'He's a happy man': Docs release new pictures of Miami cannibal victim – WARNING GRAPHIC CONTENT

The homeless man who had half of his face chewed off by the Miami Cannibal is in good spirits, talking and walking, doctors said last night.

Ronald Poppo is temporarily blind but recovering well after suffering devastating injuries to nearly half of his face.

Hospital officials released two pictures of 65-year-old mr Poppo, who remains in the hospital in stable condition after the horrific Memorial Day weekend attack on the off-ramp of a bridge in downtown Miami.

One picture showed his face covered in scabs and missing most of his nose and both of his eyebrows and his eyes covered – one with gauze and the other with a skin flap.

In a second picture, he is seen walking with help from hospital staff.

"He’s had quite a bit of surgery," said Dr. Nicholas Namias, a trauma surgeon at Miami’s Jackson Memorial Hospital. "He’s feeling well. He’s eating. He’s walking around."

Police are investigating the attack that involved 31-year-old Rudy Eugene, who was found naked and chewing on Poppo’s face. Police shot and killed Eugene when he failed to respond to orders to stop attacking the man.

Law enforcement officials have speculated that Eugene may have been under the influence of a synthetic stimulant known as bath salts, which the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration has linked to side effects ranging from impaired perception of reality to agitation and delusional behavior.

When Poppo arrived at the hospital, "you couldn’t really make out his identity or what his facial features were," said Dr. Wrood Kassira, a University of Miami plastic surgeon on the medical team treating him.

Even now, she said, "when he smiles, it’s hard to see who he really is."

The attack has left Poppo blind in at least one eye and facing the risk of losing his vision permanently, the doctors said.

His "left eye was essentially destroyed and needed to be removed," said Kassira. "We’re hoping that in the future there may be some hope of some kind of vision but it’s unclear if he’ll recover any of it."

Poppo also suffered a brain injury in the attack. it did not result in any permanent damage but suggested the brutal nature of the incident. "It’s the sort of thing we see in car crashes usually," Namias said.

Poppo was treated for two puncture wounds in his chest that doctors said could have been from a bullet but were unable to determine what caused them.

Since his arrival, Poppo has undergone at least three surgeries and is expected to require more. in one operation, doctors removed skin from his forehead and scalp area to cover one of his eyes.

Still, Namias said Poppo was coping well with his injuries and had only briefly brought up the attack in a nighttime conversation with nurses.

"He’s really just sort of living in the moment and wants to talk about routine things," he said. "He’s very upbeat. He hasn’t said one thing negative to me."

"I’ve never used this word to describe someone before, but he’s charming, he really is," Namias said.

College-educated and a new York native, Pappo has lived on the streets of Miami for years.

No family members have visited him since he was hospitalized, Namias added.

Poppo is expected to remain in the hospital for a few more weeks. where he is moved after his treatment will depend on his medical needs, the doctors said.

A fund set up by the Jackson Memorial Foundation to help Poppo with his medical costs has raised about $15,000. He is also expected to qualify for Medicaid and Medicare, hospital officials said.

More details emerged about the homeless man Ronald Poppo whose face was horrifically eaten by Rudy Eugene. he was once a star student at a prestigious school in New York before he ended up homeless. according to a yearbook obtained by the New York Daily News, Poppo was a student at Stuyvesant High School in lower Manhattan and belonged to the Latin club.

Not much is known about the victim, apart from the fact that he had spent the last forty years in Florida. he was arrested 24 times for drinking, trespassing, felony, burglary, and assault.

Experts say Poppo’s face will be permanently disfigured and that he will face a bigger threat from infection rather than the injuries from the attack, according to Fox News. it seems that he will pull through but will require months of treatment to rebuild his facial features.

Dr. Seth Thaller, the chief of plastic and reconstructive surgery at the University of Miami’s Miller School of Medicine told Fox that the “human mouth is basically filthy” so those germs from Eugene’s mouth pose the most serious risk. 

A new footage emerged earlier showing the 65-year-old victim still moving around after the grisly 18 minute attack. it shows Poppo being rescued by paramedics after his attacker was shot dead by police. In the video, paramedics try to tend to the victim’s facial injuries and place him on a stretcher. The victim is seen waving his arms around as he is being taken to the ambulance and has to be restrained.

Police believe the cannibal attacker attended a Memorial Day weekend beach party and walked three miles home on foot in soaring temperatures of over 90F.

According to Miami Herald, it is believed that Eugene took off his clothes which were later found on the beach and the mainland, before attacking the homeless man who was sleeping on the train tracks. he strips and punches Poppo and straddles him before starting to chew his face off. The attack lasted nearly 20 minutes before police officer Jose Rivera intervened and shot him multiple times after Eugene refused to stop.

Bath salts are being blamed for the vicious behavior acted out by cannibal Rudy Eugene off a Miami highway on a sunny Saturday afternoon. The name sounds like a harmless household product, but it has no relation to actual bath salts – it is not the Epsom salts that we put in our baths for a relaxing soak.

Bath salts is a street name for a drug containing mephedrone or methylenedioxypyrovalerone (MDPV) and can be snorted, ingested or injected.  The effect of bath salts are comparable to LSD, cocaine and amphetamine. However, the effects of bath salt itself is described as being highly dangerous, with one physician saying that it is like cocaine times ten.

Symptoms that appear after taking the drug can be highly dangerous. it leads to hallucinations, body overheating, anxiety, paranoia, becoming delusional, heart attacks, extreme aggression, and even death. Bath salt users may also experience losing touch with reality, leading to psychotic behavior.

Officials say he portrays symptoms of “excited delirium” – a syndrome that turns drug users into raging “incredible Hulks”.  “I’m going by similarities in other cases of excited delirium I’ve researched in the last couple of days,” said Aguilar, president for the Fraternal Order of Police.

it is likely that Rudy Eugene took this drug in large amounts, causing his body to overheat, which explains why he was naked when he attacked the poor homeless man who was just sleeping under the Miami highway. Despite repeated orders from a police officer to stop eating the man, he simply growled at him like an animal and continued to savagely attack his victim.

Is Causeway Cannibal Victim Candidate for Face Transplant?

MIAMI (CBS4) — the victim of the causeway cannibal attack has been in the hospital for nearly two weeks. he will endure a lifetime of facial reconstruction following the attack that left him without most of his face.

CBS4’s Cynthia Demos asked the head of UM Miller School of Medicine Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Dr. Seth Thaller, if the victim Ronald Poppo was a likely candidate for a face transplant which would be the first one in Florida’s history.

“It’s not that easy to say ‘I’m going to do a face transplant’,” responded Dr. Thaller.

The first step in rebuilding the face of a victim like Poppo is stabilizing him, according to Dr. Thaller. “This is a horrific injury and an unusual mechanism for an injury.”

The mechanism used was Rudy Eugene’s mouth. A mouth is so full of bacteria that the first concern is infection because Eugene chewed off 75-percent of Poppo’s face.

The deranged Eugene gouged out one of Poppo’s eyes, and chewed off his forehead, nose, and lips, leaving only his chin intact.

There have been less than a dozen face transplants worldwide but the big difference between Poppo and the handful of patients who have successfully undergone the surgery is that the other patients were in good health, did not smoke, and were much younger.

Dr. Thaller said it’s more likely Poppo would undergo a series of skin grafts.

“the advantage to using your own tissue is you are already in a contaminated wound so if you use your own tissue there is a decreased chance of infection.”

When asked if it was possible to get all the necessary tissue, bone and other material needed from Poppo’s own body to reconstruct his face, Dr. Thaller replied, “It’s very possible, very possible and very probable.”

Dr. Thaller said there are so many options at this point, it’s unclear what exactly will happen but it will take a team of specialists and of course consent from the patient.

In the past, victims like Poppo likely would not have survived but with the advancements in medicine in the past five years Poppo’s case does not entirely shock the medical community.

Meanwhile, Poppo remains at Jackson Memorial Hospital facing months of treatment to rebuild his features and psychological care. the Jackson Memorial Foundation has set up a fund to assist him.
