I have had eating disorders of one kind of another for over 30 years. During that time I have lost and gained many, many stones in weight. I would lose ten stone and gain it all back. For the last six years I have been having counselling from a psychologist. it has been extremely expensive and my husband has paid for it as I do not work (and I do not receive benefits – despite giving up work to be a carer for my late mother and now my father).last year I was offered bariatric surgery and took up the offer. I am now ten stones lighter and much fitter.it has not been the easy option. I have worked extremely hard alongside the surgery. I am now able to exercise and no longer need the walking sticks I used prior to surgery.what I do know is that I would not have been able to do this without the extensive counselling I have undergone.my heart goes out to the family of this poor woman. she will not have opted for surgery without putting a lot of thought into it. Unfortunately it is not for everyone and there can be dreadful side effects and complications. Obviously this lady was one of the unlucky ones. - Miasgirl, London, 21/03/2011 13:59 Report abuse
why people are so openly hateful of fat people? And why do they have a god given right to openly abuse the overweight?Being overweight is often the result of a psycological issues, just like annorexia. but where annorexic’s get sypmathy, support and every available treatment without question, fat people are treated like leppers, cursed at, called every hurtful name imaginable and labelled a drain on society and public resources. It’s shameful. All people should be treated equally regardless of shape, size or colour! - Archer, London, 18/03/2011 10:54 Report abuse
my friend’s daughter had a band fitted four months ago. she is losing weight nicely but she had months and months of counselling about the outcome. I cannot really believe this lady was not told of the risks of an actual operation. if she could not read literature, surely she had a family who would help. Also, why do so many really overweight people get into wheelchairs where they will get even heavier. it is a mystery – to one who has always had to stop herself eating and getting too heavy. Do we hear the word compensation yet? yes, I know I am a cynic. - Amber in Mitchaml., mitcham surrey, 12/03/2011 14:41 Report abuse
Some of the comments on here have make me feel ashamed to be human.Candice – Parasites??? Look around you. the human race is a parasite- what makes you different? - missi, Essex, 12/03/2011 14:12 Report abuse
A friend of mine had a gastric bypass done ( which btw is not at all the same as having a band fitted! sloppy reporting). He had to go to meetings with a psychiatrist, had the procedure explained more than once, including the many risks, and signed tons of papers before the surgery. Now he’s lost lots of weight and is waiting to have surgery to remove some excess skin. It’s NOT THE EASY OPTION. - Juma, at work, here, 12/03/2011 13:41 Report abuse
sorry, have I just drifted into 1930′s nazi germany. Some of these comments are worthy of goebels. yes – bad she is too fat, it is bad she couldn’t cope. yes it is bad the NHS has to cope with the imperfections of human life.YES IT IS BAD THAT THE ANONYMITY OF POSTING ON THIS SITE MEANS YOU CAN BE CRUEL – a sad indictment. - MAG, E14, 11/03/2011 23:42 Report abuse
“Just eat less” Duh, why didn’t the obese who don’t want to be obese think of that!?”Just eat less” is only a very tiny part of the problems associated with obesity. You should try to understand more about the vast array of causes to the problem, the effects, both physiological and psychological of the problem, the solutions, and the vast array of problems inherent to the solutions before you start sneering at people that are overweight. Most armchair pundits have no idea what they are talking about.Am I overweight? Yep. In MY case it is even my fault, before anyone sets out to score points. …and for the record, every penny that has been spent on trying to resolve the issue and its effects has been out of my own pocket.Working in the medical field I do have the background and resources to adequately research AND understand the causes and effects of this problem. I KNOW that once the problem is brought under control it has to be ACTIVELY kept under control because what caused it initially is likely to remain. The woman in this article had the surgery – always a risky act whenEVER someone has to cut into you and rearrange evolution’s handiwork – didn’t want to be obese either. she had run out of options, she wasn’t someone obsessing over an additional 1 or 2 lbs. - Rogan, Irving, 11/03/2011 18:56 Report abuse
Spotter and other moralits. I recently met a man whose son had to have bariatric surgery because a tumour in his pituitary gland made him eat non-stop. by the time the tumour had been removed he was grossly obese. And Spotter, I have a BMI of 19: how about you? - Dectora, London, 11/03/2011 16:29 Report abuse
such a tragedy, no one really needs a lot of food to get through the day, I wish that she had taken a 3 mile walk 5 times a week with a reduce calories and she would still be a alive. - l wright, New York, 11/03/2011 13:54 Report abuse
like most ES atricles, this one is light on facts and circumstances, so I’m not going to judge the unfortunate woman that diedUnlike Fulhamite…what an unpleasant person you are! - Facts Please, London, 11/03/2011 12:27 Report abuse
Overweight, blind, in a wheel chair and thought having a child was a good idea? No doubt this operation and her family paid for by the taxpayer when all that was needed was a better upbrining, an education and a good diet. - Fulhamite, Fulham, 11/03/2011 10:38 Report abuse
this story sends another warning about the dangers of letting yourself get too fat. Gastric band ops and other weight losing schemes such as plastic surgery are inherently dangerous. we should all just eat less and stay away from hospitals. - Spotter, london, 11/03/2011 10:17 Report abuse
