk’s stroke is similar to the type of illness that struck Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid in 2005, at the age of 66. Reid was not hospitalized and made a full recovery.

Kirk was elected to the Senate in 2010, winning the seat formerly held by President Obama. he had previously agreed to sit with Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia this year for the president’s State of the Union Tuesday night. last year, he crossed the aisle to sit with Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., the no. 2 in the Senate.

“I was stunned to learn that Mark suffered a stroke,” Durbin said in a statement. “He is young and in good physical condition and I have no doubt he will make a speedy recovery. I have reached out to his staff and offered to do anything I can to help with his Senate duties. Loretta and I will keep Mark and his family in our prayers.”

Manchin said that while he will miss Kirk at the address, “I promised Mark that I will keep his seat warm.”

Extreme Plastic Surgery, “Artificial” Sex, and the Insane Death of Carolin Berger « The Left Hand of Feminism

Today’s post began as a response to ECHIDNE of the snakes. who brought Carolin Berger to my attention

She was a German erotic actor who died in her sixth breast enlargement surgery, at the age of 23:

She went under the knife for the last time at the Alster Clinic and was having 800g (28oz) of silicon injected into each breast.  But her heart stopped beating during the operation. She suffered brain damage and was put into an induced coma.the tabloid’s headline read: “the senseless death of Big Brother star Cora shocks the whole of Germany. ”(Her) frail, 48kg (106lb) body struggled against death for 224 hours. She lost. Cora is dead. …Her previous five operations were reportedly done at a private clinic in Poland which refused to admit her for a sixth time.

I kept going over those weight numbers, the amount of silicone to be injected into her and her body weight. Then I started thinking about the widespread impact of heterosexual pron on what women’s breasts should look like and how we now regard artificial breasts as really the natural ones, how seeing a very thin woman with very large breasts on television now looks normal, in the sense of averages. Porn has also affected the shaving of the pubic hair.

If it has done all that, surely it must have had some impact on general interpretations of sexuality and on the roles women and men take in sex?

I think that the cultural turn towards increasingly artificial bodies would indeed affect sexual habits and roles.

Women who are willing to alter their bodies dramatically are likely to engage in degrading and humiliating acts that do not sensually stimulate themselves, but, rather, their partners.  Of course, being able to excite their partners would theoretically also get them off.  Presumably, they would be more stimulated by partners who fit the roles that they have learned to find exciting–wealthy, powerful, dominant.  These are the very men for whom they are mutating their bodies, after all, the men for whom they (think they) live, presumably.

Or would it be more accurate to say that these women live entirely in the gaze, permanently disconnected from themselves as subjects, and utterly and only aware of themselves as objects?

I think that porn alters the mind and sexual experience because the culture has prepared the mind to alter.  We are all subject to deep and long patterns of dominant-submissive  behavior that are not at all “natural” in the sense of being permanent and unalterable.

In other words, it has not always been this way.  We have been humanoid, Homo Sapiens, upright, intelligent, and communal, for approximately 100,000 years.  Only about 10,000 years ago did human males begin to figure out how to dominate human females. Human females learned how to cope with that arbitrary and unnatural situation in various and often freakish ways.

Sexual desire is very malleable, easily manipulated–we know this.

But at what point does the subject who is experiencing sex as an object, and nothing but an object, utterly lose herself (or himself)?  At what point does the long-objectified self break down completely, in severe depression, catastrophic phobias, or addictions, or bizarre, disfiguring and self-destructive behaviors?

Coralin Berger seems to have broken down in the last sort of way.  We can imagine that she at one time had a sense of herself as a person, a girl, a young woman, before she became obsessed with her body, or, rather obsessed with the notion of herself as a body, a body that needed, in her eyes, continually to be improved.

We can speculate about the forces that influenced the way that she came to think of herself.  They are the forces that influence all of us: the family, the church, the schools, the juridical system, the economy.  There is also the increasing power of the media that manipulates our sense of ourselves as women, as men  (for some good examples, check out About Face and the film Generation M).  Each one of us resists these forces to the best of our abilities.

My question is: at what point do these forces drive us completely insane?  At what point does the self who struggles to think independently break down so completely that there is nothing left but a shell, thin, brittle, and driven to the operating table for the sixth and final fix?

Can’t remember the context in which it was being played on Nip/Tuck, but nonetheless, “Drive” by the Cars was on the radio while Sean was–how appropriate–driving Christian and having an Escobar Gallardo hallucination.

Pretty wild FX show (also home to Rescue Me, Damages and It’s always Sunny in Philadelphia) about a plastic surgery practice where the crazy patients often interact and become entwined in the lives of the main characters (Sean & Troy)–all in highly entertaining fashion I must say.

Also heard this playing ever so softly over the speakers at The Beer Store last week while fetching my brain medicine. now here it is, coming full circle and I have to agree, “they don’t make ‘em like they used to.”
