Nose Job Notoriety

Morals don’t matter: As shown by your profile of Dr. Michael Salzhauer, the plastic surgeon who’s courted infamy with web videos like “Jewcan Sam” (“Boob Tube,” Michael E. Miller, June 21), we should not care if doctors like him are one of the soulless bastards from Nip/Tuck, with their mega money, fast cars, and loose morals, as long as they are good, talented plastic surgeons. The problem actually is that people expect other people to be perfect, and he is not. He has the gift of being a good doctor, but he does not have the gift of common sense. That should not matter, as long as his surgery is good. I would much rather get plastic surgery from him than from a sensitive, soft-spoken, mediocre doctor.

Hurting Homeowners

Money talks: of course the government will protect lenders and financial institutions, as you prove with your story about a questionable foreclosure firm getting sheltered by connected Florida officials while the investigators checking them out got fired (“Foreclosure Fraud,” Stefan Kamph, June 21). those firms have the money to bankroll and finance the government, while average citizens do not have that kind of clout, just a vote, which means nothing if there is no money. It’s always been like this, it will be like this for another 100 years, and there is nothing we can do. The one who has the money is the one who controls everyone.

Citizen

Get what we deserve: we live here. we elect our public officials. we allow them to continue to serve. we get the government we deserve. Florida institutionalizes low expectations. You can see it everywhere. Underachievement is the order of the day in education, public services, commercial services, and political office. By expecting too little from ourselves, we expect very little from others. The corruption of low expectations also infects Florida’s judicial system. it will change only if we change ourselves.

Youreminenece

Kill the status quo: it is time for all Floridians to stop arguing over Democrat or Republican, since they are two sides of the same coin. Neither party is looking out for our best interests. The only answer is to stop electing anyone who is connected with those parties, and stop re-electing people. when we show politicians that money will not work to buy our votes, we will get the government and the governmental services we deserve.

Animal Instincts

Adoption fiasco: The debate over whether to make the new Miami-Dade animal shelter a no-kill facility (“Animal Instincts,” Francisco Alvarado, June 21) just highlights what a poorly run place it is. My friend came down to adopt a dog, and they didn’t want to let her because she lives in Wellington. we had to fight them to get the dog out of there. it had an infected eye, a chest infection, and other health issues. My friend even offered to let them pick a vet and drive it over and she would pay all the bills. Finally, after three visits and the dog suffering there for a week and a half, she got the dog. it needed to have its eye removed. now the dog lives happily on a nice horse farm and is truly loved. they will adopt to anyone in Miami-Dade who won’t necessarily take care of the animal, but not to someone outside the county who wants to give it a good home!

Lcat29

Loosen the adoption standards: if you want to adopt one of these pets, you probably have to pay an adoption fee on top of registration or license fees. instead of killing the animals, the shelter should at least give them away for free to people who are willing to care for them. come on, these aren’t human babies whose potential parents’ backgrounds need to be thoroughly checked. I mean, I understand the animals might end up in worse conditions or potentially end up back at the shelter, but why not give people the benefit of the doubt? sure, not every pet would be adopted, but it might help. sometimes every problem is not just black-and-white. You can find solutions in the gray area.

Albert McKenna

Bleeding hearts: who exactly is going to pay for the caring and feeding of these animals at no-kill shelters? I love liberals and their feel-good policies. it is so easy to make these plans when it isn’t their money at stake.

Why Andrew Luck’s Supporting Cast Isn’t as Bad as You Think

No NFL team has undergone more extensive plastic surgery over the 2012 offseason than the Indianapolis Colts.

While most ball clubs spent the last few months applying new coats of paint to spruce up their look, the Colts bulldozed their roster to the ground with an epic vision of building a bigger and better team, brick by brick.

The blueprint starts with Andrew Luck. He’s the cornerstone of whatever identity this team plans to embrace moving forward. and while we can all see the virtue of going all-in on a prodigy like Luck, the fact is that it’s still a gamble. Peyton Manning is one of the 10 best quarterbacks in the history of the NFL and Luck has never played a single game on the professional stage.

From a common sense standpoint, opting for Luck over Manning was a slightly bold, mildly insane and totally admirable roll of the dice. but the fruits of this gamble can’t be truly understood until everyone shows their cards.

It’s the eternal question of present vs. future, wisdom vs. condition, proven champion vs. limitless potential. There’s no right or wrong answer until we see how good Luck really is or how well Manning has recovered.

There is a point at which Colts fans can ultimately say, “We made the right decision.” The question is: where is that point? If Peyton Manning is, indeed, one of the best slingers of all time, then at what point does the gamble on Luck pay off? does it begin and end with a championship? A dynasty? does Luck need to crack that all-time quarterback list for this experiment to be considered a true success?

Despite a whirlwind offseason for the Colts in which profound moves were made, the truth is that many questions still remain. until the Colts win a championship, the ghost of Manning will linger.

Decrow / AP

It’s a scary time for Colts fans.

Sure, you could describe it as “exciting” to alleviate the burden of the situation, but let’s be honest: This quarterback gamble is downright frightening for the Indianapolis faithful. If the Broncos make the playoffs and the Colts don’t, or if Denver goes further in the postseason than Indianapolis, it’s going to sting.

Like it or not, these teams are emotionally linked now.

On paper, you have to give the edge to the Broncos—at least for now. in addition to having a terrific defense, Manning’s illustrious history has earned him the benefit of any doubt in his abilities. Between these two teams, only one of them has a first-ballot Hall of Famer running their offense. plus, in the event that Manning goes down for any length of time with an injury, they have a remarkable insurance policy with Brock Osweiler.

Furthermore, there’s a divisional issue. The AFC West is weak enough for Denver to wrap up their division early and give Manning a few games to rest for the postseason. There’s no such luck for Indianapolis, as the AFC South has suddenly become Houston’s stomping ground.

If the Texans can improve upon their magical chemistry, then they’re most likely headed for a bye in 2012. Not only did they come within a hair of reaching the AFC championship last season with their third-string quarterback, they also strengthened their roster by cherry-picking some incredible rookies with Whitney Mercilus, Brandon Brooks, Jared Crick and Ben Jones.

The Colts will be locked in a dogfight with the Texans over possession of the AFC South. gone are the days of the Colts turning red when they see the Patriots on their schedule. From now on, the Texans are the team they need to beat to prove their worth as a contender.

The road to success will be difficult for the Colts in 2012. but at the same time, Colts fans have plenty of reasons to be hopeful. Andrew Luck’s supporting cast is much better than you probably think.

Drafting Coby Fleener was a stroke of genius. He’s a limber tight end with great hands and quick legs. Bulky and meaty, Fleener is the guy Luck will look to find on third down. He’s a finesse player who will be expected to block in a more down-and-dirty style. He can do it. He’s more than capable of playing physical football.

Fleener perfectly fills the void left by Jacob Tamme and Dallas Clark. plus, he’s played with Luck before, so he knows how this quarterback operates. Fleener provides Luck with a cushion. His presence on the field will allow Luck to shake out any jitters he may feel. He’s the best insurance policy in the world.

Tight end Dwayne Allen has the potential to be a game changer on the field. He’s a quick and nimble athlete who runs perfect routes and has enough shake-and-bake moves in his repertoire to create windows of separation. He’s athletically gifted and has the ability to fight, flip and squirm for those precious few extra yards. He’s a playmaker. If he can stack some more muscle on his frame, he’ll be a true presence in the NFL.

Vick Ballard was also a tremendous pickup for the Colts. He’s a full-contact, no-nonsense threat on the inside. He doesn’t have elite speed, but he makes up for it with elite energy. with a high football IQ and tremendous patience, Ballard reminds me of a younger BenJarvus Green-Ellis with a higher ceiling.

Not only is he a capable running back, he’s also willing to sacrifice his body to make the necessary blocks on the field.

The Colts have serious depth on their roster. Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis are still the men who strike fear in the hearts of opponents. Reggie Wayne and Cory Redding are deep wells of wisdom who are still killing it on the field.

Look for T.Y. Hilton to have an impact. Austin Collie could really find has groove with a guy like Luck controlling the flow of the offense. plus, the Colts have Adam Vinatieri, who’s still the best kicker in the history of the league.

Minchillo / AP

One more name worth mentioning: Chandler Harnish. It’s easy to forget about the Colts’ other quarterback selection in the 2012 draft because of all the hysteria around Luck. Granted, that hysteria is well deserved. but still, my golden rule for building a strong team is to have competent backups.

Why? because everything that can go wrong will absolutely go wrong. That’s life in the NFL.

When Tom Brady went down in the 2008 season-opener with a devastating injury, Matt Cassel stepped in and won 11 games. Last year, the Texans nearly steamrolled their way to the conference championship, despite a multitude of injuries to their entire roster, including their top two quarterbacks.

Harnish is a very solid backup to have at the quarterback position. He isn’t great, but the kid has skills. He’s an agile, mobile athlete with sharp intelligence and excellent patience. He’s a thoughtful slinger who can roll out and extend the play with his pure athleticism. He’s a good weapon to have when you’re rebuilding a team from the floorboards up.

All in all, the Colts are a tremendously well-balanced team. As to whether or not the decision to part ways with Peyton Manning was a good choice, well, only time will tell. but when a kid like Luck is available, it’s tough not to pounce on him. His skill set is simply too extreme and too brilliant to ignore.

The question that Colts fans need to answer is: What constitutes a successful 2012 season? 8-8? 10-6? 6-10? Wild Card round? Divisional round? You make the call.

As of now, everything is up in the air for Indianapolis. The only certainty for the Colts in 2012 and beyond is that nothing will ever be the same again.

GH Thoughts « Eye on Soaps

By Katrina Rasbold

I’ve got to give it to GH. They’re writing some good, soapy stuff with the most recent Scrubs story. I have never particularly been a fan of Robin and Patrick as a couple. Don’t know why and it’s no particular reason I can point to specifically. they just never moved me. I did find it oddly out of character for Robin to just make plans to take off to Africa and leave her family without talking it over with her husband first. I found it out of character for Patrick to cheat on Robin. The whole story felt out of whack at that point. It has, however, emerged into a rather interesting tale of two women: one who is betrayed and one who is a lot little bit nuts. I find myself curious to see how it plays out.

I thought it felt forced to hear Maxie trying to convince Robin to forgive Patrick so soon after his betrayal. these things take time. It was obvious from the conversation that she was reacting from her own situation with Spinelli rather than any degree of common sense. Patrick also seemed to think that Robin should just get over her snit and take him back for the sake of the family. My thought is that it is not her responsibility to think of the sake of the family after he threw caution to the wind in regard to the family when he went to bed with Lisa. if he’d considered the impact of his actions on his family at that time, she would not have to consider the impact of her actions now. she should not have to hurry up and get over her indignation and anger at his betrayal for the family’s benefit.

Like Dr. Phil says, in the case of adultery, you keep working at making up for it “until.” until she’s done and ready to put it all behind her, you keep apologizing and making up like crazy. you can’t walk in and smash up a priceless vase and then get pissed that the other person doesn’t glue it back together again fast enough.

Note to Maxie, Patrick, Steve, Robin and Matt: for now and future suggestion, please don’t discuss your plots in public where people can hear you. Bad, bad idea. Note to GH: thank you for the Mac scene. Yum!

I was surprised to hear Carly being aware and plugged in enough to say that Michael is “broken” and flinches. I’m surprised she even noticed. I’d be broken and flinching too if every time I walked into a room, people were having sex in it. I mean seriously, doesn’t Lulu have her own house? do they not know that Michael lives there and is likely to be, I dunno, being there from time to time? Is it essential that they have sex in places other than the bedroom all the time? C’mon, kids. Grow up a bit. as they say, “Get a room, already!”

Back to Carly and her vengeance against Dante, I think it speaks volumes that Michael seems to get along OK with both Lulu and Dante, except for the ongoing inadvertent voyeurism, but Carly can’t get past her own fierce determination for frontier justice. we all find ways to give our life purpose and it looks like she’s found hers.

Exsqueeze me? Baking powder? Did I actually hear Olivia say that Johnny should “call it even” with Sonny? Even after Sonny verbally and emotionally abused his beloved sister, tried to kill him with a car bomb and framed him for murder? In the real mob world, just calling your sister a whore would be grounds for being killed and that happened around a thousand times. I’d say we’re pretty far from even here.

I’m still rubbed that Olivia is even cordial to Sonny after he shot their unarmed son at point blank range. “Say goodbye, detective” isn’t erased by following it up with, “I wouldn’t have shot him if I’d known he was my son.” Doesn’t Sonny realize that with the baby bullets he’s been shooting, pretty much anyone younger than he is could be his child? He’s likely got kids lined up from Bensonhurst to San Jose. He’d do well to never shoot or have sex with anyone ever again because there’s a pretty good chance they’re related.

I’m stunned, and I’m not sure why I should be, that the one person who is fully qualified to call Sonny on his total B.S. has sucked down the Kool-Aid and is on the Sonny Defense train like everyone else. if anyone knows what hell Sonny has wrought on people, it’s Brenda. Wasn’t that why they broke up at one point? Did I hear, “You have a temper, you’re not stupid?” Did I imagine I heard that based on what she said or did that actually come out of her mouth? she is one of the ones who suffered most from Sonny’s abuse. she was there when he gave drugs to 17-year-old Karen Wexler and pushed her into becoming a stripper. she was there when Lily got blown up because of him. I mean seriously, the guy shot his wife in the head while she was giving birth to their son THROUGH THE GUY WHO WAS DELIVERING THE BABY. He nearly blew up his own daughter and he shot his own son. she is going to make this OK for him? She’s justifying it?  Wha? The only thing Brenda should have been saying while Sonny rattled off his list of sins to her was, “You did what? you what? WHAT?!” The look on her face should have been abject horror, not sympathy and absolution! this guy has been on a seventeen year terror rampage of Port Charles and everyone thinks he is just dandy. The viewers are like the little kid in the story “The Emperor’s new Clothing” who is the only one who realizes the guy is naked! Everyone else is busy raving about what a great outfit he’s wearing.

His lieutenant, however, needs to be given a badge and fast! Jason has proven that he is a much better cop than either Dante or Ronnie. if they put him through the Police Academy Crash course, they’d have all of Port Charles’ dead case files solved in nothing flat. It definitely gives new meaning to that old Ghostbusters line of, “Who y’gonna call?” Not the cops, that’s for sure. I’d have Jason in speed dial. Even Suzanne knows that and she’s never met the guy.

Elizabeth is going to have quite a surprise when she comes back from Sarah’s and finds that Brook has moved in on her non-territory! Wonder what kind of dynamic that will set up, especially if Lucky has moved on to someone else?

Slowly, but surely, we are seeing the return of good ol’ human interaction and personal relationship drama taking over GH and personally, I couldn’t be more thrilled. I do realize we will probably always have things blowing up and high Man Drama going on, but for me, I prefer the “old school” formula for soaps that’s about lyin, cheatin, back stabbin and switchin paternity tests.

Speaking of which, shouldn’t Helena have found her way back into the picture by now? A basement full of Cassadines would sure make my day!

Lastly, I’d like to put a call in to Ned and Lois who have some serious explaining to do. as I recall, Lois took baby Brook Lynn and went back to Bensonhurst because she felt that the Quartermaines and Ned were a bad influence on her child. this is the best she could offer as an alternative? The moral and upstanding Cerullo family is what created this shyster? The biggest difference between the underhanded, low-down, back-stabbing, undermining, devious crap the Quartermaines pull and what Brook Lynn does is that they are at least good at it. now that Brook is no longer needed as the Lante spoiler, you can hear the chatter of “What to do? what to do?” when it comes to her next story. for now, we get the chemistry test between Brook and Nikolas to see if anything sticks. I did love the scene where Brook called Alexis on leaving Ned at the altar. It cut right to the chase of who in the room had no right to be giving anyone romantic advice.

See you in two weeks, folks!

Tips for Minimizing Scaring Following Facial Plastic Surgery

Any good plastic surgeon knows that incisions and the resulting scars are extremely important to patients. no matter how the size or scope of surgery, people care what their incisions look like and the scars that result, it is safe to say that nobody wants their incisions to be deforming, even more so as it relates to the face. this article covers some common sense rules for minimizing scarring associated with a surgical incision.

Before we get into that topic however, it is important to note that anytime an incision is made, there will be some sort of mark on the skin in that location. by the very definition, plastic surgery inherently implies the creation of a wound and, consequently, all wounds create scar. The key to minimizing a scar is to make well planned-out, minimally-traumatic incisions that heal well and are minimally noticeable.

A scar is actually nothing more than in incision that might not have healed optimally or has become noticeable. It is also important to note that scars are inherently subjective. what one person may regard as a scar, someone else might regard as a non-issue.

1. Proper Wound Care Post Surgery

The first principle, and probably the most important, is to simply decrease the chance of scarring and optimize incision healing with proper initial wound care. this starts the moment the operation is over and is really not complicated; in fact, it is essentially in line with what your mom probably taught you about getting that skinned knee to heal when you were 10 years old. Limited motion is helpful in the initial stages of healing. One wants to not re-traumatize an incision/wound that is healing – so no picking or scratching or rubbing.

Also, preventing infection is a key concept. If a wound gets infected, it gets re-traumatized and the whole healing process will be set back. this is why most doctors will place their patients on antibiotics prior and/or after a surgical procedure. this is also why your doctor will tell you to clean your incision with antiseptics and apply antibiotic ointment. a further benefit of using an emollient (moisturizer) like antibiotic ointment is that wounds heal more quickly in moist environments. Emollients also improve the overall health of the skin surrounding the wound. Lastly, most of us have realized at this point that the sun and its UV radiation can be damaging to the skin – this is especially true for healing incisions. One must not sunburn or tan his/her incisions. this not only slows the healing process but may permanently darken the incision and thus make it more noticeable.

2. after the Incision has Healed

The next concept is also simple. once the wound has healed and the sutures are out (7-10 days later), one wants to optimize the collagen deposition so that the most favorable result occurs. Collagen is the most abundant ingredient in normal, healthy human skin. there are several products that are useful for optimizing the deposition of collagen if they are used 8-10 weeks after surgery, but not much benefit is seen thereafter. Again, please staying out of the sun as much as possible, and if you do go in the sun, use >30 SPF sunscreen during healing and for at least the first 6 months after surgery.

3. once a Scar is Evident

This is really a topic for a different article, but the reader should find solace in knowing there are good options – options that range from steroid injections to dermabrasion to laser resurfacing to scar revision surgery. One specific recommendation that I have seen some success with is the application of silicone impregnated bandages or gels (i.e. invincible, etc.). Despite much research on this topic, the medical community hasn’t figured out how exactly this works at the molecular level, but it does provide benefit in most patients.

PIP breast implants: MPs condemn NHS stance in England

27 March 2012 Last updated at 21:00 ET Share this page By Nick Triggle Health correspondent, BBC News The implants were manufactured by the French company Poly Implant Prothese (PIP)

The stance taken in England on replacing PIP breast implants – at the centre of a health scare – "flies in the face of common sense", MPs say.

Patients who had implants privately can have them removed, but not replaced, on the NHS if the clinic will not help.

The Commons Health Committee said that meant patients being operated on twice and urged the NHS to remove and replace, with a charge for the latter.

Ministers said allowing people to pay for treatment would set a precedent.

The system called for by MPs would probably see patients paying about £1,500 for replacement on the NHS unless their private clinic agreed to cover the cost.

The cross-party group said the current position seemed to be putting women off having the implants removed.

They said doing it in one procedure made much more sense on both economic and safety grounds.

A review of the implants safety was ordered earlier this year because of conflicting data about the risk of the implants rupturing and leaking non-medical grade silicone into the body.

They were made by the French company Poly Implant Prothese (PIP).

‘Clinically inadequate’

Health Committee chairman Stephen Dorrell said the stance at the moment was "clinically inadequate".

He added: "It flies in the face of common sense to put women through two procedures when one will do."

But he said the health service in England should not go as far as the NHS in Wales, which has offered the removal and replacement, as it was not right for the taxpayer to pick up the bill for what was a cosmetic procedure.

Northern Ireland and Scotland have similar policies to England.

The recommendation was one of a series made by MPs in their report on the issue.

About 47,000 women in the UK are thought to have been given PIP implants – 95% of whom underwent private operations.

The government has already ordered two reviews looking at the regulation of cosmetic procedures in general and the reaction to the scandal in the UK.

The MPs said it was essential some key shortcomings were addressed by those inquiries.

In particular, they highlighted the power of the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency, which issued an alert in March 2010 telling surgeons they should stop using PIP implants.

Such alerts require the NHS to respond saying they will not use the devices – but no such response is required from private clinics.

They also said it was important that a proper audit of which patients were getting which implants was kept in the future.

Fazel Fatah, president of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, said changing the NHS stance on removal would "provide reassurance" to those women who were not getting support from their private clinics.

But Health Minister Lord Howe said: "I understand that the prospect of two operations is difficult and distressing for women, but it is a founding principle of the NHS that people don't pay the NHS for treatment.

"if we allowed patients to pay for treatment in this case, it would set a precedent for other treatments and cosmetic surgery. The responsibility for this sits squarely with private providers."

Jane Brown: "The surgeon said I'd look pretty awful if I had them taken out, but I feel like I don't have any choice"

When Can You Have Sex After Plastic Surgery?

Truthfully, many people want to have plastic surgery to not only boost confidence, look more rejuvenated, appear more youthful, but they also want to feel more sexy.

So, when can you get it on again after your procedure, the answer is, it depends on the individual and type of surgery, but some common sense applies too.

Basically, you want to feel recovered, in little to no pain, and have your surgical incisions closed before you get back to your significant other.

Mentally and psychologically, it isimportant to have plastic surgery for you, and not necessarily for others. if you are secure and confident before surgery, then after you heal and are not in much pain, you should feel confident to have fun with your partner in crime as soon as possible after plastic surgery.

Plastic Surgery involves surgery, so you probably will not feel comfortable with physical intimacy until some of the swelling, bruising, and pain has gone away. of course, this depends on the location of your surgery, number of locations, and how quickly you heal, but it is generally safe to have sex when your body tells you that it is not in significant pain.

Generally, if you have surgical incisions you will want them to be healed and closed up before pursuing rigorous activity.you do not want to have plastic surgery, and then have a slight separation of your scars due to over-exuberance with your partner. Allowing your incisions to heal is a good indicator of when you will be ready for a return to fun.

It is always best to ask your plastic surgeon about the right time to return sex, and only he or she knows, after talking to you and examining you, when the best time is for you and your body.

Chinese Woman Wants To Look Like Jessica Alba

Full disclosure: I came across this story from the ladies at Disgrasian, which in turn got the story via the journalissimos from Reuters. so this post is one level lower than blogspam, for those who like to nitpick these things. The quick summary is that there’s a girl in China named Xiaoqing who broke up with some schmuck. he apparently had a major hard-on for Jessica Alba. so in an attempt to win him back, she has decided to get plastic surgery in order to look like Jessica Alba.

I found the story morbidly fascinating for multiple reasons.

1. Asians and plastic surgery angle2. Jessica Alba ethnic confusion irony angle3. Feminist angle4. Self-confidence angle

But most importantly, it’s just like a car crash I can’t stop staring at. other bloggers have already pointed out the complications of surgery, the girl’s terrible self-esteem, and her utter lack of common sense. but there are a few things people have overlooked.

First of all, does she think plastic surgery is a cakewalk? It’s not as if magical beauty wizards can just put Clayface clay on her face and then mold a new visage. There’s cutting, shaving of bone, tucking, pulling, and all matters of grotesque actions taken. Also, Jessica Alba has pretty big eyes and eyelid surgery has its limits. that is, unless Xiaoqing doesn’t mind having to use wetting drops for the rest of her life because her eyelids no longer close all the way.

But wait, the article says the doctors have agreed to do the surgery for free in order to showcase their skills. how nice of them. but you know what this suggests to me? these MDs smell an opportunity and are looking to capitalize on it. If their surgery is successful, maybe thousands of Chinese girls will sign up to become celebrity changelings. Cha-ching! If they mess up, then at least Xiaoqing got the level of service she paid for.

Even more surprising is how this idea formed in the first place. The Reuters article says:

“My friends… kept consoling me but it did not work, so they suggested I do plastic surgery to look like her (Jessica Alba).”

Who are these friends who casually recommended she alter her face to look like a movie star? Were they joking? If not, they are just terrible human beings without an ounce of common sense. Isn’t there an 8:1 ratio between men and women in China anyway? just find another guy.

I guess the bottom line here is that infatuation can lead to creepy things. And no matter how creepy an idea is, there’s someone out there with no qualms about being an enabler.
