Husband/wife team joins Newton Medical Center staff: Part 2

Editor's Note: Susan Lovelle of Lovelle Plastic Surgery and Kevin Allen of Medical Park Eye Center are now employed by Newton Medical Center, as of April 1. The two clinics will be wholly-owned and operated by NMC. The couple originally is from new York but decided to leave the big city for the small-town feel of Newton.

Eyesight often is something we take for granted — until we have a problem that affects our vision. Dr. Kevin Allen believes it’s vital to catch those problems before they become serious, and as an ophthalmologist, he said he takes pride in helping people maintain healthy eyesight. “Ophthalmology has a great deal of gratification,” he said. “you often have immediate results of improving people’s eyesight. they have a great appreciation for that.” Allen is a board-certified ophthalmologist at Medical Park Eye Center on the Newton Medical Center campus, and according to NMC, he is the first eye surgeon based in Newton in more than a decade. He said he wanted to start performing eye surgery in Newton so that people, especially older patients, wouldn’t have to drive all the way to Wichita for a treatment. “It’s much more convenient to have that service here,” he said.

Background Allen, whose parents were Jamaican immigrants, grew up in new York City, and like his wife, he received his education at Columbia University. After spending some time in North Carolina, he moved to Kansas with his wife, Susan Lovelle, who practices at Lovelle Plastic Surgery on the Newton Medical Center campus. “It’s a nice community,” he said of Newton. at his clinic, he offers a variety of services, including: eye exams, cataract surgery, glaucoma care, diabetic eye disease treatments, and more. He treats all ages of patients, from infants to adults. He said some eye problems can develop slowly over time, and people may not even realize what’s happening. After a treatment, they’re excited by how much better they can see.

‘Family atmosphere’ Both Allen and his wife said they have enjoyed practicing in Newton, and Allen said he likes Newton Medical Center’s community approach to health care. “The people at the local hospital are taking care of their friends and neighbors,” he said. “… There’s that family atmosphere at Newton Surgery Center. That increases the level of care.” Family also is an important priority for Allen. Despite the hectic schedule that comes with being a doctor, he said he and his wife have always carved out time to spend with their children. “we always made their games,” he said. All Children’s Specialists Soon To Be In One Place

If your child is sick and in need of a specialist, finding one in Omaha is about to get easier. next month Children’s Hospital and Medical Center will open a new facility that puts all of their specialty clinics under one roof.

The Children’s Specialty Pediatric Center at 84th and West Dodge Road in Omaha will house more than 30 specialty clinics on five floors while using kid-friendly waiting rooms and exam rooms to put young patients at ease.

Currently these specialty clinics are located at the Scott Pavilion on the Children’s Hospital and Medical Center campus as well as three other locations around Omaha.

Three new clinics, plastic surgery, UNMC’s Pediatric Dental Clinic, and ear, nose and throat will also move into the center.

On the main level of the center “Kids Camp” offers a supervised play area for brothers and sisters of clinic patients.

Monday morning, instead of cutting a ribbon for the opening of the new facility, staff, patients and their families helped release monarch butterflies.

Angela Klock’s young daughter Anna, who was diagnosed last August with a rare brain tumor, attended the dedication ceremony. Angela looks forward to the new outpatient center.

“So many families have so many different needs,” said Klock. “It’s not just focused on the cancer. But there’s so many things that are involved with the cancer like eating issues and vision and other things. so there’s always other specialties involved. so it’s great that they have all those things in one place now.”

Vanessa Walls is the Vice President of Ambulatory Services at Children’s. “It’s almost twice the size of our previous clinics,” said Walls. “It brings all of our physicians together in one location. And it allows our patients to have a better experience while they’re here at the doctor’s office.”
