Summer often means lots of outdoors fun on area lakes for Austinites. But for others folks, these hot “dog days of summer” can mean something completely different as dog bite incidents tend to increase during summer months.
Dr. Adam Weinfeld is a plastic surgeon who sees more dog bites during the summer.
“It’s not suprising at all — we certainly notice an increasing number of consults in the emergency room, children that have been injured in dog bites,” he said.
Weinfeld added that children are often more likely than adults to become victims of bites often because they’re exposed to them more.
“They’re outside more often certainly because they’re not in school during the summer so they have more unsupervised time alongside of dogs,” Weinfeld said.
A nonprofit organization called “Prevent a Bite” said children are three times more likely than adults to get bit. Add that with The American Society of Plastic Surgeons reporting 29,000 reconstructive surgeries last year due to dog bites nationwide.
It is a statistic that attorney Len Gabbey sees play out regularly during the summer.
“Infants and toddlers are more at risk,” Gabbey said. “They are at an eye level that is more akin to a dog’s eye level, which can be seen as threatening to a dog. when you have kids over at friends’ homes, for example, sleepovers during the summertime with their friends or barbecues, when you’re just not doing that except in the summertime.”
Healthcare professionals said if you have a dog keep it on a leash. If you’re out somewhere and the dogs are running around loose, watch your distance from the animal. You don’t want to fall victim to another dog bite.

SAO PAULO (AP) – Doctors are performing free reconstructive surgeries on people who have been scalped in freak boating accidents in Brazil's Amazon region.
The vice president of the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgeons tells the government's Agencia Brasil news service that some 40 volunteer doctors started operating on 60 men, women and children on Friday in Amapa state. Another 120 are awaiting surgery.
Luciano Ornelas Chaves says the accidents occur on small boats used for transport that have engines located in the middle of the vessel.
He says that “When people bend down near the engine to scoop water out of the boat, their hair gets caught in the motor. That's when they lose their scalps and sometimes their ears and other parts of their faces.”
Calls to the society went unanswered Friday.

BALTIMORE (Reuters) – Surgeons from the University of Maryland Medical Center on Tuesday detailed what they said was the world’s most comprehensive face transplant – allowing a 37-year-old man to emerge from behind a mask 15 years after a gun accident almost killed him.
Richard Norris of Hillsville, Virginia, was shot in the face in 1997 and lost his nose, lips and most movement in his mouth. since then, he has had multiple life-saving and reconstructive surgeries but none could repair him to the extent where he felt he could return to society. He wore a prosthetic nose and a mask even when entering hospital for the transplant.
But last week, during a 36-hour operation, University of Maryland doctors gave him a new face from an anonymous donor whose organs saved five other patients’ lives on the same day.
Six days after the surgery, he could already move his tongue and open and close his eyes and was recovering much faster than doctors expected.
“He’s actually looking in the mirror shaving and brushing his teeth, which we never even expected,” said Dr. Eduardo Rodriguez, associate professor of surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and head of the transplant team, who spoke at a press conference.
When Norris opened his eyes on the third day after the surgery with his family around him, he wanted to see a mirror.
“He put the mirror down and thanked me and hugged me,” Rodriguez said.
The operation follows successful face transplants in forth Worth, Texas, and Boston, Massachusetts, last year and it seems to be the most aesthetically successful to date, according to photographs and video shared with reporters at a news conference.
Norris, who is still recovering in the hospital and did not appear at the media event, is the first full face transplant recipient in the United States to retain his eyesight.
“We concealed all the lines so it would give him the most immediate best appearance with minimal touch-ups down the road,” Rodriguez said later in an interview.
To ensure Norris would retain maximum function of his facial expressions and movements, doctors gave him a new tongue for proper speech, eating, and chewing, normally aligned teeth, and connected his nerves to allow for smiling.
Before the surgery, Norris, who is unmarried and lives with his parents in a rural area, was been unable to find a job because of his appearance, a hospital spokeswoman said.
The transplant was “an amazing feat,” said the dean of the School of Medicine, Dr. E. Albert Reece at the press conference.
“It’s also an unprecedented and historic procedure that we believe will change, if you will, the face of medicine now and in the future,” Reece said.
About 100 doctors, scientists and other university medical staff ranging from plastic surgeons to craniofacial specialists teamed up for the operation.
The surgery involved 10 years of research funded by the Department of Defense’s Office of Naval Research and will serve as a model for helping war veterans injured by improvised explosive devices in Afghanistan, the university said.
Rodriguez saluted the work of the teams around the world that had conducted the 22 face transplants to date, without which, he said, this operation would not have been possible.

The very first descriptions of skin grafts date back to India circa 800 B.C., where they served to obstruct the facial hole resulting from nose amputations. during the Renaissance, Ambroise Par developed the art of suture, leaving records in which he describes both the instruments and the technique employed. In the 19th century, new methods for operating were developed, ending earlier rudimentary and painful procedures. however, at that time the Catholic Church was strongly opposed to the advancement of science in general, and specifically opposed remodeling the human form. but in the 20th century, when Europe was confronted with the seriously mutilated faces of soldiers returning from the fronts of WWI, the imperative to repair them grew, and plastic surgery finally gained a respectable place in the medical profession.
Then World War II came and once again, plastic surgeons used their skills to help their countrymen. This led to more plastic surgery advances. Then by the 1950s, plastic surgery was fully integrated into the medical community. In the 1960s, the concept of plastic surgery grew in the consciousness of the American public as more physicians performed plastic surgery procedures. Plus in this decade, silicone started being used in plastic surgery and started becoming a part of our culture. now in the 1970s, the plastic surgeon became one of the leading medical professions. and in the 1980s, plastic surgery was expanding all over the country. by the 1990s, there thousands of board-certified plastic surgeons and the numbers continue to grow, even today. now there are thousands of plastic surgeons, offering a variety of plastic surgery procedures to patients not just in the United States, but all over the world.

DENVER — It’s been two weeks since KUSA morning anchor Kyle Dyer was injured by a dog on live television.since then the dog has been returned to his owner and the Denver station has changed their policies.for two weeks, Kyle wasn’t physically able to talk after her series of reconstructive surgeries, but she can now."I’m doing good," she told her fellow anchor Gary Shapiro. "Not talking was so difficult for me, but I’ve become a very fast writer."Kyle was interviewing Max, an 85-pound Argentine Mastiff, his owner Michael Robinson, and a firefighter, who rescued Max from an icy pond the day before when Max bit Kyle in the face, significantly damaging her face and lip."I didn’t realize the extent of the injury. I knew it was bad when my lips didn’t touch anymore," she said."I put my hand like this," Kyle said touching her face. "I realized all the blood – the top part of my lip here was gone.""First thing I think is, ‘I’m bleeding and it had to be live on TV.’ Then I thought, ‘I got to call my mom before one of her bridge friends calls her,’" she said.after four hours of surgery at Denver Health Medical Center, 70 stitches and a skin graft, Kyle started her recovery.Kyle says she didn’t realize the extent of the injury for two days."I was so out of it. You and the viewers knew what was going on with me before I knew. It’s just driving me crazy," she said. "The problem was the lip. I didn’t have one. Plastic surgery also puts a face back together and that’s what I needed."Kyle had her second surgery on Monday. She was given 20 new stitches and had the 70 stitches that were initially put in on February 8th removed."I’m so lucky, and it could have been worse. It was bad, but just think if it was my cheek or my nose or my eye or throat," she said. "I’m fortunate. I’m going to be fine."since the accident, Kyle has received hundreds of cards, letters, emails and social media well wishes.She says she’s overwhelmed.The messages have come from students in class, her friends, people she’s met and people she doesn’t know."To write me these notes – so personal. look, I’m starting to cry. To write such words of encouragement. they just know me from TV. They’re just so wonderful Gary. People are just so kind, loving, pick you up when you’re down and I will be forever grateful," Kyle said. "I can’t believe people took the time to go to the store, pick up a card and write me."Not all the message were positive.Kyle knows many people were upset about what happened to Max.Max was put into quarantine by Denver Animal Control after the bite.this is standard procedure to make sure the dog is not infected by rabies or a history of biting.after completing 10 days in mandatory quarantine, Max went home on Saturday."I’m glad the dog’s back home with his family. I never wanted anything but. You know, it was an accident. And it just kind of all snowballed. And then all that followed. I’m doing better. The dog’s back with its family, it’s time to move on,’ Kyle said. "I have never blamed Max. I’m glad to be home too and want to move on and to heal."That is what Kyle is doing.She is moving on and believes this story will have a happy ending."I don’t know. everybody was like, ‘Weren’t you freaking out?’ And I’m like, no cause I just had a feeling, and I still do, that everything is going to be OK," she said. "I just put it in God’s hands and I know He’s taking care of me. And my family is so grateful that everything is going as well as it is."The injury to Kyle’s face may never completely heal."It may be six months, or never, to get feeling back," she said. "I just wake up every day, take my meds, put on lotion and sunscreen, have to for all this new skin, talk with my family and pray."we don’t know when Kyle will be back on the air.She’ll spend a couple of months making her lip better and then come back stronger than ever."Right now, this is all I can do – a half smile. I’ll smile again, maybe just a different smile," she said.
