'Beautiful witches' defy the ravages of age

Masako Osako is a “bimajo” (beautiful witch), which, despite the odd ring of the phrase in English, is a compliment.

According to the monthly magazine “Bisuto” (beast), it means a woman “over 35 with a radiance that gives no suggestion of their age.”

In a contest in autumn 2011, Osako was one of only 21 finalists chosen from over 2,000 entrants in a “bimajo contest” run by the magazine.

Her new witch status has got Osako invitations to launches of new cosmetic products, appearances in magazines, and helped her get back into her job in the cosmetics industry after taking time out to rear her children. she represents an ideal many middle-aged and older women are determined to emulate.

Around three years ago, Osako fell ill and put on around 10 kilograms in weight, partly because of medicine she was taking. Glancing at her reflection in a shop window, she was shocked: “I looked frumpy, the epitome of a middle-aged woman. …”

Osako began eating more vegetables, turned down offers to eat out and quietly began attending a gym up to five times a week without telling her husband. she learned of the bimajo contest and vowed to enter the next year. when asked to write an essay for her gym, she stated: “It’s all so I can become a future bimajo.”

Over the course of the following year and a half, she lost 13 kilograms and shrunk from a size 13 to a seven. she hesitated to enter the contest after taking a photo as a memento of her achievement, but eventually made her submission online only 10 minutes before the deadline.

“My outer appearance has changed, and so has my inner self. my outlook has broadened too, and I feel as if I’ve grown stronger,” she says.

The bimajo phenomenon is part of a wider trend among an aging Japanese population that is spending more than ever before on warding off the ravages of time.

The market for anti-aging skincare cosmetics such as wrinkle treatments was 313.2 billion yen ($4 billion) in 2010. that represents 150 percent growth in 10 years, according to market research company Fuji Keizai Group.

Newcomers from other industries have been entering the market, with Fujifilm’s launch of its Astalift anti-aging cosmetic range in 2007 a particularly prominent example of the trend.

Supplements and other health foods with anti-aging properties are also experiencing sales growth. the market for functional foodstuffs that help improve the skin, weight loss, and strengthen bones was 648.8 billion yen in 2010, a 2 percent increase on the previous year, according to Fuji Keizai Skin-beautifying products, with key components such as collagen and hyaluronic acid enjoying 3.3 percent growth, and bone and joint-supporting products primarily featuring glucosamine and other ingredients, which became popular with middle-aged and elderly people suffering from joint pain, boosting their sales by a whopping 16.9 percent.

The book “Goju-sai o Koete mo Sanju-dai ni Mieru Ikikata” (a lifestyle that makes you look like you’re in your thirties when you’re in your fifties), written by Yoshinori Nagumo, 56, and published by Kodansha, was the fourth biggest seller in the first half of 2012, according to figures collated by distributor Tohan. Several similar books from rival publishing companies are understood to be on the way to the market.

National Institute of Health and Nutrition Information Center chief Keizo Umegaki points out that the actual benefits of some of the products is unproven, with purported effectiveness is not adequately backed up by scientific proof.

“Care needs to be taken to avoid excessive ingestion. It’s important to have a balanced diet, moderate exercise and rest,” he says.

But, for some Japanese women, the quest for eternal youth involves much more than that. more than 22,000 Japanese people received cosmetic medical treatment in South Korea in 2011, double the previous year’s figure. Almost 80 percent were women.

Seoul’s Gangnam district is known as a hub for cosmetic surgery. at the Arumdaun nara Dermatology & Plastic Surgery near the Gangnam subway station, one of its walls is covered in autographed photos of South Korean stars. the popularity of South Korean television dramas in Japan and government promotion of medical tourism has driven up demand, and the clinic’s Japanese clientele has doubled in the last two years, with around 2,000 visiting in 2011.

It offers everything from invasive cosmetic surgery to laser treatment for liver spots and wrinkles.

“Many Japanese are still afraid of undergoing even commonplace cosmetic surgery procedures in South Korea,” admits Lee Sang-jun, president of the Arumdaunnara clinic network, but that is likely to change. “I used to detect a resistance to laser surgery, but now they’ve come to accept it. Attitudes are changing little by little.”

Kris Jenner’s Lip Blows Up, Claims Its An Allergic Reaction

Kris Jenner’s Lip Blows Up Posted by Dirtiest 3 July, 2012 – 11:23 AM

The phrase ‘I think you’ve over done it love’ was made for this story.

The Kardashian matriarch Kris Jenner has either been stung by a bee or has over done with the lip filler.

It’s claimed on the latest episode of Keeping Up… that she had a suffered a bad reaction to some food she had eaten.

Stop laughing at the back this is serious.

Don’t you find it odd that this allergic reaction has restricted itself just to her top lip? now I’m no expert but surely if you have an allergic reaction to food and it makes one lip swell up, surely the other would swell too or there would be a rash at least?

It also dawned on us that maybe it runs in the family. Remember daughter Kim suffered a similar reaction to botox in 2010? You don’t, have a look here.

After doing three seconds of research on the internet, the website Hollywoodlife.com had actually gone to the great length of obtaining the opinion of a real Doctor. Plastic surgeon Dr. Renato Calabria who was quite frank in his assessment.  “It’s definitely not a food allergy. There is no food allergy that affects selectively one or the other lip! It is an abnormal swelling that could be caused by a large amount of the filler.”

Thanks for clearing that one up Doc.

Plastic Surgey: The New Beauty Norm?

This is a good topic to discuss especially now since the popularity of all the make-over shows. I have always been curious as to why people, mostly women, have this idea that they are expected to look a certain way in order to fit in with society.

We all would like to believe that quaint saying, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but how true and meaningful is that phrase when the beholder has been brainwashed, so to speak, into subscribing to the belief that beauty is the artificial look we see on glamour mags, in TV commercials, and even in some children’s books? for some time now, that image has consisted mainly of white women and the white standard of beauty.

I decided to take this question of plastic surgery and the search for beauty and see how it can affect some women in the African-American community. according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, African-Americans make up only 6% of plastic surgery patients. why is this? Do African-American women have a more positive self/body image or is it that many cannot afford it? and for the 6% who do have surgery, to which standard of beauty were they trying to aspire?

I chose to start my search for the white standard of beauty in 1960. I chose that year because at the time, a TV show was airing that sought to teach moral and societal lessons through fantastical tales.
Two episodes of this show were very telling and prophetic, and they both dealt with how society viewed beauty and the expectations placed on women to be beautiful.
That show was, the Twilight Zone.

Beauty in 1960.
Rod Serling offered us a tale of beauties and beasts in episode #42 entitled: Eye of the Beholder.
Here’s a brief synopsis of the show I found at the Twilight Zone Guide:
Janet Tyler anxiously awaits the outcome of her latest surgery. Janet, who’s abnormal face has made her an outcast, has had her eleventh hospital visit – the maximum allowed by the State. If it didn’t succeed, she will be sent to live in a village where others of her kind are segregated. as her bandages are removed, she is revealed to be very beautiful. the doctor draws back in horror. as the lights come on we see the others, their faces are misshapen and deformed. as Janet runs from her room crying, she runs into another of her kind, a handsome man named Walter Smith. he is in charge of an outcast village, and he assures her that she will eventually feel she belongs. he tells her to remember the old saying: Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Although the show was filmed in black and white, we can clearly see that Ms. Tyler is Caucasian. the doctors appear to have darker skin, nevertheless, the idea here was that the viewers empathized with Ms. Tyler because she was the classic blonde, slender beauty commonly seen in 1960′s fashion magazines.
As the show closes, the narrator speaks:
Now the questions that come to mind. where is this place and when is it, what kind of world where ugliness is the norm and beauty the deviation from that norm? the answer is, it doesn’t make any difference. because the old saying happens to be true. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, in this year or a hundred years hence, on this planet or wherever there is human life, perhaps out among the stars. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Lesson to be learned.in the Twilight Zone.

1964: the Standard Continues
Episode #137, in Season five, is called, Number twelve looks just like You, and was adapted by a short story called the Beautiful People. In this episode, we meet Marilyn, a young woman who is about to go through a rite of passage in her community. this rite is called the Transformation and it requires citizens to choose among several models of bodies into which they will be transformed. the message here is that this society only sees one standard of beauty and that one will not be happy unless they look and act just like everyone else. Opening Narration:
Given the chance, what young girl wouldn’t happily exchange a plain face for a lovely one? what girl could refuse the opportunity to be beautiful? for want of a better estimate, let’s call it the year 2000. at any rate, imagine a time in the future when science has developed a means of giving everyone the face and body he dreams of. It may not happen tomorrow–but it happens now, in the Twilight Zone.

Once again, the beautiful people are all white and we don’t see any women or men of color. what was this episode trying to tell black women about beauty? the closing narration:
Portrait of a young lady in love–with herself. Improbable? Perhaps. But in an age of plastic surgery, body building, and an infinity of cosmetics, let us hesitate to say impossible. these and other strange blessings may be waiting in the future–which after all, is the Twilight Zone.

Beauty 40 Years Later

Some aspects of beauty standards have changed, but not much. We do see more black models and beautiful black women, but when you look at the majority of the more famous ones, (Tyra, Halle, Janet, Vanessa Williams, Beyonce, a few of whom have had plastic surgery, on their noses and other body parts), you can see straight away that they have many Caucasian attributes: small, pinched noses, lighter complexion, lighter eyes, straight, lightly colored hair. It is rare that you will see a model with very dark skin, a tight afro, wide, round, larger nose, and full, large lips. Flip through any issue of Vogue or Glamour and look for that image I just described. Then look for the first image I described.

So, are black women trying to aspire to the white standard of beauty when they seek plastic surgery?

According to Cynthia Winston, assistant professor of psychology at Howard University in Washington, D.C., We really don’t know much about how blacks are influenced. Most of the research focuses on perceptions related to skin color. Foe most African-Americans, perception can be shaped by their environment. for example, an African-American woman growing up in an all-white neighborhood in Nebraska may be more likely than an African-American woman raised in inner-city Detroit to compare herself with white images of beauty.

(Source: African-American Women & Plastic Surgery: Self-Improvement or Self-Hatred? by Angela D. Johnson, Sept. 2, 2003)

Now what?

I suppose, it all comes down to how one feels inside about themselves. But there is this viscous cycle of doubt that women constantly face so it’s often hard to reconcile your inner voices with the outside images thrown at you everyday. Many women buy into the trends and fashions that dictate beauty. TV shows and print ads abound with images of sexy women. Fitness clubs persuade women to join not so they will lower their risk of heart disease, but so they will aspire to be beautiful on the outside. no one tries to sell things that will help them on the inside.

In the end, you can look at all of this and say that there will always be standards of beauty and those who aspire to live up those standards, and those wanting to make a profit off those standards (cosmetic companies, ad agencies, modeling agencies, fashion designers, plastic surgeons, psychotherapists). the media portrays what people want to see and apparently, it’s sex and beauty.

Plastic Surgey: The New Beauty Norm?

Breaking: Portland’s not that cool, L.A. not that superficial

No one likes a stereotype, unless it’s about someone else — then it’s hilarious. Los Angeles? Celebrity-obsessed lipo-junkies. Portland? Hipster snobs. Boston? Sports fanatics who think that a win for the Sox somehow makes them winners, too. There’s nothing really wrong with these stereotypes — in fact, they give each city a unique cultural identity. how true they are is another matter. So in wildly unscientific form, we decided to look at the data. this is just for fun, so try not to take it too seriously and freak out. We’re looking at you, New York.

Los Angeles is superficial

Sun-baked idiots who care more about Beemers and boob jobs than culture and current events. That’s how we think of Los Angeles, but it more aptly describes a more God-fearing locale: Salt Lake City, which has the most plastic surgeons per capita, Googles the phrase “breast implants” with alarming frequency, and spends more money on both cars and cosmetic procedures than any other city in the nation.

How the Mormon mecca became a nip-tuck town is a bit of a mystery — one theory is that moms here tend to be younger, which leads to more “mommy makeovers.” And though it’s tempting to assume they spend more on their cars because they need snow-friendly SUVs, cities like Denver and Albany, N.Y., spend far less on theirs.

Point being, Los Angeles doesn’t deserve its superficial rep any more than lots of other cities. Washingtonians blow more money on clothes. Atlanta gets more hair transplants. New Orleans watches more TV. And of the 50 biggest cities, L.A. has the 11th most college degrees per square mile. “As someone who’s lived in both New York and D.C., I can say with certainty that Los Angeles is no more shallow than either of those two cities, both of which are considered to be loci for deep and thoughtful people,” says Cord Jefferson, staffer at Los Angeles-based Good Magazine. “Shallow people live everywhere, and there’s not a surplus of them in L.A.”

Boston sports fans are fanatics

Lots of stats support this, but one blew our minds: despite having the league’s highest ticket prices, the last Red Sox game that didn’t sell out was played in 2003. the 712-game sellout streak has become baseball legend, and it’s well earned — a full one-third of the city attends a Boston pro-sports event every year. As such, the city’s rabid fan base is seen as an advertising gold mine. A marketing study of 81 cities pegged Boston’s pro-sports fans as the nation’s most passionate, with two-thirds identifying as “avid.” Brand Keys Inc., a company that studies customer engagement, compiles an annual Sports Fan Loyalty Index, and only Boston’s teams regularly make the top five in all of the major pro-sports categories.

As stereotypes go, this one’s well deserved. somehow we doubt they’ll mind the label.

New York drivers are nuts

New Yorkers have a reputation for driving like they’re being chased by a tidal wave. But by the numbers, New York motorists appear to be less dangerous than those in several other cities. according to Allstate Insurance, drivers in Philadelphia, Washington and Los Angeles suffer more collisions per capita. And Orlando, Fla., drivers kill far more pedestrians (though pedestrian-unfriendly infrastructure surely plays a part in this).

So why the sense of mayhem? New York City cab driver Eugene Salomon points to a taxi-dominated streetscape, where drivers are both in competition and paid by the mile-per-hour. “in those off-peak hours it’s a horse race to find the next fare,” he says. plus, Manhattan is flooded with drivers from New Jersey, who are more crash-prone, says Allstate.

But New Yorkers needn’t boast. They scored dead last on a recent nationwide rules-of-the-road quiz. And the NYPD often seems more concerned with ticketing bicyclists than enforcing safe driving. Salomon, for his part, thinks the worst drivers are in L.A. “I felt intimidated on their damned expressways,” he says. After that, however, “I’d say New Yorkers are the second craziest.”

Miami is all gym rats

Would that Miami were a perpetual Spuds Mackenzie-era beer commercial. Alas, it just ain’t so, says the 10-days-to-better-abs bible, Men’s Fitness. in 2009, the magazine ranked Miami as America’s fattest big city, with over 60 percent of its residents at risk for weight-related health problems. Miami also has three times as many fast-food joints as the national average. And though lots of Miamians own gym memberships, fewer than average actually use them. the city’s high poverty rate correlates with its high obesity numbers.

Miami-based personal trainer Shuichi Take sees the gym-rat stereotype as stemming from the outsize visibility of hot spots like South Beach, as well as the city’s “semi-legitimate modeling scene.” the weather also makes Miami a prime spot for the type of sports pursued by the shirtless and beautiful. “Volleyball, paddle boarding, kite boarding, wake boarding,” says Take, “Miami is an outdoor-activity town.”

Las Vegas is filled with gamblers

The Strip may be for tourists, but Vegas locals gamble, too. according to a study conducted by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, gambling and going to the movies virtually tie as Clark County residents’ two preferred ways to spend time. Nearly two-thirds of the city’s residents gamble occasionally. by comparison, only a quarter of Americans gambled in a casino in 2010.

Anthony Curtis, president of the city guide LasVegasAdvisor.com, thinks those stats give a warped perception of life in Las Vegas, which he says is thoroughly pedestrian for the typical resident. “People here do everything they’d do in Detroit or Atlanta or anywhere else,” he says. “sometimes they may go to a show or a comedy club and it happens to be in a casino, and while they’re there they’ll put twenty bucks in a machine.”

Everyone in Salt Lake City is a Mormon

It’s not the holy land it used to be; less than half the city follows the Church of Latter-day Saints, and Utah as a whole is only around 60 percent Mormon these days. Statewide, the percentage of Mormons has been declining for years, according to secret church membership counts obtained by the Salt Lake City Tribune in 2005. Experts attribute the drop to Hispanic immigrants moving to Utah for jobs, not religion. If current trends continue, Utah will lose its Mormon majority by 2030.

Local non-Mormon Steven Kachocki thinks the city is slowly becoming more progressive as a result. “although we suffer from alcohol-deprivation, there certainly seem to be more same-sex couples than there were even five years ago,” he says. “As it is with our sense of style in Utah — about 10 years behind the rest of the country — so will be our move to more liberal thinking.”

Portland is all hipsters

In 2001, the Portland Oregonian reported that sales of Pabst Blue Ribbon — at the time, an obscure beer associated with blue-collar roughnecks — were inexplicably soaring in Portland. PBR soon caught on everywhere else, and the city has been seen as a hipster epicenter ever since, spawning dedicated blogs, newspaper Style section paeans and a satirical TV show.

The conventional wisdom that Portland is filled with hipsters is deserved, thinks Michael Andersen, publisher of Portland Afoot: “more so than anywhere else I’ve lived,” he says. And several hipster-correlated metrics do seem to confirm the stereotype (using, of course, more stereotypes): the city has the highest percentage of bicycle commuters in America, PETA ranks it as the country’s second veggie-friendliest city, and Oregon — at least as of 2008 — remains the world’s top consumer of sweet, goes-down-smooth PBR.

Portlandians can be sensitive to the hipster label. “As I understand it, hipsters are young creative people who aspire to a kind of independent culture,” says Marc Moscato, an artist, curator, activist and president of the Dill Pickle Club, a nonprofit that organizes educational projects about Portland. “But there’s sort of a negative connotation to the word too, some even going so far as to say they [hipsters] are ruining Portland by the increasing gentrification and displacement.” Which is ironic, since Moscato and Andersen both believe it’s the city’s affordable housing that draws the young and creative. Before you know it, those PBRs will be two bucks a can.

Susan Sarandon: Plastic Surgery

You know why I love Susan Sarandon?

Because Susan Sarandon doesn’t give a damn! if she says it, you know it’s coming from her heart and she doesn’t leave anything to second guessing. You don’t have to read between the lines. Especially now. because Susan Sarandon is erasing them.

The cougar is on the prowl!

Since giving her partner of 23 years, Tim Robbins, the boot in 2009, Sarandon has been linked to a man half her age. In the latest edition of People magazine, the Oscar winner puts it all out there for mass consumption.

On plastic surgery:“I’ve had some lipo under my chin and under my eyes,” the 65-year-old actress tells the magazine.

Now if only those tricks in Hollywood half her age would admit to their plastic surgery procedures. because we all know who’s had work done. They just won’t admit that they drown in a sea of botox and Juvaderm on a weekly basis.

On the subject of the alleged boytoy in her life:“Dating is such a stupid word. You can say…we are collaborating in a lot of different areas.”

Now you see why I love her? That’s going to be my phrase of 2012…“We’re not having sex. We’re collaborating.”

Susan Sarandon is proof that a true cougar cannot be caged.

Anti-Aging or Pro-Aging? Should Be About Coping Not Medicine

Anti-aging is a phrase we see everywhere. from cosmetics and health products to plastic surgery and other medical procedures, we are in an age of trying to stay young forever.

An article in the Washington Post interviews Nortin Hadler, author of several books on medical overtreatment, who now is discussing the ‘medicalization’ of aging. He points out a couple of really important things that we should all consider as we get older. one is that aging shouldn’t be looked at as a disease—it is and should always be a natural process that will have its ups and downs. We can only hope that our bodies do not fall apart, we don’t lose our memory or other indications of mortality as we get into the later stage of life. Instead of merely seeking ways to fix it, we need to consult our doctors about our options and often surgery is not the best choice.

Hadler argues: “You want to know whether a proposed intervention will be effective given your context: your age, your degree of frailty, other illnesses that you have. how much benefit will you get: an extra three months, an extra year? if it’s a year, what kind of year will it be? will I feel absolutely awful? what will the quality of my life be?”

Hadler gives an example of a patient who has had a spouse die recently, comes to see the doctor for knee pain. in our culture, we are primed to assume that the knee pain is interfering with coping with her loss. Science suggests the opposite: the grieving makes the knee pain seem more intense.

The doctor’s job is not to give her pain meds, it is to first help her realize the importance of the coping process.

How we look at growing old has an impact on our quality of life. Perspective, especially in this modern age where there seems to be products to “fix” anything, is more important than ever. “I want to reframe it by talking about what we can do to circumvent limitations and how to cope when we can’t,” said Hadler.

We are in a new time. the time is such that many people are turning 60 and then they have to consider what they might do with the next 25 years of their life. this is not a thought that we had back in the day. We can only hope that these golden years are a pleasant experience, and appropriately adjusting to the changes of life is one way to keep a better quality of life.

When we are faced with a problem and are considering the pros and cons of treatment, Hadler recommends that we ask medical professionals about the likelihood of the same outcome, or close to the same, if one doesn’t have the treatment? Out of every 100 people, how many are helped by this intervention? Key factors like these can help us make better decisions about how to deal with the curveballs aging gives us.

If we are lucky enough to survive to be that age, we need to cherish it and work towards good health and good aging, and not anti-aging.

WISE — Wise County’s Remote Area Medical (RAM) Health Expedition, providing free medical, dental and eye care services to all-comers, underscores a real-life twist to the baseball movie that coined the phrase, ‘if you build it, they will come.”

People from 15 other states besides Virginia swarmed to the Wise County Fairgrounds for Friday’s opening, including as far away as Utah. other states represented were Massachusetts, new Hampshire, Indiana and Illinois, according to statistics rendered by Clinchco-based Health Wagon staffers on the 1,500 patients seen and treated on Friday.

As could be expected, patients from Wise County accounted for the greatest number, but less than a third — at 31 percent — of the total, revealing that over two-thirds of those seeking health care assistance at RAM come not just from neighboring counties but those in Kentucky and Tennessee. there were 159 patients from Tennessee treated on Friday.

Of the total numbers treated Friday, 55.9 percent were female, 43.9 percent male and .1 percent, or two individuals, were listed as “other.” a further breakdown revealed 52.9 percent of Friday’s patient count were uninsured, 19.2 percent are on Medicaid and 18.5 percent on Medicare. Organizers suspect underinsured numbers, if they could be accurately tallied, would be significant.

With 74 dental chairs operating at full capacity, by 8 a.m. Saturday further dental referrals were suspended through at least noon. Health Wagon Executive Director Theresa Gardner said more than 400 patients provided registration numbers on Friday were carried over into Saturday with at least 750 new patients let into the grounds by 8:30 a.m. Saturday.

“We are essentially cut off on dental for the time being today, but we’re still OK on medical and eye (slots),” she said. “We will know by noon if we can take any more dental patients later today, and typically we are able to do that once we work our way through numbers of patients by then.”

With more than 1,700 volunteers, most veterans of previous RAM events including another large contingent from The University of Virginia Health system, Gardner said 11 years of experience translates into a relatively smooth operation.

RAM events in other parts of the country typically report up to one-third of registered patients leaving because of long lines and waiting periods, but Gardner said less than 1 percent of patients who register leave before they can receive treatment.

“Really, I think it’s been very efficient and orderly. Oh, we had minor problems come up here and there, but we’ve dealt with them. That’s to be expected with anything of this scale, and in fact we’re sort of surprised it’s just minor things we have to deal with,” she said.

“but things have gone very smooth and all the credit goes to all the volunteers and the planning. We’ve been hearing from our volunteers that this year, so far, has been the best and smoothest we’ve ever had.”

Dr. Victoria Weiss, a Charlottesville optometrist, has volunteered at all 11 RAM events in Wise County and finds the event mellowing with age like a fine wine. Sort of.

“I have done every one of these and it does make me old, and I’m getting older this weekend,” she grinned. In truth, whatever Weiss’ age, she could pass as at least five if not 10 years younger.

Her eye care team discovered a retinal tear in the eye of one patient on Friday and the patient has been referred to laser surgery for a permanent fix.

Another notable medical condition encountered by health care volunteers on Friday was a 9-inch-long benign fatty cyst on a patient’s back. Called a lipoma, the cyst was removed by a plastic surgeon at the fairgrounds.

Teresa Casey of Grundy availed herself of free care for the first time, and had a bright smile in time for her birthday as a goal.

“I’ve been here since 6 (p.m. Thursday). Slept in the car. four of us,” she said. “I’ve got a birthday coming up Tuesday and I want some false teeth for my birthday so I can go back to eating good and smile. Thanks to (the RAM volunteers) I’ll be able to smile for the first time since ever. I wouldn’t be able to afford it otherwise. I can’t tell you what something like this means for people like me.”

Gardner said the spirit of volunteerism shines at RAM.

“We’re blessed to have so many people come out and help us,” she said. “I think Judy Miller (Norton’s commissioner of revenue who volunteers each year at RAM) said it best yesterday. ‘It’s not work, it’s a joy.’ That’s as close as you can come, I guess, to saying in as few words as possible what happens here every year.”
