Chin Implants: the Cosmetic Surgery Trend of 2011

Plastic surgeons performed more than 20,000 chin augmentation procedures last year, according to new statistics released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

The statistics show that chin augmentation is the fastest growing trend in plastic surgery, across all major patient demographics. the society says the trend may be driven in part by increased usage of video chat technology, which is being used by aging baby boomers who want to maintain success in the workplace.

In 2011, chin augmentation grew more than breast augmentation, Botox and liposuction combined. a significant increase in procedures were seen in both men and women. the largest increase (77 percent) was seen in patients age 40 and older.

As a manager for a major software company, Lizette Stephens often finds herself face-to-face with people all over the world. And while she loves how technology keeps her in touch, she didn’t always like how it made her look.

“I do a lot of video chats and I’m in a lot of photos and noticed that my double chin was very pronounced. it really, really bothered me. I wanted to do something about it to get a more profound profile and more definition in my chin area,” said Stephens.

“the chin and jawline are among the first areas to show signs of aging. People are considering chin augmentation as a way to restore their youthful look just like a facelift or eyelid surgery,” said ASPS President Malcolm Z. Roth, MD. “We also know that as more people see themselves on video chat technology, they may notice that their jawline is not as sharp as they want it to be. Chin implants can make a dramatic difference.”

Lizette Stephens (seen in the video) had chin augmentation with Darrick Antell, MD, based in New York City. Dr. Antell has reportedly studied the facial profiles of successful people. “We know that CEOs tend to be tall, attractive, good-looking people,” he comments.” We now know that these people also tend to have a stronger chin. as a result, people subconsciously associate a stronger chin with more authority, self-confidence and trustworthiness.”

‘Chin jobs’ head cosmetic-surgery list in US

Chin implants are the fastest growing type of cosmetic procedure in the US according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).

The body reported 20,680 operations in 2011, a 71% increase since 2010.

However, the chin implants still account for a small proportion of the overall number of cosmetic procedures taking place.

British surgeons said chin impants were rarely done in isolation but as part of a package of cosmetic surgery.

Last month, data from American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery showed liposuction was the most common cosmetic surgical procedure with 325,332 operations.

This was closely followed by breast augmentation (316,848).

However, the ASPS said the main growth was in chin implants, with almost equal numbers of men and women opting to modify their jawline.

The ASPS represents 7,000 surgeons in the US. its president, Malcolm Roth, said: “People are considering chin augmentation as a way to restore their youthful look, just like a facelift.”

One patient, Lizette Stephens, said: “I do a lot of video chats and I’m in a lot of photos and noticed that my double chin was very pronounced.

“It really, really bothered me. I wanted to do something about it.”

James McDiarmid, a consultant surgeon and spokesperson for the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, said: “No-one ever comes into my clinic asking for a chin implant. Nobody says ‘I want to look like Bruce Forsyth’.”

Instead, he says, it is being used as part of other operations such as reducing the size of a nose when “the small chin is making the nose look bigger.”

Around 80% of his chin implants are part of other cosmetic surgery operations.

Mr McDiarmid said: “It is a more complex response to demands from patients.”

Chin Implants up by 71% vs. 4% Rise in Breast Implants in 2011

April 16, 2012 — a chiseled chin may be the latest “must have” body part.

A new report shows “chinplants,” otherwise known as chin augmentation or chin implants, are the fastest-growing plastic surgery trend among men and women. the popularity of chin implants rose by 71% in 2011, more than breast augmentation, botulinum toxin injection, and liposuction combined.

Researchers say the trend appears to be fueled by a combination of increasing use of video chats, an aging baby boomer population, and competition in the workplace.

“The chin and jawline are among the first areas to show signs of aging,” Malcolm Z. Roth, MD, president of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, says in a news release. “We also know that as more people see themselves on video chat technology, they may notice that their jawline is not as sharp as they want it to be.”

Other cosmetic procedures that experienced the biggest increases in popularity in 2011 also focus on the face, including:

  • Lip augmentation: 49% increase
  • Cheek implant: 47% increase
  • Laser skin resurfacing: 9% increase
  • Soft tissue fillers: 7% increase
  • Facelift: 5% increase

Top Cosmetic Procedures

Although the number of chin implants grew from 12,077 to 20,680 in 2011, those numbers are dwarfed in comparison to the most popular cosmetic procedure, breast augmentation.

  • Facelift: 119,026 (up 5%)

Researchers say facelifts are back among the top five cosmetic plastic surgeries for the first time since 2004 and knocked tummy tucks out of the top five.

Among minimally invasive cosmetic procedures, laser hair removal and soft tissue fillers were among the fastest growing.

The top five minimally invasive procedures in 2011 were:

  • Botulinum toxin type a (Botox, Dysport): 5.7 million (up 5%)
  • Soft tissue fillers (Juvederm, Perlane, Radiesse, Restylane, Sculptra, and others): 1.9 million (up 7%)
  • Chemical peels: 1.1 million (down 3%)
  • Laser hair removal: 1.1 million (up 15%)
  • Microdermabrasion: 900,000 (up 9%)

Plastic Surgery among the Sexes

Researchers say women accounted for 91% of all cosmetic procedures, and the majority of procedures were among people between the ages of 40 and 54.

Among women, the most popular cosmetic plastic surgery procedures in 2011 were:

  • Breast augmentation: 307,000 (up 4%)
  • Nose reshaping: 182,000 (down 4%)
  • Liposuction: 182,000 (up 1%)
