Plastic surgery is not something most people think they will want or need. then, you start aging. while some of us age gracefully, some of us do not. sometimes you get undesirable age spots, or perhaps you have acne, freckles, or fine lines. have you ever considered trying to get those chicken pox scars removed?

A chemical peel is available over the counter. Perhaps you even have a friend who tells you how easy it is. maybe for them it was. Perhaps it would even be just as easy for you. it is recommended that you seek the advice of your doctor before you try to do this at home. even if you just want to be sure you’re not allergic to any of the chemicals you might introduce to your skin. so what does a chemical peel accomplish?

A chemical peel is when you use chemicals to cause your skin to blister. it is similar to sunburn. the skin underneath is going to have less visible scarring and hopefully give you a better appearance. A chemical peel is done to face, neck or hands. this will be done as outpatient plastic surgery. First they will wash excess oils from your skin. Caution will be taken with eyes and hair. A combination of chemicals will be applied to your skin. the skin will begin to blister and peel as though it has sunburn. during the chemical peel some patients feel stinging and burning. Some chemical peels will be done with pain relief. sometimes it is appropriate to just have a cool compress. Now what happens once you have this fabulous sunburned look?

As the skin peels new skin is visible. the effect is a more pleasing appearance. it will be vital that you use sunscreen, as this skin will be quite sensitive to actual sun exposure. Some patients may be prone to scarring, and sometimes you will find that you have some discoloration. Fair skinned, fair haired people tend to be the most responsive. while someone with a darker complication can have great results, uneven skin tone is more likely.

While most of the reasons people want chemical peels are cosmetic it is not only a cosmetic procedure. Chemical peels can help remove pre cancerous cells. These growths are not likely to grow back on the regenerated skin. your surgeon will discuss your reasons and expectations. You are a peel away from fresher, more vibrant, perhaps healthier skin.

How does a chemical peel feel?

Samantha LeBlanc, our medical aesthetician at our Austin plastic surgery practice demonstrates a chemical peel on me!  So…how exactly does a chemical peel work and why would someone want to have this experience?  The chemical peel solution causes mild trauma, or injury, to the epidermis or outermost layer of the skin. Similar to exfoliating your skin, the injury causes the damaged outer layers of the epidermis to peel away. As part of the healing process, increased cell growth produces new, healthier skin layers beneath, which give the face a more youthful, rejuvenated appearance.

Overall the experience is quite pleasant.  And can be relaxing- an escape from the busy day.  Depending on the type and depth of peel– peeling may begin 2-3 days after the treatment and can last up to 7-10 days.  Most patients experience a very nice glow to his/her skin over the first 24-48 hours.  Once the entire peeling process is complete- a new refreshed canvas has now been created. the goal, of course, is to stimulate collagen production, efface fine lines and reduce pore size.  Follow-up photos will be posted on our Facebook page.

Question: Can I eliminate circles around my eyes?

Answer: Sadly, no. Circles under the eyes cannot be fully eliminated. Pigmentation around the eyes is often genetic and, typically, there is not much you can do without a good concealer. however, there may be some options to help improve the appearance.

Age can contribute to some of the shadows under the eyes since this skin does thin as we get older, often exposing tiny blood vessels. Sometimes IPL laser treatments can give minor improvement, and a heavier chemical peel may tighten skin somewhat.

Another avenue to consider may be surgical with a lower lid eye lift (or blepharoplasty). This can help eliminate bags that are prolapsed fat from the eye socket. These fat pads can create shadows when the bags are severe enough, thus making the circles look even worse.

The surgery involves removing (or repositioning) fat and removing excess skin. This combination lessens the shadows cast by the bags. it also becomes easier to use concealer to cover the pigmentation.

Some people will choose to get fillers injected under their eye, thinking this will correct the contours of the eye socket. be careful! This is very technique-dependent and when not done well will lead to even more puffiness and a very unnatural appearance.

I do not tend to recommend this option, as I have seen too many patients who have been improperly overfilled who now seek my help for correction. in these cases, I can dissolve the filler with an enzyme treatment and then we can move forward with the proper approach if surgery is needed.

Plastic Surgery That Doesn’t Exist and Exaggerated Claims

The media might have you believe that plastic surgery can accomplish pretty much anything these days. If you have the money, hype would tell you that you can change your face, body, and turn back time sometimes all before your lunch hour is over. While there have been some amazing advancements in the field and technology and techniques are continually changing and improving, there are still limitations to plastic surgery.

Magazines and television broadcast flawless faces with skin as smooth and unlined as porcelain, but is this really achievable? For the general public, improvement of skin condition is certainly possible, but it can take several treatments and even years to sometimes even see noticeable changes. the biggest myth about flawless skin is that large pores, scarring, and birthmarks can be blasted away after one chemical peel or laser session.

Plastic surgery aims to lessen the appearance of such blemishes, but many lie deep within the skin, so deep that it may take multiple sessions of laser therapy or another skin treatment to start reaching the root of the problem. there are also some skin types and tones that are more resistant to even the most powerful treatments that are available.

While not a problem for most men, women have been lamenting cellulite-ridden thighs and buttocks for years. Treatments ranging from topical creams to painful deep tissue massages have been recommended, but experts still agree that nothing can permanently smooth out those dimples.

If you happen upon any plastic surgery procedures claiming they’ll finally banish that cellulite, approach the situation with skepticism. there are still no cosmetic fillers or surgical procedures that can successfully address the problem. If there really was a solution you can bet gossip magazines would no longer have editorials featuring unfortunate photos of celebrities visiting the beach.

Some people take body modification and cosmetic procedures to the extreme and are asking doctors if they can have their eye color permanently changed. Instead of having an extreme plastic surgery, buying contact lenses is the much safer, wiser option. That being said, there are in fact some surgeons who perform iris transplants and insert different discs of colors inside the eye much like an implanted color contact.

This type of surgery hasn’t been approved by the FDA or many other doctors. there are similar examples around of other extreme plastic surgery procedures that are performed usually illegally and overseas where finding medical help in case of an emergency may be difficult. Just because a procedure can be performed doesn’t mean that it should or that it is safe.

There are many other exaggerations surrounding plastic surgery that can be misleading to those seeking more accurate information. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Research is important, which means going directly to the source and speaking with board-certified plastic surgeons is the easiest way to get the facts straight. You can never be too cautious, and you certainly don’t want a supposed lunch-time procedure to turn into a lifetime regret.

I'm an aesthetician: I find your article a bit contradictory. You start off insinuating that products don't work, laser is the way to go. Then, you go back to saying use your product. true, laser is great to remove scars, but active acne is best to treat with products and peels. If you just do peels every month, you will continue to get acne during the down period. HOME CARE IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT! Double cleansing twice a day with a good professional product like (my preferences) A Natural Difference or Image for at home use is imperative. Over the counter products, usually don't have a good delivery system, so although, they are generally cheaper, you use more and don't get the same results Follow the cleansing with I recommend a combination of weekly peels (salicylic, cranberry enzyme, glycolic, oxygen treatments, Chiral A Enzyme, etc) for eight weeks and a deep peel (such as TCA, Jessner, ViPeel or Cabernet (especially great for Asian, Mediterranean & Afro American skin tones) quarterly.Synopsis: Peels are good, but not alone. Lasers are great for scars, but not active acne. Good acne home care habits using professional products combined with professional peels is your best start.

ASPS: Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Procedures Up in Men

More men appear to be undergoing cosmetic plastic surgery procedures, with overall procedures among men up 2 percent in 2010 as compared to 2009, according to statistics released March 21 by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

MONDAY, March 21 (HealthDay News) — more men appear to be undergoing cosmetic plastic surgery procedures, with overall procedures among men up 2 percent in 2010 as compared to 2009, according to statistics released March 21 by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).

The statistics revealed that men underwent more than 1.1 million cosmetic procedures in 2010, including minimally-invasive and surgical procedures. The fastest-growing procedures from 2009 to 2010 that were performed on at least 1,000 men in 2010 were facelift (14 percent increase), otoplasty (11 percent increase), soft tissue fillers (10 percent increase), Botulinum Toxin Type a (9 percent increase), liposuction (7 percent increase), breast reduction (6 percent increase), eyelid surgery (4 percent increase), dermabrasion (4 percent increase), laser hair removal (4 percent increase), and laser treatment of leg veins (4 percent increase).

The top five surgical procedures in men by volume in 2010 were nose reshaping (64,000), eyelid surgery (31,000), liposuction (24,000), breast reduction (18,000), and hair transplantation (13,000). The top five minimally-invasive procedures in men by volume in 2010 were Botulinum Toxin a (337,000), laser hair removal (165,000), microdermabrasion (158,000), chemical peel (90,000), and soft tissue fillers (78,000).

“The growth in cosmetic surgical procedures for men may be a product of our aging baby boomers who are now ready to have plastic surgery,” ASPS president Phillip Haeck, M.D., said in a statement. “Minimally-invasive procedures such as Botox and soft tissue fillers work to a point. However, as you age and gravity takes over, surgical procedures that lift the skin are necessary in order to show significant improvement.”

Smokers face new cosmetic surgery risk

Sometimes I look in the mirror and dream of something to make me look younger–more vibrant.  sure I’m not old, but I am not exactly a spring chicken anymore either.  a chemical peel? Laser resurfacing? How about I just go all out for a face lift to add years of youthfulness?  well, thankfully that process might be more promising and deliver the desired results–but only if I take one key step to help the process along.

According to recent research, if you do decide to make a visit to the plastic surgeon for a face lift specifically he or she will probably give you some pretty sound advice…you are strongly advised to stop smoking prior to the procedure.  why? well, obviously there are the respiratory dangers of smoking and the incidence of pneumonias and blood clots for smokers post operatively.  But your plastics guy is going to recommend you stop for another reason entirely. it appears that smokers have a higher rate of necrosis, or tissue death in and around the incision.

Necrosis is a special kind of tissue complication simply because it is a full fledged death of the tissue that ends up turning black and not re-growing.  Nothing like a big black outline on your face to permanently mar your attempt at beauty.  for some people the necrosis will require a skin graft to cover–a process that can be painful and scar.

The tissue death occurs as a result of impaired oxygen and blood flow to the tissues. Smokers have blood vessels that are usually more constricted than others which means that if blood can’t reach the tissues well then it will die.  and your attempt at better beauty will be for nothing.

After all, do you even want me to run down the list of what smoking does to your appearance? you know them by heart and if you are honest with yourself, you may even have some of these things… wrinkles, stained teeth, age spots, voice changes…all that stuff. so if you are fortunate enough to have that much cash just laying around for a major medical procedure like a face lift, I hope you take your doctor’s advice and quit smoking first–and sooner rather than later.
