KFVS12 News & Weather Cape Girardeau, Carbondale, Poplar BluffMartin’s crash could have been far worse

BROOKLYN, Mich. (AP) – Brad Keselowski was in the middle of a news conference after his second-place finish Sunday in the NASCAR Sprint Cup race when he became distracted by a replay on TV.

It was Mark Martin's car slamming violently into the end of a short, narrow barrier on pit road during the first half of the race.

“Whoa. Damn,” Keselowski said, stopping in the middle of an answer to a reporter's question. “That's the first time I'd seen that. Jeez. my God.”

Martin walked away from his crash at Michigan International Speedway, but the side of his car was essentially impaled by the end of the wall, raising questions about whether that spot – a gap in the barrier on pit road that leaves the edge of the wall exposed – creates a safety risk.

“Could have been a lot worse than it was,” Keselowski said. “Over the course of time, we get complacent and think that we've hit all the buttons on the safety side. then you see something like that. it shows why you have to never quit working at making these cars and tracks safer because that could have been a lot worse, whether it was for Mark or for the crew members or anybody.”

MIS later released a statement.

“The safety of the drivers is paramount,” a spokeswoman said. “So we will seek NASCAR's opinion and work with them on any recommendations they may have on how we can improve any part of the competition area – that includes pit road, pit wall, the track, anything competition-related.”

Martin was the pole sitter and led most of the first 65 laps of the race – which ended abruptly for him.

“I was hoping that I was going to miss the pit wall completely and not tear the car up, but then I saw that the angle I was going that I was going to hit the end of pit wall,” Martin said.

TWO STRAIGHT: For the second straight weekend, Tony Stewart and Jeff Gordon both experienced frustrating race days.

Last week at Watkins Glen, Stewart had a pair of pit stop miscues and hit an inner guardrail, and Gordon spun his car on the last lap. Sunday, Stewart and Gordon had valve spring issues, forcing them to the garage during the first half of the race.

Stewart, who finished in 32nd place, returned just prior to the midway point of the race but he was forced out after completing only 109 laps. Gordon also came back with just over 50 laps left and placed 28th. that was Gordon's worst finish at Michigan since August 2008 when he was 42nd. it was the first race Stewart did not finish at the track since June 2006, when he placed 41st.

“I was just running along there and all of a sudden I dropped a cylinder,” Gordon said. “This is a tough place on engines. We rarely have these issues. It's unfortunate to have this one here today, but that's the kind of year we've been having.

“I was hoping after Pocono that we could carry some momentum and not have these kind of back-to-back weekends.”

EARNHARDT REBOUNDS: after wrecking his car during practice Saturday, Dale Earnhardt Jr. knew he was going to need a flawless performance to compete for his second consecutive win at Michigan.

“I felt like I was under a lot of pressure just to not make any more mistakes,” said Earnhardt, who finished fourth. “I went out twice in the last two weeks on my own, and that's just something I try not to have happen and try not to get that reputation.”

Earnhardt, who won at MIS in June, led the points race even after finishing 32nd at Pocono two weeks ago – he was forced to the garage at one point because of a busted transmission. then last weekend at Watkins Glen, he was in the top 10 before a late spin sent him on his way to a 28th-place showing.

Because of the wreck this weekend, Earnhardt was forced to switch to his backup car and start from the rear of the field.

“I felt real bad (Saturday) night about wrecking the car and all the work the guys had to do,” he said. “They had to stay in the garage extra (Saturday) to get this car ready. … they did an awesome job. I've got to give my crew and all those guys all the credit for today. We had a pretty good car, maybe not enough to win.”

KENSETH'S EFFORT DEFLATED: a flat tire with 51 laps remaining cost Matt Kenseth a shot at winning his second race of the season.

Kenseth, who had been running consistently in the top five through most of the race, was forced to the pits for a tire change, dropping him to 23rd place. he finished in 17th after starting on the second row.

“I came home 17th because we just had everything go wrong,” Kenseth said. “It was really an uphill battle. … For us the biggest challenge was we were really good in the beginning. As soon as the sun came out we were kind of junk. The farther we got back the more problems we had, and the tougher it was for us.”

News anchor Liz Harrison faces breast cancer with faith

Printed on a small pillow on the couch in Liz Harrison’s living room is the phrase “The Lord Comforts me.” A few feet away is a small plaque that reads “Nothing is Impossible to a willing Heart.”

These aren’t just decorative items but a reflection of the KFSN (Channel 30.1) anchor’s strong faith that is helping her deal with breast cancer. She was scheduled to have surgery Monday.

“I am not afraid. My days were numbered from the get-go. God knew from then how many days I would have. So I don’t care what the statistics are. he has the only answer,” Harrison said a few days before the surgery. “It makes you pause and take stock of your life. you get a reality check that you are not going to live forever.

“But I am able to deal with this because of my faith. with everything I’ve been through, I think my faith has increased because God has been faithful all the way through.”

That is the big reason why Harrison, 52, was able to approach the days before the surgery with a positive outlook and a deep sense of calm. She also found strength in the love she has been getting from her husband, Keith, the relaxation she has found in being an amateur painter and the support of friends, including a weekly prayer group that meets in her home.

“I feel great. That’s the thing about breast cancer. you don’t feel any different. A lot of people ask why I am still working and I’m like ‘Why not?’ I am going to start feeling crummy after the surgery on Monday,” Harrison said.

“I’m appreciative for every day. I have my bad days. I get very down sometimes and get mad. with this, I think it’s much harder on the people around you than it is on you because they don’t have control over the situation.

“My favorite Scripture is 1 Corinthians 10:13. it says whatever trials you encounter, God will give you what you need to get through. he will always get you through.”

Harrison has known since she was 20 that while there is no immediate history of breast cancer in her family, the fibrous tissue in her breasts gave her a higher potential to face cancer. During a self-examination in June, she found what she describes as “a blob” in her left breast.

After she met with her doctor, Harrison was scheduled for a mammogram and an ultrasound in July.

“It’s a good thing they did the ultrasound because the mammogram didn’t pick it up,” Harrison said. “But you know when there’s something there that shouldn’t be there. I knew when I went in for my mammogram that I probably had cancer.”

Doctors discovered a type of cancer known as invasive lobular carcinoma. it begins in the milk-producing glands of the breast and becomes invasive when it has broken out of the lobule and has the potential to spread to other areas of the body. because she discovered the mass so early, it was at stage one, which generally means it’s localized to one part of the body.

Current statistics show one in eight women will have breast cancer and 10% of them will face the kind Harrison is fighting.

The cancer was discovered in one breast but Harrison decided to have double mastectomy surgery to dramatically reduce the chances of the cancer recurring.

She already had decided to have reconstructive surgery and her plastic surgeon was scheduled to be in the operating room to place spacers behind the muscles that will slowly create a place for implant surgery after six months.

Harrison will find out Thursday, after the pathology work has been completed, whether she will have to undergo chemotherapy.

The cancer has been just the latest challenge for Harrison, who laughingly said she should write a book. Harrison has kept a journal and had plenty to write about, from the death of her father from a brain tumor in March to the eight years she was off the air — 1995-2003 — to spend more time with her sons — Ben and Jason — who battled drug addictions.

Harrison also has had two hip replacement surgeries and a mild form of Guillain-Barre syndrome, a disorder that occurs when the body’s immune system attacks part of the nervous system, that kept her in bed for a month.

Then there was Ben’s much publicized arrest and trial that ended with him being sentenced to six years in prison after pleading guilty to armed robbery and grand theft.

Harrison said she believes her sons are back on the right path as Ben has two more years on his sentence and Jason is studying to be a hairstylist. Her daughter, Lindsay, is in college in Dallas.

The fact Harrison has been at KFSN since 1983 has put her in the public eye through all of her trials and tribulations. She has dealt with the attention by being as honest and open as she could be. in this case, she has been willing to talk about the cancer in hopes it will be a reminder to others the importance of self-examination.

Best-case scenario has Harrison back in the anchor chair at the beginning of October. Until Harrison returns, Amanda Perez will be the primary fill-in on the ABC station’s 11 p.m. weeknight news. Perez shouldn’t get too comfortable because Harrison has complete faith she will be back on the air soon.

The Twin Face-Lift Challenge: Does a Face-Lift With Only Local Anesthetic Work?

ABC News’ Cecilia Vega reports:

Identical twin sisters Miki Keller and Donna Keller are inseparable.

The 49-year-olds from Los Angeles live near each other, vacation together and even feel each other’s pain.

“when she broke her back in Spain, I felt it,” Donna told “Good Morning America.”

Now the twins are taking their closeness to another level, getting face-lifts together.

“I’ve noticed in the last couple of years everything was sagging, like the neck,” Miki said.  “I would see pictures of myself and go like, ‘Oh my god.’”

“I care about how I look.  I want to be attractive,” said Donna.  “I want to feel younger.  I want to match my attitude, so to speak.”

The twin sisters decided to not just go under the knife together but to undertake a kind of twin experiment.  Donna chose to have a traditional surgical face-lift under full anesthesia, a five-hour procedure, while Miki elected to try an experimental face-lift using only local anesthetic, meaning she would be wide awake during the hour-long operation.

Dr. Payman Simoni, a board-certified plastic surgeon in Beverly Hills, Calif., has been performing anesthesia-free face-lifts for the past six years and said that patients can heal faster with the new technique.  He also said the face-lift results  appear more natural because the work is done while a patient is sitting up as opposed to lying down.

“Within an hour after they get their face-lift, they get up and walk on their own,” he said of his technique.

While Miki received a face-lift, eye lift, skin resurfacing and Botox at the hands of  Simoni, her sister, Donna, turned to another board-certified plastic surgeon in Beverly Hills, Dr. Ashkan Ghavami, for the traditional face-lift surgery.

Ghavami, founder of an eponymous plastic surgery clinic in Beverly Hills, performed a face-lift, eye lift, skin resurfacing and Botox on Donna, and also injected fat cells.

Eight weeks later, both sisters could see results and both had opinions of their respective procedures.

Donna, who underwent the five-hour procedure, said her recovery was initially “brutal” but is happy with the results.

Miki, on the other hand, said the anesthesia-free route  is “the only way to do it.”

“I would do it again.  I wish I would have done it sooner,” she said.  “we get compliments from our friends.  They say we haven’t changed the way we look, we just look better.”

Will Plastic Surgery Turn You Into an Addict?

“I don’t feel prettier, I don’t feel younger. I just feel scarred.”

These are the words from Laura Perella, the author of Chasing Beauty, her cautionary tale of the toll chasing beauty through plastic surgery took on her life.

Laura chose to have fifteen surgeries from age 25 to age 35, and spent $60,000 hoping to improve her already God-given good looks. She now warns others who might be swayed into believing that surgery and injections will stave off Mother Nature’s tromp across their faces that they might meet up with the same bad plastic surgeons she hired. Today at 39 years of age, she shares her plight: “I don’t feel prettier, I don’t feel younger. I just feel scarred.”

Laura is probably the exception because most patients do not undergo quite so many procedures. She encourages young women to seek other modalities because chasing beauty through plastic surgery takes a toll on your body, your good looks and certainly your bank account.

You know, Laura is not alone because many plastic surgery users have spoken out regarding their disappointment with their surgical results. One plastic surgeon remarked that ‘Plastic surgeon’ has been called a psychiatrist with a scalpel. more aptly plastic surgeons are not the magicians their clients wish they were. There are wonderfully trained surgeons but unrealistic expectations and surprises can derail even the best procedure.

What women want is a younger looking face. One that is toned and tightened. they want natural beauty, not man-made, cookie-cutter features.

If you choose surgery and injections these methods may produce disappointing results; surgery is dangerous business and yes, cosmetic procedures are indeed surgery. Tummy tucks, liposuction, facelifts, eye lifts, jowls lifts, neck lifts all require sedation and cutting.

Using injections to plump nasal labial folds, lips and more can also produce disappointing results; allowing injections of toxins and chemicals to paralyze your facial muscles also have drawbacks like creating droopy eye brows and bunny wrinkles alongside your nose. What? more wrinkles?

Yes, when you paralyze one portion of your face, your surrounding muscles must compensate for the paralysis. The paralysis primarily immobilizes a particular muscle but studies show that there is migration of the serum especially when it is injected into the face – namely it migrates to your brain.

The warnings include the usual superfluous ones like swelling, redness at the injection site and maybe a droopy eyelid that will probably correct itself in a few weeks – certainly in less than three months. The very telling danger lies in the words of caution such as:

* Paralysis of a nearby muscle that could interfere with opening the eye(s)

* Disorientation, double vision or past pointing (dizziness or imbalance)

* Temporary asymmetrical appearance

* Abnormal or lack of facial expression

* Local numbness

* Headache, nausea or flu-like symptoms

* Swallowing, speech or respiratory disorders

* Facial pain

* Product ineffectiveness

* Muscle atrophy

* Nerve irritability

* Production of antibodies with unknown effect to general health

* Death

* serious disability

Some of the most unusual authorization aspects are the statements that a patient must agree to if they choose Botox:

* I am aware and accept that no guarantees about the results of the procedure have been made or implied.

* I understand and accept that the long-term effects of repeated use of Botox Cosmetic are as yet unknown.

The effects of Botox are temporary yet the effects can cause long-lasting side effects.just so you know other injections that plump up the grooves in your face and deflated lips have no long term testing either so if you are disappointed that your results do not meet your expectations you might want to consider non-invasive methods.

Choosing surgery and injections cost a lot of money and long-term use may put your heath at risk. is this good common sense? Yes, injections are less radical than surgery but over time there can be complications. Remember, there has been no long-term testing on any injection used for cosmetic purposes.

So what can stop the downward slide of your face?

Specialized facial exercises act as a preventative measure and also help reverse the look of aging in your face. just as exercise works for your body, facial exercise techniques that isolate, anchor and contract the muscles using gloved thumbs and fingers will lift, tone and tighten sagging facial muscles in hardly any time at all.

A sagging face is a result of soft, lax, droopy muscles. The facial skin is attached directly to the tiny, hidden muscles so when these muscles elongate from lack of use, they drag your skin downward, creating wrinkles that add to the look of old.

Most facial exercise users love their results and will tell you that their new faces developed slowly but surely when they dedicated themselves to exercising regularly. Facial exercise doesn’t take much time but the results can be startling. Imagine, your face looking 10 -15 years younger without one stitch or injection. using thumbs and fingers and armed with the knowledge that you can create a younger looking face that everybody notices, you’ll never have to worry about an addiction to surgery or injections.

[WATCH]: Kim Kardashian Before and After (Plastic Surgery, Fake Butt Booty, Implants)

Kim Kardashian’s before and after plastic surgery pictures. as a man, this chick disgusts me… She started out as fame desperate girl, so her first husband bought her tons of surgery. her infamous Ray J sex tape made her scandalous and semi-famous. then she used a dumb athlete, Reggie Bush, to help smooth out her scandalous image. most of the media fell for it and featured her in magazines. as her image cleaned up she upped the surgery and continued to exploit self-hating black men for their fame to put her on a pedestal. once she really begin to build her brand she dropped the ‘urban guys’ and has settled down with a classic all-american white guy, NBA player Kris Humphries (if you’re majority white, you’re white). Hopefully she’ll now deflate her paid for bottom and go back to her natural god-given backside…. only time will tell. (UPDATE: she used yet ANOTHER athlete for their money and credibility to up her image, and not even 3 months later she’s divorced. Maybe if she tries dating a 100% nonblack guy she’ll have better luck. as of now it looks like she’s still trying to be a black girl and continues to inflate her butt, and she lies about it while chasing black men, I pray one day she is secure enough to “wear” her natural body again and date her own kind). UPDATE (11/12/11): Yessss, FINALLY her ex-husband reveals the truth. She uses spanx and buttpads. Thanks for the confirmation Kris, but honestly anyone with at least a pea for a brain already knew. Jaeson Ko Professor Geoppo English 1A 5/25/10               Plastic Surgery the word “plastic” in plastic surgery comes from the Greek word plastikos, meaning “to mold or shape”(ECTACO). Plastic surgeries were first developed to rebuild and reshape wound tissue lost by injuries and diseases. however, nowadays, many people are using plastic surgery for cosmetic purpose to enhance their beauty than to reshape and rebuild the wound. After plastic surgery have originated in the United States of America about thirty years ago, people and the society’s demand for plastic surgery, for cosmetic purpose, is skyrocketing. In contemporary world, plastic surgery is causing controversy due to the fact that many people are risking infection and death for the medically unnecessary procedure, particularly when the patient is pre-teenager or teenager. Religious organization, Christianity and Catholic opposes plastic surgery on the basis that it permanently alters the body that God have created and gave as a “trust” to humankind. hence the religious organization consider plastic surgery as immoral. according to the Buddhist monk at the United States retreat center run by Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh have stressed that plastic surgery must be abided by a monastc rule that specifically describes cosmetic surgery as an offense (Hanh). Realistically, people pay thousands of dollars for plastic surgery and take the risks that are invovled without the medical necessity, just to enhance theirselves. also, Many people are frown by plastic surgery and consider it as cheating. however, in the creation of humankind, we are blessed, and sometimes cursed with the physical features that we have not chosen for ourselves. considering humankind as a freethinkers, if plastic surgery could improve and give a chance for individuals to alter the physical imperfection in an effort to enhance their normal and healthy life, plastic surgery is benefitial to individuals in the contemporary society….

Georgia Woman Pleads Guilty To Giving Fake Butt Implant Injections!

Now it is in the face that the cement takes palce!!!! :S

A transgendered woman from Florida is claiming that fake doctor Oneal Ron Morris injected cement and tire sealant into her face. She is the third victim to come forward against the phony plastic surgeon.

Rajee Narinesingh said she was referred to Morris through the transgender circuit, as Morris is a transgender woman herself, and decided to see her for a procedure. Narinesingh said she did not have enough money to visit a licensed doctor and desperately wanted some alterations to her appearance, so she took a chance on the 30-year-old phony doctor.

“It becomes so dire that you want to match your outside with your inside that you’re willing to roll the dice and take your chances,” Narinesingh, 48, told CBS Miami. “As a transgender person, you’re thinking, ‘oh, my God, I can start to look like I want to look like and I don’t have to spend a lot of money.’”

After the procedure, Narinesingh noticed lumpy cheeks, a deformed chin and a bloated upper lip. Immediately, she knew something was wrong.

“I have learned my lesson — I could have died — I know that now,” Narinesingh said.

Her doctor, Coral Gables plastic surgeon Dr. John Martin, said he hopes surgery and therapeutic injections could help undo the damage done.

“She’s got a long road, thousands and thousands of dollars to correct what was probably two or three hundred dollars to get the injection,” Martin told CBS.

Morris was arrested in early November on charges of practicing medicine without a license. and since then, multiple other victims have come forward.

The first victim to go to authorities was an unidentified woman who received a series of injections by Morris, consisting of a mixture of cement, flat-tire sealant and mineral oil to boost her buttocks. The procedure occurred in may 2010 and the woman paid $700 to Morris for it.

The woman was extremely embarrassed by her condition and, due to pain, has had to undergo several surgeries along with 24-hour care.

A second woman then came forward claiming Morris injected her leg and buttocks with the toxic substance, according to NBC Miami. She has also been subsequently ill.

State health officials said Tuesday that several more possible victims have since come forward alleging bizarre and dangerous experiences with Morris.

Morris injects herself with the concoction and has suffered life-threatening injuries as well revealed Jennifer Hirst, a spokesperson for the Florida Department of Health.

“I’ve never heard of anyone using something like this, but I guess you can go to any hardware store and inject something into someone,” Long Beach, California-based Dr. Marcel Daniels told RadarOnline. “It’s a horrible idea.”

“This is a totally unlicensed, untrained individual,” he revealed. “She could inject it into the wrong blood vessel and cause an embolism, which can kill.”

“There is a high risk of tissues death or multiple abscesses forming,” explained the surgeon, who went on to add, “Such toxins can cause an inflammatory response that creates incredibly painful nodules that can burst through the skin, cause open wounds and lead to even more scaring and disfigurement.”

Authorities have claimed that Morris may be a member of an underground plastic surgery ring in South Florida.If she is convicted of practicing medicine or attempting to practice medicine without a license under Florida law, she could face up to five years in prison and be fined up to $5,000 per count.
