How to Prepare Well for Your Dental Surgery

Have you successfully booked and scheduled your dental surgery? Quite apprehensive about what to expect? Today’s permanent dentures are not the same false teeth your grandfather kept in a cup by the side of his bed, or the ones that rattled around in your grandmother’s mouth when she chewed her food. Permanent dentures today look so natural, no one will ever know you’re wearing them.

The purpose of permanent dentures is to replace the natural teeth you have lost from either injury or poor dental hygiene, but with greater stability. Conventional dentures, bridges, and partials are removable; in other words, they “float” in your mouth. while they may be less expensive than implant-supported dentures, they often cause gum soreness, discomfort when chewing, occasional speech problems, and they do not prevent bone loss or shrinkage. Traditional dentures may also affect your sense of taste due to the plastic covering your upper palate.

Before dental implants were designed and perfected, there were few good solutions for people who had lost many or all of their teeth. but today there are several different types of permanent dentures (also known as fixed implant bridges) – permanent partial dentures, implant supported dentures, and dentures in a day or same-day dentures.  Permanent dentures are custom fitted and permanently fixed in place (attached to implants beneath your gums). These dentures will allow you to eat and talk just as though they were your own natural teeth. They will also help prevent further bone loss.

Would you be pleasantly surprised to know that you can actually get same-day permanent dentures? After an exam, x-rays and impressions, the dentist will make custom titanium posts for your implants and attach your permanent denture, all in the same day. Often this is all accomplished in a dental laboratory on your dentist’s premises. You may have heard the technique called “All-on-4™” because a complete set of permanent teeth can be placed on just four to six dental implants. the dentist  can place the implants at angles to use the best available bone in your jaw. this procedure is specifically designed for patients with complete tooth loss in one or both arches. Same-day dentures are wonderful for busy people or for people who have to travel long distances for their dental work.

First, your dentist may need to extract teeth to make sure your permanent denture can be positioned correctly and will be a perfect fit for you. Titanium rods are surgically implanted directly into the jawbone beneath your gum tissue. Your dentist will position them based on where he/she expects to place your new denture. You will be given a temporary tooth or teeth so you can eat properly and don’t have to go around with missing teeth. After a few months, when your gums have completely healed and the implant has integrated with the bone, your new permanent denture (or partial or bridge or tooth) can be attached to the titanium posts.

The biggest advantage of permanent dentures is that they are supported by implants and fixed in place. They are not removable and they don’t slide around in your mouth when you eat. You no longer need to worry about eating apples or corn on the cob for fear that your denture will dislodge. Nothing can give you more confidence!

Some advantages:

  • They look and feel like your own teeth. Your dentist will match the color of replacement teeth to your natural teeth so it will be virtually impossible for people to notice a difference.
  • Dental implants blend into the structure of your bone, helping prevent the receding gums and bone loss that are common with traditional dentures and bridgework.
  • They are very secure. They won’t wobble and slide around. You will be able to speak and eat without worry.
  • Because the dentures are anchored by implants, there is no need to use denture adhesives to hold them in place.
  • The success rate of dental implants and permanent dentures is excellent.

There are also some disadvantages:

  • The implant part of the procedure involves cutting into your gums (and sometimes bone grafting) which is surgery, and no surgical procedures are risk-free.
  • The entire process can be time-consuming, depending on how many teeth are involved. the titanium rods have to be implanted and heal completely before the permanent denture can be placed. Unless you are getting same-day permanent dentures, the entire process is done in stages so you will have to make repeated visits to the dentist over a period of months.
  • Swelling is a common side-effect after surgery and can be uncomfortable. also, many patients experience some pain for several days after the procedure.
  • It is unlikely that the implants in the bone would have to be replaced often. however, the teeth on the permanent denture are made of acrylic resin or plastic and may wear out, requiring replacement at some point. also, if you had a small implant-anchored bridge inserted, the porcelain crowns on the anchoring teeth could potentially chip or break and need repair or replacement.
  • Dental implants can be very expensive in comparison to traditional removal dentures, partials and bridges.

The ideal candidate for permanent dentures, and implants in general, is in good health. Implants are most likely to be successful if you have adequate  healthy bone in your jaw to support them. Healthy gum tissues (free of periodontal disease) are a plus.

If you don’t have adequate or healthy bone, your periodontist can correct the problem by grafting bone or bone substitute to increase your chances for successful long-lasting implants that will support your dentures for many years.

Yes, your permanent dentures will cost more than lower cost removable dentures, partials and bridges. this is often the biggest drawback for patients considering this option. but think about the importance of your self-confidence and your appearance before you decide against them.

The costs depend upon whether you will be replacing a few teeth or all of them, as well as the state of your oral health. Remember that the procedure involves surgery and possible other treatments to get your mouth ready for the new teeth or partials or dentures.

Implanted crowns and each of the implanted anchors for a permanent denture can range from $1,200 to $3,500. You must consider the cost of the surgery, the implant post, the crown, and synthetic bone if required. if a great deal of gum and bone restoration is required, you can expect a complete set of implant-supported dentures to cost between $10,000 and $30,000. the price will vary by location so be sure to comparison shop.

NUEVO PROGRESO, Mexico – on fall and winter weekends, droves of Rio Grande Valley residents and American snowbirds still cross the Rio Grande here, drawn by the $1 cold Coronas, $1.50 shoe shines, $4 haircuts, $15 tooth extractions and cut-rate prescription drugs.For the bolder, bargains on plastic surgery and dental implants also are available.While American tourists are quickly becoming extinct elsewhere along the Mexican border because of alarming travel advisories and narco violence, this shopper’s mecca continues to pack them in.This year, more than 1 million pedestrians and almost as many motorists are expected to cross the bridge to shop and dine in this town of 15,000 just a few miles south of Weslaco.”No US or Canadian citizen … (has) been criminally endangered in any way,” claims the town’s upbeat website, which also boasts that Nuevo Progreso “is the safest place to cross on the US-Mexico border.”And indeed, with violence raging to the east in Matamoros, and upriver in Reynosa and Nuevo Laredo, this bazaar of bridge urchins begging for change, politely insistent sidewalk vendors and jam-packed curio shops exists as an island of border tranquility.”Oh my God, I wouldn’t even consider going to Matamoros,” said Joann Anderson, 63, of Huntsville, visiting with her husband, Thomas. “I love coming here. we come for the dentistry, to get glasses and to buy antibiotics and hormones. I feel safe here.”Only one violent incident has occurred, a shootout in December that left two dead. but beneath the almost quaint, throw-back ambiance of tourist-friendly Mexico is another story.For the past two years, a criminal organization has operated here, extorting and kidnapping local businessmen with impunity.Not until the arrival of the Mexican navy in early October were the gangsters, who had shown no fear of the state police or army soldiers prominently stationed at the bridge, chased from town.”It was invisible. the tourists didn’t know anything about the extortions,” said one dentist who asked not to be named. “Some of the bars closed because of the extortions, and I’m sure there were kidnappings.”A medical doctor said the existence of the extortion racket was widely whispered but never talked about openly because of fear.”The town was full of secretive voices. but no one would ever say, ‘I’m paying.’ everyone was scared,” he said, also asking not to be named. “It never touched me. I don’t know who they were.”One local businessman agreed to talk about the racket on the condition he not be identified. He said he paid at least $25,000 to the gangsters over two years and lost most of his businesses.”Two years ago, everything was perfect here. we knew the drug gangs existed, but they didn’t bother us here,” he recalled in a recent interview.That changed around Thanksgiving 2008, when some armed men asked him to take a ride with them in an SUV. when the trip was over, he had new business partners and their terms were clear and harsh.”They told me I had to pay $5,000 upfront for each of my three businesses, and $500 a month after that. they didn’t threaten me. they just said pay up or you know what will happen,” he recalled.and for nearly two years, he was slowly starved out of business.”Young guys, about 18 years old, would come around and say, ‘I’m here for the ‘quota,’ and if I didn’t have it, I knew I would have to close. we never knew who they were, the Zetas, La Familia, the Gulf Cartel or someone else,” he said.In quietly comparing notes with others, he learned who else was being extorted.”All the bars were paying, and some of the pharmacies,” he said.Eventually, the extortion and a depressed economy forced him to close all but one of his businesses. He said he made his last $500 payment about a month ago, just before the dramatic arrival of the navy.Others, whom he knows personally, fared even worse.”A lot of important people were forced to leave. some other people were kidnapped. they charged $1 million or $1.5 million to let them go,” he added.when the navy arrived in force in early October, the extortionists vanished.”They came in with three helicopters and about 200 marines. Not a shot was fired. they knew exactly where to go to get these guys,” he said. “They rounded up all the police, everyone pertaining to the police. they grabbed the people who were charging the quotas. and now they are in charge.”The marines arriveAt one of the dozens of pharmacies on the main drag offering bargains with few strings attached, such as $4.95 for a bottle of 120 Prilosec pills, a store clerk in a white smock explained why the owner was absent.”Like the others, he moved across to the other side. People told me he had been threatened. He’s been gone for more than a year. A lot of people with money left,” he said, declining to give his name.”All the businesses were paying quotas. It ended when the marines came.”When the marines arrived, they went door-to-door, handing out fliers that read: “Enough! Don’t allow more robberies, kidnappings, corruption or violent acts against your family. the navy has no pacts with criminal organizations. we are here to serve our Mexican society.”Included was a phone number and e-mail address to anonymously denounce the criminals.Contacted at their base in Progreso, navy officials declined to comment on their operation.Alfonso Treviño, president of the local chamber of commerce and the owner of a building materials company, was one of the few here who agreed to talk on the record.He attributed a 30 percent drop in tourist visits over the past several years, and the failure of some businesses, to multiple factors. It depends on your bone structure and development.

For instance if you develop quicker and have had your permanent teeth for a while and they are stable, then you can get one.

Usually, this translates into the late teens. I have been going to consults for my implant since I was 16, but am just getting to it now. Apparently boys take longer than girls to develop their jaws, so it would take longer for them.

about the gap: probably what will happen is that a false tooth (called a pontic) will be attached to your retainer when you get your braces off. They will look and sometimes work like real teeth (I can eat with mine on, but not really bite). and you will wear that till you can get implanted. So you should never be toothless, at least :)

Implants cost about $1800.00. The implant is about $1200.00 and the cap that goes on top is about $600.00. if you go to the right doctor (that works on implants only) it will not hurt.

It isn't covered by most insurances but call your insurance co and ask!! The oral surgeon I work for charges $1400 per implant and that is for the post to be set. That doesn't cover the false tooth.
