Now, almost two years later, the storefront has a new tenant. But instead of sliced bread, produce and frozen foods, customers will now find X-rays, mammograms, chemotherapy and other medical services.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony May 18 at 2 p.m. will mark the opening of Lutherville Personal Physicians, a 43,000-square-foot medical facility.

Patients don’t have much trouble finding the place, according to Dr. George Lowe.

“When we tell them the address, they get confused, but when we tell them ‘the old Giant’ they know exactly where we are,” Lowe said.

“They all used to shop here,” he said. “I used to shop here.”

A Lutherville resident, Lowe is medical director of both Lutherville Personal Physicians and Overlea Personal Physicians.

Both are owned and operated by Mercy Medical Center, which also has physicians offices in Ellicott City and Reisterstown.

Mercy Medical also operates the Stella Maris nursing home and the Mercy Ridge retirement community, both in Timonium, as well as a hospital complex in downtown Baltimore.

The new Lutherville site, which Mercy is leasing, cost about $5 million to renovate. Crews had to dig trenches in the concrete floor for additional plumbing, and the foundation was reinforced in places to support magnetic resonance imaging machines and other heavy equipment.

The new facility actually opened March 28, two months ahead of schedule, and hosts a breast cancer surgeon, orthopedic surgeons, gynecologic oncologists, gastroenterologists, cardiologists and several other specialists in addition to more than a dozen doctors of internal medicine and family doctors.

One member of the team is Towson resident Dr. Larry Boas, who had operated from a private practice in Cockeysville since 1976. despite more than three decades in private practice, the internal medicine doctor didn’t flinch at moving under Mercy’s umbrella.

Boas said Mercy Medical takes care of payroll, benefits and other administrative tasks while “I can do what I’m trained to do.”

Though the facility is large, Lowe said the goal is to create the “sense of a small environment, not like an airport.”

In fact, the waiting area just inside the facility’s doors resembles an airport terminal, with seating for hundreds and a row of teller windows, under which each doctor’s name is listed in large print.

But patients will notice a few differences. First, there are a few dozen half-height walls to break up the space. The walls are see-through on their upper half and, along with soft chairs and dark green carpet, help dampen sound.

“We put in these breaks to make it feel a little more cozy,” said Sandy Edwards, a senior vice president for Mercy Medical.

Lowe held up what looked like a half-inch-thick drink coaster. The plastic device has a vibrating motor and an array of lights. when a doctor or nurse is ready for a patient, that patient’s coaster vibrates and flashes.

This allows the offices to forgo the use of the public announcement system, an effort that keeps the offices quiet and “preserves patient privacy by not calling out their names,” Lowe said.

“I ripped this idea off Outback (Steakhouse),” he said.

Another thing patients will notice missing is paper.

“Everything’s computerized,” Lowe said. “You won’t see any paper charts in this office.”

While the facility hosts several types of surgeons, only minor procedures will be performed there, just as one might find at a private practice.

The facility does offer on-site MRIs, CAT scans, ultrasounds, bone-density tests and X-rays, but Lowe said more significant operations will take place at Mercy’s hospital campus in downtown Baltimore.

“We think major surgery belongs in hospitals,” Lowe said.

For those who need treatment at Mercy’s downtown facilities, however, Lutherville Personal Physicians offers a perk.

“If patients have an appointment downtown, they can park their car here for free and take the free shuttle,” Lowe said.
