Plastic Surgery Board Certification Explained

Did you know that any licensed medical doctor can claim to be a cosmetic or plastic surgeon regardless of their training? Yes, it is true and it is legal Plastic Surgeons are highly trained for their specialty just as neurosurgeons are trained for their specialty. State medical licensure is not granted according to specialty but merely the primary medical license upon completion of general medical school. if a physician wishes to continue their medical training to become a specialist, they continue on for surgical residencies usually followed by a fellowship (like an internship).

To become a real plastic surgeon, they must complete a General Surgery Residency (3 Years of formal training), then complete a Plastic Surgery Residency (2 Years of formal training), then complete a Fellowship (6 months to one year). Upon completion of these requirements, the surgeon may sit for their boards. the American Board of Plastic Surgery is the only recognized board certification by the American Board of Medical Specialties which oversees all board certifications for the various specialties. in order for a surgeon to become board certified, they must complete a written exam followed by oral exams. There are other board certifications that pertain to cosmetic/plastic surgery, but they are not recognized board certifications due to their lack of formal training requirements. There is one SUB-specialty board certification for FACIAL plastic surgery that can be obtained by physicians whom are already board certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology (Ear, Nose, & Throat). they offer a Sub-specialty board certification if the physician completes a ONE year Fellowship in FACIAL plastic surgery. This board certification does not require a formal plastic surgery residency as a requirement to sit for their board exam, nor does it pertain to ANY surgery of the body.

Having worked in my husband’s Plastic Surgery practice for over 10 years, I have witnessed some astonishing marketing efforts by physicians whom are not qualified due to lack of proper training, yet advertise they are board certified when in fact they truly are not. one of these board certifications that is not recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties is the American Board of COSMETIC Surgery. See the difference? This is a group of OB-GYNS, Urologists, family practice physicians, general surgeons, and so on who do not have formal plastic surgery training. their requirements for this board certification are very lenient, but look on the bright side: they do require the physician be drug tested.

I have personally witnessed the devastation created by these phony plastic surgeons. Patients are sold a Fairy Tale, unrealistic expectations, and lured by cheap prices, but ended up with botched results requiring reconstructive surgery to correct their new deformities.

Don’t let this be you if you needed a neurosurgeon, you would check referrals, training background, history, and credentials, right? do the same when seeking cosmetic or reconstructive plastic surgery.

There are three GOLDEN Resources to help you find a REAL plastic surgeon:

The American Board of Plastic Surgery

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons

The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons

The latter two are the creme-de-la-creme of Plastic Surgery professional organizations. they adhere to a strict codes of ethics, continuing medical education requirements, and also require them to be board certified by the first resource: the American Board of Plastic Surgery. All three of these resources can help you find the right Plastic Surgeon for you.

Ruby’s Rap: Anthony Youn – A&U Magazine

I feel like first-time explorer Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday—carefree and in love, as I scoot around Florence on my thrilling fire engine red Vespa. I’m in love with both this enchanting city and the place I’m hangin’ my backpack, the Grand Hotel Villa Medici. Celebrating fifty years, they’ve harnessed all that magic into a fresh new experience. once you walk through the glass entrance of this former eighteenth-century palace, the marble, the art, and all the fashionable appointments enchant your senses. the ambience is affable nobility with quiet elegance. why, darling, it would make any princess feel right at home!

Yesterday I attended a UNAIDS symposium and stumbled upon a captivating medical doctor with a delightfully wicked sense of humor. We were an instant match! I knew who he was, as last summer I took him to bed with me for several nights. Well, er, that’s not quite accurate. You see, I was reading Dr. Anthony Youn’s memoir, In Stitches. It’s the story of a “nerd who wore Coke-bottle glasses [and] braces” who grew up to be an accomplished plastic surgeon. Tony’s honesty is refreshing, and the engaging tome will take you on an amusing—and eye-opening—journey into the medical field. You might know Tony as his puss has graced American television, appearing on such shows as the Rachael Ray show and the Doctors.

I discover that Tony is staying at the same hotel. We agree to meet the next morning for breakfast. on the return from my morning jog to Piazza Michelangelo, I cross the Arno River on the Ponte Vecchio. Scenario potente! once back in my stylish suite, I apply my makeup on the balcony. It’s best doing it in daylight, ya know; the chances are better you won’t end up looking like some amateur drag queen. I take periodical “sighs” as I gaze at the view: Brunelleschi’s iconic eight-sided dome of the gothic Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore. Ahh, Firenze…

Ruby Comer: Buongiorno! [I say, greeting the staff at the entrance to the Conservatory, the dining room. Tony waves yonder. He’s seated on the atrium patio at one of the stately linen-covered tables near the kidney-shaped swimming pool. We embrace.] what a lovely area, huh? It’s like we’re having breakfast in someone’s private backyard.Anthony Youn: Absolutely, Ruby.

[Without hesitation, we both head to the buffet table. Tony gets French toast; I indulge in eggs Benedict. Seated once again, the waiter pours my green tea and then Tony’s decaf java.] let me start right off and ask, how has the epidemic impacted you? Like most physicians, the AIDS epidemic has touched all parts of my medical life and training. as an undergrad I spent several months in a pharmaceutical laboratory researching HIV antiviral medications, and even wrote my senior thesis on it. During my medical school years I spent considerable time with an infectious disease physician at an HIV clinic. as a plastic surgeon I don’t encounter HIV/AIDS on a daily basis in my patients, but, I occasionally treat people who’ve developed HIV-related facial wasting.

Ah, yes. I’ve had friends with this condition who’ve been helped by doctors like you. how does that work, Tony? What’s the procedure like? The best treatment is fat grafting, where I remove fat from the tummy or love handles and inject it into the face. Fat grafting can be permanent, and therefore is a great treatment for this. for HIV/AIDS patients who aren’t interested in surgery, I often inject Sculptra to plump the face. Sculptra is an FDA-approved injectable treatment that gradually fills out areas that are gaunt or sunken. while less invasive than fat grafting, it can be more expensive in the long run since it only lasts about two years and then must be repeated.

Uh, huh…[I take a nibble of my gluten-free cookie I specially ordered.] and what’s your favorite kind of surgery to perform?Facial fat grafting. This is a very powerful tool that plastic surgeons are now using to reverse the aging process. while its most obvious indications are to add volume to a gaunt or thinned face, we are now discovering that our fat is full of stem cells. these stem cells have the potential for reversing aging in a way we’ve never imagined. It’s an exciting treatment whose potential we’ve only begun to appreciate.

Grandioso! [Paolo, the more-than-obliging concierge, kindly interrupts briefly and tells me that he’s confirmed my tickets to the Accademia for today.] I can’t wait to sensually bathe myself in Michelangelo’s David again. what genius! [Tony nods wholeheartedly.] Say, do you have any other association with the HIV/AIDS community? In a major way, I have focused on research on HIV medications. [He pours more thick maple syrup on his entrée.] I’ve also donated to the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation and other AIDS-related charities.

Well, good night shirt, that’s one of my favorite charities! [He grins exposing a sexy smile.]Fortunately, all of my patients who have HIV are living long, happy lives, thanks to the success of antiviral medications. I believe the considerable success physicians and patients have had with the newer antivirals is one of the most important advances in medicine today.

That’s good to hear. You’re certainly a role model for many, Tony. Do you have a role model?I’ve always respected Greg Louganis [A&U, February 2008] for his courage in revealing both his sexual orientation and his HIV status.what a champion—in many ways! Doctorrrr….have you always played safely? now be honest with Ms. Ruby….yes, I always used condoms, Ms. Ruby! [He smirks then shouts...] Wrap it! [The family next to us looks up. Tony and I look at each other and chuckle.]

And did you and your wife, Amy, who you met in medical school, ever get tested? Like many couples, we were tested before marriage. We’re both negative.

Smart. Thinking ahead, how will you address STDs with your two kids when they’re grown?[He hesitates.] That’s a hard question considering they are less than six years-old, Ruby! Well, we’ll have the dreaded talk sometime before I believe they are sexually active. Hopefully, by then, it will only be a discussion about why they should get vaccinated for HIV.

I like your positive mindset. Signore, who’s your favorite action hero?I’ve always looked up to Spider-Man. as a skinny nerd with no game and no clue, I’ve always empathized with the story of skinny-geek-makes-good by beating up bad guys and getting the girl. It’s also the story of my favorite movie growing up, the Karate Kid. I think there’s always been a part of me growing up who felt like an outsider. I was never the popular quarterback of the football team who got all the girls. instead, I was always the good friend who left parties and walked home alone listening to the Carpenters on my Walkman.

Jumpin’ Jehovah! I knew we were kindred spirits. I loved—and still do—the Carpenters. what an angelic voice Karen had….Her version of “Superstar” is awesome! too bad she’s gone. [With admiration, he lightly touches the fresh violet orchid that adorns our table.] I hope a lot of people can relate to my story, and will laugh and cry along with me in In Stitches, as I learned how to overcome being an outsider and to become comfortable in my own skin.

Help Yourself and Your Physician, Ask The Right Questions.

You should always be prepared to talk with your physician in advanceof visting your medical doctor. Physician’s appointments are nearly always made in advance. having some time before you have to see your doctor gives you enough time to prepare for your appointment. Use that time to think about your well being since the last time you saw your health prac***ioner and what your concerns about your health care are. Write them down so you will not forget to inquire. a medical doctor’s office or hospital can be an unnerving and unpleasant location that can leave you slightly confused no matter how often you been there in the past. a good way to keep in mind what to ask is have it printed out in advance check up. For those of you that go to doctors who have email, you might send your doctor your questions in advance of your appointment.

Do not be frightened to ask the medical doctor, the nurse or anyone at their clinic questions including the receptionist. Very good MDs want to help you and are inspired by helping patients. its easier to remember to ask at the very leaset a few of the right questions. You should ask questions of your doctor focus on the health issue, treatment, and outcome.

By heath issue or problem, I mean what is the problem I have and what are the different names of the problem so you can investigate it after your visit. Frequently there are a number of terms for health problems. Depending on the age of your doctor and where they were trained they may refer to the same thing with various names such as medical lingo or lay lingo. You can easily look up your doctors background and that may help you commincate with them better. You should also ask questions about what are the causes the problem so you have a better understand of what you can do to fix the health condition.

The final question is what is the remedy to the issue. Depending on whether you value conventional medicine or complementary medicine, you should make sure you ask your health prac***ioner about what the treatments for your medical concern are and what their ideas are on the solutions. there may be nosolutions  and you should prepare yourself for that situation and ask your physician about what exploration is being done to solve medical condition and will it ever be cured or what you should expect your end result to be. Knowing what to expect as an outcome is really critical. You need to understand what should be occurring with the treatment and if what is occurring to you after your are be treated varies from the expected solution. if your expected solution is not being achieved, you must discuss with your physician what is happening and ask additional questions.

Any Medical Doctor can practice Plastic Surgery with out certification of the Board.?

Yeap. that doesn't necessarily mean they're not good at plastic surgery though. The main person from the show "Dr. 90210" did not do a plastics residency and is not board certified, yet he is apparently an excellent plastic surgeon.

Any Medical Doctor can practice Plastic Surgery with out certification of the Board.?

Minneapolis Plastic Surgeon – Dr. Richard Tholen

Elective Cosmetic Surgery… once you have reached the point that you are now ready to choose who will operate on your face or body, it is indeed a “big deal!” Some people choose their electrician, plumber, hairdresser, and even auto mechanic with more care and research than they choose their surgeon. You ask the opinion of friends you trust, of acquaintances who have similar needs (or experience with a certain provider), a caring family physician, or on the basis of an advertisement that draws you to a certain website. Most individuals considering elective cosmetic surgery select a surgeon based on training, experience, area of stated expertise, referral from friend or advisor, and of course: Board Certification.

Board certification is obviously important: virtually every doctor who advertises himself or herself as a “cosmetic surgeon” lists “Board-certified” as part of their credentials and list of attributes. So it must be important, right? But just what is Board Certification?

Every doctor who graduates from medical school has earned their medical degree: MD stands for Medical Doctor, DO for Doctor of Osteopathy, both of whom diagnose illness, treat patients with prescription medicines, and perform operations, but not without much more training after medical school. (By the way, other health care professionals use the term doctor, such as DC—Doctor of Chiropractic, or OD—Doctor of Optometry, and there are now practitioners in Holistic Care, Naturopathic medicine, or Traditional Chinese Medicine who sometimes use the term Doctor. None of these providers has the training or credentials to perform surgery, whether in a hospital or a private clinic.)

After graduation from medical school, most MDs and DOs complete a residency training program in their choice of medical specialty such as Internal Medicine, Family Practice, Surgery, Psychiatry, Pediatrics, or Radiology. Additional subspecialty training (often called a Fellowship) may be necessary to become Board-certified in Neurosurgery, Thoracic Surgery, or Plastic Surgery). There are 24 physician specialties that are part of the American Board of Medical Specialties, including all of those listed above. A total of 10 surgical specialties or subspecialties, and 14 medical specialties or subspecialties, make up these 24 areas of training and expertise within the ABMS. Each of these member Boards set their individual standards for quality practice in a given specialty, and each sets membership criteria (proper and complete residency training, licensure, and rigorous oral and written examinations). since specialties differ so widely, these criteria that make up these tests are quite different. what makes someone a good family practitioner does not necessarily make him or her a competent neurosurgeon. Similarly, just being Board-certified in one specialty does not guarantee training, competence, or expertise in cosmetic surgery.

It may surprise you that every doctor’s state license is the same: they all allow the doctor to practice Medicine and Surgery. The individual doctor’s practice in a chosen specialty is based on residency and fellowship training, meeting the criteria for Board certification in that specific specialty, and then (if they practice in a hospital or clinic) credentials committees and peer review that permit practice in the specialty. The latter includes detailed lists of permitted procedures; for instance, a MD who is fully trained and Board Certified in Internal Medicine is not allowed to perform surgical procedures, and would be severely disciplined and perhaps dismissed from the hospital staff if he or she did so. from a state license point of view, however, it is legal for any physician to perform any procedure or prescribe any medication (though it may well be unethical or improper to do so outside one’s training or expertise).

It may also surprise you that Cosmetic Surgery is NOT one of the 24 ABMS Boards. Doctors of various specialties perform cosmetic surgery. For instance, an ABMS-Board-certified Ophthalmologist may appropriately perform cosmetic eyelid surgery, particularly if they have taken additional fellowship training in Oculoplastic Surgery. an ABMS-Board-certified Surgeon may appropriately perform mole or skin cancer removal, but may not have the specific training to perform more complex reconstructive surgery. an ABMS-Board-certified Otolaryngologist might appropriately perform cosmetic eyelid or facial surgery, but does not have the training to perform breast implants or abdominal surgery. Dermatology training after medical school may include a first year of transitional (flexible) program, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, OB/GYN, Surgery, Emergency Medicine or Family Medicine, followed by 3 years of Dermatology residency. true surgical experience is correspondingly variable. Many Dermatology programs now include “Dermatologic Surgery” in their training descriptions and certificates, but the actual amount of cosmetic surgical training that Dermatologists have is extremely variable. that being said, some ABMS-Board-certified Dermatologists have taken some training in cosmetic surgical procedures and perform select procedures well. Most surgeons are proud of their training and are eager to present their residency and fellowship credentials and certificates that show exactly which ABMS Board they are members of, and where and how long they studied cosmetic surgery. There is a non-ABMS American Board of Cosmetic Surgery that certifies doctors of various specialties; training requirements are less than those attained by ABMS-Board-certified Plastic Surgeons.

Ultimately, the prospective patient needs to know that Board-certification is important, but also needs to know whether or not the certification is ABMS-recognized or otherwise, and most importantly, in which specialty the Board certification is earned. Board-certification is a great starting point—take the time to learn just how your cosmetic surgeon gained his or her training and experience. we are happy to share what required so much time and dedication to learn!
