Bullying is a major issue that schools and institutions find hard to solve. Kids who have fallen victims to bullies find ways to get away from the name-calling and plastic surgery is one of the options that most of them consider. This attracts teens as young as 13 to go under the knife to dodge the taunts in the school yard.

In the United States, statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons indicate that there are about 219 000 procedures performed on teens in 2010. The age group is between 13 to 19 and the reasons are usually for improving their appearance to escape the bullies that attack them in their schools. Peer pressure and the desire to fit in with everyone else seem to be the driving factors.

Plastic surgery has long been associated with celebrities, but many people do get plastic surgery from breast augmentation to liposuction and now chin implants.

According to new statistics released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), chin implants increased 71 percent between 2010 and 2011, outdoing breast augmentation, liposuction and even Botox, which increased a mere five percent between 2010 and 2011.

Dr. Darrick Antell, a Manhattan plastic surgeon and clinical professor of surgery at Columbia University, said: “Having a strong chin is not something you can gain via diet or exercise. You’re either born with it or you see a surgeon to improve it.”

The ASPS also reports that chin implants is now popular with both men and women, with nearly 21,000 Americans opting for the operation last year alone

Dr. Antell also said: “The biggest jump was in people over 40 which is the point where people are bridging the gap between youthfulness and middle age. They’re getting loose skin under the jaw line and a chin implant can make an immediate improvement.”

Another reason they assume for the rise is social media applications like Facebook and cameras in most devices like phones where everybody wants to look their best.

In regards to cameras and social media, Dr. Antell further added: “People have cameras everywhere. you can be at a wedding at the buffet table and a moment later see pictures of your double chin on Facebook. We’re a much more image-driven society than we were even five years ago.”

When Dr. Robert Heck began to notice wrinkles in his forehead five years ago, he thought of allthe patients he had treated with Botox. He decided it was his turn.

“I do Botox,” said Heck, 45, who works at Columbus Aesthetic and Plastic Surgery. “I tell all mypatients I am full of Botox.” Men are beginning to follow women into plastic-surgery offices.

 Cosmetic procedures among men increased by 16 percent from 2000 to 2011 nationally,according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, but still remain a small part of thepractice. About 9 percent of cosmetic procedures were performed annually on men between 2008 and2011, the society said.Heck said men, who make up 10 to 15 percent of his patients, often see theresults their wives and girlfriends get from cosmetic procedures and ask, “Hey, why not me?

”Dr. Anne Taylor, an associate professor of surgery with the Ohio State University Department ofPlastic Surgery, said she also sees many couples come into her office.

“I think that, as plastic surgery has gained acceptance throughout all society, this is just anatural progression,” Taylor said. About 30 percent of her patients are men.

One patient, Aaron, who did not want his last name published because he did not want people toknow he had undergone a procedure, had liposuction on his abdomen and back two years ago.

The 41-year-old Columbus resident said he and his wife went into a plastic surgeon’s officetogether to each get procedures.“Guys probably need a little push,” said Aaron, who works in sales.“I may not have gone if she hadn’t set up the appointment.”

Dr. Alan Levy, a Columbus psychiatrist, said men increasingly feel pressure to look their best.“As a society, we’re sort of pandering to men’s vanities and the importance that men maintain theirphysical attractiveness and their youthfulness in a way that used to be reserved just for women,”Levy said.

He said there is an increasing number of occasions when men feel that enhancing theirappearances can give them a competitive edge, such as in the business world where they compete witha younger market. others might be divorced or newly single men who want to improve their chances inthe dating world.

Heck said he has “no doubt” there’s more of a stigma for men who seek cosmetic procedures thanfor women. Men think they should have been able to get results on their own in the gym, hesaid.

Aaron has largely kept his liposuction a secret for that reason. “That way they don’t know thatI didn’t do it myself,” he said.The procedures do carry some risk, as does any surgery.Complications from cosmetic surgery can include blood clots, infection, scarring and nerve damage,according to the Mayo Clinic.

Aaron said the liposuction was worth the $7,000 he spent. “If you can get something fixed, whynot get it fixed?” he said.

Dr. Tim Treece, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon at Columbus Aesthetic and Plastic Surgery,said men only pretend not to care about their appearance.“But the bottom line is men do care,” hesaid. “They just don’t express it as much.”

Ukranian Woman Claims She’s A Real-Life Barbie

Meet 21-year-old Valeria Lukyanova, a Ukrainian model who says she is the real-life Barbie. Valeria has sparked an online debate over how the Mattel toy may really be pushing youth to have a warped sense of reality about beauty and what a healthy female should look like.

While Valeria claims on her blog that she’s the most famous woman on the Russian internet because of her doll-like appeal, the debate rages on about whether her image has been photoshopped or if she used plastic surgery to achieve her look, or even whether she’s a real woman at all:

Hundreds of photos on her Facebook page show a wide-eyed, nearly fake-looking Lukyanova posing in a variety of scanty outfits. But with nearly 8,000 subscribers to her Facebook page, it’s unclear whether Lukyanova exists at all, or whether it’s all a hoax thanks to the world of photo editing.

The model did not return requests for comment. if photoshop is not a factor in getting Lukyanova’s look, she likely underwent a barrage plastic surgery. Dr. Malcolm Roth, president of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, said plastic surgery should never be used to transform oneself into a favorite celebrity or, in this case, a play toy.

“We believe evaluating any and all issues that may affect our patients’ well-being, including psychological factors, is part of providing total patient care,” Roth said in a statement. “Additionally, Valeria is also only 21, so certain milestones in growth and physical maturity ought to be considered before plastic surgery is performed. ASPS cautions patients to keep in mind that plastic surgery is real surgery with real risks, just as with any operation, so the decision should not be taken lightly.”

Whether Lukyanova is real or fake, photoshopped or plastic surgery, Diane Levin, professor of education at Wheelock College in Boston, said the mystery of her existence is not the issue. the problem is that her flaunted image epitomizes and exemplifies the issue of objectification of women in today’s society.

“Barbie has always been controversial and really changed the discussion on how girls play,” said Levin, author of the book, “The Next Sexualized Childhood and how Parents can Protect Their Kids.” ”When Barbie came around, play suddenly became about dressing up and looking right and it eventually played a role in how women wanted to look in real life.”

While Lukyanova is an extreme example of societal expectations of perfect beauty, Levin said, “If society expects women to look like that, it is harder for almost any woman to totally resist it.

“This just feeds into our media screen culture, where being involved with real things are becoming more and more removed for children,” Levin said. “Even if she’s totally photoshopped, the fact that her body is being changed to one that no one actually can attain epitomizes what is happening in our society.”

Levin encouraged parents to have an open discussion with their children about sexualization and objectification in the media.

“Rather than just writing it off as someone or something that is ridiculous, allow your child to share your thoughts and have an open discussion about healthy self-image and expectations for themselves and others,” she said.

Remember when they told us that if Barbie was real she’d just topple over because her proportions are so out of whack? Yea, well, what now?
