Johnson & Johnson plans to stop selling surgical mesh implants used to treat women’s health problems, which have been linked to injuries and triggered hundreds of lawsuits.
The company sent a letter Monday to judges in new Jersey and West Virginia who are overseeing patient lawsuits against the company. J&J said it plans to phase out four mesh products over the next three to nine months.
The plastic mesh is used to strengthen the pelvic wall in cases of pelvic organ prolapse, in which the bladder or other reproductive organs slip down into the vagina. About 75,000 women had prolapse surgery with mesh inserted through the vagina last year. A similar procedure using an incision in the abdomen is less common.
J&J said the mesh products are safe and that it is not recalling them.
“Our decision to discontinue these products is based on their commercial viability in light of changing market dynamics, and is not related to safety or efficacy,” the new Brunswick company said in a statement.
But the Food and Drug Administration reported last year that the implants were associated with higher rates of pain, bleeding and infection than traditional surgery with stitches. The agency said 10 percent of women experienced erosion or exposure of the mesh within 12 months of having the mesh implanted. more than half of these women required follow-up surgery to remove the mesh. Some required two or three surgeries.
At the same time, the FDA said it saw no evidence that using mesh led to better outcomes than traditional surgery with stitches.
In January, the FDA ordered J&J and five other companies to conduct rigorous studies to track the complication rates with their products over time. J&J said in its letter it expects the FDA to waive that requirement once it phases out the products.
Consumer safety advocates hailed the announcement as a victory.
“These companies know they will never be able to prove safety and efficacy of these devices in the studies mandated by the FDA in January of this year,” said Lana Keeton, a Miami resident who has undergone 17 surgeries to remove mesh that was implanted in 2001. Keeton’s group, Truth in Medicine, has lobbied the FDA on the risks of mesh in recent years.
Mesh products initially were seen as a high-tech improvement over traditional surgery, which also can have complications. Since similar mesh was already used in other types of surgery, the products received fast-track approval from the FDA without the tests that the agency requires for first-of-a-kind devices.
In its last quarterly filing with regulators, J&J said the “number of pending product liability lawsuits continues to increase,” and that it has set aside money to pay for litigation costs associated with the mesh, though it didn’t specify an amount.
Federal cases against the company have been consolidated in the Southern District of West Virginia. The state cases in new Jersey have been centralized in a state court in Atlantic County.
Other manufacturers of pelvic mesh include Boston Scientific Corp., Covidien plc, CR Bard inc. and American Medical Systems.
A bruised and beaten England, aching in every limb, left Durban for the thin air of South Africa’s biggest city yesterday with the centre Brad Barritt on their minds. by the time they landed, the bad news had shifted towards the full-back Mike Brown. if Barritt, who suffered a gruesome eye injury in the first Test with the Springboks at Kings Park, may yet play a further part in this series, Brown is officially off tour, with damaged thumb ligaments.
Barritt needed surgery to repair damage to his eyeball and eyelid lining after being hurt in a tackle on his opposite number, Frans Steyn, early in the second half of Saturday’s game. Courageously he continued, hurling himself into a subsequent ruck before being led from the field with his left eye swollen and shut. he stayed in Durban, his home town, after having stitches inserted in his eyeball. unlikely as it may sound, there is a chance of him returning to full training a week today and recapturing his place for the third and final Test in Port Elizabeth.
If Brown’s injury was less grisly – the Harlequin, impressive on his return to Test rugby after a four-year break, was hurt in attempting to prevent the Springbok captain, Jean de Villiers, scoring his side’s second try – it will prove more frustrating. he is likely to be out for eight weeks and miss a good deal of the Premiership champions’ pre-season preparations.
The England management were last night finalising plans to fly in a replacement for Brown, with Nick Abendanon of Bath – another player of South African ancestry – among the possibilities. Fortunately for the tourists, there are comfortably enough midfielders around to cover Barritt’s absence.

Owen Farrell, the 20-year-old Saracens fly-half, has been the recipient of a good deal of criticism since the Durban contest, despite Lancaster’s assertion that he had shown a "tremendous temperament and great composure". Farrell made his share of errors and was guilty of some questionable decisions on the game-management front, but he defended magnificently, kicked four goals from five attempts and set up Ben Foden’s late try with a finely judged floated pass off his left hand.
If Lancaster decides to recall Toby Flood of Leicester – Flood’s form since last year’s World Cup has served as a reminder of his rough treatment at the hands of the previous management in the second half of 2011 – he could run him alongside Farrell. You can easily be socked with huge bills, which is what happened to one woman after her son ended up in the emergency room.
When Christine Knopp’s son, Brendan, got a deep cut on his face, the emergency room doctor offered the option of a plastic surgeon for the stitches.
The surgeon’s bill was $2,900. Christine had assumed her insurance would cover the surgeon, but that was not the case.
“we were pretty shocked. we had no idea that that was going to become our responsibility,” Knopp said.
The problem was that, while the hospital was in the family’s insurance network, the plastic surgeon who stitched up Brendan was not.
Consumer Reports said one of the most common causes of medical sticker shock is going out-of-network.
“A PPO plan might say that it will pay 60 to 80 percent of out-of-network care. that does not mean it will pay 60 to 80 percent of the actual bill, though. it means it will pay 60 to 80 percent of what the insurance company thinks the test or treatment ought to cost,” Nancy Metcalf from Consumer Reports said.
Consumer Reports found lots of examples of patients being hit with astronomical bills, including one woman who was charged $480,000 for back surgery.
“Bottom line, stay in your network. if you must go out of network, research ahead of time what your insurance company will pay,” Metcalf said.

SEEING RED: Blood flows from Shane Smeltz’s nose and lip after copping an elbow from Roar captain Matt Smith in the 15th minute of the A-League grand final.
all Whites striker Shane Smeltz leaves the scene of his A-League finals agony with 53 stitches in a gruesome facial injury and lingering bitterness about a controversial penalty that enabled the Brisbane Roar to win back-to-back championships at Suncorp Stadium yesterday.
While his teammates cursed their misfortune after suffering a last-gasp 2-1 defeat, the Perth Glory front man was undergoing surgery in a Brisbane hospital to close a gash between his top lip and nostrils.
Smeltz was opened up by a collision with Roar captain Matt Smith’s elbow in the 15th minute of the season’s showpiece. He needed four minutes of treatment to stem the bleeding before bravely carrying on until the wound could be provisionally stapled at halftime.
Despite his breathing being hampered by the nasal trauma the A-League’s all-time leading top scorer battled on bandaged until the 80th minute when his substitution was greeted by a standing ovation from the small contingent of Glory fans.
Smeltz had barely sat down on the bench before this season’s top scorer Besart Berisha headed the equaliser and with seconds remaining in the five minutes of added time the Albanian international struck the killer blow again after earning a dubious penalty.
Berisha lost his balance and produced an air swing while attempting a shot, an action that prompted referee Jarrad Gillett to point to the spot despite replays indicating there was minimal, if any, contact with Glory midfielder Liam Miller.
After prematurely celebrating the decision, Berisha returned to spot and sent Danny Vukovic the wrong way to spark wild scenes among the orange-clad throng.
Smeltz was able to attend the on-field post-match presentations and then left for hospital. Late last night his wife Nikki posted a photograph of his facial injuries on Twitter.
she later revealed he needed more than 50 stitches and described the injury: “As bad as a car accident” before adding: “Tough man, if I say so myself.”
Smeltz was unavailable today as the squad prepared to return to Perth but after the game he joined the condemnation of Gillett’s decision, telling the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper: “It’s not a penalty, simple as that. I can’t believe it. the timing was horrendous.”
Glory’s mood darkened further when it was revealed Gillett is in a relationship with a member of the Roar’s media team though in the post-match review on Fox Sports former Australian internationals Robbie Slater and mark Bosnich argued the penalty was justified.
On the New Year’s Day premiere of Mob Wives, reality star Renee Graziano was looking forward to what she called her fully body makeover. going into surgery, Renee was anticipating a flatter tummy and a rounder tush. what she got was a near death experience and more than two weeks in the hospital after she lost over six pints off blood when the stitches on her back ripped open during an attempt to sit upright.
In a recent interview with HollywoodLife.com, Renee recounts what it felt like before she was rushed to the emergency room. she recalls, “I knew something was wrong. I felt my life slipping. I felt everything drain out of my body. I knew I was dying. Thank God from up above [that I didn't].”
As for her continuing recovery, Renee admits, “I wake up every day in pain. there was a lot of scar tissue that was left inside. It’s painful. It’s very uncomfortable.”
With her pain comes a warning. “Research your plastic surgeon. I would do it again, but know who you are dealing with,” Renee advises. “you are making a life decision.”
While her wounds heal, Renee is still hurt that her (seemingly former) friend and co-star Carla Facciolo made no attempt to come see her or even call during the difficult time. Renee tells the site, “I’ve always said that Carla is the ice princess. Now, she went from being the ice princess to being a plain, cold block of ice. Carla is block of ice. as boring as it is to watch it melt is as boring as what it is to be in her company. I have nothing to say to that girl.”
Renee continues, saying she has no regrets about Carla not receiving an invitation to her birthday party. “It was a very good decision. it was my party. I wanted to celebrate my life,” Renee states. “I didn’t want anybody around me that gave me conflict.” Um, that would be great if it weren’t for the giant free-for-all that is going to erupt at Renee’s party in the upcoming episode.
We all know Karen Gravano and Drita D’avanzoare about to let the insults and fists fly, picking up lots of other brawling participants along their way. Renee reveals she was clueless about the ladies’ impending throw down, claiming, “I was minding my own business. I was having a good time laughing, dancing and singing at the party. I was unaware of what was going to happen. I would never put anybody in that position. as the story unfolds, you will understand who hits who. It’s just a crazy old bunch of girls.” Takes one to know one?
Of course, Renee tends to be the mother hen with her cast mates. while Karen and Drita clearly ruined her party she’s willing to overlook their drama. she says, “It would be really nice to see them make up.”
What I’m sure was nice for Renee and her fellow mob ladies to see was their show rating as the second most watched show on New Year’s night. Over 2.36 million viewers tuned in to see the smackdown premiere of the second season! This marks a 56% increase over the first season’s premiere episode.
With the drama we’re about to see unfold, there is no doubt the viewers will keep flocking to their televisions every Sunday of the season!
