Americans had nearly 14m cosmetic procedures last year, spending $10.1bn in the process – on collagen and botox injections, breast implants, buttock lifts and nose jobs.

The data published recently only includes total procedures, but latest gender figures from the Association (from 2010) shows that male procedures are on the rise – including 18,280 breast reductions (+6% on 2010), 63,585 nose jobs (-4%) and 13,217 hair transplants (+2%)

Recent statistics show that Australian men are catching up to the global trend and are increasingly opting for cosmetic procedures. The 2012 annual survey conducted by the Cosmetic Physicians Society of Australasia (CPSA) in collaboration with Costhetics.com.au revealed that nearly 40 percent of the participants know men who have undergone cosmetic medical treatments like laser hair removal, IPL skin rejuvenation or botulinum toxin injections. nearly a quarter also knew men who have had cosmetic surgery.
Participants of the CPSA-Costhetics survey were predominantly female (97%) and were fully supportive of a man’s right to have cosmetic procedures. Over 63 percent said they were currently living with partners.
When given the choice between ‘There are things I would like to change about my partner’s appearance’ and ‘I like my partner just the way he/she is’, 735 of the 751 survey participants made a choice; and nearly one third (31%) noted that they would like to change things about their partner’s appearance.
The changes they would like to see included weight (36%), stomach (32%), hair (27%), facial aspects like loss of volume or sagging jowls (23%), wrinkles (19%) and veins/sunspots (17%). A few expressed the desire to see changes in their partner’s chest, bottom, ears and nose, among other things.
The participants’ attitudes towards men having cosmetic enhancement provide an indication of how Australian attitudes are changing. an overwhelming majority (97%) thought it more acceptable now than in the past for men to have non-surgical cosmetic treatments like laser hair removal, anti-wrinkle injections or microdermabrasion. Similarly, 92 percent felt it more acceptable for men to undergo cosmetic surgery such as a breast reduction or nose surgery than in the past.
When asked ‘What do you think about men who have cosmetic treatments?’, 714 of the 751 survey participants answered the question, selecting from among multiple options. “I think every man has the right to choose if they want to have a cosmetic treatment”, said 65 percent of the respondents, while 42 percent felt “It’s great that men now have these options available to them”. nearly 40 percent of the respondents ticked the option, “If women can choose to have a treatment, why can’t men”.
A very small minority were opposed to the idea of men opting for cosmetic medicine. “I think it’s a bit odd”, said 4 percent of those who answered this question. “I think it’s vain”, said 2 percent. nearly 7 percent found it a turn-off. just a handful (0.7%) found men who have cosmetic treatments a turn-on.
Over 65 percent of the survey participants claimed to have had one or more non-surgical cosmetic procedures. Over 80 percent said their reasons for the procedures were purely aesthetic, such as to reduce signs of ageing or to gain fuller lips.
When asked how likely they were to consider having a non-surgical cosmetic procedure in the future, half the participants deemed it likely, while 15 percent said they definitely would. The rest (35%) said they were either unlikely or highly unlikely to consider it.
“Australians are embracing cosmetic medicine at an increasing rate”, says Louisa McKay, Director of Costhetics. “A press release from the CPSA last April revealed a 15 percent increase in spending on non- and minimally-invasive treatments in the previous 12 month period. This figure represents an estimated total spend of $644.7 million, which is double that of the $300 million estimate by the CPSA for 2008”.

Specialist agencies catering to foreigners seeking to undergo general medical treatment in Switzerland say they are seeing more customers enquiring about cosmetic treatments and plastic surgery on the side.
Gregor Frei, head of Swiss Health, established several years ago to promote Swiss medical services abroad, told swissinfo.ch that Switzerland’s reputation for quality in luxury products has spread abroad to plastic and cosmetic treatments. “We have noticed that there is more and more demand, not only in the area of plastic surgery but also for reconstructive surgery after treatment for breast cancer or after an accident,” Frei said. “We were in China a few months ago and there we really noticed that Switzerland has a certain reputation in aesthetic medicine and plastic surgery.” Anna Kosmina, director of the agency Rayan Partners, an advisory service to foreigners looking to access a range of services in Switzerland, said her company receives around 15 to 25 enquiries a week – sometimes more – from clients seeking information about plastic surgery in Switzerland and this doubles when including all cosmetic procedures. “It is about quality, Switzerland is renowned for it. also it is a very small country so it is easier to guarantee the quality because there is more control over services,” Kosmina said.

Sobhani said “a large portion” of Swixmed clients were referred by the private banking sector and estimated that 40 per cent of his clients wired fees from Swiss bank accounts, indicating they had a prior connection with Switzerland from which they built up a level of trust. Sobhani added that often the friends or relatives visiting patients in Switzerland for complex medical treatments would ask for additional cosmetic surgery treatments while they were in the country. For Frei and Kosmina, a perception of Swiss discretion was also an important factor in foreign clients choosing Switzerland for such services. “It’s something to do with culture and mentality because here people prefer to be more natural and discreet and this is reflected in the plastic surgery,” Kosmina said. “Confidentiality is also a big thing, they prefer to do it where nobody knows them.”
With most such procedures paid for directly by the client, few statistics – usually collected by insurance companies or government agencies – are available to quantify by just how much the industry is growing. According to a 2011 report by Euromonitor International, Switzerland’s medical tourism sales are expected to grow 20 per cent from SFr850 million ($947 million) in 2010 to SFr1.021 billion in 2015. Sobhani said that demand for plastic surgery and cosmetic treatments was growing in line with demand for general medical services from abroad. Clients from countries with rapidly growing middle classes such as Russia and China, but also from the former Soviet states and the Gulf states, are increasingly interested in Swiss plastic surgery services, says Frei. Kosmina notes that compared with two years ago, the numbers of clients from countries including Egypt, Syria and Greece has dropped in line with changes in social and economic conditions in those countries.
She says that Chinese clients in particular are “very enthusiastic” about animal cell treatments offered by exclusive medical and wellness resorts such as Clinique la Prairie in Montreux. A spokeswoman for Clinique la Prairie, Arian Repond, told swissinfo.ch in an email response to questions that demand from foreigners for cosmetic surgery and treatments “is always growing”. She said “revitalisation” treatments – in which a concentrated solution of biologically active substances extracted from young lamb livers are administered orally over two days – was the most popular treatment programme with the clinic’s clients, most of whom are foreign. “For our programmes, most patients come principally from China, Russia, Latin America and Europe,” Repond said. “And very often they also visit our centre for aesthetic medicine. Every nationality has particular demands.” Sobhani said that Chinese clients tended to ask more for aesthetic procedures such as eye corrections to make their eyes more rounded, and Swixmed would often refuse the more outlandish requests for cosmetic surgery treatments. “There are the standard procedures but for the Saudis for example, what we see is that they are more interested in procedures about weight loss, liposuction and tummy tucks; while for the Russians what we see is much more about breast or face,” said Sobhani.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons released their annual procedural statistics report yesterday, showing a 5 percent increase in cosmetic procedures for 2010.
According to the ASPS, 13.1 million procedures were performed in the U.S. last year, including plastic surgery and minimally invasive cosmetic treatments. 5.3 million reconstructive procedures were performed as well, showing a 2 percent increase for the year.
The society says this corresponds with a nationwide attitude that the recession is over. “The increase in cosmetic plastic surgery mirrors the rise in consumer confidence throughout most of 2010,” says the official press release.
Plastic Surgery Trends
In 2010, American plastic surgeons performed approximately 1.6 million surgical procedures, and the most popular of those are the following top five:
The stats for 2010 are showing a rise in the number of facelift surgeries, reportedly 9 percent more than the previous year.
Breast augmentation surgeries increased a modest 2 percent, with silicone gel breast implants now used in 60 percent of the procedures.
Across the board, body contouring after weight loss showed continued growth in popularity. Body lift, arm lift, breast lift and thigh lift all showed a substantial gain.
ASPS President Phil Haeck MD suggests that people have been waiting out the recession to undergo a surgical procedure. “There’s some pent up demand for cosmetic surgical procedures,” he said. Now he says according to “all indications,” they are once again “willing to spend more to look better.”
Non-Surgical Cosmetic Trends
Non-surgical cosmetic treatments also increased, at about 11.6 million procedures during 2010. The most common were Botox, injectable fillers, laser hair removal, chemical peel and microdermabrasion.
While injectable fillers remain popular, fat grafting seems to be back on the rise. Injections of autologous fat are up 14 percent, according to the ASPS, a trend Dr. Haeck says “could reflect how a patient’s own fat is being used in more creative ways to rejuvenate the face and body.”
