All the sun and the fun, it takes its toll. After a time, you start to look like a Gundt bear, all loveable and wrinkly.

Either that, or jowly like Joe Clark.

So today, I ventured into the mystical and magical world of cosmetic surgery to see I could freshen myself up a bit.

 I started with a visit to Dr. Greg Antoniak’s Facial Surgery and Cosmetic Centre in Ottawa.  Dr. Antoniak was rated as one of the top ten cosmetic surgeons in Canada by Flare magazine.

My consult began with a VISIA complexion analysis which measured the number of spots and wrinkles, the texture of my skin, my pores and the dreaded UV damage I have encountered over my 54 years on this planet (including a decade worth of summer tennis).

Here’s the good news. Because of my lineage, I have small pores and good skin texture; I’m not even bad in the skin spots department. The bad news was that I have become a wrinkly old granny rating 36 percent, meaning that an average of 64 percent of women are less wrinkly than me.

I was average in terms of sun damage, for which I am grateful given the number of days I’ve frolicked in the sunlight without sunscreen.

It’s good to know.

Dr. Antoniak’s staff recommended Botox for the treatment of lines and wrinkles.

I went for it.

The injections were simple and took barely half an hour. I was surprised; the injections to soothe my furrowed brow didn’t hurt at all. there was a little discomfort around my temple, not more than the sting of mosquito bite.

Not a problem, I would say.

I can’t tell you about the result because it takes a week or so to see Botox in action. But I can tell you for sure — this isn’t your mother’s plastic surgery.

We don’t have to look like Granny Clampett in our mid-50s. we don’t have to go under the knife, either.

It’s so good to know that we have options in this day and age.
