Cosmetic surgeons can dial back the hands of time

If you want to guess someone’s age, look at her hands.

Exercise and the right clothes can make our bodies look more youthful. Makeup and anti-wrinkle cream can keep our faces young. but for the most part, our hands have had little to protect them from the ravages of time.

Until recently. Cosmetic surgeons now offer a number of treatments to give aging hands a youthful appearance. People are taking advantage of them, too, particularly those who have cosmetic work done on other parts of their bodies.

“A lot of folks realize that the hands give them away,” says Dr. Janet Turkle, a plastic surgeon in Indianapolis. “If they have a face-lift and they get all prettied up, all of a sudden, they’re looking at hands that don’t match.”

It’s a dynamic that Indianapolis plastic surgeon Bruce Van Natta expects will only increase over time. He, too, has patients who invest in a face-lift, then suddenly notice their hands.

“I think it’s something we’re going to see more and more as the boomers age,” he says. “They’re a little more attuned to this.”

Want to keep your hands looking young as you age? be sure to use sunscreen on them whenever you head outside.

And if you want to give your hands an extra boost, you might consider using a Retin-A product on the back of the hands to improve collagen and thickness, says Dr. Bruce Van Natta, a plastic surgeon in Indianapolis.

Facial products that contain vitamins C and E may prove helpful for the hands, says plastic surgeon Janet Turkle.

But for the very best protection, remember that sunscreen.

For Eileen Bewley, 53, the wake-up call came in the treble voice of a child.

A few years ago, Bewley was sitting on an airplane, chatting and laughing with the little girl next to her, when the girl looked down and asked, “Why do you have old-lady hands?”

The question did not completely take Bewley by surprise. Fit, with blond hair and a self-described tendency to “act goofy,” Bewley frequently found herself mistaken for someone younger. Then her hands, which she described as being “skinny and wrinkled and veiny” would give her away.

Prompted by this little girl’s tell-it-like-I-see-it question, Bewley decided to do something about her hands. she had Turkle inject Juvederm, a filler, to plump out her hands and give them a more youthful appearance.

Interest in so-called “hand lifts” has increased in the past five years, says Dr. Michael Fiorillo, a plastic surgeon in New York City, with people staying in the work force longer. they may take pains to keep their faces youthful, but their hands stand out.

“You see men in a business suit and the only thing showing in a business suit is your face and the back of your hands,” he says.

Turkle sees mostly women seeking treatment on their hands, presenting problems that range from thin skin such as Bewley’s to dark, telltale age spots.

All of the same unseemly things that happen elsewhere as we age also transpire in our hands. they can wrinkle, develop age spots and lose fat. Mix in sun damage — after all how many of us remember to spread that sunscreen down to our digits? — and you have a recipe for granny hands.

Fuller looking

That’s where plastic surgeons enter the picture. if your hands’ thinned appearance bothers you, you can rejuvenate them in various ways. A doctor can inject a filler such as Radiesse or Juvederm. this makes the veins less prominent, not unlike blowing up a balloon, Fiorillo says.

“You can kind of plump up the back of the hand. A lot of times you see the veins and tendons, and that makes the hand look a little older,” Turkle says. “A youthful hand is a little fuller and plumper. if you look at an older hand, you see a lot more veins.”

In the past five years, filler use has taken off, Turkle says. Fillers are used in many places, including earlobes that some people feel look too thin and wrinkly. using filler on hands would probably cost about $900 for both hands, assuming each requires one filler. Typically, these fillers last six months to a year, and the more times you have this done, the longer each treatment seems to last, Turkle says.

For some, the filler effect can last even longer. Elaine Shaw had her hands done three years ago and has not returned. Shaw, 68, did only one hand for starters.

“I had the one done first, to see if I liked it,” she says. “You could really tell the difference when you had them side by side.”

Today, her hands still look younger, with the veins more concealed. her face had always looked younger than her years, thanks to a sunscreen habit, and now her hands match, she says. she treats herself to manicures, and the combined effect draws comments.

“A lot of times I will be signing a credit card or at the bank and they will say, ‘Oh you have pretty hands,’ ” she says. “For me that’s a reaffirmation that they look nice.”

Not everyone, however, is a fan of fillers.

Van Natta, a plastic surgeon with Meridian Plastic Surgeons in Indianapolis, prefers to use about an ounce of a person’s own grafted fat as a filler. Not only does this method last indefinitely, it also produces a better appearance, he says. however, it takes longer — about 2 1 / 2hours — and costs $4,500 to $5,000.

Age spots

For many people, it’s not just a matter of thin skin but also sun-damaged skin with freckles and sunspots. Lasers and other techniques can help with that.

“Probably the ultimate treatment would be to do both — one is providing volume and the other is treating the surface of the skin to make the texture better and to get rid of some of the pigmentation and uneven appearance to the skin,” Van Natta says.

In fact, much of what you can do to improve your face, you can do to your hands, Turkle says. Microdermabrasion will stimulate the collagen, removing the top dead layer, and giving the skin a healthier appearance. Lasers will help erase brown sunspots and other discolorations.

Years ago, when Susan Norton tanned, she never thought about what all those rays might do to her hands. as she hit her 40s, though, her hands started to display dark age spots. she hated them. she would often cross her arms or hold them down to hide what she considered her unsightly hands.

“It really bothered me to the point where I would cover up my hands a lot,” says Norton, 55. “I was so self-conscious of my hands. my mom’s 86 and her hands look better than mine.”

After three treatments with a light laser, however, Norton loves the way her hands look. When her treatments ended about two months ago, Norton decided she was so pleased with the result that she would have laser work done on her face.

After all, she figures, her face should look as good as her hands.

Women Need to Love Themselves MORE

  • PLASTIC SURGERY: It should come as no surprise that many women tend to have low self-esteem, especially young women. they want to get work done just to feel wanted/accepted. now, we’re not persecuting those who go under the knife. We promote plastic surgery to an extent, and feel women should get cosmetic work done if only it makes them happy, not because someone wants them to do it. for instance, I have a friend who got her breasts done because her boyfriend wanted her to have bigger boobs, now she’s miserable with her extremely large breasts for her small frame, but she did it to make him happy. Bad move. this is now something she has to live with whether he stays or he goes. You should always do what makes you happy. If it is something you want, go for it, but don’t do it for somebody else. I cannot stress enough how the most important person in a relationship is YOU. You should do what makes you happy and if you don’t have an understanding partner then maybe it is time to reevaluate your relationship. many women are so naturally beautiful they don’t even see it. If you want to go for change, all you may need is something as simple as a new haircut, hair color, wardrobe or a bit of makeup for a shocking transformation. no need to call a local plastic surgeon. Celebrities and models are what many women idolize, and this is another reason why women get surgery done not realizing many celebs are highly Photoshopped and far from perfect. I even dare say that many of you are probably even more beautiful than many stars on TV.
  • DATING LOSERS: If you’ve ever dated a player, hold your hands up high I’m raising both of mine. Life is a learning lesson, and we should make these lessons as fun and painless as possible. It’s great to have a good time and enjoy yourself. What’s not great is staying with a player who treats you like a game. Games are for little boys. And every woman deserves a real person who is mature enough to value a woman’s worth. That’s where us women go wrong. The player needs someone to play with. If you drop out of the game, he is going to have to play solo or look for a bimbo who will put up with it. You are not that bimbo. If a man/woman can’t treat you as the gem you truly are, you don’t need that person in your life. most of the time players are just insecure individuals who need to play with other people to boost their low self-esteem. Don’t be a pawn or allow yourself to be used to alter someone’s ego. If you’re looking to have a great time, then by all means, have FUN. but if you’re not, value yourself, know what you want, be aware of what you deserve and keep on moving. Women have so much to offer, the world is filled with many wonderful and beautiful people. Don’t settle for crumbs when you can have the whole pie, which leads us to our next topic.
  • SETTLING: I see it all the time, women married 15-30 years (sometimes even less time) and they stay with a partner for all of the wrong reasons. either because you feel comfortable with them, you are doing it for the kids, it has been so many years you don’t think you can find anyone better, economic situation, etc. There should be a law that nothing or no one should stop you from being happy. I have an older friend who was married 25 years. she was in a toxic relationship. this man gave her mental, physical and verbal abuse. she said she has taken it for so long it became second nature to her, and at her age she was afraid to leave, or find someone else that she feared could be even worse than her husband. I’m no psychologist (God knows I look at people’s clothes instead of their problems), but I wasn’t going to judge her way of thinking, she only could express what she knows. However, I knew I didn’t need a PhD in Psychology to let her know she needed someone better. I persuaded her, assisted her and she finally divorced this man. It has been 5 years since. she converted into Christianity, met a great Christian man, and at 54 years old she has remarried, but now to this wonderful person who I’m sure isn’t perfect, but he treats her with the respect she deserves. she wasted 25 years of her life, she did not need to waste another 25. she didn’t have to settle, and I’m glad she didn’t. You have to take risks if you want to be safe. Moral of the story is don’t be afraid to walkout of an engagement, marriage, or a relationship if it doesn’t feel right to you. Forget the consequences. your happiness is worth everything. If you’re not happy you can’t make anyone else happy, including your family. And that’s unfair to them. your loved ones would rather see you in pure bliss alone then miserable with someone you don’t want to be with.
  • SELLING THEMSELVES SHORT: Live life to your own standards. Don’t live up to anyone’s expectations. many women don’t see what they’ve got to offer and they allow other people’s perception of them bring them down. I know many women who allow other people to demean them, and it’s usually other women who are JEALOUS of them. Only you can make yourself feel that way. Never feel less smarter, prepared or attractive than anyone else. My mother always told me, Remember, you are NOT better than anyone, but DON’T forget, no one is better than you. And I love her for that. Every person has something beautiful to offer don’t let anyone tell you different. many people will try to put you down, so they could elevate themselves. Never question your abilities. You are the most special person ever and you deserve nothing less than the best. We’ve all got something wonderful to contribute, don’t second guess it. when one door closes, in any angle of your life, it is because a better one will open up and trust me, what may seem to be the end of the world, will turn out to be the beginning of a wonderful journey.

LIVE how you want, SAY what you want, DO what you want *as long as you don’t hurt nobody, including yourself*

Eyelid Surgery – Special Considerations For Older Plastic Surgery Patients

In 2007, the eyelid lift was the number one cosmetic procedure of the 55 and older crowd. that age group also accounted for nearly 50% of all the people having the procedure. Now, cosmetic surgical procedures certainly aren’t just for the older crowd anymore.

Men and women in the 30s and 40s are turning back the years as well. However, because their skin still has good elasticity, they can use the non-invasive methods to regenerate their skin. as you get older, your skin loses elasticity and surgical techniques are the only way to truly get rid of the wrinkles and tighten the skin.

While surgical cosmetic work is common in people 55 and older, this means that the surgeon and the patient have to take more precautions. here are some of the special considerations for older patients seeking an eyelid lift:

1. Overall health-This is not to say that everyone seeking plastic surgery that is less than 55 is in perfect health, but the chance of having certain health issues is increased with age. for any patient, but especially older ones, it is important to divulge all medical concerns before having an eyelid lift.

Since this is a major surgery and anesthesia is used, a history of heart attack or stroke makes elective surgery more dangerous. High blood pressure can also cause problems when anesthesia is administered. Operations are stressful on the body, whether you are asleep or not. Diabetes is another medical condition that is contraindicated for elective procedures.

Specific to an eyelid lift, older patients are more susceptible to dry eye syndrome so the surgeon must adjust his technique to make sure the condition is not created or exacerbated.

2. Medicines-Not only do the conditions create problems during the operation, the medications you are taking to control the problem can make the procedure more dangerous. if you are taking any medications, you have to tell the surgeon.

The anesthesiologist needs to know what may interact or reduce the effectiveness of the anesthesia. he will have to watch you more closely during the eyelid lift procedure to make sure you do not become distressed while under.

3. Combination procedures-It is not uncommon for plastic surgery patients to combine an eyelid surgery with others like the brow lift or face lift. for older patients who may have a medical condition, be taking medications or are quite advanced in age, combining procedures may not be a good idea.

The longer anyone is under anesthesia, the more stressful it is for the body. for older patients who have medical conditions, it is even more stressful and dangerous. So, though it is convenient, it may not be a good idea.

Not only should older patients be forthcoming with any medical conditions, they should also carefully choose the right surgeon to perform their eyelid procedure. anyone seeking plastic surgery should verify the credentials of their surgeon.

He should be board certified to perform plastic surgery and licensed to practice in the state you’re in. Surgery is a risky process anyway, but if you add age and medical problems to the mix, it becomes riskier. To get the most from your operation and to make it safer, find a surgeon with experience working with older patients as well as performing eyelid lift procedures.

His knowledge and experience works in your favor if there are special considerations he needs to make. you don’t have necessarily had to mix the idea of looking younger through plastic surgery; you just have to be a little more careful.

Billy Crystal looking mah-vah-lous? No? – In Your Face : The Orange County Register

Actor bill Crystal had the distinction of winning this blog’s ‘worst plastic surgery at the Oscars’  last year in an informal reader poll about celebrities on and off stage, and his appearance took hits elsewhere around the web, too..But was it really plastic surgery? Or just weight gain?

The website Plastic Celebrity said:

“The allegations suggest Mr. Crystal has undergone a minor facelift, an eye lift and facial fillers, however we strongly believe the culprit in his ever changing appearance is directly attributed to weight gain, which has altered the definition and shape of his face. The eyelids look a bit heavy and his cheeks are more pudgy due to a few extra pounds.”

With Crystal, 63, hosting the show this year — and arguably the favorite host over several stints in past years — the scrutiny will be more intense.

If this photo from last may, a few months after the Academy Awards, is pretty much the way he looks (and recent TV commercials promoting his hosting gig suggest that) should he get some cosmetic work? Or stop getting it?

With the show 6 days away, what would plastic surgeons and dermatologists recommend?

“I think overall Billy Crystal looks pretty good from these pictures,” says Dr. Douglas Hendricks, a plastic surgeon in Newport Beach, who nevertheless has some suggestions for him. “he has been able to stave off anyone trying to change the features that make him recognizable as Billy Crystal. I would take special precautions to avoid altering that.”

To Dr. Terry Dubrow, Billy Crystal’s look represents an issue often seen in plastic surgery: “A mismatch,” the Newport Beach plastic surgeon says.

Dr. Christopher Zachary, chairman of the Department of Dermatology at University of Califoria, Irvine, had this view: “The only positive thing that can be said about this awful facelift is that Billy Crystal’s humor will likely transcend it.”

Dr. Vincent Afsahi, a cosmetic dermatologist in Newport Beach and Tustin and a clinical assistant professor at University of Southern California, put it this way: “My advice to Billy Crystal: no more surgery. The goal is to look natural.”

See what else they’re saying here.

Has Callista Gingrich had plastic surgery?

When your husband runs for president, your face is everywhere. And Callista Gingrich certainly stands out on the campaign trail. we wondered, and asked a few plastic surgeons, do you think she’s had work?

Click through these photos to see more on plastic surgery and politics.

Needle or knife? or nothing?

Callista Gingrich, with her perfectly coiffed platinum blond bob, pearls and crisp business suits, is striking.

Because she is often photographed looking rather formal, some are surprised to learn that Newt Gingrich’s 3rd wife is just 45 years old.

If you read this blog, you know the drill! We sent images of her to several plastic surgeons in Newport Beach and asked them to scrutinize the photos for signs of their professions’ handiwork. Do they think that she’s natural, or that she’s had some cosmetic work done?

They weren’t in consensus, though a couple of them recommended a browlift or some tightening.

Dr. Douglas Hendricks sounded quite certain: ”Without question she has had extensive botox to the forehead, crows feet and the frown lines…no matter what expression she has, there are no lines and no movement or change in her expession in the upper 1/3 of her face.”

And, he said, “Her hairstyle , with long hair always covering the ears, suggests she is hiding scars from a facelift which is probably the case, because of the excessively youthful appearance of her face in contrast to her age.”

Dr. Edward Domanskis thinks that Gingrich had a blepharoplasty — an eye procedure to remove bags, wrinkling or excessive skin — and is on a good skin care regimen. but, he said, she could still benefit from “non-surgical radio-frequency skin tightening via Thermage with no downtime. It could also elevate her droopey eyebrows.”

Dr. Val Lambros noted that people age differently. ”Some 80 year olds have very tight smooth skin. Some 40 year olds have winkles and laxity,” the plastic surgeon said. ”She doesn’t look surgical to me.”

What does “surgical” look like? He explains in the slide show.

Dr. Terry Dubrow thought Gingrich has not gotten near a syringe or a scalpel.

“I don’t think she’s had anything,’ he said. ”In fact, for a 45 year old I think she looks a bit tired. She would benefit from a facelift and browlift.

“Compare the way she looks to the way my wife looks who is close to her age and only has had injectables,”  he added, referring to Heather Dubrow, 43, who debuts as the newest housewife on “The Real Housewives of Orange County” in February.

You can see Heather Dubrow in the slide show.

And yes, some prominent Dems, too …
