Cape Town – South Africans may be tight-lipped when it comes to admitting they’ve had “work” done, but the local plastic surgery industry is steadily growing.

Dr Anushka Reddy, owner of Medi-Sculpt Aesthetic Solutions and president of the South African Association of Cosmetic Doctors (SAACD), says breast augmentation, followed by liposuction, are the top two most popular plastic surgery procedures in the country. A new trend emerging in the local market is genioplasty – or a chin implant – as well as buttock implants.

The country is also one of the world’s top destinations for “surgery and safari”.

Denise Hoogervorst, director of medical tourism company Surgical Bliss, places SA at number 5 or 6. she has found that plastic surgery plays a major role in the ranking. Other top destinations include Thailand, Singapore, India, Brazil and Malaysia.

Due to the recession, however, there has been an overall decrease in the number of medical tourists since 2009.

While clients come from across the world, many people from the UK are opting now to have surgery in neighbouring Eastern European countries, as South Africa is considered a long-haul flight, says Hoogervorst.

She has noted that people from other parts of Africa are becoming big role players in SA’s international cosmetic surgery scene.

Hoogervorst says clients choose Cape Town because of its world-class surgeons. she explains that clients vary, so packages are tailor-made to suit their needs and budgets.

“the priority is always the surgery and after that, the tourism. some just want to rest and not run around sightseeing at all,” says Hoogervorst. she says some come alone and need care during their stay, while others come with family members.

And it’s not only women who are queuing for surgery. Reddy says at her practice alone the number of male clients have increased by 20 percent.

The most common procedure they elect is botox. she explains that botox is a quick, non-invasive procedure with virtually no recovery time needed.

“Men, especially those in the corporate environment, work longer. Many feel threatened because they’re up against younger, fresh-faced men straight out of college,” says Reddy.

Esther Lewis has an alternative non-invasive laser treatment done to her abdominal area by Dr Liezl Voshol-Botha.

INDEPENDENT NEWSPAPERS

This is part of the reason they opt for botox. Scores of men do it so that their face reflect their lifestyle: healthy and active.

Reddy says that in recent years, the deluge of reality shows around plastic surgery has got people talking, and more accepting of it.

However, a uniquely SA trait is that while people are more open to it, they are still secretive about admitting that they had procedures done.

“Vanity and guilt plays a big role in people being secretive about it,” says Reddy.

Reddy, 39, is a mother of two. she says she would definitely consider going under the knife for breast augmentation or a lift if she ever became unhappy with her body.

But for now, she has her regular fill of botox treatments.

“These are fairly safe procedures. as a doctor, when my patients ask, I can be empathetic and tell my patients, ‘been there, done that’,” she says.

* Don’t take chances with surgery – use only qualified professionals

Health Professions Council of SA CEO and Registrar Dr Buyiswa Mjamba-Matshoba, has urged people to ensure they use practitioners who have the necessary skills, knowledge and experience to carry out certain procedures.

Mjamba-Matshoba says general practitioners can perform certain cosmetic and reconstructive surgery, provided they are able to show they are adequately trained and qualified.

Mjamba-Matshoba says the organisation has received a number of complaints regarding botched liposuction procedures. some patients have even died as a result of complications.

In 2004, Dr Jan van Almenkerk was found guilty of culpable homicide by the Pretoria Regional Court after his patient died in 2001 of liposuction complications.

Van Almenkerk was sentenced to a fine of R240 000 or six years in jail. Half of this sentence was suspended for three years.

In 2007, the HPCSA charged him with disgraceful, unprofessional conduct. Mjamba-Matshoba says he was suspended from practice for a period of three years of which the first was not suspended, the second and third year are suspended for another four years on expiration of the first year on the following conditions: that he is not found guilty of unprofessional conduct similar in nature, and that he does not perform any liposuction procedures.

“the HPCSA advises that the public only consults practitioners who have the necessary skills, knowledge and experience to carry out such a procedure and that the procedure takes place in a registered theatre,” says Mjamba-Matshoba.

Mjamba-Matshoba added that the council is concerned about the general increase in offerings by beauty salons to perform botox and teeth whitening procedures. These procedures, by law, should by law only be performed by a trained healthcare professional registered with the HPCSA.

The HPCSA has an online register which the public can access to check a practitioner’s registration and qualifications. Alternatively they can call the HPCSA Client Centre on 012 338 9301.

* Famous faces that have had a little upkeep

some well-known South Africans admit to having work done. Among them are:

* Western Cape premier Helen Zille admitted in 2008 that she had been using botox treatments since 2005. A friend had suggested it, and once Zille tried it, she found the procedure was worth it. while she has been the butt of many jokes since the admission, Zille often laughs off the jabs.

* Socialite Khanyi Mbau has had non-surgical rhinoplasty, which involves tissue fillers to shape the nose, laser lipo, and two breast augmentations. Mbau has also had her teeth filed, gaps closed, and her gums pushed back. she described the gum procedure as very painful.

* Kwaito star Nomasonto “Mshoza” Mnisi reportedly bleaches her skin. she has had a nose job, breast augmentation, and a tummy tuck. Earlier this year she planned to have a second breast lift, more skin lightening, and calf implants. she announced in May that she wasn’t ready to go under the knife again.

* It’s not only women changing their appearances. Funnyman Leon Schuster – who until recently was steadily balding – has had hair implants, which give him a fuller head of hair and a more youthful appearance. he follows in the footsteps of cricketer Jacques Kallis and television presenter Derek Watts.

* Setting lasers to stun – losing ‘jelly belly’ in a few minutes – by Esther Lewis

When I was first approached about trying non-invasive laser treatment, I was duly sceptical. how could the treatment effectively zap away fat, and have you shed centimetres almost instantly?

I visited the Tygerberg Multicare Centre to try the procedure for myself. I had nothing to lose, but my love handles.

I filled out my medical history and Dr Liezl Voshol-Botha, a homeopathic practitioner and managing director of the clinic, explained the iLipo procedure.

Approved by the Food and Drug Administration in the US, the lasers simulate a natural biochemical change in the fat cell, breaking down triglycerides into free fatty acids and glycerol molecules. These smaller molecules escape through the cell wall and are transported to the lymphatic system to be used as energy during exercise.

Simply put, the fat cells are like “grapes”. the low level lasers would melt the fat inside the cell. once this happens, the actual cell is emptied out within 10 minutes of exposure.

The centimetre reduction is caused as a result of the “grape-like” cell being emptied and reduced to a “raisin”. there is no damage to the fat cell.

Voshol-Botha explains it is important to exercise within 24 hours so that the energy could be used. Unlike liposuction – which removes the entire fat cell – the emptied cell is still present, and can fill up with fat again if it is not burned off with exercise.

Clients would have a session twice a week for four weeks. the procedure can be done on all parts of the body, except for women’s breasts due to the glands. the most popular area is the abdomen, says Voshol-Botha.

The loss of centimetres could vary between 2-5cm per session. Factors influencing reduction includes the body’s metabolism.

During and after the process, it is important to exercise and maintain a good eating plan.

But surely with any eating plan and exercise, one could achieve the same results?

Voshol-Botha says centimetre reduction would not happen as quickly, and it would be an overall reduction, instead of in targeted areas.

She takes measurements of my belly at three points, from the base up – 84cm, 88cm and 92cm.

Once my measurements are taken, it’s time to start the procedure. three lasers are placed on my abdomen for 10 minutes a side. for the 20 minutes the lasers are at work, there is no physical sensation that tell me whether or not it’s being effective.

Once the lasering is complete, Voshol-Botha applies gel to my belly and uses the iLipo Ultra machine. the device sucks up the skin –like a vacuum massage – and squeezes out whatever fat is left in the cell. the process helps with cellulite reduction, skin firming and collagen production.

After about 40 minutes, it’s the moment of truth. Did it work or not?

We take measurements. At 84cm, I’ve lost 4cm. At 88cm, I’ve shed 5cm. At the top marking at 92cm, I’ve lost 1cm.

Now for the hard part: burning about 300 calories to ensure the released fat doesn’t go back to where it came from. – Cape Argus

Vampire Facelifts Are All The Rage in Plastic Surgery

NEW YORK (MainStreet) — A new study shows that, increasingly, Americans are choosing “Mommy Makeovers” and “Vampire Facelifts” as plastic surgery  options these days. Why those options, and what are plastic surgery consumers avoiding?

U.S. consumers want to have some plastic surgery done – but more and more, they can’t afford to. Data from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery says that the average cost of a common “tummy tuck” was $5,332 in 2010. It’s not exactly a shock to find that most health care plans don’t cover such treatments.

Maybe that’s why the plastic surgery industry is getting more creative with service options for reluctant – at least from a financial sense – consumers. Case in point? A new study from RealSelf.com shows what consumers will pay for when it comes to plastic surgery.

The Seattle-based plastic surgery web site culled its data from millions of searches on its own web site, and from interaction from RealSelf community members who have undergone a plastic surgery procedure.

So what’s hot with plastic surgery consumers? Here’s a snapshot from RealSelf:

The “Mommy Makeover” – Women, who are more likely to undergo plastic surgery (by a 28% to 18% margin over men, according to a study by CouponCabin.com) apparently love their “Mommy Makeovers”. The procedure involves a combination of breast implants, tummy tucks and liposuction, among other services. Women surveyed by RealLife.com say the makeover boosts both their self-confidence and their sex life.

The “Vampire Facelift” – in its survey, RealSelf cites comments from Hollywood plastic surgeon Dr. Paul Nassif on what’s hot in La-La Land. He points to “Vampire Facelifts”, a facial treatment that uses the patient’s own blood plasma, as being “hot” right now. What’s not? “Duck Lips” and other “overdone” procedures, he says.

Fat Reduction – RealSelf says fat reduction is a big favorite among plastic surgery consumers these days. . Specifically, consumers are turning to laser-cellulite removal and “cool sculpting”, “ a new non-surgical way to reduce fat through precisely controlled cooling”, the company says. That procedure has seen an upward hike of 36% in searches over the past year, RealSelf says. The survey also says that “butt enhancement”, especially the “popular” Brazilian Butt Lift, are in so far in 2012, generating 520,000 searches in the first quarter of 2012 on RealLife.com. Florida is ground zero for butt lifts, while the U.S. Midwest has seen the highest demand for breast augmentation.

With the economy in peril, consumers aren’t exactly flocking to plastic surgeons in 2012. But when they do show up for some chiseling, lifting and sculpting, they’re going all in for treatments that have historically high demand (fat reduction) and offbeat procedures they can presumably brag to their friends about (the “vampire facelift”).

In that regard, at least, plastic really still is fantastic to consumers.

Hip Hop Has Glorified Womanly Figures – Implants and Surgeries

Since the birth of the music video women have been at the epicenter of sexiness, parading around, dancing, giving the camera the flirtatious passion that causes men to fantasize all the while making money for being someone’s idea of perfection. well physical perfection at the very least. there is always talk about society’s pressure cooking ideals of acceptable fashions of body type and A-list qualities and because of that the plastic surgery industry had become one of the most lucrative in the nation. Maybe it’s because people feel that at the very least they can control how they look. but, hip hop has always glorified thick, voluptuous women to the extent that now video vixens are buying implants to stay relevant.

The subject is rarely ever spoken about as plastic surgery is seen as something women of the hip hop world don’t need because their features come naturally. Or at least they used to. It’s safe to say that depending on what culture you come from you can expect to have certain features. a big booty and full bust are traits that rap artists covet and if you add a small waist and a pretty (or at least decent) face you’re a cash cow. Women get paid thousands per video just to stand there and be sexy.

But when does wanting to be a sex symbol go too far? If the hip hop culture likes ‘naturally’ thick women why is Angel Lola Luv so praised? Can I say with all absolution that the woman’s behind is falsified? No, I wasn’t there when she had the procedure. however, if you check out pictures of her when she wasn’t hugely sought after and compare her then booty to her now booty you’ll see exactly what I mean. In her 2007 XXL photo shoot you can clearly see her behind looking lumpy and saggy when she leans backwards against a wall and then it looking perfect when she stand straight up

I’m no hater and in fact I can appreciate a beautiful figure. but her body is what a size two and she toting size twelve booty around? It looks unnatural. The moral of the story is that the hip hop culture needs to hold its divas to the same forthright standard it used too No booty, no hips, no video

Reasons Why People Get Plastic Surgery

The number of plastic surgery procedures performed in the U.S. continues to rise each year. From breast lifts and augmentations to tummy tucks and liposuction, more and more men and women are turning to plastic surgeons for help with their physical appearance. But why? There are several factors that contribute to a person’s decision to get plastic surgery. following are some of the top reasons why the plastic surgery industry continues to grow in popularity among Americans:

Enhances Physical Appearance

One of the main reasons people decide to get plastic surgery is to enhance their physical appearance. every person has that one body part that they grow up feeling insecure about. for some it may be an oversized nose and for others it may be disproportionate breast size or shape. whatever it may be, it will nag at them, pull at them, and make them feel insecure, embarrassed and in some cases ashamed. however, with the advances in today’s plastic surgery industry, people can, and do, turn to their plastic surgeons for help with their insecurities and problem areas.

Restores a Youthful Appearance

As we get older our bodies begin to change. Our faces begin to sag, droop and wrinkle, our hands become leathery from years of sun exposure and our skin, overall, loosens and starts to sag. Plastic surgery is a growing defense against signs of aging as more and more people turn to their plastic surgeons to restore their youthful appearance. There are several types of cosmetic procedures designed specifically to fight the signs of aging; from non-surgical procedures such as Botox (R) and Thermage to surgical procedures including eyebrow lifts and facelifts.

Boosts Self Esteem, Enhances Quality of Life

The way people feel about themselves has a lot to do with their own self image. for some people plastic surgery is a blessing and can give them the confidence they need to truly enjoy life. Someone who is not confident or is embarrassed by their appearance may shy away from certain social events and miss out on important life experiences. Studies have shown that most people, both men and women, experience a drastic boost in their self esteem and an enhanced quality of life immediately following recovery from cosmetic procedures.

Restores Pre-Baby Figure

Each year more and more women are getting plastic surgery to restore their pre-baby figures. Although giving birth is one of nature’s most beautiful gifts, it does take its toll on the female body. in an effort to restore their self esteem and confidence, more and more women are undergoing cosmetic procedures, including tummy tucks and breast lifts. in fact, most plastic surgeons offer what they call Mommy Makeovers which include a series of cosmetic procedures designed to give mothers their bodies and confidence back.

Reconstructive Surgery

Reconstructive surgery is designed to surgically repair physical deformities caused by traumatic injuries such as burn injuries or dog bites, birth defects such as cleft lips or palates and physical abnormalities caused by medical conditions such as breast cancer.

Reasons Why People Get Plastic Surgery

Is It Acceptable For Young Girls To Get Breast Augmentation Surgery?

Whether you’re fifteen or eighty, whether you’re a man or a woman, assuredly there is at least one type of plastic surgery that you’ve considered getting at one point in your life. both sexes desire bodily perfection (or at least something close to it). thanks to advances in modern medicine and surgical procedures, just about everyone can afford to have their body sculpted in the manner in which they choose; shave a little here, add a little volume there – it’s all possible, all it takes is a little cash and a skilled plastic surgeon.

In today’s society, everyone wants to be perfect. you can even include me in that category. Who doesn’t want to be beautiful and highly regarded amongst one’s peers? To that end, the plastic surgery industry thrives on society’s infatuation with physical beauty. unfortunately, that societal pressure for physical beauty affects even young girls.

Most people don’t realize it, but there are no hard and fast regulations when it comes to age restrictions and plastic surgery. A sixteen year old girl can purchase implants just as easily as a thirty year old woman. Although that may not sound like there should be any cause for concern, the sixteen year old girl’s body is not fully developed while the thirty year old woman’s body is fully developed.

While exterior beauty can certainly benefit a person’s self esteem and self confidence, a person’s true self worth comes from within. if you were to ask a dozen men whether they feel a particular woman is attractive, you will more or less get the same response from all of them. While that knowledge might boost a woman’s self confidence, it pales in comparison to how she feels about herself. Elevating her self-esteem and self-confidence to its highest potential requires her to believe in herself. The ultimate goal of a plastic surgery procedure is not only about sculpting the body into a more pleasing form; it’s really about helping a person boost their own level of self-confidence.

Women start to visibly age in their early thirties. Once that process starts, most women start giving serious consideration to one form of plastic surgery or another. for men, aging is a much more gradual process, and the effects of it on a man are much more socially acceptable than they are for a woman. The bulk of plastic surgery patients are women in their thirties and forties, and that’s not going to change any time soon.

The woman in her thirties or forties who gets plastic surgery is seeking to restore youth to her body. The young woman in her early to mid twenties is typically seeking a properly balanced body. both women are trying to elevate their self esteem and there’s nothing wrong with that. however, when a young girl wants breast augmentation surgery, such as a sixteen year old girl, some people argue that is simply too young.

Both boys and girls in their early teenage years are unhappy with their bodies. It’s not until they are eighteen years old that they start to feel exceedingly pleased with the development of their body. and for women, their breasts continue to develop into their early twenties. That fact makes it seem even less necessary for a young girl to get breast implants because how can she know how she truly feels about her body when it’s still undeveloped?

The recommended minimum age for a breast augmentation patient is eighteen years old, and that is only a recommendation; if her parents approve of the surgery, even a fifteen year old could get breast implants in this writer’s opinion, that is simply too young. Women should wait until their bodies are fully developed before having cosmetic enhancement surgery of any kind.

Breast augmentation surgery is easily the most performed invasive cosmetic surgery in the world. It’s obvious that all women want beauty, but at what point does the health risk outweigh the potential aesthetic reward?

To learn more about plastic surgery age restrictions, you will need to speak directly with a licensed plastic surgeon. only a licensed doctor can provide you with medical guidance and counsel regarding your health related decisions. good luck

Top Seven Countries in Plastic Surgery

Statistics Suggest Growing International Interest

The United States sees the among the most procedures performed throughout the world, but in terms of population percentage that goes under the knife, it doesn’t even crack the top three. New statistics released by the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery rate the top seven countries for their plastic surgeries per person, and the results reveal some interesting trends.

The seven countries, and their most popular surgeries, are as follows:

1. South KoreaLiposuction, rhinoplasty, and blepharoplasty

2. GreeceBreast Augmentation

3. ItalyBotulinum Toxin Type a (Botox Dysport) and Liposuction

4. Brazil - Breast Implants and Liposuction

5. Columbia - Liposuction

6. USA - Liposuction, Breast Augmentation

7. Taiwan - Botox and other wrinkle treatments

These numbers are very intriguing to the plastic surgery industry. The biggest surprise is how far up Greece is on the list, while Brazil is lower on the list than expected. Greece, a country in the midst of an economic downfall, spent a surprising amount of money on elective surgeries.

“a country’s economy and the access to disposable income usually plays a big part in the demand of plastic surgery unless the government pays for it,” says Dr. Malcolm Roth, president of the American Society for Plastic Surgeons.

Meanwhile, Brazil, a country whose government offers a number of tax deductions found it’s way lower on the list, to the surprise of the industry.

“Culturally speaking, Brazilians have no problem with plastic surgery,” says Roth. “If anything, it’s seen as a status symbol to have had it.”

But the winner for most surgeries per capita is South Korea. Trend Monitor estimates as many as one in five women have undergone some sort of procedure in Seoul. one of the top procedures is blepharoplasty, or double eyelid surgery. over 44,000 such surgeries were performed in 2010.

“In Asia, it’s very common for patients to want more Western-looking eyes,” says Roth. “so that’s really no surprise there.”

These results and more are beginning to shed light on the effect globalization is having on the industry. more and more people in nations across the world are coming to accept plastic surgery.

“because people are beginning to talk openly about it, we’ve seen over the last couple decades the demand for plastic surgery grow,” says Roth. “People are realizing that it’s more common than most people think and there doesn’t have to be a stigma around it.”

Top Seven Countries in Plastic Surgery

Nip/Tuck Nations: 7 Countries With Most Cosmetic Surgery

“Greece is a head scratcher,” said Roth.

With a floundering economy, Roth said it is surprising that the country came in second in overall procedures performed.

“A country’s economy and the access to disposable income usually plays a big part in the demand of plastic surgery unless the government pays for it,” said Roth.

But Few said it just goes to show that globalization is affecting the plastic surgery industry in unexpected places.

“There is little room to sit still when we consider innovation, domestic or international,” said Few.

Breast augmentations took the top spot among invasive surgeries in Greece. of note, a reported 592 penis enlargement procedures were performed in 2010, ten times more than the average of other countries that made the list.

The Mediterranean boot came in third with a total of 815,745 procedures performed in 2010. Botulinum Toxin Type a (Botox Dysport) was the most popular procedure performed overall and liposuction was the most common invasive procedure with more than 69,000 reported.

Experts were surprised by Italy’s placement over Brazil, and warned that the data should be taken with caution.

The International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons issued questionnaires to about 20,000 plastic surgeons throughout the world, requesting the number of surgical and non-surgical procedures they performed in 2010. only 698 came back completed in the allotted time.

“I think clearly we have to take caution with this data, since we don’t know how accurate it is,” said Roth.

Brazil: Home to all people, places and things of hotness. Brazil took up fourth place in the list, and liposuction and breast implants were the most popular invasive surgeries among the population.

“Culturally speaking, Brazilians have no problem with plastic surgery,” said Roth. “If anything, it’s seen as a status symbol to have had it.”

Few said he was surprised Brazil didn’t make it higher on the list, especially because the country has “a number of government-based tax-deduction systems in place to support elective plastic surgery.”

Earlier this year, the government made cosmetic surgeries deductible from income tax, and the discounts are backdated for surgeries as early as 2004. the government believes cosmetic surgery is in such high demand that the additional income to those in the industry will outweigh the money lost to deductions.

Coming in at a close second to its neighbor and fifth overall, Shakira’s home country has a high demand for going under the knife. Liposuction was the most popular procedure, both among surgical and non-surgical procedures, with nearly 90,000 reportedly performed in 2010.

Colombia has become a hot spot for cosmetic tourism, where foreigners travel there to get a nip here and a tuck there.

While there are certainly an abundance of safe options in the countries listed, Roth said it’s important to remember the trusty adage: “If it’s too good to be true, it probably is.”

Cosmetic tourism has become more popular along with higher demand, but Roth warned against going abroad to undergo surgery.

“People go other places because it’s cheap, but you really have to do your homework, even more, if you decide to go abroad to get plastic surgery,” said Roth. “There are absolutely safe procedures being done in other countries, but you have to be very careful. if something goes wrong, a lot of things can go worse when you’re not in your own country with your own doctor.”

The report showed more than 3.3 million reported invasive and non-invasive surgical procedures performed in 2010, but the ASPS reported more than 13 million total procedures performed in the same year. Demand continues to rise as the country slowly makes its way out of economic hardship.

Liposuction showed to be the most in-demand procedure, with breast augmentations coming in a close second.

“Because people are beginning to talk openly about it, we’ve seen over the last couple decades the demand for plastic surgery grow,” said Roth. “People are realizing that it’s more common than most people think and there doesn’t have to be a stigma around it.”

Taiwan rounded out the top 7 List with a total of 221,116 total procedures performed in 2010. Wrinkle reducers like Botox were the most popular among all surgeries performed.

Not only does economy likely play into the Taiwan’s demand for surgery, but trends play a heavy role in the nip/tuck game as well, said Dr. Garry Brody, professor of plastic surgery at USC Medical Center.

“It is more likely how in any given society the local fashion develops in different ways,” said Brody.

More women getting breast enhancements

More women are getting bigger bust lines and that could mean they have bigger wads of disposable cash.

The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery just released their 2011 study that showed body boosting procedures are on the rise. in fact, the plastic surgery industry has crossed the $10 billion dollar per year threshold in the United States.

Arizona-based plastic surgeons are echoing this sentiment, saying that they are seeing a spike in patients requesting body augmenting procedures like breast implants, chin implants, lip implants and even rear-end implants now that the economy and job stabilization has improved.

Cosmetic surgical procedures increased almost 1 percent in the past year, with over 1.6 million procedures in 2011. Surgical procedures accounted for 18 percent of the total numbers of procedures performed and represented 63 percent of total expenditures.

In the ASAPS’ 15th annual multi-specialty procedural statistics report, the overall number of cosmetic procedures has increased 197 percent since the tracking of the statistics first began in 1997. Almost 9.2 million cosmetic surgical and nonsurgical procedures were performed in the United States in 2011.

“Even during the worst parts of the economic downturn people were still having plastic surgery procedures performed,” said Dr. Daniel Shapiro of Shapiro Plastic Surgery in Scottsdale. “Many patients that had procedures performed during that time period attributed their decision to look younger to stay competitive in the job market.”

According to the report, more men had plastic surgery in 2011 than ever before.

“At my practice, we saw at least a 20 percent increase in men having both surgical and non-surgical procedures,” said Shapiro. “Men are definitely conscious of their appearance and are willing to spend just as much as women to reverse the signs of aging.”

China Plastic Surgery Industry is Booming – Laowaiblog

Plastic Surgery in China is a booming industry; Procedures are especially popular among China’s middle class, which now has more disposable income than ever before

The unbelievable speed in which Chinese society has been changing — from bicycles to cars, villages to cities, housebound holidays to ski vacations — now reaches the plastic surgery industry in China, which generated an estimated $2.3 billion U.S in revenue in 2010. Ma Xiaowei, China’s vice health minister, said that in just a decade, cosmetic and plastic surgery has become the fourth most popular way to spend discretionary income in China after houses, cars and travel.

Stay Updated with the latest China opinion and views on the Laowaiblog Facebook Page

What might seem weird to the average Westerner is the type of surgeries that appeal to the Chinese masses: The most sought after operation is for the eyes; The procedure is designed to make the eyes appear larger by adding a crease in the eyelid, forming what is called a double eyelid. Many Chinese people feel that having larger and rounder eyes is more beautiful — and more Western. The second most popular operation raises the bridge of the nose to make it more prominent — the opposite of the typical nose job in the West. The third most popular procedure is the reshaping of the jaw to make it narrower and longer.

Surprisingly enough, many of the patients are very young. at Evercare clinics, a chain of cosmetic-surgery hospitals in China, two-fifths of patients are in their 20s, said Li Bin, the general manager and one of the founders to the new York Times. The youthful patients include job applicants hoping to enhance their prospects in the work force, teenagers who received cosmetic surgery as a high school graduation present and even middle school students, most of whom want eye jobs, surgeons say.

Despite lack of official figures, the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery estimated in 2009 that China ranked third in the number of annual operations, behind the United States and Brazil, with more than two million plastic surgery operations annually. and the number of operations is doubling every year. mr. Ma, China’s vice health minister, says that China’s regulatory system, by all accounts, has not kept pace with the growing demand for plastic surgery. Out of 11 clinics and hospitals offering cosmetic or plastic surgery that were inspected late last year, he said, fewer than half met national standards. Employees lacked professional credentials; equipment and materials were subpar, and many beauty parlors are flagrant violators, illegally administering Botox injections and performing eyelid surgery.

Mr. Ma defined the situation as a medical “disaster zone,” with many accidents often go unreported or unheard by the public. he mentioned the case of a 24 year old former contestant in the Chinese reality show “Super Girl”, who died after her windpipe filled with blood during an operation to reshape her jaw in Hubei Province.

Despite growing concerns and lack of supervision, the phenomenon of Plastic Surgery in China continues to spread, as many of the middle class in China can now afford to pay the $1500-3000 U.S to change how they look. The only question needed to be asked is: Why would they want to do that?
