Miracle escape for toddler who tripped on pencil

A toddler has made a miracle escape after falling on a pencil which pierced her eye socket and entered her brain.

Two-year-old Wren Bowell, from Bath in England, had to undergo four-hour surgery as surgeons removed the pencil, which missed a major blood vessel by just one mm.

Had the pencil pierced a blood vessel, doctors believe it would have almost certainly resulted in severe brain damage or death.

“The pencil missed her eye completely,” Wren’s father, Martyn Bowell, told The Guardian.

“We only found out afterwards that the pencil missed two major blood vessels and if it had gone a millimetre either way it could have been a lot worse if it had hit a third.”

Wren had been in her bedroom drawing a picture when she ran through to show her parents what she had done. However, she tripped over a stairgate and on to the pencil, which went through her eye socket.

“The stairgate was there to keep her safe, but as she tripped over it while carrying the pencil she fell on to it. If anything happens to your child you are shocked,” Mr Bowell continued.

“A broken bone would be bad enough, but something happening to the eye, head or brain is one of the worst things that could possibly go wrong.”

Luckily for Wren, her mother, Michelle, is a nursery nurse and realised she should not attempt to take the pencil out, and instead contacted emergency services.

Mr Bowell added: “The pencil was stuck so hard that they had to pull part of her face off and take out part of her skull to take out the pencil. they then put Wren’s skull back together with plastic plates and screws, which will biodegrade.”

Wren is making a full recovery after spending three weeks in hospital.

The consultant neurosurgeon who operated on her, Ian Pople, said: “The pencil was within a millimetre of hitting a big blood vessel in the brain. It just skirted the top of the eye and that it didn’t damage the eyeball itself was very fortunate.”

Fat Transfer Reconstruction

Never underestimate the creativity of plastic surgeons. when 32 year old Tim Barter locked himself out of his house, he climbed the drainpipe in an attempt to get in. After falling 25 feet, neighbors found him unconscious, and took him to the hospital, where he remained in a coma for several days. He suffered a shattered eye socket and a brain hemorrhage. The damage was severe, and due to the swelling and bleeding, part of his skull had to be removed to relieve the pressure.

When mr. Barter recovered, surgeons used computer technology to design a custom titanium plate to replace the piece of skull that was removed.  But, there was still a dent where the plate had been inserted. To fill it, surgeons harvested fat from the man’s stomach and transferred it his temple.

It took two years for him to recover, but thanks to the fat transfer and his surgeons, mr. Barter is now in fine shape, and has moved on with his life. fat transfer is a wonderful way to use our body’s resources.  it is a cosmetic tool for freshening our appearance, while removing fat from areas that we do not want it – but, it is also a method that is used in reconstruction, and can help those who have been in accidents. As fat grafting technology moves forward, we will be reading many more stories like this, and helping people, who might have had to live with disfiguring scars, lead normal lives.

A teenager was left for dead after being chased and savagely beaten by a gang of Asians in a suspected racist attack.

Daniel Stringer, 17, was pursued through a busy town centre by up to eight men and then repeatedly kicked and punched in the head.

He was left in the road, bleeding and barely conscious, as the gang melted away into the night.

‘Why me?’: Daniel Stringer-Prince, 17, pictured with his mother Cheryl, has now managed to open his left eye following the attack in Hyde, Manchester

Police say there is no evidence of provocation and are treating the attack as a serious hate crime.

Daniel’s family issued pictures of the teenager lying seriously ill in hospital with a fractured skull and fractured eye socket. They say the nerves behind his eyes have been damaged and he could be left with impaired vision.

‘I wish someone would tell me why they left my baby for dead in the road,’ said his mother Cheryl Stringer. ‘I’m lucky to still have him.

‘we don’t know the extent of the damage behind his eye until his swelling goes down.

‘He then needs plastic surgery on theeye socket that they broke in two places. He also has several fracturesto his cheek that need  plastic surgery and he also has a fractured skull.

‘It’s going to be a long, long battle for my gorgeous boy. I still can’t understand why they left him in the road to die.’

Daniel, still in great pain, told how he was cornered by the gang after they chased him through  the town.

‘They were older than me,’ he said. ‘One of them grabbed me. He hit me in the face and that’s about all I can remember.

‘I’m upset and feel really down. why me? I don’t know why they chose me.’

The incident occurred at about 10.15pm last Saturday when he and his best friend Kavan Brown, also 17, were walking in Hyde, Greater Manchester, when they passed a takeaway.

Inside was a group of Asian men and a woman. Without provocation one of the men produced a knife and made a threatening gesture at the teenagersthrough the window, suggesting they were going to have their throats cut.

He had emergency surgery after the attack and will need to return to hospital when doctors attempt to rebuild his right cheek with a metal plate.

Kavan, whose nose was brokenin the attack, said: ‘I just can’t understand why it happened. I’d never seen any of them in my life before.’
