Tony Parker Could Miss Olympics With Eye Injury, Sues Nightclub For $20 Million

Tony Parker may be unable to represent France in the Olympics due to an eye injury suffered earlier this month during a nightclub brawl between musician Chris Brown and members of rapper Drake’s entourage. Parker initially told reporters the injury would not prevent him from playing, but he announced Sunday on his website that the injury was much more serious than first thought and required surgery.

From Parker’s blog, translated from French by Google Translate:

I conducted additional tests on Friday afternoon and found a piece of glass that had penetrated 99% left eye. I can say today, I almost lost my eye. so I had surgery on Sunday morning under general anesthesia.

Parker is still in France, but he said he’ll return to the U.S. on July 5 at the request of the San Antonio Spurs so that his eye can be examined in new York. at that time, he will learn whether he’s been cleared to compete in the Olympics. “The decision is no longer mine,” he wrote. “It is in the hands of the physician and San Antonio.”

Parker is suing W.i.P., the new York City nightclub where the brawl took place, for $20 million. From CNN:

Parker was “sitting at a separate table, apart from Drake and Brown,” the suit said. “As a result of the altercation at the club that night, (Parker) was caused to suffer severe personal injuries.”

The suit alleges that the owners and operators of the nightclub were “negligent in permitting Drake’s entourage and Brown’s entourage to be in the club at the same time despite known tension between the two” and contends the owners failed to provide “sufficient and efficient security.”

A musician suspected of being a violent kidnapper has been charged under the dangerous Dogs Act today after five police officers were allegedly mauled by his dog during a raid.

Pierre Robinson, 25, will appear in court this afternoon accused of ‘allowing the dog to be dangerously out of control’ outside a house in Albert Square, east London.

He is also accused of kidnapping and GBH with intent, relating to an incident on March 14 in Newham, police said.

Five policemen were in hospital last night after being savaged by the animal, and were said to have ‘life-changing’ wounds as serious as those seen after a shootout.

One officer had his arm broken between the animal’s jaws, while others had chunks of flesh torn from their legs and arms. Some will require plastic surgery, and one could lose several fingers.

Savage: Mobile phone footage shows a Met Police officer having to to take evasive action on a wall, while another is set upon by the crazed animal

Under attack: the officer continues to struggle against the violent dog as his colleague can do nothing but look on in terror

Lashing out: A stunned local resident in East London perches on a wall as two police officers are savaged by the animal yards away

Neutralised: Camera phone footage shows the moment the dog was shot by armed police after a bloody street battle where the animal savaged five officers

A police marksman brought the carnage to an end when he blasted the dog four times with a shotgun after it wascornered in the street.

Robinson now faces four charges at Thames Magistrates’ Court, including possession of a pit bull dog, contrary to section one of the dangerous Dogs Act.

The second allegation states he allowed his dog to be dangerously out of control in injuring five people.

He also faces the kidnapping and GBH with intent charges.

Scotland Yard has admitted it failed to pick up on intelligence that the animal lived at the property.

The 9am swoop was part of Operation Big Wing, a major Scotland Yard purge on wanted suspects across the capital.

The 48-hour operation saw hundreds of officers carrying out searches for people wanted by police or who had failed to appear at court.

Crazed: Armed police had to shoot the animal four times before it was finally dead

Running for cover: the dog, whose exact breed is yet to be revealed, mauls the leg of a Met Police officer

Alarm: Residents in Newham, East London, said they heard voices shouting for help as the dog went on the rampage outside

Battle: Officers who eventually restrained the dog had to shoot it four times before it finally gave in

Blood-stained: Officers guard the scene where earlier five police constables were savaged while executing a raid

Mauling: Neighbours heard screams just after 9.30am this morning as the crazed dog savaged the officers in Newham

Neighbours revealed they had reported the animal, described as a brown dobermann/pitbull cross called Poison,to the council several times.

They said it was responsible for otherattacks, including one in which a builder was pulled from his bicycle and mauled so badly ‘it looked like he was being eaten alive’.

The attack took place on a residentialstreet in Stratford, east London, where patches of dried blood remain visible along a 30ft stretch of the road.

Witnesses said the dog ran free after a team searching for the man broke down the door of a terraced house.

Mobile phone footage taken by a passer-by shows the animal pouncing on one policeman and biting his arm.

The officer tries to fight the dog off by grabbing at its neck – but the animal is too strong.

At one point, it clamps its jaws so tightly around the man’s limb that it is lifted off the ground when he tries to shake it off.

A colleague is seen climbing on to a wall to escape the animal.

LOCALS WARNED OF DEVIL DOG

Residents in Albert Square, Newham, said the dog has attacked before – mauling a cyclist, last summer.

Pregnant Rehema Nyange said locals had repeatedly called Newham Council. but nothing was done.

‘when I saw it in the street, I would always run away. I was scared. there are people with children on this street and there’s a school close by. It could easily have attackedanybody,’ she said.

I’m glad it’s finally gone.’

Speaking about the attack she witnessed last September the 30-year-old said: ‘It attacked a guy as he rode his bicycle to work. the dog was running around the street. Then it got the man’s leg. It bit him so bad.

‘It must have took a chunk out of it as when the paramedics came they had to cut his trousers off to get to it. It was a big wound.

‘he was crying like a baby but people were too scared to go out and help him in case the dog turned on them.’

A Newham Council spokesman said: ‘On 28 April 2011, the council investigated a complaint that a dog had bitten a cyclist in Albert Square.

‘On 6 may 2011, the council’s animal welfare officers conducted an initial visit to the property but there was no response.

‘This case was discussed by police and the council in June 2011.

‘As this is now subject to a criminal investigation it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time.’

The dog was finally cornered by a dozen officers who arrived from a nearby station armed with riot shields.

Colleagues from the Metropolitan Police’s CO19 armed unit then arrived and shot it.

Dennis Clarke, 71, said he called Newham Council three years ago to register his fears but was told officials could not do anything until the dog bit someone.

Describing the latest attack, he said: ‘the first I knew was when I heard someone yelling: “help! help!”

‘I came out my front door, and I could see the dog had the police officer’s leg and it wouldn’t let go. It was hanging off him.’

Student Gemma Smith, 27, added: ‘I woke up to screaming and I thought someone had been stabbed.’

She said officers told residents to go inside once they cornered the animal.

‘I heard gun shots. when I looked out of the window, the dog was shaking onthe ground.’

A police source said four of the five officers suffered ‘life-changing injuries’, and that one may need to have one or more fingers amputated.

‘They have suffered some really nasty injuries; broken bones, gashes that will need dozens of stitches and even plastic surgery,’ he said.

‘the injuries are as bad as being shot. It has taken out huge chunks of flesh.’

All five were said to be in a stable condition at the Royal London Hospital last night.

The Met confirmed last night a 25-year-old man arrested at the scene was being questioned over the attack, who has now been named.

Newham Council confirmed it had investigated a complaint that the dog had attacked a cyclist last April, and said the case was discussed with police in June.

An inquiry is under way to establish why officers did not know the dog was in the property.

DANGEROUS DOGS ACT

Underthe dangerous Dogs Act 1991 (and as amended in 1997) it is illegal to own any Specially Controlled Dogs without specific exemption from a court.

The dogs have to be muzzled and kept on a lead in public, they must be registered and insured, neutered, and microchipped. the Act also bans the breeding, sale and exchange of these dogs, even if they are on the Index of Exempted Dogs.

Four types in particular were identified by the Act:

  • Pit Bull Terrier
  • Japanese Tosa
  • Dogo Argentino
  • Fila Brasileiro

TheAct also covers cross breeds of these dog. dangerous dogs are classified by ‘type’, not by breed label. This means that whether a dog is prohibited will depend on its physical characteristics, and whether they match the description of a prohibited ‘type’.

I’m convinced we’ll find a star on The Voice — not just a sob story

Voice presenter Sharon Corr

Voice presenter Sharon Corr

I MIGHT be having a completely nuts time trying juggle the Voice of Ireland, rehearsals for a gig and working on an album — but the school run still has to get done.

In between rehearsing for my gig in the Pepper Cannister church this evening and working on my second solo album, it’s been particularly busy for me this week.

I feel like I’m always running in and out of the door. but it’s great being involved in a major TV show. For me, it’s always been about the music and if I can blend it in a positive way, that’s great for me.

It’s high octane there every Sunday, the nerves are flying around the place and I’m loving my fellow coaches. I think we all want our artists to win as this will be a genuine step-up for people into the music industry.

The reaction to Bressie has been quite funny. he is gorgeous and I wouldn’t blame the girls for being ‘where has he been hiding?’ He’s a big hunk of a guy and he’s genuinely lovely and a great musician. I like that there’s a wee bit of the tables turning as men have been ogling women on TV for years so why not have it the other way around?

There was a lot of reaction to me saying I wouldn’t have Botox and it was lovely the amount of support I got from that. People said ‘fair play for being who you are’. but I wouldn’t judge another woman for having it.

If it makes them feel better about themselves, who are we to judge?

My head’s all in my music and my three kids so I didn’t even hear about Danielle Meagher saying it at the time — my agent told me.

It was good for column inches and she was just selling her wares but I found it quite flattering. I’m in my 40s, I haven’t had cosmetic surgery, I’m not considering it and I’m happy that I want to be a good role model for my daughter and grow old gracefully.

It’s very hard on women out there and we’re all under increasing pressure to look great whereas men are told they look better with age. the standards are very, very severe and I wouldn’t criticise another women for having it.

I wouldn’t rule it out for ever, never say never, but it’s very unlikely because it’s just not something that would be for me. I saw all that stuff in LA where someone has a gorgeous body from plastic surgery and then this really old face that just doesn’t match.

I’ve got a big weekend now as I’m rehearsing with all my artists today for this weekend’s show and we’ll also do a full dress rehearsal.

I would definitely like to do another TV show after this but it would have to be the right show and done in a positive way. I feel that the Irish have gone through enough awful stuff in the last couple of years so to actually consider trying to add to that kind of negativity by putting singers down is just insane to me.

The Voice is proof that you can have a music show that is positive and people will really enjoy it because it’s quality entertainment.

There is a recording contract for the overall winner but the talent is so good, I can see several people getting deals as well.

What you get with a lot of other shows like X Factor is the same type of pop vocalists all competing against each other and there is that put-down process of humiliation.

But with the Voice, it’s so varied.

You have Vanessa Whelan who’s classical, she’s an opera singer and she’s amazing performer. I also have Nollaig O’Connor on my team who’s very interesting. She’s totally unique, quite introverted in some ways and not showbiz at all, I would compare her to Sinead O’Connor. but then we also have someone Bressie’s Conor Quinn who’s like Tom Waits.

What makes it different from other shows is that sob stories need not apply because we’re genuinely trying to find a great voice and not a tragic background to make people vote for a voice that is less than great.

The offer came up before the summer of last year and I really wanted to think about it before I agreed. when I started watching the American Voice, I was blown away. the world is going the way of TV talent shows so why not have a great one and one that doesn’t humiliate people?

You don’t see any of the judges on the other shows getting up and performing with their acts so it makes it a level playing field as you’re putting yourself in the contestants’ shoes. We’re all in the same boat. And nobody got into audition for us who couldn’t sing. We couldn’t judge them on their looks so it was a very pure form of finding a good voice.

All the judges genuinely get on great. the Sunday that we all performed together for the first time as a band, it was a total blast. Kian and I were still singing afterwards backstage because it all went too fast for us.

We were so excited afterwards that we all went to the pub to wind down and just sat there talking. the lovely thing is the four of us can just sit there and talk because we have so much in common.

I was talking to Kian about the dynamic of being in Westlife compared to being in the Corrs and the difference between being a solo artist. the whole industry is very, very tough. There’s so many ups and downs and if artists can’t stand together, we have no chance.

I’m busy writing my second album right now so I was working on that on Tuesday and Wednesday as well as rehearsing with my artists and then all the judges will play the Pepper Cannister church tonight.

We’re doing the Arcade fire song Wake up. I also have Cormac Debarra and Don Mescall as guests on the show, so it should be a great night.

The Voice of Ireland airs on RTE one at 6.30pm on Sunday

Welcome back to the first Singles Club of the year of the apocalypse. Join our intrepid musical explorers as we delve into the murky depths of the week’s singles releases. Can any of them cheer up disappointed puppy?

Alyssa Reid – alone Again

Having never heard of Alyssa Reid, I approached a video that’s almost at two million hits on youtube with interest. however, popularity rarely being a precursor for talent, Reid – who apparently lives in a hovel with a myriad of other couples in varying states of melancholic distress – has created little more than a vapid rehash of an old 80s hit with some rapping thrown in for good measure. Despite Reid insisting ‘I can play the piano like a real musician’, two minutes into this four minute onslaught of pleading looks and self-pitying pouting you’ll find yourself shouting “No.. no, make it stop. MAKE IT STOP.” – Lucie Vincer

Pixie Lott – Kiss the Stars

Pixie Lott’s latest release is overwhelmingly lacking in originality or vocal prowess. in fact, it is rather mediocre manufactured pop, and does nothing to help her credit as an artist. Lyrics range from rather cliche “We’ll write our names in lights” to uninspired euphemisms “put the plug in the socket, give me all your power.” a brief dub break in the middle signals a direction that could have made the single interesting, but Lott continues to lack any development and need rethink her choice of material, as more filler could see the nail in her career. – Alex Jackson

Lil Wayne ft. Bruno Mars – Mirror

The general mention of Lil’ Wayne will generally bring out eye-rolling or involuntary heaving in most hip-hop enthusiasts, but it’s not as if he’s entirely incapable of producing anything but the absolute worst. This single is an example of him doing something different for the better – The beat is cold and understated, the autotune is minimal and… holy hell, he’s managed to go a verse without a half-rhyme or an annoying ‘Hashtag’ line! no, the problem here instead lies with Bruno Mars; his flaccid crooning does nothing for the moody sentiments. Maybe Weezy should have called up John Legend instead. – Nathan Blades

(Holy sh*t Lil’ Wayne’s tats are awful. not Gucchi Mane-levels of bad, but wow.)

Lana Del Rey – Born to Die

Though following a breakthrough single as renowned and successful as Video Games, Lana Del Rey’s second single ‘Born to Die’ does in fact enhance rather than dilute the mysterious singer’s reputation. as in Video Games her drawling voice is beautifully haunting, this time in reaching out into high-pitched, girlish tones during the infectious yet downbeat chorus. placed alongside complimentary samples and string arrangements this is as good as pop music gets. Forget the rumours about authenticity and plastic surgery: what’s important is that the music is the real deal. – Stephen Puddicombe

Cover Drive – Twilight

So it’s been proven that January is the most depressing month and apparently the british public have decided to up the ante and push this song to number one. it got to number one. there are honestly no better songs being released?? Sure it sounds like summer in a can but look out the window people – that’s just even more depressing when you realise it’s still grey and gloomy! This is 90s pop at best – tell me honestly that you can’t imagine S Club 7 singing this… not sure about Jon, Paul or Bradley rapping though. And don’t get me started on the video, there is a ‘keytar’?!? why? Oh Son, I am disappoint. – Jane Catterall

So that’s all from Singles Club this week and the verdict is in. It’s not looking good for disappointed puppy. not good at all. you have officially kicked a puppy! Rectify this next week or the RSPCA is getting involved.
