With more and more people becoming concerned with oral hygiene, dental careers have become extremely popular today.
Before people decide to enroll in a dental program, they will want to determine what specialty they may like to work within.
Dental degrees offer many terrific career options, and the following opportunities are some of the most promising.
The main tasks of dental hygienists are to clean patient’s teeth and take note of any problems with their teeth or gums. if they notice any problems, they need to point them out to the dentist in charge. Additional responsibilities of these professionals are to teach patients about proper oral care and answer any questions they may have. other duties of hygienists vary from state to state and from one employer to another.
However, depending upon the location and employer, hygienists may also be responsible for such things as x-rays, carving temporary fillings, flossing, fitting molds and administering anesthetics. they should also have knowledge in using such equipment as rotary instruments, drills, x-ray machines and ultrasonic devices. some hygienists often perform various administrative duties as well.
People who would like to become a dental hygienist will need at least an associate degree in the field. however, a higher degree may help them broaden their job possibilities. For example, if they choose to work in a public health center or school, they will need at least a bachelor’s degree, while most clinics and offices only require an associate.
There are many terrific programs available for prospective hygienists, but people should make sure the program they choose is accredited. Hygienists must also complete both a written and clinical exam and obtain a license in the state where they wish to practice.
Dental assistants to dentists are much like what nurses are to doctors. Their main duty is to assist dentists in any way necessary. This may involve partaking in such tasks as collecting and recording patient’s dental histories, managing and controlling inventory, updating dental charts, and making appointments.
They will also need to prepare and maintain equipment, assist dentists during dental procedures, disinfect examining rooms and prepare dental materials. Depending upon the location, assistants may also be allowed to perform various “expanded functions”. It is essential to note that even those areas that allow assistants to perform these additional procedures, they must be performed under the supervision of a dentist.
Perhaps the best thing about becoming a dental assistant is that many employers offer on-the-job training, and those who do not typically only require applicants to have a diploma or certificate in the field. however, all applicants should have a high-school diploma with a strong background in such subjects as biology, chemistry, health and computer science.
After people complete their training, whether it is from a college or on-the-job, they will then need to become certified by the Dental Assisting National Board. most all of the states require certification; and for people to obtain this distinction, they will need to pass both a written and practical exam. Additionally, some states require CPR certification and experience in the field before applicants can become certified.
For those people, who want to work in the dental field, but they do not have very good people skills, they may want to consider a career as a dental lab technician. although lab technicians do not work in dental clinics or offices, they are an essential part of the dental team. the main task of dental lab technicians is to construct dental prosthesis such as replacement teeth, partials and full dentures.
Some other things that dental lab technicians often do include creating bridges, crowns, veneers, splints and orthodontic appliances. some of the materials that these professionals work with include plastic, stainless steel, porcelain and precious alloys. People in this profession must pay extra attention to detail, so that their creations will match and blend in with the remaining teeth in a patient’s mouth.
For people to become dental lab technicians, they must have earned a minimum of a certificate or associate degree in the field. they should have a high-school diploma or equivalent as well. if students choose, they can go on to earn a bachelor degree in the field, which can significantly broaden their employment possibilities. all prospective lab technicians will need to pass a certification exam with the National Board for Certification in Dental Laboratory Technology.
After successful completion of their exams, technicians may choose to specialize in such areas as dentures, partials, crowns, bridges, orthodontics or ceramics. some technicians even go on to open their own laboratories after they have gained a few years of experience. the job outlook for this field is excellent, as many people are becoming more concerned with dental health.
General dentists have many responsibilities, but their main goal is to restore their patient’s teeth to a happy and healthy smile. some of the things that general dentists do include cleaning teeth, examining teeth, checking for problems, drilling for and placing fillings, fitting crowns, diagnosing problems, and prescribing medication. they may also perform such things as root canals, tooth extractions and x-rays.
While some general dentists can perform oral surgery, many of them cannot. This procedure is often left to oral surgeons. Finally, general dentists will provide patients with information on dental care, medications and proper nutrition. they will also advise them on treatment plans and refer them to specialists if necessary. Since general dentists hold so many responsibilities, the training they must undergo is quite intense.
People who want to become general dentists must have high-school diplomas or equivalents with a strong background in such areas as biology, chemistry, mathematics and health. they must first earn a bachelor’s degree in dentistry, and then they can apply for dental school. For students to qualify for dental school, they will need to pass the Dental Admissions Test, or DAT. they should have also had excellent scores in all of their studies.
If applicants pass the DAT successfully, they will then need to submit to an interview with the dental school’s admissions board. if the admissions board accepts them into the program, they will spend four years studying the various procedures and techniques of dentistry. upon completion of the dentist program, they will earn their doctorate degree. they must then serve a two year residency with a qualified dentist.
Pediatric dentists are dentists who have chosen to specialize in treating the teeth of children. some pediatric dentists also care for persons with special needs such as people with cerebral palsy or autism. These dentists can treat babies, toddlers, young children, teens and those persons with special needs. Pediatric dentists are unique in that they must be friendly and compassionate to help the children feel at ease.
While pediatric dentists can perform many of the same procedures as many other dentists, there are some things that they cannot do such as placing porcelain veneers or dental implants. These dentists primarily focus on preventing tooth decay so that children will not have problems with their teeth as they grow older. they accomplish this through regular checkups, cleaning, sealants, x-rays and fluoride treatments.
Pediatric dentists must go through all of the same training as general dentists. they, too, must have a high-school diploma and a strong background in biology, chemistry, mathematics and health. they must also earn a bachelor degree in dentistry before applying to dental school. just as with other dental students, they will need to pass the DAT and maintain excellent grades.
They will also need to pass an interview with the admissions board and study for four years in the dentist’s program. however, the difference between a general dentist program and a pediatric program is that prospective pediatric dentists will need to study for two or three additional years after completing their doctoral degree. they can then go on to serve their residency.
The main jobs of orthodontists are to prevent and correct teeth and jaws that are misaligned. Orthodontists can correct many different problems including overbites, under bites and cross bites. they accomplish this by taking x-rays and using molds to determine the extent of a patient’s problem. they will then create a treatment plan that will correct that problem.
Some of the treatment plans they may implement include retainers, braces or various other procedures. In extreme cases, orthodontists may need to wire their patient’s jaw shut to help it realign. if they determine that surgery is the only option, they can refer the patient to an oral surgeon. Becoming an orthodontist also requires intense training and dedication.
Prospective orthodontists need to possess a high-school diploma or an equivalent, and they must have taken such courses as biology, chemistry, mathematics and health. they will need to earn a bachelor’s degree in the field, and they must strive to maintain a high GPA. After completing their bachelor’s degree, they can then apply to the dental school of their choice.
However, before they can enter into dental school, they will need to successfully pass the DAT. the next step is to complete a four-year graduate degree in dental school. with that completed, students will have earned their doctorate in dental medicine. Next, students will need to complete a two to three year specialty program and take a certification test to practice in the field.
Periodontists are dentists that specialize in periodontal disease, or gum disease. the first thing that periodontists do when they have new patients is examine and evaluate the condition of their teeth and gums. if they detect gum disease, they will determine how advanced the disease has progressed. they will typically have their hygienist clean the patient’s teeth, and instruct the patients on the importance of proper oral hygiene and nutrition.
They will also remove plaque buildup by scaling the teeth, which may be all that is necessary to stop gum disease. they may also implement a technique called root planing. Root planing is the process of smoothing rough areas on teeth. however, if the disease is extreme, they may need to perform minor surgery to remove plaque below the gum-line. an alternative to surgery is using laser procedures, which can also remove plaque and tarter.
Just as with any other dental careers, aspiring periodontists need to have a high-school diploma or its equivalent, with excellent grades in biology, chemistry, mathematics and health. they must also earn a bachelor’s degree, preferably majoring in pre-dentistry.
After earning their bachelor’s degree, they must then take their DAT and apply to dental school. Dental school is a four-year intensive program, where students will earn their doctorate degree. Becoming a periodontist also requires three years of additional training in the area of specialization.
Oral surgeons are those dentists who are capable of performing oral surgery if necessary. Their main job is to restore the health of their patient’s teeth and mouths. some reasons that patients may need surgery include wisdom tooth extractions, deformities of the jaw, to improve a patient’s appearance, and to improve the function of the jaw. In most cases, general dentists will refer patients to oral surgeons if necessary.
Upon initial appointments with oral surgeons, the doctors will examine the patient’s mouth and teeth to determine what form of treatment is necessary. they will also review any information given to them from the patient’s regular dentist. In some cases, surgery may not even be required.
If surgery is required, the oral surgeon will discuss the various options with the patient. they will also discuss whether they will need to use local anesthetics or general anesthesia. Finally, they will tell the patient about everything they should expect from the surgery including during surgery, after surgery, complications and side effects. Becoming an oral surgeon requires many years of education.
In addition to requiring a high-school diploma or GED, aspiring oral surgeons must have a strong background in chemistry, biology, health and mathematics. they must also earn a bachelor’s degree in the field, pass the DAT exam and complete a four-year dental program in an accredited dental school. Oral surgeons will need to complete three to four additional years of training in their specialization as well. Finally, all prospective oral surgeons must complete a four to six year residency.
Cosmetic dentists are those dentists who help patients correct something about their teeth that they do not like. This can be most anything from discolored teeth to fillings. Whatever the reason, cosmetic dentists can most often correct the problem. no longer do people have to live with teeth they are not happy with. Cosmetic dentists focus more on the appearance of patient’s teeth, rather than oral hygiene.
While these dentists do focus on the cosmetic aspect of dentistry, they also strive to maintain as much of the patient’s natural tooth structure as possible. Today’s advanced technology has made this possible. although cosmetic dentists often utilize modern technology to achieve the results that their patient’s want, in some cases, a simple tooth whitening is all that is necessary to give them a bright and healthy smile.
Students who want to pursue careers in cosmetic dentistry must be high-school graduates or possess an equivalent. It is also best if they have a strong history in health, science and mathematics. they will need to choose an accredited college or university and earn a bachelor’s degree in pre-dentistry. After earning their bachelor’s degree, they can then take their DAT and begin applying to dental schools.
In dental school they will learn everything they need to know for the field of dentistry. Dental school is a minimum of four years; however, prospective cosmetic dentists will need to study for an additional two or three years in their area of specialty. Finally, after all these many years of studying, students who want to become cosmetic dentists will then need to complete a residency with a licensed cosmetic dentist.
The main job of prosthodontists is to restore the health and aesthetics of patient’s teeth and mouths. This can include both dental health needs and cosmetic needs as well. While many general dentists, oral surgeons and cosmetic dentists can perform many of the same procedures as prosthodontists, these professionals are experts in their field.
Some of the procedures that prosthodontists may perform include fitting patients with crowns, dentures and bridges. some other procedures they can perform include restoring tooth and dental reconstructions, treating cleft palates, reconstructing facial problems and treating bruxism. they may also treat prognathism, rebuild jaws, rebuild teeth, install dental implants and install retainers or braces.
Just as with many other dental careers, it takes many years of intensive training to become prosthodontists. Their education should begin in high-school, where they should focus on such courses as chemistry, biology, mathematics and health. they will need to attend an accredited university or college and earn a bachelor’s degree in pre-dentistry.
After earning a bachelor’s degree, they will need to complete the DAT exam and apply to a dental school. Dental school consists of four years of intense study and two to three years of study in their area of specialization. After completing dental school, they will have earned their doctorate degree. It is at this point, that they will need to complete a residency under an experienced prosthodontist.
