But, increasingly, patients are not going under the knife, instead taking advantage of new technologies that mean plastic ‘surgery’ is less invasive than ever.

A new skin-tightening device, for example, negates the need for a scalpel and shaves hours off time under anaesthetic and recovery time.

Incisions are shorter and fewer, reports ABC’s 20/20 – and the processes are certainly geared towards the less squeamish, a fact that is sure to boost the bottom line of the $10 billion per year business. 

Advances in high-tech procedures come with a hefty price tag attached.

Dr Doug Steinbrech, a new York specialist performs a new facelift with the device at a cost of an eye-watering $35,000.

And a day to re-sculpt a face using ultrasound and lasers costs an astonishing $11,000.

A non-surgical liposuction option comes in the form of Lipsonix.

Dr Doris Day told the programme that it ‘is the newest kid on the block for helping to re-sculpt and melt fat.

‘It’s like liposuction, but it’s a non-surgical approach. … it uses that high-density focus ultrasound to actually heat up and melt fat.’

The same ultrasound wizardry can be used to give non-surgical facelifts.

Cheri Bollman, 48, has a brood of 11 children and featured on the show My Life is a Sitcom. Dr Day gave her a non-surgical facelift that used high-density ultrasound shrink and tighten tissue under the skin.

The doctor told the network that the special ultrasound ‘delivers heat very deep, that helps give a lift.’

In her book, Forget the Facelift, the doctor explained that the advancements have not ruled out surgery altogether, but instead focus on an integrated approach that uses the best of both worlds.

‘I do not believe in aging gracefully… I think you have to fight it every step of the way’

 

The doctor told Barbara Walters on ABC that she does not ‘believe in aging gracefully.

‘I think you have to fight it every step of the way.’ as such, she details in her book the arsenal of approaches surgeons use in that battle: ‘We have different tools and we also have different approaches.’

That artistry, though, comes at a cost of around $11,000 for one day’s work.

‘Before, we just had a few different types of animal-based collagen, and now we have a whole palette of tools available,’ she told the network.

‘We are putting some elements deep, and some elements more superficial, to get a very natural approach.’

The very busy mother, who has never had any cosmetic procedures or treatments – even a facial – before, is clearly pleased with the outcome.

She told ABC that the results ‘look so natural’ and, just three weeks after her non-surgical boost, said: ‘I noticed I don’t have to pick up my eyelid to put on makeup anymore.’

There have been plenty of news stories in the last few weeks about PIP breast implants and apparent health scares, which have caused a number of people to ask – what exactly are the facts about all of this? well, we’ve put together a bit of a guide as to what has been said so far.

How did the scare start?

In June last year, it was reported that women who had received breast enlargements were being advised to contact their surgeon regarding the type of implant they received. The reason was that Poly Implant Prostheses (PIPs) had been found by a French inquiry to be filled with a gel that was unapproved and had inadequate protective barriers.

While it was feared that around 50,000 women in the UK may have had these implants, the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) warned against panic, adding that those with this type of implant should seek a check-up within the next six months. President Nigel Mercer said: “If it’s PIP they should have an ultrasound in the next six months to establish whether there is any weakening or rupture. At present removal is recommended in these cases, but if there is one ruptured implant, the contralateral one should be taken out as well, as a preventative measure.”

What’s the worst that can happen?

In early January, the UK Health secretary Andrew Lansley said no evidence had yet been found to suggest PIPs have – as French authorities originally reported – a five per cent higher chance of rupture than other implant types. He added it was “not advisable for women to routinely have implants removed, because the risk associated with an operation of that kind would outweigh the benefit of removing [them].”

The fear surrounding the implants is that the silicone gel used to fill them is not medical grade and could be irritative. This in turn could lead to an increased risk inflammation reaction and subsequently make removal more difficult. there has been one case of a rare form of cancer called anaplastic large cell lymphoma reported in France, but while some experts have suggested there may be a small but increased risk of this cancer in women with breast implants, this has nothing to do with PIPs.

What’s happening now?

While French authorities insist PIPs have a higher rupture rate and are offering to remove all implants from women who’ve had them, UK figures show rupture rates are lower and the government has said that as such there is no need for routine implant removal. As it stands, a review is being conducted, but so far the overwhelming message seems to be that there is little to worry about – particularly when it comes to things like increased cancer risk.

I’m still worried… what should I do?

If you don’t know what type of implants you’ve had or are worried about some of the reports that you’ve read, the best thing to do is speak to the surgeon who gave you your breast augmentation in the first place. It’s not unusual to be concerned about this type of thing – especially when it’s so prevalent in the news – but by talking to an expert you should get the reassurance you need.

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – There’s been a lot of buzz about a new treatment for the face that works to firm and lift the skin with no needles and no downtime.

The treatment is called ultherapy.

“I definitely didn’t want to get into surgery. I didn’t want to take a lot of downtime either, so this is simple and easy and not very painful I hear, too,” Donna Summers said.

Summers did her homework and knew this was something she wanted to try to help tighten up the sagging skin she’s been noticing when she looks in the mirror.

Dr. Paul Leong said she’s a perfect candidate for ultherapy.

“They know they sort of want to do something. they know they’re not as happy as they used to be, but they may not be that enthused about surgery,” Dr. Leong said.

It uses ultrasound sound waves that create heat energy below the skin’s surface.

“We can see all of the tissues from the skin, all the way down to the bones in the neck, and then we pick exactly the level that we want to do these small thermal treatment zones,” Dr. Leong said.

It’s enough to trigger the body’s natural collagen building process, which means immediate results, and improvement continues over five or six months.

“Remember the treatment here, what’s actually been affected,” Dr. Leong said. “There’s no redness, there’s no nothing. the treatment is a good half-inch under the skin and that’s why it’s so tolerable.”

Before and after pictures show measurable tightening and lifting, especially of what many know as “turkey neck.” Dr. Leong is quick to point out ultherapy doesn’t replace traditional cosmetic surgery, but he said it does offer a nice option. There’s no needles, no anesthetic, no downtime and clear results from a single treatment.

When Summers is all done with her treatment, the doctor will advise her that she may experience a little bit of redness and some tingling for a few days. Other than that, there is no real formal follow-up care.

She’ll be able to go back to her normal skincare and makeup the very next morning.

Pricing for ultherapy varies according to how much work is done.

Specialty, smaller areas like just around the mouth cost around $1,100, neck and cheeks cost about $2,500 and the whole face including the brow, costs about $3,500.

The price is comparable to a traditional face lift, which can run up to $15,000.
