BEVERLY HILLS (CBSLA.com) — A domestic violence survivor underwent free facial reconstructive surgery, thanks to the generosity of a local non-profit group.
23-year-old Anna Advena suffered permanent damage to her face and nose after being severely beaten by her high school boyfriend.
“I was held hostage for about four hours,” she said. “what literally saved my life was that someone heard me calling for help.”
Advena said she’s reminded of the pain and suffering every day.
“You wake up in the morning and you don’t see the person you used to look like. you see the person you became because of someone else,” she said.
Dr. David Alessi, a Beverly Hills plastic surgeon and biochemist, believes it’s a miracle Advena survived her nasal injuries.
“Anna had a fracture of her nose from her abuser. She was struck from the front, (which) crushed her nose inward. her nasal bones are displayed outward and her nasal tip is displayed outward, so cartilage is fractured,” he said.
Alessi continued, “The entire support of her nose was fractured inward, too. so if you look at her nose, it hangs down and drapes down over her lip.”
He said years after the abuse, Advena still has the disfigured scars and has difficulty breathing normally.
So with the help of Dr. Alessi and Face Forward, a non-profit that provides surgical reconstructive services for victims of domestic violence, Advena recently underwent nasal surgery.
“These women have to look in the mirror every day and be reminded of what happened to them, so it’s very hard to move forward,” said Face Forward CEO Deborah Alessi.
Advena said she hopes the surgery will help her heal emotionally and physically.
“I want to be able to feel free of my past and this will give me freedom,” she said.
Dr. Alessi said although her nose won’t be perfect, it will still be a noticeable difference to Advena.
“We can actually get (her nose) more refined…get bones back to where they were before, straighten bones on the outside, and make the inside of her nose open so she can breathe,” he said.
Advena hopes telling her story publicly for the first time will give other victims of violence courage and inspiration.
“I wanna be proof that it is possible to change your life again and possible to renew yourself physically and emotionally,” she said.

Which of the world’s leaders have gone under the knife to enhance their image? Vanity Fair recently consulted with a top plastic surgeon who shared his opinion about whether some politicians have gotten plastic surgery to maintain a younger appearance.
Dr. David Hidalgo, a Manhattan cosmetic surgeon, weighed in on which of the world’s top leaders have gotten surgery. on Russian President Vladimir Putin, Dr. Hidalgo comments “that the lack of obvious incisions makes surgery unlikely. “I have not seen any good plastic surgery come out of Russia. a lot of girls come over here with horrendous things we have to straighten out,” he says, adding that Putin “doesn’t strike me as the type of guy who’s gonna let somebody put him to sleep.” but Dr. Hidalgo does find Botox injections to be a possibility.
He doesn’t think that North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong un has had much plastic surgery, either. Dr. Hidalgo commented “‘It’s an interesting theory, but I think it’s all genes — genes and weight. I mean, you could inject fat in the face, but you can also get that from just gaining weight — so that would be my theory.”
Some Politicians Undergo Significant Plastic Surgery
Other politicians appear to have had more work done. Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, says Dr. Hidalgo, has definitely gotten hair transplants and an eyelift. ” I think I can see a lower eyelid incision that’s relatively recent, and also his lower eyelid’s pulling away from his eyes a little bit,” he explains.
What do you think of cosmetic surgery in the world of politics?
In a recent "Today Show" piece, movers and shakers in Hollywood said that they're looking for more natural looking actresses.
Just this morning, The Today Show featured a story about a movement in Hollywood towards natural beauty. Producers and casting directors are making it clear that they don't want fake looking actresses, but rather prefer a less 'cookie cutter' aesthetic. some are even branching out to hiring actresses from outside of Los Angeles, and even outside of the US as they search for a distinctive face.
The casting directors interviewed for the segment were quick to point out though that it's okay if you have cosmetic surgery, they just shouldn't be able to tell. “My patients have said for years that they specifically don't want to look plastic,” says Denver plastic surgeon Dr. David Broadway. “I had a patient this morning who is looking for facial rejuvenation and she told me she doesn't want the wind blown look and doesn't want to appear years younger, she just wants to look good for the age she's at now.”
It's easy to think that a 'fixed' look is what's hot when stars like Heidi Montag step out with DDD breasts on a tiny frame. Dr. Broadway points to size as one of the five key components in making a breast implant surgery appear natural. “First, gel implants generally look and feel more natural than saline. Second, I almost always prefer to place the implant beneath the muscle, and [third] the implant should be smooth rather than textured. Fourth, a low profile implant as opposed to a moderate or high profile one helps acheive a more natural contour. Finally – size. Don't go so big. Sometimes patients bend to pressure from friends or their significant other to go larger than they might be comfortable with, but if the implants are too large on a small frame, they won't look natural.”
Another way to ensure a natural result is to seek out less drastic procedures. Many women have been trending towards choosing less invasive, and also less expensive procedures for some time, especially since the economy took a turn for the worse. the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) conducted a study with Dermik Laboratories, a business of sanofi-aventis US, LLC and found that women are largely turning to injectables rather than surgical treatments. the survey showed that 92% of women considering facial plastic surgery preferred an injectable that treats wrinkles, lines and folds and provides gradual results which will last as much as two years over the 8% who wanted immediate results that last for only 1 year. Sculptra is a long lasting filler that has been shown to last as much as 2 years. the changes from SculptraAesthetic take some time to see, but it is a more subtle, gradual improvement rather than other treatments.
In another study conducted by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS) confirms that women prefer a gradual effect over a sudden change. 89% said they would rather have gradual results that could last as long as two years over immediate results lasting six months. Additionally, 75% of women said they'd choose a gradual improvement that lasts 2 years while 25% would take immediate results if they lasted one year rather than six months.
“It's important to listen to your patient,” says Dr. Broadway. “My patients let me know what results they want and I advise them what course of treatment will best provide them with the final result they desire. It's about finding a balance.”

The FDA didn’t go far enough, said Mercyhurst University Public Health Department Chair Dr. David Dausey. Dausey addresses the FDA’s recent BPA ban in his latest vlog, The Dausey File: Public Health News Today.
BPA has been associated with a wide range of health problems from metabolic disease to reproductive health defects. Dausey said the ban is merely symbolic and doesn’t truly regulate the controversial chemical.
“Manufactures and the chemical industry were getting such bad press from their use of BPA in baby bottles that they voluntarily decided to stop using it years ago,” Dausey said. “Now that no one is using BPA in baby bottles, the FDA finally gets around to banning it.”
It’s not only BPA that deserves further scrutiny, he said. He urged stronger state and federal regulations to protect consumers from a host of other potentially toxic chemicals that have found their way into a vast array of consumer products.
“The last federal toxic chemical law in the United States was passed in 1976,” Dausey said. “Since then, more than 80,000 chemicals have been brought to market.”
Examples of other potentially harmful chemicals found in consumer products include Perfluorinated Chemicals (PFCs), which can be found as stain retardants in clothing, and have been associated with impaired immune responses in babies; and Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDEs), found in flame resistant products, which have been linked to learning disorders and hyperactivity in young children.
“We can and should do more to protect our children and families from harmful chemicals,” Dausey said. “The FDA’s recent ban on BPA is just a symbolic gesture that needs to be followed up with real regulations and real laws that force manufactures and the chemical industry to be accountable for their products and prove that they are safe before they are brought to market.”
An 11-year-old Royal Palm Beach girl who was attacked by a dog two weeks ago is facing a major complication in her recovery.
Jacklyn Tucker underwent emergency plastic surgery to repair tissue in her top lip and nose June 19 after her friend’s dog attacked her during a sleepover. Doctors at St. Mary’s Medical Center feared that her body would not incorporate the tissue, so they added hyperbaric oxygen therapy to her treatment to encourage blood flow to the tissue and promote healing.
Now, two weeks later, the tissue has not been incorporated, and Jacklyn faces a long road ahead in her healing process.
“Without a vessel-to-vessel attachment, I knew that it wouldn’t take completely,” said Dr. David Rankin, the head of plastic surgery at St. Mary’s. “But we wanted to minimize the morbidity of future procedures.”
Rankin said when Jacklyn was brought in that night, her entire upper lip and part of her nose was severed. The piece of tissue the dog had bitten was brought in with her and evaluated for vessel-to-vessel reattachment. that was not possible, so Rankin said doctors had to reattach the piece of tissue in layers, starting with the muscle, up to the skin, lip and nose.
Once doctors determined that the surgery and hyperbaric therapy were not successful in incorporating the tissue fully, they halted hyperbaric therapy Sunday. Rankin said Jacklyn will be transferred to Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital today to see a surgeon who specializes in complex reconstruction.
Jacklyn’s dad, Jack Tucker, has been by his daughter’s bedside since the beginning. he said this morning that Jacklyn’s top lip and part of her nose have turned black, a clear sign that her body did not accept the tissue. however, he said, “she’s holding up.”
The incident happened as Tucker was at a friend’s house for a sleepover. she told her dad that the Jack Russell terrier and English bulldog mix named Tanker attacked her after she fell off the family’s couch. The dog bit her side and face. a Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control report said the dog’s owner told an officer he picked Jacklyn’s lips “off the floor to give them to EMS.”
The owner surrendered the dog to Animal Care and Control. The dog’s owners had not been given a citation.
Jack Tucker, a tow-truck driver, has not been able to work since Jacklyn’s been in the hospital.
A fundraiser is planned for July 26 to help with Jacklyn’s mounting medical costs. Park Avenue BBQ Grille in Wellington will donate 25 percent of its proceeds that day to Jacklyn, and The law offices of William Abramson will host a raffle. The top prize is an iPad 3, donated by Abramson’s office. Second prize is a 32-inch flat screen TV, donated by Badcock Furniture, and the third prize is a $100 gift card to Park Avenue BBQ Grille.
Tickets are $5 and can be purchased by calling Abramson’s office at (561) 650-1898.
Those who wish to make monetary donations can do so by visiting any Chase Bank, where a trust fund has been created for Jacklyn — Account Number 3033381868.

According to statistics released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) last April, Chinplants are the fastest growing cosmetic surgery procedure. in fact, chin augmentation grew more than breast augmentation, Botox, and liposuction combined last year.
Here are some quick facts about chin augmentations last year (data from ASPS):
Number of Procedures overall: 20,680
55 and over: 8,459
A receding chin can make a person look older, which is to account for the popularity of chin implants amongst the older crowd. but that’s not to say younger people with weak chins haven’t benefited from this procedure.
In the search for beauty and the fountain of youth, all roads lead to Los Angeles. Home to the best doctors in the business, the city remains a hotbed for aesthetic innovation and a haven for those who want to look young forever. Fortunately, all that work seems to be paying off: new research published in the Archives of Facial Plastic Surgery shows that face-lifts and other facial cosmetic surgeries can make people appear up to seven years younger than their actual age. No wonder 13.8 million cosmetic plastic surgery procedures were performed in the United States last year alone. this beauty business is now worth more than $10 billion. and in Beverly Hills, you only have to walk two blocks to find dozens of MDs offering everything from liposuction to nose jobs. here, five of the top City of Angels docs for every little nip and tuck.
The Artist: Dr. David Amron, body
Expertise: A cosmetic surgeon and co-owner of Spalding Drive Cosmetic Surgery in Beverly Hills, Dr. David Amron specializes in shaping areas of disproportion with a procedure he calls “mini-liposuction,” which has helped mold some of the best bodies in Hollywood.
Beauty philosophy: Amron remains a purist, foregoing most fat-burning fads (lasers, ultrasound technologies, etc.) for the artistic control he believes yields better results. “People are always looking for some snazzy new invention, but there is something to be said for perfecting your skill and doing an excellent job with traditional methods,” he says. “After all, it is the artist [who] creates the masterpiece, not the paintbrush.”
Technique: Amron favors local anesthesia (aka tumescent liposuction), allowing patients to remain conscious during the operation. “Adjusting the body throughout surgery enables me to accurately sculpt fat for a smooth and natural-looking outcome,” he says. during the procedure and if the patient desires, Amron purifies the fat extracted using a sophisticated filtering mechanism, so it can then be reinjected as a natural filler for the face. using light and shadows to guide him, he slowly molds hollow areas in the temples and cheeks, looking at structure and contour to soften and highlight the face for a more youthful appearance. Known as fat transfer, the technique usually results in a permanent filler, unlike synthetic options that may last only a year.
Education: Amron is a board-certified dermatological surgeon. He received his bachelor’s degree from UC San Diego and his medical degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine in new York. He continued his residency at UC San Diego’s Jacobs Medical Center and had a postgraduate research fellowship at UCLA’s Division of Dermatology. He has been practicing in Los Angeles for more than 10 years.
Myth buster: “There’s a misperception that liposuction is for the overweight, but really it’s about fixing areas of disproportion that can’t be resolved with diet and exercise,” says Amron. “My job isn’t to remove fat, but to sculpt the body for ideal balance.”
The Visionary: Dr. Michael J. Groth, eyes
Expertise: In a city where lying about your age is practically a pastime, the man whose hands Angelenos trust to help them turn back the clock is Dr. Michael J. Groth. one of a small number of ophthalmic plastic surgeons in Los Angeles (there are fewer than 600 in the country), Groth’s eye-opening skills have earned him a legion of loyal fans who are now being asked why they look so rested and stress-free.
Beauty philosophy: when it comes to eye lifts and brow lifts, the difference between looking refreshed and looking startled can often be miniscule. because of this, Groth takes a delicate and conservative approach. “It’s kind of like working on a watch. There are a lot of little moving parts, and they all need to be respected. and it has to be beautiful and functional. Function is critical.”
Technique: to ensure a natural look, Groth’s technique requires working from the inside of the eye, making a tiny incision in the backside of the lower eyelid to reposition fat tissue, eliminating bags, deep wrinkles, and dark circles. The approach gives eyes a lift without causing trauma to the muscle or removing too much fat tissue—both of which can make you look more Jocelyn Wildenstein than Jen Aniston. this focus on preserving and repositioning fat to prevent hollowness and an unnatural change in eye shape has made Groth the most sought-after surgeon for those wanting their procedure to go undetected. The best part: The results last up to 20 years.
Education: Groth graduated first in his class from the University of Miami’s Miller School of Medicine. He is a board-certified ophthalmologist, as well as a member of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery. He has been in practice in Beverly Hills for more than 20 years.
Higher learning: to stay ahead of the curve, Groth teaches at UCLA’s Jules Stein Eye Institute and West Los Angeles VA Medical Center, in addition to running his own practice. “Teaching keeps me connected to the medical community, and I’m constantly energized and challenged by the students,” he says. “It’s the best way to master your craft.”
The Curve Creator: Dr. Gabriel Chiu, breasts
Expertise: The perfect hourglass figure, whether on Marilyn Monroe, Cindy Crawford, or Kim Kardashian, is one beauty ideal that never fades—even scientists admit it has evolutionary advantages. Fortunately, if you’re not happy with the curves God gave you, Dr. Gabriel Chiu can create them for you. The man behind some of LA’s best assets, Chiu is the owner of Beverly Hills Plastic Surgery and highly sought after for his personalized service and gift for delivering natural-looking breasts.
Beauty philosophy: “As Auguste Rodin said, ‘I invent nothing, I rediscover,’” says Chiu. “My goal is to maximize a patient’s inherent beauty, not to imitate a celebrity or turn her into someone else.”
Technique: Beloved for granting extensive doctor-patient face time, Chiu gleans a deep understanding of each client’s body type and personality pre-procedure. “For a perfect result, the breasts should blend with the body and a patient’s lifestyle and sense of self,” says Chiu. while some implants are inserted through the areola or the crease where the breasts meet the chest, others can be implanted under the armpit or even through the navel. by tailoring to each body type, lifestyle, and breast size, Chiu minimizes scarring and ensures that even though the breasts themselves may be faux, the results look anything but.
Education: Chiu received his degree in microbiology and immunology from Berkeley and his medical degree at the Western University of Health Sciences in Southern California. He served as chief resident in general surgery at Cuyahoga Falls General Hospital in Cleveland before beginning a fellowship in plastic and reconstructive surgery at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. He is board certified by the American Board of Physician Specialties. following his training, Chiu relocated back to California and opened Beverly Hills Plastic Surgery.
Special touch: his progressive approach to pre- and postoperative care incorporates homeopathic and holistic remedies to expedite the recovery process. and Chiu’s wife, Christine, sends each patient home with a recovery bag complete with chicken noodle soup, vitamins, fresh juices, magazines, music, and movies. this attention to detail has made Chiu as admired for his bedside manner as he is for his sculptural skill.
