Editor's Note: Susan Lovelle of Lovelle Plastic Surgery and Kevin Allen of Medical Park Eye Center are now employed by Newton Medical Center, as of April 1. the two clinics will be wholly-owned and operated by NMC. the couple originally is from new York but decided to leave the big city for the small-town feel of Newton.
from the time she was six years old, Susan Lovelle knew she wanted to be a doctor. She said she idolized her pediatrician, and even as a child, she knew she wanted to go into medicine. “I thought he was the coolest guy in the world,” she said of her childhood physician. Fast-forward several years, and Lovelle now has fulfilled that dream. She is a board-certified plastic surgeon with her own clinic in Newton, and she works in the same building as her husband, Kevin Allen, who also pursued a career in medicine. Lovelle was born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y., and attended medical school at the prestigious Columbia University. Although she considered several different types of surgery, including general surgery and neurosurgery, plastic surgery turned out to be the right fit for her. “this is it,” she said. She went through an intensive training process, including five years of studying general surgery, and she also spent time working at a trauma center. “looking back, I wouldn’t have changed it,” she said. “definitely made me a better surgeon. … It was really excellent training.” She quickly gained attention for her work: in 1998, her colleagues voted her one of the best plastic surgeons in new York City, and she was one of three physicians chosen to film the pilot for the Lifetime show “Women Docs,” which became a regular season selection. She’s also a bit of a pioneer, as plastic surgery still is a male-dominated field. Lovelle said women interested in plastic surgery often like having a female doctor.
Coming to Newton Lovelle and her husband eventually decided they were ready for a change of pace and began searching for a smaller town to live in. She and her husband liked being able to work together, but as specialists, it was challenging to find open positions in the same location. they spent some time in North Carolina but eventually found their way to Newton. “we just love the people,” she said. “… the people are really friendly, they’re just nice people.” Although new York City was an exciting place to live in, she said she and her husband wanted to take life at a slower pace and escape from the traffic and the crowds. “It was a nice change,” she said. “There’s no way I would move back.” at her Newton clinic, Lovelle Plastic Surgery, Lovelle offers services such as: face lifts, Botox, liposuction, breast reconstruction, abdominoplasty/ tummy tucks, skin cancer surgery, laser hair removal, mineral makeup, microdermabrasion, and more. She also offers Vaser Shape treatments, a non-invasive form of fat reduction that uses ultrasound technology, and a weight management program to help people maintain a healthy weight after receiving treatments.
